nice one

People say girls aren't but engineers we are

[–]xAy3x 68 points69 points70 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yet they still aren't engineers. They're students..

[–]jstillwell 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Even when they graduate they aren't technically engineers. A degree in a stem field does not make you an engineer. Neither does a masters or even a phd. Engineer is a term protected by the government and requires most of the previously mentioned education plus 4-6 years of per reviewed papers and applying with the state/country.

I'm a software developer. Note the lack of engineer in the title. Though I have held several positions where my title does include engineer. I choose not to use that term because it goes far beyond the technical skills to be an engineer. Being an engineer is about ethics and morals, you must always put the consumer/user first. Especially with concern for safety. This last point is something that gets forgotten alot in software.

Sorry for the rant.

FTFY

Pretty sure most of this stuff is 90% women saying that men say it

[–]Tmomp 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Why are so many women and girls so mean and cruel?

Why do they feel so comfortable and happy hurting men and boys?

You could read the last comment as a joke, but even if you do, it's like they're rubbing their privilege of society not holding them accountable in men's faces, that they have so much power and privilege that men don't.

Why do we not hold them accountable?

[–]PlasticSammich 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

why do they feel comfortable hurting men and boys

only the sociopaths do. lets not get carried away and lump them all together now

[–]fuckCARalarms 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This, if you think most or all women feel comfortable hurting people then you're either around really shit people, surrounded yourself around bad people or youve just got a complex or a chip on your shoulder or something... Bad people cross gender lines. Learn to chalk it up to human nature rather than to something stupid like gender man. That's just silly.

[–]overtmind 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because they're propped up by society early on in their lives because people want to fuck them.

[–]fuckCARalarms 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Some are, some aren't like all people. I mean they are just people. There are many great women in my life and also many great men.

Again so do but some really don't, I know men who like to have power over women and hurt them because it makes them feel better about being weak themselves. Some women do this to men. It's a human, not a gender thing.

Women have some power and privilege over men sure, but men also have some that women don't. This view seems to be a little skewed, people only really have this power if you let them, and you seem to have ot built into your head that women have some form of power over you?

Why don't you hold them accountable? It's up to you, not everyone else, you can only do your own part to hold the people who do wrong in your life to their actions...

Maybe you'd feel better about this shit If you didn't act like such a little girl lol

[–]someguy3 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Lol that my sentence was grammatically correct. But I see you're the joke now.

(In case you still don't get it, mine was a joke on a joke.)

[–]I_play_4_keeps 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

You obviously have a shitty sense of humor if you think correcting bad grammar with correct grammar when the bad grammar was the joke in the first place then you're straight up retarded.

And I'm not referring to the structure of your sentence I'm talking about good vs well. Nice job editing your comment, dumbass.

[–]someguy3 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I can't stop laughing, look at the girl on the right and her sign, she hasn't managed to fit the "i" in properly for stupid. Thank you feminists for endlessly entertaining me for the past two years with your incompetence.

[–]ZenPyx 116 points117 points118 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

It's like Kim jong un. They have immense power, but are just so self unaware and stupid that they have no idea what to do with it.

[–]LucifersHammerr 86 points87 points88 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

It's kind of tragic when you think about it.

Women have always had great power even in so-called "patriarchal" societies.

Imagine if they used said power to pursue justice and real equality rather than playing "damsel in distress" and engaging in a never-ending search for more privileges.

Right now, women are being manipulated into fighting their husbands, brothers and sons while the billionaire class runs laughing to the bank.

[–]ZenPyx 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah. It's a self perpetuating cycle. Older people talk about how women are oppressed, younger women think they are still oppressed, try to fight the oppression that no longer exists, repeat.

[–]Ransal 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

actually, they have great power because of their stupidity and numbers.

[+]cynoclast points 9 years ago* [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

It's completely insane - but a fun thought experiment - since women outnumber men: If they all suddenly decided to fuck the nearest dude and keep him distracted for 24 hours, we'd have world peace overnight. Like they literally could do that if they worked together globally with nothing more than the power they were born with and coordination of when to drop the hammer. If that's not power, nothing is!

[–]n1x313 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you can be manipulated by sex that easily, you are fucking weak. If you think world peace can be achieved by everyone getting laid simultaneously, you are stupid. Use protection please.

