Inspired by a conversation I’ve been having deep in a buried thread, I figured this deserved it’s own post, plus I’d like to hear others weigh in, cause maybe I’m way off on this 🤷‍♀️

I don’t expect men to buy me things, I don’t and never have let men I already know I’m not interested in buy me drinks or dinner. I have asked out men (and women) and been the one to cover the whole check. In an LTR I’m pretty much always 50/50 or just whatever’s deemed fair by the situation, once the courtship phase has passed. That being said, in a first date scenario, I think there’s something socially off if he doesn’t at least offer to pay, assuming the date was his idea. Even if I’m 100% planning on covering my own half. The exception being if it’s established ahead of time that it’s a seperate checks situation, like during the asking out or at least before the date starts. To me, it’s the principle of the thing. It’s not the price of the meal/drink I could easily fund myself, it’s a matter of politeness to at least offer to treat if the date was your idea. And what it could mean if he doesn’t. Especially if it was implied in the proposition, for example:

“I’d like to take you out to dinner tonight.”

If a guy used those words or something similar, suggested a restaurant, had a meal with me and then told the server two checks without even offering to buy or given me a chance to I think that’s either a sign the date went bad and he isn’t interested in me after all. Or that something is off with him, and now I’m wondering what else might be off. Maybe that makes me a bad feminist, but even if I’m entirely determined not to let a guy pay for me, I think there’s something socially off about him not even offering. Just like he might be annoyed if he offers and I shut him down about it and make it weird. Maybe it’s regional, maybe I’m getting old, but I feel like there should be a polite little back and forth over the check, it’s part of the flirting, the banter, it’s a way to feel out how the other person thinks the evening is going.

I dunno, I’ve been in a relationship with the same guy for almost ten years now so it’s not like this is even something applicable to my life. I weighed in to that other thread though because the guy is having difficulty dating but also won’t budge on his paying for dates policy. I think he’s shooting himself in the foot. I get the principle behind it, but at some point I think one has to acknowledge what the social norms are.
