I wish your mom gave me that lecture when I was 20 😭

[–]hvg1989FDS Newbie132 points133 points134 points 6 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

I wish my mum told me anything about men at all 😂

[–]SewudFDS Apprentice52 points53 points54 points 6 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Yeah my mom never said anything about men or dating. Nothing. Not a word. Ever. Nothing about sex or how men rape. Just nothing.

[–]thiswomanthatiknowFDS Newbie48 points49 points50 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

My mom, amazing though she may be, has always rallied for men and gets very uncomfortable when men, as individuals or as a demographic, are criticized. I've been chipping away at that tendency for some time now, and to a measurable degree of satisfaction, but I can't help regretting the pain I experienced as a child, adolescent, and young adult due to her favoritism of males.

So, basically, when men abused me, she would try to frame the issue in a way that would put me at fault. Old school internalized misogyny. I think I would have preferred she said nothing, but sometimes I wonder if witnessing her tie herself into knots defending indefensible behavior helped me to recognize male insidiousness from a tender age.

[–]DelicateDreamFDS Disciple28 points29 points30 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My mom is this way too. It’s always women’s fault.

Unless it’s her life... then she’s a victim and her husband is terrible.

And she acts like I’m impossibly picky if I am not romantically interested in a man who likes me, no matter what reasons I outline for her. She acts like marriage is the end-all be-all, even though she’s miserable in hers. All of her advice is basically her own life decisions - none of which worked out.

I don’t understand this mentality. It’s almost like they want you to make the same mistakes they did... as some kind of strange validation...? Yeah I don’t get it.

[–]thiswomanthatiknowFDS Newbie9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm thankful that her issues weren't that deep, although, to be fair, she's an equal opportunity woman blamer and so never denied herself the same shame she cast upon me for not being pleasing enough for the satisfaction of males. If anything, she is actually fully capable of respecting the strength of women who aren't her or myself. In fact, it's quite easy for her to admire strong women from afar, but if she personally knew the men that were deprioritized by those strong women, their strength would make her uncomfortable.

I'm also thankful that my mom never pushed me into subservient feminine roles like wife and mother (still neither! 😁), but she really wanted me do what she's done all her life: shut up about abuse and discrimination, put on blinders, and go along to get along. As a life strategy, it hasn't worked out well for her, but she has definitely expended a great deal of energy trying to get me to adopt it for myself, to exactly zero success.

I recently pointed out how it's all due to her refusal to accept that there's a feeble little man behind the curtain instead of a great and powerful wizard, but that I still have hope that one day I'll be able to tear it down, prove once and for all that she deludes herself as a coping mechanism for the way she's been treated her whole life, and then her and I can fly away into the sunset and leave the miserable men we know in the past. After decades of chiseling away at her internalized misogyny, she was able to readily admit to the truth of the metaphor, and I still maintain hope that one day the velvet shadow in her life will come crashing down.

My mom deserves to feel better about herself because she's so much better than the men that have torn her down, and so long as she lives, I'll not give up on getting her to see that. Perhaps I'm trying to compel her to trade one pain for another, but I'd rather she suffer over the truth than a lie, in the hope that she can eventually recover from both, even if she's elderly by the time she comes around.

[–]SewudFDS Apprentice11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, she'd favor my brothers, too. She laughed when they bullied me and told me it was my fault for giving them "a reaction". He did it because I reacted. He'd respect me more if I didn't react. So I'd swallow the pain and not react, but he'd just escalate further to reach my breaking point. I'd be blamed again. I became extremely tough, but my brother just got more and more vicious to reach my breaking point. He never stopped. He eventually moved out and didn't see me enough to bully me anymore.

No one think it's wrong that boys like to make people cry? She also said her older brother was horrible to her too, so it's normal. Maybe she wanted me to suffer like she did.

[–]thiswomanthatiknowFDS Newbie7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Maybe she wanted me to suffer like she did.

I've always suspected this about a few decisions my mom made. She also raised me similarly to how she was raised, despite not being a fan of her parents' parenting style, whilst pretending that she didn't know any other way, which is absolute bunk. I suppose it's just easier to tell girls to shut up while just asking the boys to keep it down.

Granted, she was stretched pretty thin at the time, but I was a good kid and easy to deal with (until I got older and the chickens came home to roost), and I deserved a mom who was willing to defend me from psychological harm or help me recover from it after it had happened. Not that any child doesn't, but I was a sweet kid and a people pleaser. Unfortunately, being easy to raise means being easier to ignore.

