So the author of the article suffers from the pre-established system that works against her, she was born into it and cannot change how it has molded her life and made things harder for her, but then goes on to claim that the the white male was also born into a pre-established system that molded his life to make him arrogant, privileged and entitled but it's his fault for being what society made him?

[–]Clockw0rk 37 points38 points39 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Racists gonna be racist.

No use trying to find logic in bigotry.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I can't believe her audacity of saying "my suffering". Suffering? Dafuq you're talking about? How is a black woman suffering in 2016's US? It's not Uganda.

Of course I wish she'd talk about it, but these people usually hide behind "safe spaces" to avoid discussing their indefensible beliefs.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Happens in every country to everyone

Cops are not nice you know

[–]Ipleadbeethovens5th -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The point is, The cop would not have done that to a white man, or white woman, and then it just gets worse from there.

[–]unklestinky 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

are you meaning to say no officer has ever killed a white man, or beaten a white woman to death unjustly? is that really your assertion?

[–]Ipleadbeethovens5th -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Be ridiculous why don't you? Watch the traffic stop, if you Think that she would've been treated exactly the same had she been a white male, there's no further discussion needed, you are beyond help.

I'm sure there's plenty of cops who have never abuse their authority, regardless of race, but that's not the point of discussion. Nor is whether or not white men are subject to police brutality, which they are.

[–]unklestinky 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah yes, the whole white people's deaths don't matter because now we are only Allowed to focus on the unfair treatment of minority victims of police violence. Never mind the FACT that Caucasians are the majority of the victims of death by cops.

You're calling me ridiculous for questioning your claim that a cop wouldn't beat a white dude, while at the same time you acknowledge that white men are also the victims of police brutality, and it's a FACT that white people are the majority of people who are killed by cops. You're probabally right that no further discussion is needed, since you are inable to consider that this problem is larger than race, but I guess we gotta keep it simple.

[–]TheLonelySnail 34 points35 points36 points 10 years ago (22 children) | Copy Link

I agree. I also have a really hard time taking any article, magazine, news report etc that uses 'white cis male' as a descriptor. I mean, what does 'cis' even mean? And why is his sexual orientation relative to him stealing a banner?

[–]Claireah 29 points30 points31 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Cis means that he identifies with the sex he was born with, as in he is male physically and mentally. The term itself is fine, but it has been ruined by SJWs and feminists by being used as an insult, as well as just using it when it's not relevant.

[–]questionnmark 28 points29 points30 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The term has gained an air of hate speech given how it is often used. Besides this it is a term that they put on people, and not one they take for themselves, so in a way it is also a hateful label.

[–]sp00nman24 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Cis means that he identifies with the sex he was born with, as in he is male physically and mentally.

Or more commonly known as "normal".

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Except it means normal... as an insult. As fucking idiotic as that can be.

[–]socialinjusticewar 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would have gone with "sane".

[–]fengpi 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well, the world really does need an epithet it can use to stigmatize people who have a sense of sexual identity which doesn't mess-up their brains.

[–]DrBillC0sby 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"Normal" is stigmatizing enough. The snowflakes need to feel special, so being normal is insulting to them.

[–]fengpi 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I think "normal" implies that they themselves are not normal, and even though they take pride in not being normal the implication is nonetheless a feeling-hurty thing and therefore BAD.

I think we need to have a special epithet which stigmatizes people who pay their taxes on time and don't shoplift because 'taxpayer' and 'shopper' aren't quite bad enough names to call them.

[–]TheLonelySnail 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I knew what it meant, I thought it was an acronym or something I guess

[–]Doctor_Loggins 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cis- is a Latin (i think) prefix, opposite of trans- but, like trans, has been turned into an independent word.

[–]Tezzeret 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well that wasn't really my point. What I meant is that I find it hypocritical that this person points out how the pre established white male society molded this person into the privileged and entitled person he is but she still blames him for what happened instead of the social constructs that "created" him. She talks about how she has to live within the confines of a society that creates certain disadvantages for her and how she doesn't feel bad for him because of the kind of person he is, when she readily explains that white male society made him that way. In her own argument, it's not his fault.

[–]Jesus_marley 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

it is merely a way of further refining the strata of the progressive stack.

[–]Stephen1985 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Cis means normal. That's how I read it anyway.

It's strange that it's taboo to say that being straight is normal. It doesn't mean that anything else is abnormal just that being straight is typical or usual. Normal for me describes what typically happens.

