Someone pointed out some time ago that this is a perfect example of the centuries old notion that men are the actors and women are the ones acted upon. If it was a male teacher, he would have been the one to pursue the sexual relationship with his female student. Meanwhile, a female teacher is not at fault in the reversed situation because would be assumed that the male student decided to pursue the sexual relationship. It's as if the female never wanted to have a sexual relationship; the male always has to persuade her to.
Men are believed to be the deciders of society, which is largely why this type of double standard exists.
*Edited for clarity.

Biologically, this rings true. It's obviously an oversimplification but this is a basic assumption pf evolutionary biology which successfully explains sexual behavior of all sorts of animals. I think the assumption that male/female sexuality is perfectly symmetrical is just empirically untenable.
[–]JJHall_ID 25 points26 points27 points 11 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
Biologically when animals are acting on instinct, this is completely true. We as humans have evolved to have sentience and intelligence that is used in many cases to override our instincts. Most animals will run from a fire. We purposefully make them, both for utilitarian reasons and for recreational purposes. Instinct tells us to walk away from the edge of a tall structure or cliff. Some humans strap on a parachute or a bungie cord and jump off.
In the majority of the animal kingdom, males are the pursuers in reproductive relationships. Our society still holds that to be the case in practice. Progressive thinkers in Western society are challenging that truth, but many cultures around the world still don't see it that way. Look at the Middle East, or even some of the Asian and Central/South American cultures. If you want closer examples, look at even some of the Bible Belt areas, where daughters are being encouraged to marry their fathers for all intents and purposes as a way to ensure their "purity" until they're married off to their future husband some day.
I look back on my last couple of years in high school when I look at articles like this. There was a substitute teacher that every one of the guys would have given limbs up to have "relations" with, 16 year old me included. She was maybe 22 years old if that, maybe a year or two younger. You bet your ass if it would have happened the boy would have been a legend among peers. Had it been me, would I have been irreparably damaged because of it? I don't think so, but I was always mature for my age. I already had two jobs on top of school and had a pretty firm grasp of how the world worked. Would some of my similar-aged peers have been damaged from it? Absolutely. Would it have been legally wrong for her to engage with any of us? Yup. Would it have been morally wrong? Due to the fact that she was technically in a position of power over us, yes. If that weren't a factor, I would say it would depend on the maturity of the male involved, but how do you really measure that? I still feel to this day I would have been just as responsible as her in that scenario. Some of the other guys I wouldn't say the same. Hell, today 15 years later some of them probably still wouldn't be capable of understanding the situation if they were faced with it. If you reverse the genders of the situation, everything I said would still ring true. There are girls at 16 that would be mature enough to be just as responsible in the matter, and there are some that wouldn't.
In this case the law acted properly so far. I haven't gone out to read the article itself to see if she is actually getting sentenced for it, but I hope that she gets an equal punishment as if the genders were reversed. I have to think that the comments highlighted in the OP are from high-school aged boys. Of course they would all say that. If not, they certainly haven't matured beyond that stage in life.

I'm curious as to what religion encourages the marriage of the fathers.... I have never encountered this in Texas. I haven't lived in ALL the citys and towns... but I have gotten around.

I was speaking, partially tongue-in-cheek, about the purity pledges and purity balls that have been in the news over the last couple of years. These are predominantly in highly-conservative Christian areas. Again I'm being a little bit facetious, but the whole "I promise my virginity to you daddy" concept while exchanging rings in front of a congregation, dressed in clothing appropriate for a bride and groom on their special day just creeps me out a bit.
[–]SageofVictor 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I guess my comment is coming across a toxic even though I don't intend to be. I quite honestly just want to visit a town that has this culture in it since I have lived in highly conservative Christian areas. I want to see what made the areas I lived in seem moderate lol.
It creeps me out too.
[–]Skithiryx 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I believe they were talking about the tradition of father-daughter purity balls. The daughters vow to remain virgins until marriage and the fathers vow to protect them until they are married. I can see the parallels with marriage.
[–]SageofVictor 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I see them too. I still haven't encountered that. Even in the backwoodiest of backwoods, the god-fearingist of god-fearing towns. I'm not... trying to be a dick about his point- but I am legitimately curious.
[–]JJHall_ID 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I've not seen one in person either, only the news articles. A quick Google search does turn up a Facebook group for a purity ball held in Midland, TX. The summary says 2010, but I didn't actually visit the group to see if it is an annual event.

