Feminism = fight for equality of men and women. radical feminist= FUCK THE MEN.
I believe you have it wrong.
Radical feminism IS feminism now. All about Manspreading, Mansplaining, Air Conditioning, and getting scientists in hot water for wearing shirts and making off-the-cuff jokes.
It's also about coming out of the woodwork and claiming feminism is about equal rights ONLY when the movement is critiqued. Never about addressing the radical element in power that has taken control and steering the movement off the cliff.
[–]Rhaenysx 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Let's start off with something first: the hell is "manspreading" and "mansplaining" these words mean nothing to me.
Secondly, feminism has always been a positive thing in my life. It's never been about men for me it's been about society, it's been about women lifting women up. I don't condone other women calling my man names, just like he wouldn't condone these men calling me an "entitled bitch" for asking questions. So does that make me not a feminist? I've been inspired by so many "feminists" who have helped me navigate through how I've been treated (by both men and women) and how I've treated myself.
This movement challenges that so I had questions to ask.. and all I've been met with is hostility, told to piss off etc. pretty much the exact same behaviour as so called feminists have toward you.
[–]mc_blubberson 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Feminism is a hate movement, get your shit together. MRAs do not have one single incident of issuing bomb threats, while feminists are well known for radicalizing and issuing bomb and death threats. Rarely is there a radicalized movement of MRA, and the few decent feminists there are in society had their ideals drug through the mud by self entitled women whom see fit to make it their life goal to terrorize people who don't share their narrative. It's clear you're a feminist because half of your words you typed are IN CAPS and your definitions of gender equality ideologies are literally "the fight for equality", not a movement for equality. Piss off
[–]Rhaenysx -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I feel like I don't fit into that definition at all. I'm not hateful, I love the men in my life. My brother, my dad, my boyfriend, my friends are all fantastic men.
I've been groped in public multiple times, had my clothes undone, stalked, harassed, been verbally abused all by complete strangers - but I don't turn around and curse all men for what's happened.
I'm just someone who simply wants that to not ever happen to my future daughter and feel like that can be achieved through awareness in society. So what do I call my "movement" ? Is it still hateful feministic bullshit?
You have an opportunity to teach someone about your cause and I'm trying to open a dialogue - so why tell me to piss off? That seems pretty hateful... Which is something MRA is suuuuper against, right?
[–]vhisic 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Definitely. Drop the cringe, adopt proof-based arguments. I don't think "We are men, <argument here>" will sway anyone in the right direction.
We cannot rely on the cheap methods our adversaries are known to fall back to, because we cannot as easily invoke emotional reactions ("pull the victim card"). We need facts to back up our claims. There are plenty so there is not a problem. But we should not fall back on simple rhetoric.