I hate how much I can relate to your response. Thankfully, when my brother acted out viciously, my mom would put an end to that shit pretty quickly, but there was an elevated level of cruelty he was allowed to get away with that didn't end until he went to live with my dad for a few years and learned the hard way that the male role model he looked up to was trash and that my mom had always been superior. He learned from that experience but still thinks his pale skin and male genitalia automatically elevate him above others. Not that he'd agree with that statement, but he's not nearly as insightful as he thinks he is. He is, however, really good at forming ignorant, poorly informed, offensive(ly stupid) opinions, over-steeping them in confirmation bias, and then proudly going to bat for them against any~one~ woman who actually knows better.

My mom once cried to me that it hurts his feelings that I don't treat him like I think he's smart, meanwhile it doesn't phase her that he's been condescending to me for decades while being blatantly far less intelligent, not a reader, nor a news consumer, barely high school educated, spends an inordinate amount of time playing video games and masturbating to porn, et cetera... But yes, please, mom, by all means, cry about his feelings after he screams at me that feminists are just like Nazis because I told him that there are different branches of feminism, because that makes sense? Everybody knows that above all else, the Nazis encouraged free thought and debate whilst trying to uplift marginalized communities, so thank god he was there to disrespect me in my own home that he invited himself into to condescend to me about feminism (and Nazis, because as it turns out, I don't understand that ideology, either 🙄). Sure, he doesn't understand either side of the issues that different feminists disagree on, but he doesn't need to because he's wise enough to know it's all a load of crap because my dad told him so. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🤬

Sorry for the rant. 😬

ETA that apparently my formatting (italics and strikethrough) didn't work as intended... 🙃

My mom is a horrible role model when it comes to just about anything. My father was abusive and she could never completely leave him even when I was old enough to tell her she deserved better.

[–]Davina33FDS Newbie19 points20 points21 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Same here!

[–]SewudFDS Apprentice40 points41 points42 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Men use the lowball technique. They offer way less than what they could really offer, counting on trapping naive nice girls. Truly despicable. For instance a 40-year-old might have enough money to take a girl on a real date, but he'll offer something on the level a 14-year-old might suggest just to try to get away with it. Truly low quality non-dates and the like. Then some girl will be too nice to refuse, and he's successfully lowballed the female gender.

[–]rayne_chiFDS Newbie104 points105 points106 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Ladies, please listen to this!! I’ve always dated men older than me (8-12 yrs older) to the point my friends joked that I had daddy issues. I married one of them too and had kids with him and he’s a terrible father. My last ex was 12 yrs older and so fucking jaded! This post described his mentality perfectly. He was done trying and just wanted something easy. He only took me out on a couple of dates in the 1.5 yrs we dated and the rest of the time he would just come over to my place to have sex and we’d order food which I would pay for more than half of the time 🙄 I cringe looking back at how low effort he was and how stupid I was too! After we broke up, I dated someone my age and he treated me so differently and was overall good to me. Even though we didn’t end up together, he was a sweetheart and really showed me the way I deserve to be treated. The guy I’m dating now is only 4 yrs older and is honestly the best person I’ve ever dated! He has so much enthusiasm, positivity, and passion that I’ve never seen in older men. Never again!!!

[–]EmergencyShitFDS Apprentice36 points37 points38 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is why being easy-going is detrimental to oneself while in relationship, which really sucks because my personality IS easy-going! But accepting low effort behavior teaches them that you’re only worth low effort behavior.

Hard truth right here

[–]Kekekeke7777FDS Newbie74 points75 points76 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And once you turn 38 if you haven’t already, you will be so grossed out thinking about this guy being your age and trying to date 20 year old women.

[–]inviolateloveFDS Newbie17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This right here! I could never have comprehended how gross those kind of age differences were until I was the one on the other side. Now in my (early) 30s, I look at a 20 year old and think "dear god they look 12". I can't imagine putting almost a full decade more between us. Jfc.

[–]TriSarahFlopsFDS Newbie66 points67 points68 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

When I was in my early 20s, I dated a surgeon 20 years older than me. He paid my bills and “spoiled” me for over a year. When we split, I added up everything he spent on me. It wasn’t even as much as his fucking watch cost.

[–]itsvkeeFDS Newbie7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Surgeons are overrated. Disappointing at best 😂 they’re so self absorbed because everyone in their work life treats them like god. Then expect that in every aspect of their lives

[–]TriSarahFlopsFDS Newbie5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yup. His first wife who knew him starting freshman year of college when he was a grubby teenager wasn’t having any of it and left him.