[–]inkoDe 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cis is a Latin term that is the opposite of trans. Trans means something akin to "opposite" or "across", cis means something akin to "here". Common use is naming chemicals, at least I think that is where I first encountered them. It's a stupid misuse of language akin to the common use of "litmus test" as a metaphor.

[–]socialinjusticewar 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Funny that it always goes with "white male", never "black male" or "white female", too.

[–]TheLonelySnail -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I hear ya. I have no problem with people being gay, bi, pan, etc, but can't I just be 'straight'?

Taking it back! No more cis! I am straight! Say it loud and proud!

[–]jakemasterj 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Small correction, being "straight" and the "cis" prefix have absolutely zero to do with eachother, other than that SJW's both use them frequently. They describe two separate things. "cis" and "trans" describe gender identity while "straight" "gay" and the rest of the alphabet describes sexual orientation.

[–]zap283 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Sure! And so are plenty of trans people. Straight just means you are attracted to the opposite gender. It's useful to have a term for referring to people who aren't transgender. "Normal" is patronizing, "non-trans" is inelegant, and cis is a perfectly good prefix just sitting around, so it works well.

[–]Stephen1985 -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Straight is also perfect and already exist. I refuse to label myself with a feminist label.

[–]zap283 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

"Straight" doesn't address gender identity, though. Hence the convenience of another term.

[–]L3SSTH4NTHR33 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have no problem with cis provided it's not being used in a demeaning way.

[–]Stephen1985 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So should I have a label for all the other mental issues I don't have?

[–]atred 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

White men build the society, the rest of the people have the society inflicted on them -- or at least that's their view...

[–]fengpi 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Didn't you see the first few minutes of the cartoon Megamind? Her spaceship landed in a prison and his spaceship landed in a mansion under a Christmas tree.

Cartoons really do help to illustrate her worldview.

[–]Human_Isomer 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The high of privilege told him that North Korea’s history of making examples out of American citizens who dare challenge their rigid legal system in any way was no match for his alabaster American privilege.

Can I borrow that mind-reading apparatus when you get finished with it? I want to try it out at the poker table this weekend.

[–]MasZakrY 38 points39 points40 points 10 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link

This is completely not a racial issue, it is a picture perfect case of equality. If a north korean native or 'outsider' committed the same act, the exact same punishment would be handed down. No special treatment across the board.

She turns this into a racial issue for no reason whatsoever and could have been committed by a person of any color with the same consequences.

Everything's a race issue to them

Seriously? Can we not lump everyone of a certain race and sex together and call them racist? The irony is a teensy bit suffocating.

[–]killcat 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You don't think a large number of blacks, particularly one likely to write this kind of article, isn't looking at things through an ideological lens?

[–]Hypersapien 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Spreadumm's comment implied that all black people look at the world that way.

Yes, a lot of black people do. A lot of white people do, too.

[–]killcat 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

FTFY

[–]WaitingToBeBanned 20 points21 points22 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, it is a bit of both. A white person would not have been able to do that, no matter how racist they were.

[–]mouth4war 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Black people can't be racist, they're the racee /s

[–]Hibria 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Blacks are known for turning everything into a race problem. They cry and complain when a thug gets shot by a white police officer, but don't give 2 shits about blacks in Chicago.... or Baltimore. ... or New York.

[–]FromTheFarSouth 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

«Blacks are known...»

You're no different from the woman who wrote this article. Unfair generalizations about a certain demographic are the cause of prejudices such as racism and misandry. By the way, being a "thug" is not a reason to be killed by the police. They should know how to handle complicated situations without killing a person. Those "thugs" are men and as MRAs, we should defend their rights.

[–]noir_wolf 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"being a "thug" is not a reason to be killed by the police. They should know how to handle complicated situations without killing a person" easy from an idiealistic point of viw but grasp reality for a second and look up the article i linked, also these "thugs" may be man BUT in the first place they are criminals: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=2ad_1419294813

[+]Hibria -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Okay, so pulling guns out and shooting at police... hitting cops and trying to steal a cops gun after robbing a store and assaulting the shop owner. Typical non thug behavior right? Leading police on high speed chaces, with no concern of anybodys life but their own? Clear violence towards white people and wow, even killing their own people for stupid hood crap. Not thugs though.

You're naive to think NK has a fair and unbiased justice system. The fact that he's an outsider absolutely plays into the whole affair and the treatment that he's getting.

[–]perverted_alt 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What did the guy do? Steal a poster or something?