our adversaries
What adversaries are you referring to? The faceless, anonymous mass of all of society that is responsible for men's issues in modern society? Because that's where our problems lie, in the sexism built into our very culture and imposed ON everyone BY everyone. Anyone claiming otherwise is just scapegoating and hurting the goal of actually putting an end to the gendered problems we all deal with. There is no "enemy" here, the group responsible for our problems is the ALL.
[–]EvilPundit 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Feminism is an ideology based on the false notion that men exploit and oppress women. Naturally, feminists see men as enemies, and attack them in any way they can.
It's gone way past the point that feminism can claim it is fighting against sexism. Feminism is fighting against men, and is itself the biggest source of institutionalized sexism in the world today.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
He/she/it is from SRS. Not worth debating the rancid farts that waft in from that graveyard of critical thought.
[–]Afrobean 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Feminism is an ideology based on the false notion that men exploit and oppress women.
Feminism is a broad philosophical concept. It doesn't mean what you said, nor do most feminists subscribe to that understanding, although a minority may. Because the concept is so broad, there are many different ways of thinking about it, many of them in conflict with other feminist ideas. To put it simply, most feminists are just interested in ending sexism and achieving gender equality, most feminists are not interested in discriminating against or hurting men at all. I suggest you interact directly with some feminists, even try participating in their activism against sexism. You may be surprised to find that the boogeyman in your imagination has almost nothing in common with reality.
Feminism is fighting against men
The branches of feminist thought which are legitimately anti-man have far fewer supporters than the number of MRAs who are just misogynistic pieces of shit. Radicial idiots who call themselves feminists are worth no more than the radicial idiots here who might say that all women are lying whores. That type of "feminist" is incredibly rare and isn't going to actually achieve anything, just like the anti-feminist idiots here who don't actually care about men's issues and just want to push their agenda of hate by spamming their propaganda wherever they think people might fall for the insane message. Feminists aren't about hate or fighting, the only thing they fight is hate.
[–]coke501 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
The very core of feminism is patriarchy theory. Patriarchy theory states that the system is designed for men as a class to exploit und opress women as a class. To say you are a feminist and not subscribe to this concept is like saying you are christian while not believing in christ.
That type of "feminist" is incredibly rare and isn't going to actually achieve anything
You don't have to say that you are anti-men to be anti-men. Those rare types of feminists have succesfully installed the VAWA, opposed default shared custody, opposed the end of lifetime alimony, forced a university to cancel their International mens day event just to name a few.
I suggest you read this one, because Karen says it better than I ever could hope to. It's a long read but what you suggest feminism as a movement does is addressed.
[–]Afrobean -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
The very core of feminism is patriarchy theory.
This is not true. Please read this:
Feminism is a broad philosophical concept. It doesn't mean what you said, nor do most feminists subscribe to that understanding, although a minority may. Because the concept is so broad, there are many different ways of thinking about it, many of them in conflict with other feminist ideas. To put it simply, most feminists are just interested in ending sexism and achieving gender equality
Most feminists may be on board with bashing the Patriarchy, but the point still stands and feminist thought is broad enough that there is a lot outside of that. Feminism is not any one clear-cut thing other than being opposed to sexism, but when you claim it is, that makes you wrong. There is no head, no leader, and no defined goal other than achieving equality between men and women. If you are opposed to sexist oppression and an advocate for gender equality, you should be participating in the movement. If you're dissatisfied with the way you see some feminists fighting sexist oppression, all the more reason to actively participate in the movement, so that you can help the movement's only defined goal of stopping sexist inequities. Fighting against the goal of equality just puts you the on the wrong side of justice.
[–]probpoopin 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Maybe try again but on SRS? I'm sure they will let you redefine anything you want and not actually have to back it with anything of sustenance or value.
Define "concept". If a purported "concept" can be so "broad" that it covers completely non-overlapping and mutually exclusive sets of dogma, then it is not a concept.
Also go back to SRS and take your microbrigade with you.
[–]coke501 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Are we at tumblr now and just redefine everything so it doesn't contradict how we feel?
When I take your 'simple' explanation
To put it simply, most feminists are just interested in ending sexism and achieving gender equality
then MRAs are feminists too and vice versa. If that were so you would never hear anything bad about the MRM from feminists. But you do. All the time. Guess why.
To put it simply, a lot of feminists are just interested in ending sexism and achieving gender equality (superiority is OK too) where they think that girls get the short end of the stick.
It does not matter what you think feminism is and does. For the former: There is a definition taught in academia and patriarchy theory is at it's core. For the latter: The current attack on due process rights for students as well as the moronic 'affirmative consent' bullshit are feminist ideas pushed by feminists that hurt men almost exclusively.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
What you're describing is feminism's Patriarchy insanity.
[–]Afrobean 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Yep. The Patriarchy is just another name for this weird sexist system that we are all a part of, that hurts everyone, men, women, and trans people too. We are all complicit in it as it's a systemic problem, and we all need to proactively work together to resolve the problems that we all face. Equality for all can't be achieved unilaterally, we have to help each other.

That doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
Granted, I usually browse /r/all when I'm on Reddit, but there's been plenty of times I've seen stories on the front page that were on the subject of established feminist activists expressing disdain for third wave feminism.
If you search on YouTube for "third wave feminism" most of the results on the top several pages will be various videos titled variations of "why I hate third wave feminism," and many of those videos feature women and feminists.

