Out of all these series I know only Twilight - and Edward was dangerous, but he also was a very stereotypical "good guy" - a proper gentleman insisting on waiting till marriage, he put her well-being and safety above his own love, he values her about the fetus inside of her, he was ready to sacrifice himself for her etc. The whole conflict of him being dangerous for her was pretty much resolved by the first book.

I've been reading some webtoons - and I'd argue that they target a younger auditory rather than smut novels, and, yeah, main leads are usually some dukes, princes etc. Main female leads also do not tend to be peasants though. Male leads can have reputation for being cruel or cold, but they melt into puppies for the female leads, and they generally treat their people really well - they're good rulers loved by people in their care. I also see some webtoons with far more active female leads saving or helping to save their male interests.

Some examples of what I'm talking about:

Like wind on the dry branch - a duke with bad reputation who saves the female lead and he treats her with care and respect. He actually treats all people in his care this way, and his bad reputation is the result of avenging his mother. He's hesitant to pursue her as she's a widow, and he respects her mourning her late husband.

I'll be the matriarch in this life - female lead saves the male lead from poisoning, and he's very dedicated to her from their childhood.

Men of the harem - the female lead is an empress with her harm. There's actually a turn to harems for women, and one of the characters is a soft puppy. He might be scheming, but I haven't read this one far.

Leveling up my husband to the max - a pretty common trope of unhappy marriage, death and getting the second chance - the second time around the guy is a huge puppy for the female lead.

Women aren’t monolithic in desires, attraction, or most things. Neither are men. There’s women who like tall, attractive, brown haired hotties, and there’s women who don’t care if he has hair at all, and some who don’t like men with overly sculpted muscles, and some women don’t like muscular men at all, some like men who are giants, other women like people regardless of their shapes and sizes. When you generalize like that, you can hurt everyone, but you’ll hurt yourself most of all. Because you’re making yourself a little more toxic, each time. With the exception of tall, I don't think "dark" or even "handsome" are specific enough to generalize as a preference for most women. We aren't supposed to talk about race on this sub, which makes responding to this post tricky because ultimately, the "dark" in tall, dark and handsome doesn't necesssarily mean the same thing to different people, and handsome can be subjective for the same reason.

lol you just described what the publishing industry has guessed will sell the best. Does romantasy have an audience? Yes. But it’s not reflective of women as a whole. I can’t stand those books you listed because I think they’re written poorly and most of the female leads are actually stupid. There’s actually a whole industry of video critiques built on women hating popular romantasy novels because of how unrealistic the depiction of romance is and how awful the guys are.

Ok first of all. The cruel prince and twilight aren't smut. Second of all, those are some examples but not the only examples. Two of my favorite series rn are the Emily wilde series by Heather fawcett and the scholomance series by Naomi Novak. And both have super sweet, "golden retriever" energy. As for being handsome, well sure, the girls are attractive too. I can't really speak on the tall thing. I'm 5'10.5" and yeah I like guys my height or taller. Sue me.

I think including erotica in particular muddles things since it's bound to overrepresent fantasies harder to fulfill IRL like sadomasochism, and bad boy male characters in these novels can be more of a vehicle to fulfill the exact BDSM fantasy to masochistic women, as it's easier to write morally evil or generally assholeish characters as sadistic and willing to do to the female lead the things that the author and the audience want him to, rather than a genuine representation of what women or even masochistic women are into.