WTF

[+]FreeBroccoli -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

That wasn't her point though. She was saying that a black man from America would have known better than to steal the poster, because he wouldn't have been used to being let off the hook via privilege.

Edit: To clarify, I'm not saying that her argument is either correct or not; I'm just saying that the person above me was rebutting an argument she never made.

[–]FreeBroccoli -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She was saying that a black man from America would have known better than to steal the poster, because he wouldn't have been used to being let off the hook via privilege.

She didn't say 'black man' explicitly, but she certainly implied the same, which was the ultimate gist of her argument.

Nevertheless, I wonder how many people here actually believe an African American man would have the temerity to pull off such a stunt in North Korea. I'm guessing, like, none. As in, nobody here believes that even Dennis Rodmam would attempt such a stunt as this.

Why? Because we all know it simply wouldn't fly, and black men know it better than most.

Is it because blacks are biologically deficient in a sense of humour, and utterly lack a predilection for youthful hi-jinx? Or, is it because a 'harmless' joke or prank can be deadly when you're black? Personally, I believe the latter, rather than the former.

LOLZ are a white person privilege.

[–]dazed_and_jaded -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]FreeBroccoli -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It seems we're the among the few in this sub that agree. It's too bad some people seem to think that opposing social justice is more important than seeking the the truth.

I think the point is a black person with enough money resources to leave America to go to NK would probably have enough common sense to follow their laws considering how serious the American justice system is with people of color.

How convenient must it be to blame all your personal shortcomings, all your own failures and mistakes on another race and sex? On "the system?"

Didn't get the job? It couldn't be that there was a more qualified candidate, or that someone interviewed better than you. Obviously the hiring manager hates minorities. Probably had a good laugh about turning you down w/ all his white friends when they went to the big meeting that night on how to "maintain the power structure at the expense of minorities."

I don't blame them for the ideology they've adopted. Always being victimized in some way, never being at fault for anything, always having an excuse. I can see the appeal.

It's the political ramification behind it.

Only a few years ago a massive sentence was handed down to Charlie Gilmour in the UK. His crime was swinging on a memorial. The sentence was so high because he was seen as part of a group protesting against the ideology of the UK government.

If the poster Warmbier stole said 'remember to wash your hands' or something like that, he wouldn't be getting more than a slap on the wrist. But stealing or defacing a poster that has a political message on it makes for a whole different 'crime', even in most Western countries.

[–]SouthrnComfort 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. But he is a fucking moron for not understanding where he was. As much as I wholeheartedly believe North Korea presents one of the world's greatest human rights crises right now and as much as I don't condone a punishment like that, I still cannot defend him. He tried to steal a poster in North Korea. He should have known he had this coming.

[–]L3SSTH4NTHR33 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If it was a large banner I could see the reason in like, a small fine. But there is no reason whatsoever anything like that deserves hard labor.

[–]Duncan006 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Punished, yes. The degree to which he should be punished... That's debatable.

While I would tend to agree with you on that, it seems that whenever I get in an argument on race the definition of "racism" always seems to change to suit the other persons needs.

[–]Duncan006 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I prefer to separate between defined racism and working racism. Defined racism is exactly that: the definition of racism if you Google it. What i call working racism is what's debatable.

[–]GrammarNaziSlut 39 points40 points41 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Believing that because of their skin color, certain people deserve the terrible treatment they receive...

Sounds an awful lot like racism, but I'm a white Jew, so I don't have enough oppression capital to substantiate my opinion.

Depends, you have "quantum privilege". Depending on the argument being made (and whether it is a full moon or tax holiday) you are either an extremely disenfranchised poc or a disgusting pasty white oppressor.

Yes, I'm sure Warmbier will have time after coal mining 15 hours a day to hop on his computer with Internet access and bitch about how oppressed he is.

If you want to talk about how Americans seem to think they can always break the silly laws of other countries and expect America to get them out of it, okay. But this:

The hopeless fear Warmbier is now experiencing is my daily reality living in a country where white men like him are willfully oblivious to my suffering even as they are complicit in maintaining the power structures which ensure their supremacy at my expense. He is now an outsider at the mercy of a government unfazed by his cries for help. I get it.

So your life is like coal mining in a prison camp? LOL okay. Not since slavery was abolished has a black person lived in that sort of misery in the USA. I understand it's been pretty bad in some places, but not to that level.

[–]ethanwnashville 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL @ another black woman pretending "state-sanctioned violence"(re: police brutality) is her soapbox.

Friendly reminder. Unarmed black people are 5x more likely to be killed by police than unarmed white people. Unarmed men are 19x more likely to be killed by police than unarmed women.