are actually shunned by actual feminists who are looking for equality.
Maybe in the minds of "actual feminists", but radical feminism is what dominates political and scholastic communities, the places where the most propensity for social and legal change are. If "actual feminists" remain silent, then their views are essentially worthless when defining the movement.
I keep saying "actual feminists" because radical feminists are still feminists.
[–]ePants -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
You're falling in the same old trap of judging the whole bunch by the actions of the few.
[–]FeierInMeinHose 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
I'm judging the lot based on the actions taken by supposed leadership, which happens to be part of the radicals. Judge movements based on their actions, not based on what the people in the movement say they are for.
[–]ePants -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Feminism is a movement, not a single organization. Feminism doesn't have "leadership." Granted, there are feminist organizations, but they are merely parts of the whole movement.
Judging the overall movement (including the peaceful, pro-equality types) based on the self indulgent actions of a few female chauvinists is the same thing as judging all Christians for the attacking planned parenthood, or blaming all Muslims for terrorist attacks.
[–]FeierInMeinHose 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Except it's not because you don't have a significant amount of feminists decrying the bullshit that feminist activists are pushing, things like "America is a rape culture" and "all men are potential rapists". Again, you're supposed to judge movements on the actions taken by them, not by what they say they are for, ie, talk is cheap.
[–]ePants -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
You're not understanding me, so I'll try to make it clearer.
This is not a case of the same people saying "We stand for equality" while also bashing men and demanding safe spaces. Those aren't the same people doing those things and saying they want equality.
What's happening is some people are using the term feminism to label their hate and SJW agendas, while other people who are calm and reasonable feminists, are just as pissed off at the first group as the rest of us are.
[–]FeierInMeinHose 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I don't care how pissed off they are if they don't do anything about the first group controlling the political agenda behind the feminist label. People who call themselves feminists but don't actually do anything may as well not be feminists, because actions and outcomes are what matter, not what goes on in your head.
[–]ePants -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I don't care how pissed off they are if they don't do anything about the first group controlling the political agenda behind the feminist label.
Your still talking like "the feminist label" is a single organization, or a company, or a vehicle which can only move in one direction at a time.
As you said, it's a label, which anyone can and does use for their own individual purpose. It would be wasted effort for equality-minded feminists to spend all their time arguing with female chauvinists. Instead, they spend their time furthering the their own actual interests - gender equality.
You're still judging people based on other people's actions and acting like it's reasonable, which it isn't, and never is.
So that's it? You're just pissed off?
Why aren't you speaking out against them instead of coming here flying the flag for a movement that has been taken over by these radicals?
[–]QuestionSleep86 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm genuinely kind of confused by your comment, given the context.
Who is the "them" that you want to ask? Since you said, "another," like I should know exactly what you're referring to, what are the previous "unknown unknowns" you're talking about? Who is the "we" at the end that's split 99-1? And what's the division?
The unknown unknown is a threat that Donald Rumsfeld promised was hiding around every corner to keep us at war for the Bush's for decades. They are the 1% of the population who hold as much wealth as the 99% . their wealth is burgeoning, and you can tell why if you look at a historical graph of income inequality in America. If you look at that graph you will see a massive downturn during the presidency of FDR, and you will see all of FDRs gains erased by Bush1 and Raegan. You me and everyone making under a mil a year are the 99 we are literally the 99 percent of the American populace that is poor and disenfranchised. I've come to believe firmly, as someone who always checks facts and sources that both parties are complicit. Feel free to check my posting history. All I do is spread the word on this.
There is an enormous.ous media conspiracy in America to manufacture the content of the governed. The negative stereotypes of men and women have all come from Hollywood and the ad agencies. They've been cramming hyper masculinity, and hyper femininity down our throats so long we've forgotten there is even an alternative. YES, I believe both parties (DNC, GOP) are complicit in this. If we are split 50-50 red and blue or more pertinently boys and girls, then we cannot face the incredibly wealthy together as the 99%.
That's why I took a second to speak up when I saw insidiously divisive rhetoric, and a fist for a symbol. If their name is not Walton, Bush, Clinton, or Koch; if they don't work in Wall St, Silicon Valley, or DC, or Hollywood, then they are my brothers and sisters regardless of race, politics, gender, or religion.
Have you heard of Diane Feinsteins CIA torture report? I'm here to tell you that if we cant stop a black site prison where people are tortured to death, and gives " forced rectal feeding for no stated medical reason, then we will not be able to stop death camps.. They are scarcely distinguishable. The time has come to say enough is enough, and give the power to the 99% of the population now without.
If you want to be co vinced, watch the PBS front line series on the CIA torture report. Or a 2004 BBC series called "the power of nightmares." Or feel free to check through my other posts.
I'm spreading the word that I won't let my tax dollars be used for torture. I'm not waiting till the death camp gets bigger. I'm not waiting til it goes past Muslims. Time is coming for a change. It's time to look past the manufactured wedge issues and work together. It's time to redistribute American wealth away from the richest 1% remember if you make under a mil a year that AINT YOU. It's time for campaign finance reform. It's time to really govern by popular opinion like we've been pretending to from the start.

I didn't accuse the sub of generalizing. I accused it if something specific. And when MRA talks about "feminists" they are almost always talking about this very narrow definition.
[–]ePants 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Ok, a few things here.
When you say "MRA," that's different than saying"/r/MensRights," because not everyone who cares about men's rights is active in that sub. - But even if you were only talking about the sub, it was still ironic and hypocritical.
You are generalizing, by claiming that all MRAs "love pretending that female chauvinists dominate feminism."
You are generalizing by bashing an entire group for generalizing.
[–]tleavesdogears 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I had some time to reflect, and you're right: and I'm sorry for generalizing.
I will say that when I have logged onto r/mensrights, r/mgtow or gone to A Voice for Men or Return of Kings, what I do see more often than not is a very anti-feminist dialog whenever feminists are discussed which labels the vast majority of them as rabid, reactionary man-haters.
That doesn't at all reflect the feminism that I've encountered as a whole. Are there bad feminists? Of course.
And I'm sure you can and will say the same about MRAs. That's the trouble with the internet: you can always find what you're looking for.
I suppose my difficulty is with the fact that if you look at feminist sites or subs, I don't think you see the kind of anti-male rhetoric on any kind of scale that compares to the anti-female rhetoric on the male equivalents.
Maybe I've been looking in the wrong places.

