The case of Sam Gordon is not particularly impressive from a male vs. female perspective. Girls tend to mature more quickly at young age and often have a physical advantage in grade school. The divide in skill between men and women does not exist in the same way at 8 years old.
People just love rooting for the purported underdog.
If she can dominate at football at when she is 15, then I'll be impressed.

I (female) was on the boys football team when I was in middle school. I kicked their butts! I didn't join in high school, because I wanted to try volleyball (the seasons were at the same time) so until 14, I kicked their asses.

We had a girl on my Jr high football team, she quit half way first year after she got the wind knocked out of her the first time. At the time I was four nine and weighed thirty pounds less than her, but I was a better player I didn't shy from contact. I feel up until college football is more about fearlessness because few boys have their man strength yet.

We had a girl who was pretty athletic play on our high school team. She played the first game and was DRILLED by the other team on like the fourth play on a pass over the middle.... She quit the next day.

I dont want to make any assumptions, but at my middleschool the football team played flag football... was that the case at yours too?
[–]pashafisk3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
No, it was full contact. I'm from a small town where our high school football team is one of the only things we had going for us, so they wanted to start early. Full pads, full contact. One of my teammates actually broke aome guys neck tackling him during a game. That was scary.

[–][deleted]-3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There was a girl on our football team in middle school too and it really was not a big deal at all. The real problem is that people keep fucking breeding.

FYI: The entire world's population, if concentrated to the population density of NYC, would all fit in the state of Texas. -- http://persquaremile.com/2011/01/18/if-the-worlds-population-lived-in-one-city/
People really need to stop with the ERMAHGERD BREEDERZZZ claptrap.
[–]NotARealAtty11 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
yea, because living space is all that is necessary to sustain the human population. It's not like we need to be able to grow food or obtain any other type of resources.
The issue is that we're depleting the planets resources at a higher rate than we can sustaine relative to population size/growth.
[–]texpundit5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Actually, with the "everyone in TX" scenario, subsistence levels could be maintained with the farmland in the US alone.
http://www.simplyshrug.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=63
[–]NotARealAtty3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Which demonstrates how misleading using Texas was to begin with. Not to mention this is "subsistence levels" for food, assumes the current population and disregards all the other resources required by modern civilization.
[–]Lurker_IV4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
This scenario is far far better where the entire earths population is moved to Rhode Island
[–]texpundit-2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Actually, if you were on the outer edge of the crowd, you'd end up much better off in the long run (with the projected decrease in population).
[–]JeffreyGlen1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I pondered this for a bit, and I feel if that were the situation, things may actually improve as far as resources being used is concerned. Less oil because no planes need to fly any more, except maybe for logistics purposes, nor do we need long range military weaponry or ships. Public transportation would replace billions of cars. Texas doesn't get super cold so less heat would be used and geothermal and sustainable methods could replace cooling.
[–]wallyroos1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I dunno texas city wasnt the best place in the 2000AD universe
[–][deleted]-5 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yo dawg, it's not just about how we fit together, it's about how we harvest resources and TRANSPORT THEM to where we are. Your argument about subsistence levels is also retarded, because we can "subsist" with a hunter gatherer lifestyle, but no way in hell will the majority want to do that.
I never said that everyone would be in agreement or if it was feasible in the long term. I just said that it was possible.