Black Lives Matter and Black Police Violence issues are an ignorant joke. Next time someone tries to tell you you have it easy as a white man because police target black people, laugh a lung up in their face and bury them in statistics.

[–]mikebong64 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Statistics are irrelevant for the uneducated and ignorant. I just laugh and go about my day. Until they realize that if you want to win somebody over you have to connect with them. Not get all up in their face and insult them. If BLM supporters want to get serious and really fix something do what MLK did. Don't disrupt society, don't riot, don't make a fool of yourself.

Am I the only one that doesn't believe this guy "tried to steal a banner" and that it's just NK propaganda and trying to send a message? Why do we believe NK when they say that's what he did?

[–]bufedad 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

[–]tallwheel 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The country itself won't go extinct, but countries ruled by authoritarian communist governments will.

[–]fengpi 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

There's a video of him stealing the banner.

If he hadn't done that, nork tv would broadcast a Korean-language dubbed documentary about homeless in Romania and tell everyone it was actually about life in the US. As they've done before. Romanian script sort of looks like English if you don't know what English looks like.

[–]harryballsagna 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Have you seen it? It's dark and looks fabricated. As NK has done in the past when they want food and money.

[–]fengpi 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You're right. I'm sure real NK guesthouses normally use the latest high-fidelity HDTV video cameras and perfectly-arranged lighting in order to show better, less-grainy images of their hallways.

[–]harryballsagna 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hey, thanks for the sarcasm!

You do know that North Korea arrests people for things like leaving a Bible in a hotel or for "not being there for the purpose of tourism"?

Okay, so let's look at what happened. A guy gets arrested, has to memorize a speech using non-native English and crying with no tears for a ruse in front of the cameras. He will be held for less than two years, as they always are, even though he was sentenced to 15 years hard labour. And all of this is over pulling down a sign.

I ask you honestly: do you think a country like North Korea is above framing someone for political reasons?

[–]fengpi 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry, my sarcasm comes knee-jerk at this point.

They frame people for stuff all the time; Kim has people shot and sent to gulags for taking bribes when, in fact, everyone in that country takes bribes as the standard operating procedure. If bribes is a shooting offense, everyone there needs shooting. That's the point, really: everyone is guilty of something, whatever it is. Kim once had a guy executed by flame-thrower for the crime of being a friend of his uncle after his uncle suddenly became an enemy of the state one day.

There's a difference between framing a guy and taking a minor instance of vandalism and trumping it up it into a major atrocity. "To frame" a guy means he didn't do it and they planted phony evidence or had phony witnesses. I think this guy actually might've done something dumb and they're acting as if he blew-up a building. So, yeah, I think it's a trumped-up charge instead of a fabrication. The norks will do either. Happily.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because if they were going to lie, they'd make up something that wasn't so lame and petty.

Fuck thank God I am a 2 meter tall blue eyed white male, shaven head, i live like a fuckin king, never ever ever subjected to ridicule. Fuck it's great. Not once has someone not cried fucking predjudiced over me as a manager, nope, fuck their insubbordination, it's because apparently being a shit human is the same as not being white. I also owned slaves too even though I was born and raised in Canada, the Capitol for slavers. I too also do not give a flying g fuck about the indigenous people here, and how fucking dare I own a house on land I do not own, fuck, sorry me, please, take it because my bank account is teeming with money because I don't need to work , people just pay me for being white. Nope, never ever been in a situation being subjected to racial slurs, my life threatened, and how i, personally, have made their life miserable by being an upstanding citizen. Nor have I even been called a pig for holding a fucking door open for the person behind me who just happened to be a woman. Nope. Being white is like a fucking walk around the may pole. In fact, being a God damn human is near impossible, I now wish I was a honey badger or something, because I am sick of listening to this shit.

Wow! Her daily existence is feeling the same way he does looking at 15 years of NORTH KOREAN HARD LABOR!!?!??!? Does she know anything about that country? 16 hour days of mining coal, without a head lamp, no gas masks, possibly no shoes, and hardly any light?! Where its preferable to have someone break your arm so you can get a couple weeks laying in a hospital? Having to hunt for rats in your bedroom in order to feed yourself. That is her daily existence?

I know things are pretty bad for minorities in certain parts of this country. But holy shit she needs to read a book about North korea's penal system. Read about their fake trials. Read about how this 21 year old young man might not have done anything. He might have simply spoke his mind at the wrong time, not bowed deeply enough when he was shown the "dear leader's" statue. This woman is a paranoid idiot. This is sickening.