Let's not adopt the idiotic form of propaganda by painting a group of potential allies as an evil "other".
[–]shangrila500 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
If you're talking about the most vocal then yes, they want more power and more privilege. The only thing they could care less about is sexism, they just use it as a means to an end.
[+]Afrobean -7 points-6 points-5 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
This is unequivocally untrue. Please, you're not doing anyone any favors by spreading misinformation. Women are not the enemy, feminists are not interested in hurting men or taking their civil rights. Whoever told you they were was lying or blindly spreading misinformation. I have met hundreds of feminists and not once have I ever met one who was interested in hurting men to help women, they are basically universally interested in ending sexism. There may be some radical fools out there calling themselves feminists, but would you disregard all Christians because of the KKK's terrorism? Should a person disregard the Men's Rights Movement because some MRAs are toxic scumbags just using the movement as an excuse to spout vitriol, slurs, and hatred?
[–]DaShazam 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
While it's fair to argue that it isn't the goal of feminist's to take away the rights of men, they do tend to do this quite a bit.
Note that these aren't just individuals acting but whole organizations like NOW and the London Feminist Network that are actively fighting against what many people would consider gender equality.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Women are not the enemy, feminists are not interested in hurting men or taking their civil rights.
Subtly implying women and feminists are the same group, and playing the "no true Scotsman" card in the same comment? Gee I wonder if you're a feminist. I don't think anyone but a feminist would claim that out of "hundreds" of feminists, not one can be called a misandrist. That is just a flat out lie. Anyone who has unwittingly encountered a handful of feminists has run into out-and-proud man-haters.
And of course lots of feminists are interested in more than "ending sexism", whatever that even means. Of course they are. I mean, are you high, asking that? Most of what feminists label as sexism is just biological reality which they deny, so Feminists want to punish men for being men whether they know it or not, and oftentimes they do not know it (at least according to their rhetoric). They deny that men are inherently different, for the most part, from women despite what interspecies studies reveal plain as day—because facts are inconvenient to their narrative (and their narrative is therefore harmful to people living in reality).
Feminists think men owe women the things which men built for themselves and other men. Places in clubs and societies built by men for men. The benefit of institutions built by men for men. Men owe women nothing of the sort.
Men's rights mean nothing more than the rights of half the population. Feminism, by contrast, means entitlement, Marxism, the inversion of hierarchies, social aggression, shaming, statist coercion. IDGAF if all MRAs are "toxic scumbags" and ten times more sexist than me; the project of men's rights is by definition a project of rights. Not so in the case of feminism. That is the difference. Period.

Judging by the way the talk about men's rights groups and pull fire alarms when they try to gather? Yes. The claim that they are egalitarians is laughable.

I'll allow there are individual feminists who aren't looking to make you apologize for your gender, but they are almost always pretty ignorant of academic feminist thought. Patriarchy theory is the core thesis of feminism, and it's hate, full stop.

They may not want men to apologise for it, but many certainly think men owe them something in return for the privilege.

Legitimate question: those of you that have ever "hated" yourself for being a man, when the fuck did that even start? And why?
Like - I get hating your situation as a man, hating the way that men are treated or portrayed, and hating the expectations placed on men simply for being men. That I understand. I don't need to have that explained to me.
However, I've never hated myself for being a man. How does that even start?
[–]UtahStateAgnostics 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I wouldn't go so far as to say that I "hated" myself, just that I saw myself as inherently more flawed naturally than women, for a variety of reasons. One is that I noticed that most "sins" (as relgions define them) were things that men generally did in greater numbers than women, and most crimes were that way. When I heard the term, "toxic masculinity," or, "testosterone poisoning," I figured that there must be some level of T that some men have, and some men have more that makes them do crazy shit.
I saw shows like Home Improvement where every week the man of the house screwed up and got yelled at by his wife. Even on the one episode where the wife screwed up, she yelled at him for over reacting. I internalized that I will never win a fight with a woman.
Ironically, it was seeing one of Anita Sarkeesian's videos that made me wake up. She made some claim that was a little too much for me to swallow, and there also happened to be a link on the side bar for "Girl Writes What" (Karen Straughan) that I watched. That was what made me realize that there was a whole other side to the story that I had never been taught or seen in media, and one that I myself hadn't considered.
[–]Lanoir97 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
For me it came around slowly and I didn't realize until I was about over it. I found myself constantly feeling like I needed to apologize to women and minorities because I looked at them or said hi to them. Then I realized it was stupid, I didn't do anything.