[–]ZenPyx 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Houdiniman111 20 points21 points22 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]someredditorguy 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Honestly this would be a great picture if it were only the two women on the left.

[–]Brockelley 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah if it was a sign from the 90s or really, if it was a sign from the 70s. Birds sing after a storm, we should let people delight in whatever sunlight remains to them, a quote from a former 1st lady, a quote I aspire to follow.

But this is not that. We are all equal already here in the States, if people actually cared about equality they'd be trying to swing the pendulum the other way at this point, so that it might rest at center, not try their hardest to keep it tilted in the wrong direction.

[–]neveragoodtime 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The only thing stopping a woman from pursuing engineering today is her aptitude in math. That's always been true, we have had women engineers in the prefeminist past. It's just in the old days, more women recognized all the advantages of being female and raising her children while be supported by her husband, so why would they ditch that sweet gig just to be a middle level cog in a corporate machine?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know, for me these things at this point are just... "duh?"

Of course, girlz are in x, y, z positions. The only ones really making a fuss about them not being in x, y z positions are feminists themselves...

So feminists say girls aren't in engineering... and more needs to be done, and women take pictures or come out and say they are. Down with the patriarchy... I guess?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, that 4th grade penmanship really brings home her point.

[–]Ransal 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm still trying to figure out what they're trying to say since it's not grammatical.

[–]notacrackheadofficer 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Left: Everybody says girls can't do anything.
Middle: I'm actually a student! Clap for me and cheer like the superbowl crowd, because I -gasp- go to class!!! LOOK AT MEEEEEE!!!!!!
Right: I'm a pre-Victorian literature analysis major with a minor in operatic voice. I've been thinking about taking up photography.

[–]Garizondyly 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I heard Art History pays well - just make sure you snag those minors in women's gender studies and communications, you're a shoe-in for a fulfilling, relaxing job as a garbage man.

[–]I_love_black_girls 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I see girls with signs like this all the time, but I've never heard anyone say "I know you have a degree in engineering, but you're not an engineer because you're a girl". It's just bullshit they use to get attention.

[–]DMonitor 30 points31 points32 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

It's usually just "oh wow, you're engineering? Holy shit a unicorn!"

Chemical Engineering has a shit ton of girls majoring in it compared to the other engineering majors at my school, for some reason.

[–]Dismiss 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In my college 2 out of 3 students drop out

[–]Garizondyly 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is so true! Way more than the other engineering majors. Mech, comp, civil, software, aero, etc.

[–]iMathGoodiEnglishBad 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

beauty products

[+][deleted] -17 points-16 points-15 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I know it's a men's rights sub, but that's still super sexist. Normally you people at least try to pretend.

[–]orcscorper 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What's this "you people" shit? We all look the same to you? You need to get your privilege checked.

[–]baskandpurr 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So why exactly is that sexist? Please explain. Do women not use beauty products more than men? Do people not go into a field that relates to something they are interested in? Is women being interested in beauty products offensive? Give it a go. You might be able to find an actual argument rather than just knee jerk sexism! if you try really hard. I couldn't but maybe you can.

[–]stuffZACKlikes 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think the idea was there's a lot more one can do with the degree than make beauty products. They could go into pharmaceuticals, food industry, etc. I think whats sexist is that because they're girls they're doing it for beauty products. Some undlubtly are, but certainly not all.

[–]baskandpurr 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

There's nothing in the comment that says they are doing it for the beauty products or that beauty products is the only thing they will do with the knowledge. However, beauty products involve chemistry and women are far more interesed in them than men.

[–]ZeitTaicho 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"You people"? Talk about polarizing jeez..

[–]Source_or_gtfo 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When a post gets enough upvotes to start showing up on people's feeds outside of the /r/mensrights sub it brings in more people who don't give a shit about equality. If the feminist subs weren't so heavily censored you'd see the same shit.

[–]Tayhan 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I heard it referred to as fem eng it also had the highest dropout or transfer rate of engineering from what I remember well

[–]SirHoneyDip 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I went to the university they are at (University of Cincinnati) and studied engineering. There were plenty of girls in engineering (mostly chemical and biomedical). These girls are stupid.

