Don't get it twisted; women didn't leave "in the good old days" because they were trapped, not because they were fucking ride or die. We literally had no choice but to put up with abuse and other myriad bullshit. Men cannot stand the fact that we are no longer forced to submit.

I’d also add, you only hear the stories we recognize/name as sexual assault. How many women don’t think that what happened to them was really assault because “it wasn’t that bad” or “we were dating” or “I was drunk”

[–]lalalaicanthearyou99FDS Newbie 412 points413 points414 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

This is shockingly common. I was date raped 4 times —twice anally and twice vaginally— and didn’t realize it was rape until thinking back on it. The reason I didn’t realize it was rape was just because it wasn’t violent. “Shhh shh... no it’s fine... you’ll like it...” as they penetrate you while you’re saying, “no.” Each time I would end up just waiting for it to be over because it basically felt RUDE or DRAMATIC to “make a big deal out of it.” It feels so insane to type this but it’s how it happened every time. And of course, there were all the many occasions when I DID scream and cry and put up a fight so they stopped because “I’m not that kind of guy, I’d never do anything you didn’t want.” Really? Is that why I had to scream and cry to get you to stop? You didn’t take my many NOs for an answer already.

I lost my virginity at 15 that way, I know I never wanted it but was kind of cajoled and bullied into it. I knew deep down that’s not how it was supposed to be. Ten years later I found out he and his twin brother were in prison for multiple rapes. I guess he was going to get his sex one way of another, he just didn’t have to put up with much of a fight off me.

If it wasn't your choice I don't think you have to consider that your first time having sex.

This made me cry, this is the exact shit I was thinking about when I made that comment. I’m so sorry that happened to you, you deserve better.

[–]GardrothardFDS Newbie 34 points35 points36 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I hope you are finding a way to deal with it and keep going. From listening and reading other women's experiences events like this seem to happen way more often than they should and nobody considers them to be rape, not even that bad. People see it as a legit strategy for men.

The biggest thing that needs to be addressed is the fact that there are three fear responses: fight, flight, freeze. Women actually tend to go with the third one in situations like this one. This makes sense, denying a man sex in such a situation has a high probability of making him mad and perhaps even violent, which in almost all cases is a lost battle for the woman. Also, the way we are brought up makes it so easy for us women to just leave a bad situation mentally, just detach when we feel powerless. We've been programmed to shut up and put up with things. This is a valid response, in fact, maybe even the lesser of all evils (fighting or trying to go away has a very small probability of actually stopping all that, it might just make him violent and you end up with rape and beating). Just because women are able to mentally leave their bodies when something bad is happening does not mean what happened was something they wanted. We really need to educate people more.

[–]aquietswordFDS Newbie 136 points137 points138 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

All the manifestations of sexual assault and rape and why something "not that bad" is still a violation should be part of sex ed. This entire fucking planet needs to start protecting our girls.

[–]SimplyRachel13 47 points48 points49 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

And educate our SONS!

[–]thowawaywookieFDS Newbie 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is the most important part!

[–]thowawaywookieFDS Newbie 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I had a mom ask me about sex Ed for her daughter. Sadly, I wasn't sure what to say as things have changed soo much since I raised my daughter.

Im wondering what would be helpful and at what age? What is taught these days?

I hear about stranger danger and good touch bad touch. Is it still taught as only bad strangers do this as opposed to the reality that girls are more likely to be assaulted by family members, boyfriends , neighbours, people at school, church, sport, etc.?!?

[–]aquietswordFDS Newbie 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I grew up in blue, liberal cities my whole life and still never got decent sex ed. I think it should start young as possible with the basics of understanding what boundaries are, how to set them, how to enforce them, and how to respect others' boundaries. Just in general terms, about toys and time and whatever else kids do. But then it really becomes every teachers job every year to do this since we are so programmed to do the exact opposite as girls. And add on how that translates to sex the older they get.

I personally consider stealthing (when a guy takes the condom off secretly) to be sexual assault which means that I have been sexually assaulted and/or raped by every single man I've slept with.

My mother is a PhD and one of the biggest PickMes I know! I picked up so much toxic shit from her growing up and I'm still having to do the work of unlearning it. She's basically become my personal model of what not to do and how not to behave. It's sad that education doesn't necessarily translate into independence and the ability to just exist and be happy on your own as a single individual. She's on her third marriage with yet another LVM. 🤦‍♀️

[–]EclecticBarbarellaFDS Disciple 20 points21 points22 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is rape. They are performing a sexual act that you did not consent to, and if they’re trying to get you pregnant intentionally reproductive coercion is 100% another form of sexual abuse. You don’t deserve that. We all deserve better.

[–]liz2eFDS Newbie 259 points260 points261 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

one time my dad was like “none of of the women i know have been sexually assaulted.” sir, you are speaking to your r*pe victim daughter who has never told you about it because a) your shitty ass attitude and b) it’s so painful for most women to talk about that of course no one has told you their story. for fuck’s sake.

[–]smaller_angFDS Newbie 107 points108 points109 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

YES. Apparently my parents only hear stories of men being wrongly accused by women. I wonder if I could get them to understand that the false accusations are easier to tell (over and over again, to law enforcement and others) than the real, traumatic stories? And that they are probably surrounded by people whose stories are too upsetting to tell them?