[–]tleavesdogears -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I do think the ways schools and workplaces have tried to talk about consent has been ultimately harmful and lazy, because in the end it's more about protecting themselves than it is about protecting students.
Because by and large, I don't know personally of woman who consider an advance to be harassment unless it's accompanied by unwelcome touching, or if they've said no and their response is met with persistence or hostility.
[–]Lanoir97 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I've personally not got much experience in advancing on women, but it seems I'm constantly being told I need to get consent. I nee consent, but no one is ever saying she needs to make sure I consent. It also doesn't help that consent seems to be wishy washy in that it can be taken away at any time and without telling anyone. I mean if I'm balls deep and she changes her mind and doesn't tell me, what am I supposed to do? I don't know, but it keeps me up at night.
[–]tleavesdogears 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
If she doesn't say anything, how could she have removed consent?
What they mean is that if she literally says "stop" or "no" partway through, then you should stop. If she passes out, you should stop. If she falls asleep, etc.
I agree that consent should be taught equally, and that the current perceptions of sexual desire mean our society assumes men always want it, which makes it harder for them to come forward with their own abuse.
[–]lachiemx 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
When you grow up reading that men are bad, in every sense of the word, you start to believe it because you don't know what's good and bad in the world yet. You internalise shame, much like a black person might have in the 50s. I did, only got out of it when I was 25 or so. Stole ten years of my life.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Feels that it lasted so long.
This lasted for maybe a year of my life from about 15-16. (There was feminist propaganda in the school, and we had a few teachers who were insane feminists) The one day I woke up and thought "Who fucking cares? I'm not one of the people they are talking about." I was sitting in an insane feminist teachers class when she starts talking about rape culture, and I say "How many men support this you think?"
"At least 1 in 2 if not higher."
"So half this class?" (it was mostly men) and the class room started laughing. I was told I supported rape culture for arguing with her, and kicked out of the class for the day. The principal asked her what happened and me what happened and he just looked at me and said "Please don't rial her up." in a kind of pleading way, after she left.
The TL;DR the principal knew she was insane, but couldn't stop her because he knew her, and her students would go psycho if he told them to take the "Men are rapists" propaganda down.
From that day forward I became a 'prick' to everyone like her, by challenging their beliefs. My current girlfriend loves the fact that I'm an anti-feminist. She gets a laugh out of it when I debunk the stuff they say.
Then I went to college...and it got much worse...
[–]erenthia 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Probably around first grade. I also hated myself for being white and straight (not sure how that last one happened considering my upbringing) I felt personally responsible for every bad thing that happened to women and minorities retroactively for 200 years or so. Hey you know how kids can be. Real problem was that no one disabused me of this notion and it festered for decades. I still struggle with it.

Right. Not all Muslims need to apologize for the horrible minority. Not all blacks need to apologize for the badness that comes from some blighted communities. As often as I do look at the demographics of crime, to hear a black people say, "I'm one of the good ones" just means that they have had fallacious collective shame levied against them to the point of damage.

[–]DaShazam 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
but there's no need to imply too much about the state of society by it
I think there are many people in this subreddit who would disagree with you. There's quite a bit feminist media that suggests that men, by gender alone, are prone to violence and rape.
The way law is currently practiced, men are often assumed to be guilty until proven innocent if the crime they are charged with involves any harm to women- while women responsible for domestic abuse or rape will often go unpunished or be completely ignored.
Fathers are assumed, legally, to not be as good as parents and will almost always lose primary custody of their children, even if they were a stay at home dad and the mother was the primary provider (in this scenario though they are still expected to pay child support).
Also, men are committing suicide 4 times as often as women are- so there definitely seems to be something wrong with being a man in the current state of society. I'm not sure how not addressing it is going to help anything.
[–]DemiDualism 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Im part of the community here, I'm well aware of men's issues. The point i was making isn't that men don't have issues. If i was reborn and had to select a gender, I'd still check male is all. Comparably, it is the better off gender. We aren't victimized to the extent that "it's sad that something like this needs to be said". That's a victim complex perspective. The attitude we fight for is one of strength and fairness, not pity. Overcoming the failings of society and helping lead a movement for making things better for everyone, not wage a victim competition with feminists
[–]DaShazam 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think a lot of women would still check 'woman' too. I don't think a preference of gender is any kind of indication of who has it better- which is a stupid conversation to have in the first place because that's entirely subjective and based on your personal values.
I do agree with you on not allowing victim complexes to become a major component of the MRA movement (I'm actually discussing this somewhere else right now as well). I will also agree that this does seem to paint men as oppressed in some sense but I'm not sure how else you would draw men's attention to how often they are treated as inherently evil.