I don't understand bullshit like promoting Ms. Gordon. I knew a guy who had four years of college football as an All-American offensive lineman, but failed his NFL tryout because he was "only" 300 pounds. Ms. Gordon will not be able to play beyond Junior High without being crushed into splinters. Why do they promote this nonsense?
[–]RobotBuddha29 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Why do they promote this nonsense?
Spoiled and isolated shitty middle class people who never see a world outside of either cubicle or kids park like it. They promote it because it sells their product to them and their disposable income. The mistake is caring too much about either a parasite or host that shouldn't effect you.
[–]ScarletJew727 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
No offense to your friend, but there are several NFL lineman who weigh exactly, close to or even less than 300 lbs. The reason he failed his NFL tryout was not because of his weight.
[–][deleted]1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
That's both true and not true. If his friend had maintained his skill level and motor at a higher weight, he may have been NFL material. In other words, the bar for a 300 pound lineman is higher than the bar for a 350 pound lineman with the same skills.
[–]Mayhemburger1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Then how do you explain the fact that there are far more 300-305lb linemen than 340-350lb linemen in the NFL?
Because not everyone can sustain 350 pounds on their frame; there is an upper limit of functional human size that is augmented by training and PEDs, but the limit still exists. For many, to be in NFL shape, that limit is closer to 300 pounds than 350 pounds.
Also, there are diminishing returns to size that can be overshadowed by increasing detrimental effects such as reduced energy reserves and slower foot speed. It really depends on the individual, their biomechanics, their drive, their training regimen, their diet, and many other factors.
[–]metsman91314 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yes, but let's take a step back for a second. This is a young girl who decided to play with the boys against social Norms, and was most likely ostracized by her classmates for it. Both of these kids deserve attention, and both of them should be proud.
[–]rogersmith251 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm not saying that we shouldn't think "good for her". I just think that a wheaties box and VIP treatment at the Superbowl is a bit overblown. There are lots of kids who dominate at sports, but this one is special because it's a girl playing against boys.
As I said, contrary to intuition, the fact that she is likely maturing faster than her classmates means that she is probably at an advantage physically and thus is not the underdog.
[–]enj7260 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
most likely is a worthless phrase. it means "i have no clue if this is true but fuck let's throw it in here"
[–][deleted]3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Actually, it typically indicates an educated guess, which has a significantly better chance of being accurate than a completely random assessment.
If it's cloudy as fuck and the weather man says an 80% chance of rain, and I later tell my friend it's "most likely" going to rain today, I wouldn't call that a worthless phrase.

I played some regional and provincial soccer (Ontario). At the age of 10-11 we would play against girls a year older and it was very challenging losing 5/4-0. Next year playing the same team of girls we would usually win but by only by a goal or two. As soon as we hit 13 all game were won by double digits and no one ever looked forward to playing or watching the games. When we were 16 the Laurentien University women's soccer coach thought we'd be a nice piece of tender meat for her team to beat on before the season so we scheduled 2 exhibition games. I can't even remember the score of the first game but the second game we decided to play a man short (without telling them) and complete 3 passes in the box before shooting. My point is the same as yours, at around 12 girls have the same strength or even a leg up but boys development physically after that is drastic.
[–]rogue7801 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
IIRC, there's a female quarterback playing high school football. Other than that, there are a few female high schoolers who are kickers
A friend and I were discussing this exact example. Could you imagine your HS girlfriend playing RB against the top ranked team in the state and getting hit as hard as possible by a 5 star recruit MLB? She would die, or at the very least quit... I would love to see a girl actually play in HS/NCAA/NFL, the problem is they just can't physically hang..

not really a double standard, dudes are better at sports. everyone knows this. that's why there is a WNBA and not just an NBA.
[–]Broccoli_Tesla21 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
But not in the younger age groups. Females tend to physically mature earlier and before puberty its not unknown for females to be physically stronger or at least as strong as males the same age. And then puberty happens and that is when males become better at sports.
[–]RavensAreAwesome-18 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Are you seriously suggesting that before puberty girls are physically stronger than men? L O L, man, reality check plz I work with kids, this is such bs it hurts my eyes to read it
[–]Funcuz8 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
That's not what Broccoli_Tesla said so just in case you're unclear , B_T was clear that it was males and females , not men and girls.
Having said that , yes , he's at least half right. Girls , on average, enter puberty before boys. With the increase in height and weight comes an increase in muscle mass. However , girls don't tend to be as aggressive as boys so don't project their strength. They also tend to have less interest in physical competition compared to boys.
Again though , on average , girls are at least as strong as boys until the boys reach puberty. After that of course the boys quickly overtake the girls in virtually all aspects physiologically except for the statistical outliers.

