May or may not be controversial for this sub, but I’ll say this:

I don’t know many details about these cases, but as a general rule, It’s not a good idea to come right out the gate and immediately label them as “false allegations”.

It’s one thing to point out that they are unproven have little to no evidence or to want due process and not want someone’s career ruined in the court of public opinion. It’s another to immediately label a claim as false or say that the accuser is outright lying.

The claims “she was assaulted” and “her claim is false” and “she is lying” are all separate claims that require their own burden of proof.

In the same way that not guilty is not the same as innocent, a claim without enough evidence does not mean that it is false or that it was an intentional lie.

By dismissing all of them upfront as false accusations, you are poisoning the well in this convo unless you have the counter evidence to back it up.

Again, I don’t know much about these cases, so I’m not making a statement on who I believe more.

My own ex-wife has made false rape allegations against me. We were in the middle of custody dispute and she kept asking me to leave the house and I refused. Ultimately, she just walked into a police station and told them I raped her. I haven't seen my kids in months and she's living in my house while I pay for it. I am waiting a criminal trial. This type of action should be ILLEGAL!

I am also an atheist but I would not be a member of a group called 'godlessWomen' (or for that matter GodlessMen) because (1) I am not a woman but mainly (2) one's gender and one's lack of belief in a deity are not things which are relevant to each other.

I am only familiar with the accusations against Neil deGrasse Tyson because he is a science educator I like. I read what one woman said and even saw the picture of what he 'had done'. It has really become a sick world if an astrophysicist is accused of sexual abuse just because he asked a woman who seemed to be flirting with him and who was showing off her tattoo of the solar system whether she also had the planet Pluto (since he was part of the team that removed the title of 'planet' from Pluto), tattooed on her shoulder.

To be fair, we don't know that these accusations were all false, and many of them did not hve their careers ruined. Neil Degrass Tyson had his show continued (after internal investigations into the accusations).

Personally, the evidence I have seen leads me to be doubtful of some of their accounts (Silverman in particular) I don't know whether they are guilty or not (I don't think the accusations are or ought to be enough to hold up to legal scrutiny) but the accusations are not all 100% baseless or necessarily false.

We should promote being skeptical and not accepting of claims alone, but that does not mean assuming the claims are false (in the public sphere, of course courts have to make an assumption). It just means not treating them as though they are true and the accused is guilty from the offset.

Edit: to be clear about my meaning with Silverman, here is a lawyer (and former cop) who interviewed him talking about it a bit. I think he did a great job of looking at it from a fair, skeptical perspective.

Every atheist group have been a bunch of hard leftist SJWs, even going back 25 years. This was even pre-tumblr mob, just plain in-person discussion groups always devolved into a bunch of angry white knights and environmentalists pent on communism. It was even called Atheism+ for awhile since they kept mixing it all together. The whole thing took me aback at first, but at least there are a lot more level headed people who you can chat with, just not in any community.

I mean, maybe calling them crazy women wasn't the best approach. Allegations wouldn't be an issue if when the accused is a man, professional and social action was immediately taken against him. At the very least their identitities should be kept secret, as the accuser has the option to keep their identity revealed. Because there are two sides to this...when the accused is named, sure, other victims can feel compelled to come forward. But at the same time, the more people that come forward the easier it is for liars to hop onboard the wagon without having to worry about the burden of proof.

It would definitely help if the definition of assault and rape stopped fluctuating to cater to so many different 'victims'. Hello and compliments aren't assault, and agreeing to sex for a favor or regretting consented sex..or withdrawing consent during the act...that is not rape. That's making a minefield for men that they don't want to have to risk navigating by associating with women and also taking away from actual rape victims, both male and female.

Atheists are almost always statists. The idea of government acting on false accusations goes against their statist religion. Saying to them that someone can be wrongly convicted by the state is like saying that God isn't real to a Christian.