Unfortunately, it's happened more than once. I don't know why specifically. Last time I recall it happening I believe it was because I just didn't understand a situation. I was just struggling to be empathetic because IIRC it involved a black woman. I have no idea what that would be like to be a black woman, so I don't act like I do but then I got bitched out. The funny thing is I was talking to privileged white girls. Some which I know for a fact get almost everything paid for.
[–]Afrobean -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I don't know why specifically.
People generally aren't hateful towards straight white males just to be hateful of straight white males. That's one of the largest demographics in the US, it doesn't make a lot of sense to blindly hate them. If you find yourself being hated frequently and those characteristics are brought up, it's probably more to do with you being inconsiderate to the lack of privilege of others or something along those lines. Straight white males have a lot of social advantages in life, so when straight white males ignore those advantages or paint other disadvantaged persons as less disadvantaged than they really are, people may get mad. If a person appears to lack the ability to understand when someone says "this is bad for me", and rather than just accepting the personal story as valid, if that person fought, argued, or was adversarial? That's probably the problem.
[–]EvilPundit 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You're femsplaining. You're denying the lived experience of white males and trying to impose your own ideology on them.
[–]Afrobean 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was just trying to explain the disconnect in a way that I thought they would be able to understand, especially since they expressed a difficulty being able to figure it out. Hatred of white males BECAUSE of being white males usually doesn't exist in a vaccuum, in my experience it exists in response to a personal offense. Like I said before. If a person wants to avoid being hated like that, going out of the way to be a compassionate listener to their legitimate problems rather than being argumentative or combative is a good way to avoid it. As with many problems, just being a decent human being should resolve the problem for them in the future.
You can have whatever "lived experiences" as a white male, that doesn't matter. You just should be careful to not deny the "lived experiences" of others as if your point of view on THEIR life means more than that other person's own point of view. Doing that makes people hate you.

No. This is not "us vs them." That's the whole point of all this.
We are men, women are women--but all people are people. THAT'S what matters.
Judge an individual based on their individual actions, not the actions of people sharing a category with them.
[–]Afrobean -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
This is not "us vs them."
It adds a "us vs them" flavor when you add in the irrelevant anti-feminism in the middle there. It posits feminists as "the enemy", when we actually share a common enemy in persistent sexist social structures. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Other
Once you turn a group of people into the other and vilify them, it's hard to come back from that, even if we could all achieve equality if we could just come together and work as one.
Feminism turned men into the other and vilified them for sixty years.
It's hard to come back from that.

[–]BorisBC -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
So you're working on the fact that women are much more likely to be victims of DV than men? That women earn less than men? That women are much less likely to have access to education in other countries? Or access to planned parenthood options in the US? You know, real, actual oppression.
Or are you going to sit there and keep complaining about some made up bullshit version of oppression that you think is happening to you?
[–]Santaball 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Afrobean -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Feminists aren't oppressing men. All of society does that, but feminists are no more complicit in the oppression of men than you or I are. In fact, feminists I've known have been the least sexist people I've ever known, and generally totally receptive to desires to buck traditional gender expectations even for men. They are not actively campaigning to increase oppression of anyone, they do not speak in favor of oppression of anyone, and if a feminist ever recognizes oppression, they will usually be greatly offended by it. Even if the oppression only hurts men, they will still be offended by it.
Feminists are not some big evil enemy, some faceless cabal of powerful Sith Lords, they're a wildly varied bunch of people from all walks of life that is just interested in helping to STOP gendered oppression. Feminism is NOT anti-man. If you see feminists complaining about the legitimate gendered issues women deal with, and you read that as "they hate men" or "they intend to oppress men even though they're dramatically outnumbered", then I suggest you try a little harder to read, pay attention, and comprehend.

I like this a lot. At the end of the day, the bullshit needs to be dropped and we need to realize that gender doesn't really have any inherent value. There are, and always will be, advantages to being male and to being female, and disadvantages to being either. We should make the most of who we are, but fight injustice where it's wrong.

Careful, the people here will tell you that you are perpetrating a trope and misandry by saying that men should "be tough". You have rights. You don't have to be defined by that stereotype.
Yup. I have rights. When I want to express those rights I do. When I don't I don't. I don't need some sort of movement to help me decide what my place is. I decide what my place is.
To be clear, there's nothing wrong with the content in OP's picture. It's the 'movement' style presentation that's the whiny bitch aspect. It doesn't have anything to do with being tough. Feminism is a movement to tell women who they should be and what their place is and it's despicable. This is the same shit with different colors for men.

I agree with all of this!! You should definitely be proud of who you are and absolutely not apologize for your gender. That's seriously fucked up that anyone would expect you to. Just a gentle reminder that feminists want equality between sexes, not a hiarchy with women on top. I know there's a lot of man-haters and specifically white male haters out there that call themselves feminists but they couldn't be further from them. Real feminists want equality for men too; to be allowed to express their emotions without being demasculinated, to not always be labeled as the abusers (because we all know women can abuse too) etc. I know that with a rediculous amount of imbusels on the internet telling you the opposite, this is what real feminists stand for. They stand beside you, as equals.
[–]EvilPundit 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Ok, but that is what happens when a person is brought up a certain way. I really do believe it has nothing to do with someone's biological sex. I imagine that if a boy and a girl were brought up together and encouraged to do the same things, they would both have as much of a desire to do those things (setting aside what their peers might have to say about it.) It's not inherently a gender-related thing. I understand what you're saying, I get it, but since I've never really cared for social convention it doesn't seem right to me. So sure, I'll agree. A girl who got little kitchen sets and dolls to play with for Christmas instead of her brother's sports bike will probably not be as outdoorsy as him.