Actually by soft I meant her body. I thought that was obvious.

Men fuck women because women feel soft and feminine. It connect men to the opposite of themselves.

American women have disgusting bodies hard not soft skin like leather and covered with hair like a man. American women are men with a vagina.

If men wanted to fuck other men, they would. Many do. However of rather fuck a woman and there is no such thing as an American woman.

Hard leathery hairy men with cunts. Physically.

Mentally, American women are entitled. They believe they have an entitlement to the products of male labor to male genetic material and to male bodies. They don't see the genders as equal they believe they're on top.

Men want women who are actual women. They have soft bodies and unentitled personalities. They are equal to men. But they don't use men.

If they honestly feel that way, they should emigrate to a nonwhite country. Easy!

[–]LasherDeviance -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

America isn't a "white" country. Blacks were here before most whites immigrated. Also, it was full of red natives long before that.

Granted, she's stupid. But you should probably check your casual racism.

[–]oxicide 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're confusing country and continent.

[–]wiseprogressivethink 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

America isn't a "white" country

It was founded pretty much exclusively by white men. Look it up.

Blacks were here before most whites immigrated.

Black people have always been a minority of the population. White people have always been the majority of the population since the founding of this country.

Also, it was full of red natives long before that.

The continent was, but the country has always been majority-white. Native Americans were a small percentage of the population of the 13 colonies in 1776.

But you should probably check your casual racism.

Aww, a SJW! How cute!

It's simple logic, really. If living in a majority-white country is just so awful, one has every right and reason to wonder why people who feel this way don't simply emigrate to a nonwhite country. There are dozens and dozens to choose from. There is no fence or wall keeping her here. She is free to leave at any time and seek out a better life in Zimbabwe or Haiti. So why doesn't she? Why does she choose to remain in this awful country surrounded by evil white devils who are constantly oppressing her? Seems...odd.

[–]LasherDeviance -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm the farthest thing from an SJW possible. I just notice that it's always some white guy telling someone else where to go as if it's not their home as well.

This article makes me want to say,"OMG you put words on the internet. Here is your Pulitzer."

I think she is looking at things the wrong way. When I was younger my and a buddy go to a pizza place. As we are walking out he sees the food license on the wall, snags it. Its stealing, or vandalism. The mind set is, no one is going to care enough about a piece of paper to actually do anything about it. Cops have more important things to do. They can just get a new food license right... Yeah I'm sure this guy knew the political climate, but did understand people that want your money, that will smile and be your friend, but are just waiting for you to screw up so they can ass ram you.

[–]shbro1 -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cops have more important things to do. They can just get a new food license right... Yeah I'm sure this guy knew the political climate...

You know your local political climate, and that's about it, I'm guessing.

North Korea is an entirely different ballgame. Foreigners, especially Westerners, are only grudgingly permitted to travel as tourists there. Each visitor is assigned a compulsory 'chaperone' who accompanies them for the entire journey. Only restricted areas of the country are available as tourist destinations, and the permissible travel itineraries are highly curated and non-negotiable.

Visitors are required to declare all their phones, cameras, laptops, and other similar devices, upon entry. The opportunities for unaccompanied sight-seeing and interactions with the local population are virtually nil, as are candid, unauthorised photo ops, and shit talking the DPRK government, even in jest.

This unfortunate guy would have been fully aware and informed of The Rules before he even crossed the border. Make no mistake. He didn't end up in North Korea on a whim, only to unwittingly run afoul of their excessively harsh judicial system. Nicking the propaganda flag was something that was probably on his bloody gap year bucket list, or something.

Your local pizza place and ruling constabulary have nothing on North Korea.

[–]harryballsagna -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't even think he did it. The video is dark and odd. The Engrish he uses is obviously written by North Koreans. No American has ever done more than two years of their sentence in the DPRK. And a lot of their charges have been fabricated in the past. This is a country that will kill a military official with a mortar blast for falling asleep at a function.

I'm pretty sure the whole thing is made up to get money and food.

[–]Esco91 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I suspect he did it, but was set up by N.K. The story is that he was approached through his church by a random woman offering him a car worth $10k to steal the poster. And lo and behold, he was caught!

The NK regime seem to have decided, probably correctly, that the best way to catch a westerner out without causing a massive backlash in their home country is through religion.

This article talks about white men. Her perception is that White males are the most privileged group of people on the planet. This is incorrect. This makes it a mens rights issue.