Honestly? Football is far more popular than field hockey. You get special treatment because a lot people like the sport, not sexism.
[–]MechPlasma12 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yes and no. Yes, in terms of that a hockey player would not get on the Wheaties box, and no, in that the boy is still treated worse than an ordinary player.
[–]Kardlonoc2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Ultimately Keeling did get to play, nobody made fun of him for playing and his own school and even opposing schools wanted him to play. He had a little injustice but other people, women and minorities, in history and today have had it worse. But a large part of this is that parents in the US have chosen, Soccer, Football, Baseball and a variety of other sports for their boys to play instead of field hockey. Generally boys play lacrosse over field hockey. I am mentioning this because its a matter of fact that that starting up a new sport in high school is generally met with opposition.
[–]SirDerpingtonThe3rd-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah, I don't think a girl doing well on a men's field hockey team would be news to anyone. The sports world is very specific about which sports they care about: football, baseball, basketball, hockey (if you live in the northern US or Canada), and NASCAR. Anything else, nobody gives a shit.

When I was in high school I knew a couple girls who were faster than everyone else except for a handful of guys. The faster (and older) guys and the girls were all trained sprinters of course, but the point is, it's not until later teenage years that women, no matter how hard they train, are unable to compete physically with trained men. I'd imagine those girls would have kicked ass at running balls down the field in the more junior years amongst a team of your average high school guys, easily. Elementary school? Go look at your local track meet time records... You will see a lot of similar times amongst the best boys and girls. Now imagine how a very fast girl compares to your average boy (you could do the same exercise for all ages even)? No contest.
Let the girl have her 15min of fame, it won't last into later half of high school.
I think the makers just want little girls to buy wheaties
[–]rosyatrandom3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
As a male field hockey player, I can tell you there is definitely a big difference between the men's games and the women's.
Women's games tend to be slower, more measured and technical, while men's are much more physical and competitive. There's much more hassling and running out of position for the ball, not to mention big hits and interesting tackles.
[–]IAMA_dragon-AMA3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Didn't get on the Wheaties box
That, right there, is the worst part of all.
[–]theskepticalidealist2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well actually it IS more impressive if a girl managed to keep up physically with boys/men. If a man beat a bunch of women in a race I'd be like "so what?". If a woman did it, I'd say, "impressive!"
And of course football is more popular than hockey, especially woman's hockey. There are far better (and real, and serious) examples of "double standards". For example, people usually remember the stories of Amanda Todd and Phoebe Prince. Considering the crazy ratio of male-to-female suicides the fact that I'll bet you no one that can recall these names can remember a single male who killed themselves makes it all the worse. We care about it if girls kill themselves, not if men do it. If there's 8 boys bodies, we'll only care about and remember there is a girl or two also dead. But Im sure these people will be able to recall the school shootings, when its a man that did something bad.
[–][deleted]2 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I hated playing contact football against girls in high school.
Being awkward sexually at the time (13) and 190 pounds, it felt immoral hitting a 120 pound girl. To her credit, one girl who tried out knew we weren't hitting them as hard as we hit each other and convinced me we weren't doing her any favours. She quit shortly after - in large part according to her, because of how much it hurt to be hit in the breasts each down.
I have no idea if it was true, or if there was some kind of special padding girls can use. But I know if getting hit in the breast is even 1/20th as painful as being hit in the testicles I would have quit too.

I don't have double standards when it comes to grammar. I just have standards, unlike whoever made this.
It should be noted that the girl was the same age as the boys she completed against and was bigger in many case. The boy was much younger 3 or 4 years as I remember and you can see in the pic how much smaller he was.

I ain't even mad. We're praising that little girl cause she's different. In the back of everyone's mind, everyone knows men are more athletic on average. So in this case, it's not a double standard, it's just people who are different.