[–]dresdonbogart 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
but because being a man is just better regardless of anything else
Care to expand on this? Men aren't born with any value. They have to go out and create it. We do not hold intrinsic value, we are not wanted for who were are, we have to prove ourselves. Women, on the other hand, are born and have the value to be able to carry a kid, and at the very least, have a sexual advantage over men (possessing a vagina).
[–]dresdonbogart 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I agree in aspects, but I think mainly because I am pretty happy with who I am, so completely changing my identity may be a little jarring. I do think that a woman who avoids to the whole victimization prompt that they are given, and one who takes responsibility for their actions can really take advantage of the pros of being female (this is obviously the same case for a male). More and more we see education conforming to provide women with a platform to learn, while the men are suffering. Since "diversity" is heavily emphasized in the US, women now are more likely to grab jobs than males in specific fields (I'm thinking STEM fields). I'm not saying there are only pros being female, but I think the whole "pity me I'm a girl" rant is, in fact, just hurting females and keeping them from achieving.

Hmmm, I'm a woman and have had three children, who I love very much. But.... I hate not being as strong as the men I admire, I hate when people expect me to behave differently than my brothers just because I'm a female, and I seriously HATE my periods.....I feel like I've been kicked in the abdomen, back and hips by some kind of hooved beast on steroids, and my cramps are worse than labour pains:( I go through this misery every three weeks.... I hate that it matters how my hair looks and that people think I look "unkempt" if I show up to work with my hair in an afro...."do something with your hairrrrrrr!".... [–]dresdonbogart 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I am not trying to invalidate your problems whatsoever, just create a platform for further discussion.
I hate not being as strong as the men I admire
I think that this is a huge part in playing into gender inequality. Who says your not as strong as the men you admire? Either you are saying that men are biologically physically stronger and you want that physical strength, then go lift and be stronger than the majority of males, or you are saying that admitting that men are just inherently stronger than women, which is supporting gender inequality.
I hate when people expect me to behave differently than my brothers just because I'm female
I don't really like this victimizing mindset. Are men not expected to be men in groups too? Males are expected to behave just as differently as women. A boy or man wants to hang out or cook with the women? "Man up. We're having beers and watching football, grow some balls." The societal expectations are set in just as much for males as females.
I just.need.a.hug. I just feel so lousy right now:'(
I think that the longing for a women to be physically taken care of is completely reasonable and biological. The issue is that when feminists are going around man-hating, victimizing themselves, and blaming all their problems on men, they act all disappointed when no male figure is in their life.
[–]cauldron_bubble 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
I appreciate your respectful reply.. I am admittedly not as strong as I wish; I struggle with anything over 50lbs. I loved watching strong man competitions when I was a kid and then as a teen....I'm amazed at how much those guys can lift! Re: my brothers and I....I was constantly left out of fun activities and not allowed to wear certain clothes or play with the fun toys when we were little, and I was expected to be more "domestic" than they were. They didn't have to cook ....they still don't have to, (they're both 35 and 40 and still live at home, rent free and aren't expected to cook or clean)....when I was there, I had to "train so that I'd be a dutiful wife because no man wants a woman who can't do these things". I'm not mad anymore; I learned to take care of myself and a household, moved out and made a life for myself. I feel more sorry for my brothers now, because they've essentially had their wings clipped. I didn't mean to sound self-pitying; that goes against the attitude of gratitude thing I practice every day....I'm just not afraid to admit that I admire certain things that are unique to men. Lastly, yeah....I really wish I didn't long for comfort so much, especially around this time of the month....it's no fun at all being confused by my own feelings because Nature dictates that I shed the lining of my uterus every few weeks resulting in hormonal chaos:( I'm sorry that I was so weepy with you last night; I have no idea why I unleashed that side of me onto you (embarrassed giggle). I feel really silly.
Editing to add: I'm in no way a man-hater; quite the contrary. I'm subscribed to this sub because I consider myself to be a men's rights activist and I love the men in my life very much. I don't consider myself to be a victim, rather, a resilient and loving person. There's just too much good in the world to spend so much time spreading hate and passing on negativity to people.

Very elegant and touching reply. I'm glad that you didn't take my reply as hostility or anything of those sorts. Admittedly, I can't speak of any personal experience of women's cycles dictated by Nature, but all too much I see females upset by this and then blame men for something they couldn't help (being born male). I can tell this is not the case for you. Thanks for the well thought-out reply. Cheers.