[–]mully_and_sculder 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

To be fair it was a real issue... in 1983. Chemical plants that employ engineers are still very male dominated cultures, and there did need to be a bit of pressure to get the girls in there. Like most of feminism though, the battle has been won in 99% of places. Bland rhetoric is no help, they need to be shaming businesses who refuse to employ them because they are female, assuming such a place exists.

[–]Avambo 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, once there was a bias toward employing men over women, that's true. Nowaday it's the opposite. Companies are bending head over heels to get more women working for them in these areas.

[–]StealthNinjaKitteh 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

You see girls with signs like this all the time? In real life?

I've literally never seen a (radical) feminist like this IRL...

Then again I rarely see any girls on my tech campus, so they might have a point? Apart from the last sign.

[–]you_ni_dan 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They definitely do (other than the last line) I have been following tho men's rights movement for a while, and I dislike the part of feminists that try to belittle men to get an up in life. However, I'm a junior engineering student and I have seen a lot of sexism towards women in my major. They have the infrastructure for success, scholarships, diversity hires, sure all of that. But a woman that die better in school than me had to work harder to earn the same respect as me. I think engineering is a place that needs a whole lot more equality and while I don't like their method, I support their cause. Don't burn me at a stake for saying that women have a societal pressure not to do engineering because a lot of us treat it like a nerdy gentlemans club.

[–]Zerichon -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well it's hard to garner respect when they're dead.

[–]Avambo 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

Never said IRL. I meant that there's plenty of them online, but I've never heard anyone say what I did online or offline.

Sure, there's not many girls in engineering, but that doesn't mean that people are denying the fact that they are engineers. It just means that people might be a bit surprised when they find a CE girl for example.

Surprised != In denial.

Edit: word.

[–]absent-v 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's because she forgot to write the "i" and then squeezed it in between the letters after she'd already written the "d."

When I was in college, I dated a girl who was in the Electrical Engineering program...super smart and got straight A's. I dropped out and joined the Army, but stayed in touch with her for a while. She got married right after graduation and last I heard had 4 kids and had never worked a day in her field.

[–]Badgerz92 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It certainly used to be a problem, but it's not common today at all. There are still some stereotypes about engineers being male, but that's mostly due to the fact that 90% of them are male, not because people don't think women are capable enough

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

STEM, especially engineering, have high dropout/transfer rates. Ones you get to upper-level courses it can be difficult for many students to understand so they change majors. IME this happens more to female students than males (though a lot of males transfer too), you'll see a higher percentage of women in a freshman engineering class than you will at graduation.

From what I found out after I dug a little further into this, they worded their signs very poorly. What they're trying to say is that they're not just a stupid "version" of a boy. (I know there are a couple grammatical errors as well).

Being an engineer isn't defined by what you know, or what you study. It's defined by what you do.

Are you engineering anything? No? Then you're not an engineer.

[–]iMathGoodiEnglishBad 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's true. I graduated in Civil and I work for a construction company. I wouldn't qualify myself as an engineer, but that's what my degree is in.

Wow they really sucked all the positivity out of that message didn't they?

It's almost like they have to put men down to feel like they are of value themselves.

Fyi - ladies being an engineer doesn't make you smarter than anyone else per say. We spend hours at work explaining to engineers why their shit won't work.

Why do i have to explain the shelf state of contacts to an electrical engineer if she's so smart? I after all I am just a stupid construction and maintenance electrician.

No one is smart. We all just fuck up differently.

[–]Quetzalcaotl 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This really pisses me off. The school in the picture is University of Cincinnati, one of the best engineering schools in Ohio, and the school I graduated from, in Chemical Engineering. The ratio of women to men in my major was better than any other engineering discipline, and no girls I ever spoke to had a problem with (the lack of) women in engineering. This is so disheartening to see my own campus taken over by people who clearly don't understand what they are doing.

Picture was taken just across from Floor 2 of Tangeman University Center.

[–]Iappreci8thegr8r8m8 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Chemical engineering "student".

The problem for stem degrees isn't finding female students as much as it is producing female graduates. So many drop out and change their majors.

The ones who know what they're doing and willing to put in the work want to be respected for their work, so concentrate on the work and not their sex.