[–]huevos_and_whiskeyFDS Newbie 37 points38 points39 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not to mention many of the guys claiming false accusations might be rapists who are just denying it.

Wonder how many stories from his male friends he's heard that were really recounts of assaulting or taking advantage of a woman but he never registered it being assault?

Does telling yourself the story also count?

It took me years before understanding/registering/counting “rape”. It’s your brains defense mechanism, and it’s basically gaslighting yourself. I was raped 4 times 6 times 7 times if we count stealthing, and a person coming in you when you tell them not to.... I didn’t really register the information until years later. Still processing to this day, I guess.

- Once by a bf when I was sleeping. (and that’s only when I caught him

- Once by a hospital staff when I was heavily sedated. I was a teenager.

- twice I’ve had a man start anal with me with no warning. I dissociated and chose the personality that would ‘take’ what was happening. YUP. (

- a boyfriend came in me when I told him not to,

- and I was stealthed on a date. He gave me an std.

- when I came back to get my things from an ex, he wouldn’t let me leave his apartment, and blocked the doors, used physical intimidation, etc. almost threw up on him.

I was watching a stream today where the interviewer/twitch guy was asking these 8 women about their issues with guys/dating/the FrIenD ZoNe etc, and this panel of girls opened by discussing the normal stories of getting hit on and prepositioned by their university profs, unflinching, which led to the discussion of how the power is always held over you as a woman being harassed, because saying anything, you are in danger of losing your good grades or your job. (Big duh for most of us here)

Yet The host was so floored just by this common situation. He has a degree in psychiatry as his gimmick/thing/twitch street Cred, but has no idea about this fundamental human experience... he nervously says smiling, “Uh wow... uh this got dark fast!” the girls stoicly paused in unison as if to say ‘why are we even here? lol’ , one girl said “...... well..... this stuff happens“.

I think men don’t hear about this stuff because women only discuss these stories amongst themselves casually. “Rape talk” is our “locker room talk”. We feel men judge us, and question our memory and experience, or that such an event exists in the first place. Our lives are full of these situations, regardless of our attractiveness, age, desire to engage, and with my aforementioned experiences, I consider myself one of the fortunate ones, at least for now.

edit: thank you for the star!

[–]2happycats 78 points79 points80 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

question our memory and experience

I once had a male psychiatrist ask me, "did that really happen?" When I was in hospital and retelling the story of my assault.

No, you piece of shit human being. I'm just here for the flashbacks, and the crying and shaking under bright lights in front of people I've never met before. What else could I possibly want to be doing with my time?

Law enforcement does this and then wonders why so women recant their accusations. It’s infuriating.

It’s also exceedingly common for us to “white wash” our stories.

Either because we can hardly stomach to say the actual details, Or because we know all too well the way people flinch when things “get too dark.”.

It’s horrible that we need to censor our own stories or memories to sound “more believable” or not let others “know how damaged we are”. But that is the current reality. It’s not safe to talk about these things outside the comfort of people who can actually empathize because they have been there.

Absolutely. Men know and always have known. Saying otherwise is just their usual gaslighting.

You can't tell me rapists and the silent men that protect them, magically "don't know"? It's laughable. Men choose to ignore it. If our society wasn't reliant on the cognitive dissonance that men are desirable yet the most violent offender, there'd be a reckoning. Being raped is taboo, but being a rapist isn't😒

Especially online. Right after an assault I made a post in the now banned GenderCritical sub and /r/drama cross posted it to call me a slut, say I wanted it, all kinds of horrible things. I tried to get it taken down SO MANY TIMES. I finally desperately messaged a bunch of mods and one of them got it removed and a day later the sub had a 3 day ban.

I can’t believe Reddit allows mocking serious assault yet GenderCritical is gone.

I'm 30 years old and it wasn't until this year that I told anyone (two siblings) I was molested as a child and raped by my first boyfriend. There's a wall of silence. I would venture to say that the majority of women have been sexually assaulted.

Almost no one knows my story. I thought about another incident today that happened a year and a half ago and realized it was assault, but I can’t bear to think of being assaulted twice, so I’m not considering it that to prevent me from going into another downward spiral

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 132 points133 points134 points 5 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

I wish this wasn't true. Rape needs to be a death penalty offense. Rapists know women rarely are believed and that rapists rarely get caught.

[–]yggiwtmiihFDS Newbie 89 points90 points91 points 5 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

You know it would at least be a life sentence if men only raped other men. 🤷‍♀️

[–]NovemberinthechairFDS Disciple 33 points34 points35 points 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

I know you're right. Nothing worse for a male than to be treated like a woman.

[–]yggiwtmiihFDS Newbie 25 points26 points27 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

That, plus the prolonged forced physical invasion and immobilization of their person through humiliating means.