A 60 year old male I know has two children with a 30 year old woman. He keeps telling me his sister and friends disapprove and he doesn't know what to do about it. He pursued me not long before her, but I knew what he was all about. He already has 2 kids by two different women. I'm afraid he will soon leave this 30 year old woman too.

Yes definitely. I think a whole pile of LVM actually never even had “the one that got away” they just had multiple women leave them, but they never cared about any of them too much. They just go low value all the way through their lives and keep dating younger because of the reasons you listed. Oh and they will also always use the previous gfs to make the new gf jealous... which works well on any woman usually to an extent, but more specifically younger women who are less experienced and more likely to try to compete...

[–]woiashenseeaFDS Newbie11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Lol, you might doubt it less if you think of all the things LOW value men see as "spent on a woman"; the gas to drive, the laundry detergent/soap to be decently hygienic for dates, the food that provided the calories necessary for opening a door 6 (six!!!) whole times on average per date. We are so NEEDY 🤣🤣

[–]thiswomanthatiknowFDS Newbie6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Six whole times? Why you work that man so hard???

[–]ny-ladyFDS Apprentice24 points25 points26 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My parents taught me to stay away from older men too, any good parent does. My mom and dad taught me those older men wanted to use me for my youth, sex and groom me. They were right.

But, but, they did it in 1950 so its normal, no its not, I was taught this back in the 80's. Like my mom and dad didnt know a thing or two...

Let lone I just saw them as old as my dad, eww, why would I want a man as old as my dad at 22? Gross.

Also large age gap relationships have a Huge failure rate for a reason.

It's okay. Mistakes are part of life. At least you know you won't make that mistake ever again. You deserve better.

[–]galian84FDS Apprentice19 points20 points21 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your mom was right. My parents gave me a similar talk, but I didn't listen. My oldest ex, who was 19 years older than me (I was young and naive). Probably was the worst. Gaslit and manipulated me until I finally wised up and dumped him. Always used his age as excuse to dismiss my feelings and do whatever the hell he wanted. Wanted a relationship with investing as little effort and money as possible.

My ex who was 3 years older was much better and actually tried, just too bad he was avoidant and also broke.

I have a guy now who's asking me out and actually planning a great date, with input on what I liked. And he's 5 years younger than me.

[–]MerunitFDS Newbie16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is so true! Great post.

I was dating an older guy when I was 25 and he was 50, for 3 years. Abuse started very slowly, and his mom was always gaslighting me but pretended she was on my side. Uggh.. it was a good lesson, at least.

But thinking we only have limited time in life, how many “long term” relationships could we form? Maybe 3-5. Women should stop wasting their years away on low quality relationships.

[–]Evil_RaoFDS Apprentice17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I dated a 28 year old when I was 17 and to this day I don't know tf my parents were thinking by not trying to intervene. My mom has very strong opinions on how women should be independent and how I should be extremely picky. Guess she didn't want to pick a fight.

[–]FDSFemmeFataleFDS Newbie15 points16 points17 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This applies even to ladies in their 40's. I just got done with a 50 something guy, and yeah...the laziness and issues he had were just crazy. He took me out on dates, but he just expected me to accept so much immaturity that I couldn't deal with it. He ended up ghosting, at his age! It just wasn't worth it.

[–]Davina33FDS Newbie28 points29 points30 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well said! Your mother is a wise lady. My mother never warned me about men, she never even warned me not to talk to strange men as a child. She is right, I dated an older man in my 20s. Twice divorced, cynical, jaded and a low value loser. I would never do it again. They are perverts and just taking advantage.

[–]confusedwife29065FDS Newbie10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I wish I had received that advice. I married someone much older than me and I definitely feel less respected and belittled. I'm made to feel badly for my age and life experience. Its harrowing.

[–]level_up_alwaysFDS Disciple7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry you're having to deal with that. My ex was only 5 years older than me but arrogant af. I hope you can get out of your situation.

[–]TERFSareawesomeFDS Apprentice9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's so true. There's something so beautiful about young love. I'm just past 30 now and seriously everyone becomes so much less exciting, because you've been there, done that. You just dont get butterflies in the same way. Women especially deserve to be treated like their partner is nervous and excited to see them. Don't give that up and waste your firsts on some old jaded guy who's had a million first kisses, first dates, first "should we be exclusive?" talks. Wait for a guy your age who's just as excited and happy to go through these things as you are!