Feminists aren't against men. Why would you even think that? The only men feminists are against are criminals and assholes, and we should all be against criminals and assholes. In reality, feminists are only interested in changing the sexist social structures that hold us all back, including men. Some feminists are toxic assholes, but I could just as easily point you to toxic assholes in this community as well, so I find it easy to just ignore the few idiots in either case. In general, however, we should be working together as our goals are the same: to eliminate unfair sexism in our society. The only reason I can see for being anti-feminism is if you are in favor of sexism or just a misogynist. Now, that wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people are unironically like that, given the way I see many speak around here, but if that's the case, just be open/honest and admit to it. And why not take your misogynist propaganda to a subreddit that actually IS supposed to be for that. With anti-feminism rhetoric so common here, I'm kind of surprised that that type of misogynist doesn't move on to a subreddit actually dedicated to spreading that kind of propaganda.

The only men feminists are against are criminals and assholes, and we should all be against criminals and assholes.
Funny how they can't even tell them apart from the decent men with their "All men are this...", "All men are that..." rhetoric.
In reality, feminists are only interested in changing the sexist social structures that hold us all back, including men.
Does that also include erasing male victims from statistics (Mary Koss), advocating that school systems change their structures to support girls and leave out boys (whom were also struggling at the time), going after one scientist for wearing a shirt and another one for a joke they took way out of context, The Duluth Model of Domestic Violence, Title IX, #HeforShe, Mansplaining, Manspreading, etc?
Some feminists are toxic assholes, but I could just as easily point you to toxic assholes in this community as well, so I find it easy to just ignore the few idiots in either case.
I see. So you "ignore" the few idiots with powerful positions in government and media instead of speaking out against them. Got it.
The only reason I can see for being anti-feminism is if you are in favor of sexism or just a misogynist.
Translation: If you find fault with my movement, you're a bastard.
Now, that wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people are unironically like that, given the way I see many speak around here, but if that's the case, just be open/honest and admit to it.
How about this:
I'm against feminism as it's practiced now because my own experiences in the past were outright dismissed due to their claim I'm a privileged white male and that none of it compares to what women go through. I'm deadly serious, these feminists said that to me in different forms. Telling me, a survivor of serious abuse from girls along with boys, to get fucked because I dared to tell them that girls have the ability to hurt boys and boys can't do a damn thing about it lest they get fucked by people they trust!
That's why I'm against feminism nowadays. If you can't see the validity in that reason and still want to call me a misogynist or a sexist then I have nothing more to say to you.

Feminists aren't against men
The following quotes are from high profile feminists. They show, beyond a shadow of doubt that feminist are against men:
I feel that ‘man-hating’ is an honourable and viable political act, that the oppressed have a right to class-hatred against the class that is oppressing them.” – Robin Morgan, Ms. Magazine Editor “To call a man an animal is to flatter him; he’s a machine, a walking dildo.” -– Valerie Solanas “I want to see a man beaten to a bloody pulp with a high-heel shoved in his mouth, like an apple in the mouth of a pig.” — Andrea Dworkin “Rape is nothing more or less than a conscious process of intimidation by which all men keep all women in a state of fear” — Susan Brownmiller “The more famous and powerful I get the more power I have to hurt men.” — Sharon Stone “In a patriarchal society, all heterosexual intercourse is rape because women, as a group, are not strong enough to give meaningful consent.” — Catherine MacKinnon “The proportion of men must be reduced to and maintained at approximately 10% of the human race.” — Sally Miller Gearhart “Men who are unjustly accused of rape can sometimes gain from the experience.” – Catherine Comins “All men are rapists and that’s all they are” — Marilyn French “Probably the only place where a man can feel really secure is in a maximum security prison, except for the imminent threat of release.” — Germaine Greer.
“Probably the only place where a man can feel really secure is in a maximum security prison, except for the imminent threat of release.” — Germaine Greer.
Why not Supermax?
What, you mean a top feminist Judy Bindel who called for putting men in camps isn't against men?
How do people post replies like this without actually looking at the sub, surely just the sub front page alone is enough to make people think that maybe people have a point.
That is not true. Feminists are the ones campaing for the laws to be changed regarding due process, they are the ones encouraging us to "listen & believe", they are the ones pushing the false statistics, like 1in4, wage gap myth etc.

Right. Overboard feminists are exactly that - overboard. Maybe we should just push through the bullshit rather than be little bitches making posters. Not that I have anything in particular against arts and crafts...

If anyone wants discussion on real life men's issues instead of pandering image macros that do little more than bash "feminism", the MensLib subreddit is a pretty decent place. I tried to post this before with a link to the sub, but it was removed because the mods here don't allow links to that subreddit even though it does say so on the rules. It's like this sub is designed to be a shit hole.
