It tends to be weak/passive aggressive men that actually shit-test other men imo. Bantering is one thing, but giving passive aggressive, back handed compliments e.g., or shit tests is another.

It always used to catch me off guard when I was younger, and I'd only really notice what happened after the interaction. I think this is because I'm a pretty straight-up guy, not weak or passive aggressive, always up for a laugh or a scrap or whatever; so it didn't just occur to me that other guys would behave in such a weak/passive-aggressive way.

I think it's a good thing for younger guys to be aware that certain types of guys behave like that, and that usually you don't wanna associate with that type of guy either.

Those aren't shit tests. Those are direct challenges to strength/athletic abilities. Shit tests are more indirect. A woman wouldn't test your strength by just tackling you hard. She would come up with some roundabout way to do it.

So basically, I was a doormat for some part of my previous relationship and decided to stop simping and eating shit.

This made my former partner extremely insecure and he started shit testing me constantly to see if he still held the majority share of power in our micro-interactions.

It pretty much manifested as persistent passive aggression, sudden withdrawals of affection and basic communication to test if I'd come running after him, negging my appearance, attempts to make me jealous of other women, being deliberately inconsiderate at home and bratty. It basically felt like I was around a child acting out to get a parent's attention and to see what he could "get away with".

My brother shit tests his girlfriend (beautiful woman, earns significantly more than him and smart) all the time too.

Now, men do challenge each others masculinity. Definitely. Though, I’d say it’s a more open, clear display than the games women play.

All that said, I see the point OP is trying to make. Again, men do test each other. I just feel like “shit testing” is a term that was always meant exclusively for women.

So, yeah, if a man is shit testing you, he’s either a) into guys or b) not a man at all.

Edit: I once had a girl spin an elaborate plot about a jealous, abusive ex-boyfriend “from Russia” that was “crazy”, telling me that he’d recently been trying to make contact with her again. She said that he’d stopped by her apartment, left letters, etc.

Keep in mind, all of this was shortly after I’d began seeing her. You know what I realized after a couple days? It was all in an attempt to see if I’d get jealous or defensive. She was toying with me, prodding for a reaction.

That’s a shit test, man. Maybe an extreme example of a shit test, but it really paints the picture of the lengths they’ll go to, just to see how you react. Flirting with guys in front of you. Telling you that you look bad with a certain haircut to see if you’re self-concious. Absolutely crazy behavior. Weird stuff.

Though, like I said, there’s definitely a range to shit testing. Some women are actually pretty laid back and can just tell when you’re “man enough” for her or whatever. Some women might test you once, then you’re in.