[–]dzgataFDS Apprentice18 points19 points20 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I usually prefer 2/3 year age gaps. I feel weird even dating someone 5-7 years older. I just do. I always find them incredibly dull and boring as well (I’m in my early twenties btw)

[–]DecentMacaroonFDS Newbie5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not to mention they're usually ugly lol

[–]itsvkeeFDS Newbie7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

God bless your mother. I’m sure if I told my mother anything she’d probably say the same thing to me but that’s a whole other story I don’t want to talk about.

This really came at a great time for me. I was seeing this guy who was 7/8 years older than I am and I was ✨😍✨ by his maturity (now antics) and now I’m kicking myself for thinking that he was actually interested in me. Honestly I’m just so done with dating because I feel like no matter how old guys are they’re just disappointing at best.

I wish my mom knew what your mom knows and also I wished I was given this lecture at 17 when I became smitten with a manipulative 30 yr old lvm. Women should never date an older man unless he’s willing to spend millions on her. Never hand over your youth to men who are old enough to be your fathers or grandfathers.

[–]MonicaLSolisFDS Newbie2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I think either he is a good lover or a bad lover whether he is young or old typically I advise women to not date men who are significantly older than you

[–]seraphinelysionFDS Newbie7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What range is considered "older" by FDS standards?

[–]EmergencyShitFDS Apprentice10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Idk if there’s a FDS rule for this, but there’s also the sliding scale of age gaps as people mature.

In my mind it’s always been something like this: 18 year olds fresh out of high school? Maybe like 3 years. Mid 20s? Like 5 years. 30s? 5-10 years. 40s? 10-15yrs.

Thank you. That's a helpful start at least.

I was told to try dating a bit older as men tend to mature at a later age, so i wasn't sure what the range should be, but your sliding scale works for me.

Never though of it that way. I always assumed older men were better because usually they have more money.

Older men should at the very least pay up. Dating an older man for free is a total travesty. Why do these men think they deserve it? They should obviously pay up to compensate for the age gap. It's so ridiculous seeing the audacity of these men thinking that just their personhood is valuable enough to justify dating that old.

How do you initiate that conversation?

[–]ghygdryhchmmmmjjFDS Newbie28 points29 points30 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Haha its things like that, that make them appear so much "cooler". Its like how 15 year old girls might swoon over the 17 year old with the car, because he has more "means" than them. Meanwhile the girls his age are dateing better guys with better qualities and they have access to cars of thier own so dont need one. If you look at it from the perspective of the guys your age who date many years younger than you, it all makes sense. To me anyways.

Not even usually , sadly. So many broke older men!

[–]PunnyPrinterPickmeisha™️5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Some are. A broke or cheap older man couldn’t get me to even cough in his direction. It’s truly a case by case basis.

I date an older guy and he’s been wonderful to me, while paying my bills. He knows this is his role and enjoys it. He loves me, I care for him, and I like it this way. Men my age have broken my heart.

But I’m in my 30s, not a young woman in her early 20s who is at risk of being manipulated. I’ve lived a bit, so games are easier for me to spot.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It’s ironic because because the richest men I’ve met are also the cheapest.

[–]PunnyPrinterPickmeisha™️2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s true too. But a man like that, isn’t a generous person at heart. And that’s what’s even more important than the amount of money he has. That’s what I look for signs for, generosity. Some men will use their money to attract a partner, then keep dangling it to keep things going. That’s why I’m not impressed with promises, there has to be tangible proof.

Yup. They waste money on things like eating out instead of cooking for themselves, but when a girl comes along all of a sudden they start penny pinching.

How did it first happened that he started paying your bills? Very beginning similar situation

[–]PunnyPrinterPickmeisha™️4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I told him I was stressed because I was short on my car payment. I declined a date we had planned at the last minute, pretending that I was going to pick up more hours at work instead. I’ve even actually gotten more scarce if I needed to, to prove a point (with other men). But with him, he offered to pay the bill for me. A month later, without me asking, he offered to pay it again. And then it continued from there. He began paying more bills in time, now I have everything paid by him except my rent.

I wish my mother told me these things..Instead she never talked about sex/relationships or anything like that ever (I didn't know about menstruation until the age of 12-13 when teachers explained it to us in school, the weird thing is that I learned about sex earlier by accident when surfing on the internet at about 11-12)

Instead on the very rare occasions when I asked to go to my friends bday 'party' or school trips, she didn't let me because for some reason she though someone would rape me..she was very neurotic and delusional, but as I get to know more and more about how sick and cruel men can be maybe she wasn't as crazy as I thought as a child after all..