I wish men would really think about having to admit all of that, imagine having to tell an officer who's doubting them every second, having to have a nurse at a hospital re-invade them again while their legs are propped up on a table, having to relive the story over and over while you try to defend yourself in court. All for people to tell you "Think of the man who raped you's future, do you really want to do this?" And then he gets off on a month of probation or nothing at all --you retraumatized yourself countless times and worked so hard for justice and in the name of doing the right thing to be deemed a liar or for your rapist to get a slap on his wrist.

Then living the rest of your life afraid, flinching or being thrown into fear when someone gets too close to you or moves a certain way or says a certain thing.

It's no surprise people don't come forward or convince themselves that it wasn't a big deal or wait a week because the initial attack was too awful for them to process and they just wanted a warm bath afterwards.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Unfortunately.

[–]realityruineditFDS Newbie 46 points47 points48 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yup. And in the rare instance you get the man to admit he’s guilty on a recorded line (at the police station) the Grand Jury can just decide to not indict.

And since it’s no longer a case your restraining order is nullified.

When I found out he died a few years ago I wasn’t sad.

Men are scary. I’ve been mid sex with a guy and when he was going too far I would say no stop I don’t want to do that and then he would kick me off of him and I would feel so stupid. Just sitting there naked and feeling stupid and crying. Also had an ex, who if I would say no to sex- would kick me out and make me go home. So there’s times I had sex when I didn’t even want to have sex, I just didn’t want to fight. Or the ex who would secretly record me while having sex. One time I was blindfolded and he tried to switch out himself for his friend thinking I wouldn’t notice. I’ve been through so much, let me stop. 😫

[–]azureangel35FDS Apprentice 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Rasaya87FDS Newbie 12 points13 points14 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Thinking back, I was called a psychotic bitch for my first rape by my supposed friends back in high school. It was my first boyfriend who did it, after we had been sexually active for a good year and a half. I wonder if that's why I wasn't believed, even by the police. Ex first bf had been joking about raping me in my sleep for fun.

It probably doesn't help that I was still grieving the death of my mother, so a deep depression and no support from my father, much less the gaslighting, blaming and what I now recognize as emotional abuse from friends and family during that time, fucked me up for the 15+ years after, until recently.

Some partners later, I've realized I've been sexually assaulted one to many times by most of them. The gaslighting from back then made me think that it was okay for the guys to have sex with me anyway, even if I didn't want it. Coerced and pressured into sex was a common theme for me until early last year.

Still, me finally realizing all the situations where I should have just left didn't help when it came to the bs my recent ex did after my feelings for him dropped (due to his revealing his true colors.) 🤦‍♀️

I’m sorry to hear that :( I can’t relate to you however I just want you to know that it wasn’t your fault. That shouldn’t have happened to you.

i've repressed the hell out of mine. don't think i'd ever share, nor if anyone would even believe me as we were in a relationship at that time.

I'm thinking of all the pinning down and vagina- and breast-grabbing that went on at my high school. None of us ever reported any of them, because it was just the default way that boys interacted with girls.

If I think about it now, I realise that there were quite a few teachers there, including the principal and vice principal, who genuinely cared and would have turned the world over to do something about it. But your sense of self worth isn't provided by your school, it's taught at home, and most of us had been taught since birth that we were useless burdens who only ever got what we deserved. So I guess those teachers' real heart for us went to waste.

The same goes for the stories we tell ourselves.

I used to feel ashamed that I was attracted to the person that raped me (we were dating). I would later fantasize about having sex with him and it would turn me on.

It made me wonder, how can I consider it rape if I’m using it to get off to? Does it even count? I googled it, and apparently it is not uncommon. It is a way of retelling the story of the traumatic experience to yourself, so that you are not the victim. That was incredibly liberating to me.

I’ve done that with another guy that assaulted me when I was 15. I’m not even attracted to him, but I would fantasize about him molesting me exactly the way in which he did, and taking it even further (I had stopped him before he could actually have penetrative sex with me). It is a way of controlling the narrative in a safe environment.

Not to mention that dead women can’t share their stories.

I keep telling myself "At least I escaped, at least it wasn't actual rape, just the danger of it, at least I managed to kick him out of the room and locked myself in"

And there are so many 'good guys' walking around out there that don't think they're rapists. If she asked you to slow down or stop and you insisted on finishing inside her first, you're a rapist. I don't care how 'nice' you are.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i could never tell the person who did it to me, so they're out there walking with no consequences

Fuck yes... so sad but true.

[–]Newwavesupport3657FDS Newbie 10 points11 points12 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seriously; how do you know which one is a rapist or not???!

I'm sorry. Same boat. I don't even like to think about the handful of assaults from 13-25. But I'm also not ashamed anymore.

[–]oreooreooreosFDS Newbie 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah. Not your fault tho. It just infuriates me. It’s one of the many reasons why I’m considering not having kids.

Every time I think someone hurt me for their own pleasure and I did nothing bc I understood it was culturally appropriate...it lights a fire underneath me. A large, let's surgically emasculate all males fire.

When I got raped as a child I was too afraid to tell anyone. Adults tell you not to talk to strangers, to avoid them, to not accept gifts. I was told to come home after school every time, all my time was accounted for, yet I still went. When I got home acting strange it caused a fight and I was blamed for causing a bad mood. I did not tell them because it would have been my fault too.