[–]RavensAreAwesome-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
And here we go, one more of these posts making me think this place is sometimes as bad and extremist as some of the worst feminists. The "double standard" being pointed out right here has really no reason to be a problem.
If you people want to deny the fact that boys/men have a natural physical advantage in sports over women (you know that's why we have them competing in separate leagues), you're in pure denial of the reality. Once you've accepted that fact, you should also realize that there is no actual symetry between those two situations. Playing a physical sport vs. girls as a boy means playing vs. weaker/easier opponents, playing vs. boys as a girl means playing vs stronger/better opponents. It's so obvious it hurts me this got upvoted.
[–]Funcuz6 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Except that you're wrong.
You're not talking about men and women , you're talking about girls and boys. Prior to puberty , girls actually have a slight advantage physically.
Now , if you want to argue that we should keep sports segregated based on the presumption that girls are weaker than boys (untrue anyway) then a girl should have no business making a name for herself competing on a boys team of any kind. After all , haven't we all been told a million times that girls can do everything boys can do because we're all equal ? In that case , she should have no need to join any boy's teams.
In the latter case , as you clearly didn't notice , the boy is younger and smaller than his competitors yet still dominates them. The former case is one where a girl is competing against boys her own age while probably enjoying a healthy head start in physical stature. Not to mention that the boys are undoubtedly going a lot easier on her than they are on each other. Unfortunately for lovers of truth in our PC era , boys of that age will treat girls a lot more softly. Not to mention that the boys on the opposing teams will be lost on how to treat her as well.
No offense but I'm willing to bet that her achievement isn't quite as spectacular as Wheaties would like us to believe.
[–]RavensAreAwesome3 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
After all , haven't we all been told a million times that girls can do everything boys can do because we're all equal ?
I have not been told such a thing. Having equal rights as human beings is a thing. Being all equal is just reality denial, men and women are different.
And to come back to your theory of girls being at a physical advantage over boys thanks to their earlier puberty, seriously this is not true in the facts. Have 20 boys and 20 girls of the same age do any kind of physical contest (sprint, arm wrestling, push-ups, whatever...), the boys will always end up with the best result. Once again, I work with kids so I can see this by myself.
[–]batmanlaoshi-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
First of all remember that this girl will never play professional football or at all past the high school level.
Also there are many child protege athletes that do and do not get attention. Frankly, no one gives a shit about field hockey. Very few people go on youtube and look up "sick plays" on the field hockey pitch. This is partially because women are viewed as inferior athletes and are not worth our time. I do not agree that he should have been banned from his league. Still men do have a lot more opportunities to play competitive sports than girls, whether it be because of the number of male vs. female teams at a school or the social pressure on girls to be girly and passive.
People claiming that girls develop earlier than boys, I politely say, fuck you. This girl is far from jacked and she is smaller or equal size to her on field counterparts whether they are male than female. She is talented regardless of her gender and her stats are impressive for a boy or a girl. Yes she gets the star treatment, but she will soon hit a glass ceiling that poor little Keeling will not have to deal with.
One more thing- To the people saying men are better at sports than women, again politely, fuck you. This idea is tied to an extremely western idea of athleticism. We are more concerned with brute strength than finesse and agility. This is reflected in our movie culture- Arnold is an action star in the west, Michelle Yeoh is an action star in the east. Yes lack of testosterone makes women hit a wall in terms of strength training, but women can still keep up in other ways. Some of you may not think of these as sports, but billiards and table tennis have some of the closest competition between the sexes. These are games of finesse. I am also willing to bet that female martial artists following the teachings of Wu Tang are just as good as their male counterparts. A good example of Wu Tang style is Tai Chi which focuses more on inner energy and Chi than brute strength and aggressiveness .
I am male. I know we face issues of sexism, but pick and choose your battles. This comes off as the hegemony fearing the loss of their power.

Males have a competitive advantage over females due to higher testosterone production.
That's a scientific fact. You may not like it but it's true.
Males dominate in sports because they're 'doping'. Though they're doing so naturally.
If a GIRL enters a sport dominated by men it would be surprising to see that she did well. Because she is a female and either has higher testosterone than average females (which is possible) OR she is extremely talented.
But if a male joins a female sports league he is at an advantage. He's going to be faster, stronger, and quicker than his female competitors.
This isn't to be mean to female athletes. It's just a matter of scientific reality.
It's the EXACT same reason that we break out age in sports as well. I'm 36 and still have high testosterone for my age but NO WHERE NEAR an 18 year old.
This would be very similar to an 18 year old deciding he would compete in the 35-40 age range and dominating.
Of course he would dominate. He has a MAJOR competitive advantage.
Source: I'm an athlete and very interested in doping, performance enhancement, and longevity.
EDIT. Males have been competing and dominating in 'breast cancer awareness' runs which are dominated by females. It's nearly 100% females and males are discouraged to join. It's ILLEGAL to prevent them so a few males have been running (probably because they have a mother, daughter, or wife that has breast cancer) ... and they are winning.

Was this in the exact same school? Kind of hard to compare when it's in different environments.

OP you sexist pig. The world is finally showing some gender equality.
[–]Jimbohones-31 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
This kind of stuff gets posted all the time.
It's because men are biologically privileged to be better than women at sports. When a man dominates a women's league it's just not something to be proud of. I don't give a shit about Sam Gordon, but what she's doing is much more impressive.
The only reason sports are divided by gender is because there would be no female athletes otherwise. It's a double standard because this is one of those cases where men do have a huge competitive advantage.
If there was a sport that women dominated without excluding men a lone successful man in the sport would also be on ESPN. If men were allowed play on that field hockey team (and wanted to), there would be no women on the team.
Edit: There's also something to be said about her simply being one of the best peewee football players regardless of her gender. We tend not to care about field hockey as a nation.

Girls mature quicker before puberty, making them stronger than boys the same age. If she can win at 13 in will be impressed.
[–]bonked_or_maybe_not25 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
but what she's doing is much more impressive.
It won't be impressive until she hits puberty - sorry, but she has a biological advantage to be stronger and more coordinated at this stage.

"The only reason sports are divided by gender is because there would be no female athletes otherwise.'
So? How is that enough reason to discriminate against children?
Ther eis already a mencahnism that handles this - ability classes. in wrestling there are wieght clases. No one expects a kid in the 100 lb class to wrestle a kid in the 200 lb. class. Some kind of ability classification system will ork in every sport, and it will bypass gender.
If gender is so sacrd a boundary, why then are girls admitted ot boys' teams?
[–]QuestionC7 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
But Pilaro does not have a physical advantage over the girls. He's a thirteen year old in a high school league. It seems more impressive than Sam Gordon.
He's just good.

Far more impressive. He's half the size of the women he's playing against.
She's BIGGER than the boys she's playing against...
I agree. This an example of where equality will never exist. I want to get pregnant but that's never gonna happen either
Biologically privileged?
You need to quit swallowing that feminism. It's starting to cause you to mumble nonsense.
[–]Jimbohones1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You cannot possibly argue that it is not a fact that the vast majority of men are privileged to be better at sports than the vast majority of women. Just as women are biologically privileged to have longer orgasms.
I'm not a feminist. This is one of those cases where men have an intrinsic, physiological advantage over women. Women have advantages in many areas as well.
[–]ThetaOmega-9 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Wow. So your logic states that men are better then women at sports? How is that not sexist?
[–]Adam_Alpha18 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Because men are objectively better than women at EVERY SINGLE physical activity in the entire fucking world. That is not up for debate. That is an obvious, demonstrable fact of life. It doesn't have to be sexist or a gender issue. Men are stronger and faster than women. If you argue this, you are a fool. It's widely accepted that a really good high school male basketball team would destroy every single WNBA team easily. The lowest ranked male Olympic swimmer swims faster than the top ranked female Olympic level swimmer. Deal with it.
[–]Chazzelstien8 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yes, because biology
The female sex normally evolves to be visually and sexually pleasing to detour attackers and to have the males compete over them ensuring the best possible offspring
Men evolved to be the fighters to protect hunt and compete over the women with other men...
TL;DR Science, not sexism
[–]ZMaiden4 points 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm a woman who always loved to play sports, and even I know that men on average are stronger than girls. Women who can compete with men on an equal level or be better than them are statistical outliers. It's not sexist. Women are generally more flexible than men, is that sexist? There are lots of things like diseases or disorders that are more prone in one gender than another, is that sexist? It's so silly.
[–]Jimbohones-1 point 13 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It doesn't make them bad people. Believe me there are many women who are far better than I, personally, at sports and general fitness.