[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't see it as toxic, no worries there. Personally I hope to never see it. I know too many people whose lives have been a living hell due to being told by the religious people in their life that they are evil for being who they are.
I don't want my son or daughters having sex before they're married, or at least mature enough to make responsible decisions and be able to accept the consequences if they choose to engage. I don't work towards that goal by making them promise things they don't even fully understand. I do that by educating them (at an age appropriate level) on the reality of what can happen, both good and bad. I know far too many people that were forced into marriage because their parents hid the truth from them and they had no clue how babies were made even at 15+ years old.
[–]brutay 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Humans, in spite of our large, unusual brains, are still nonetheless animals and we still are subject to the natural laws. When it comes to sex, the stakes are higher for women than men. In extreme situations, pregnancy complications can lead to a woman's death. That is going to leave an indelible mark on the species genome and you ought to expect our evolved nature to reflect it. There will be a differential emotional response to sexual exploitation for as long as there are asymmetrical risks involved... and for awhile after that, because natural selection doesn't act instantaneously.
[–]JJHall_ID 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I agree completely. Despite the fact that we're wired to fill these roles in nature, our society has evolved to negate many of these innate desires. We've evolved as men to not strip down and do a ritual mating dance every time we see an attractive woman, despite our minds seeing her and thinking "Wow, she's hot!" Women have evolved to not seek out a group of males and watch them fight for breeding rights once a month, despite their increased libido and physiological evidence of being fertile. It will take even more time for evolution to remove many of the underlying feelings that are still associated with those behaviors even though the behaviors themselves are no longer a part of our society. In the meantime, we need to consciously recognize each other as equals, with neither gender being the superior.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It will take even more time for evolution to remove many of the underlying feelings that are still associated with those behaviors even though the behaviors themselves are no longer a part of our society.
This isn't how evolution works. Just because some behaviour is no longer advantageous doesn't mean evolution will "remove" it. In order for these vestigial structures of behaviour to go - they need to be selected out, and currently nothing is selecting to remove it.
[–]JJHall_ID 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Over time something may begin to select for it. If people start to choose mates that don't exhibit these behaviors, there is your selection event. Even if that never happens, the rest of the point is still valid: don't act upon those feelings and treat everybody with respect.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
don't act upon those feelings and treat everybody with respect.
Those feelings are the exact reason they are acted upon - an argument for free will doesn't exist in the confines of evolution and in fact is somewhat rooted out by it.

She mentioned the idea, sure, but the name itself has its origin in modern feminist theory. It's called the subject-object dichotomy, and did not originate with her (though gamers seem to have first heard of it via her). The idea, not named as such, probably is indeed an ancient one, recognizable in virtually all human societies.

I'm older and wiser and I think 16 year olds can have consensual sex with adults. It's not a big deal. The trauma -- if there is any -- is a conditioned response to perversely puritanical moral standards.
Also, you are clearly not a gay man.
[+][deleted] 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link
I know many 16 year olds are far from being mature enough to properly handle the effects of sex with someone 8+ years older
What effects are those, exactly?
let alone having sex with someone close to their age (which should be noted is typically legal)
So what at age do you think they should be legally permitted to have sex? 21?
A big part of the issue is the older person preying on the younger one's immaturity and inexperience. It's all well and good for you if you know you were ready for that at that age, but I know very well that many teens aren't, especially with someone in a position of authority over them.
How do you know this very well? This mindset that kids who have consensual sex with someone older should feel traumatized or ashamed of what they've done is precisely why they do feel traumatized and ashamed, which forms the entire content of their negative experience retroactively. And professionals who treat victims of real sexual abuse know this fact very well; law enforcement and the general public do not. If a kid has consensual sex (in his/her own mind), it is we (primarily people like you) who precondition traumatic experiences through moral judgment and paternalism.
[+][deleted] 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
I'm saying that they are generally too immature to deal with the finer points of adult relationships (emotional dependencies, financial strain, geographical mobility (many 16 year olds can't drive or don't have ready access to a vehicle), cohabitation...).
Since when does having sex imply any of this? Are you suggesting every teen who has sex is automatically subject to emotional dependency and the "finer points" of a relationship (whether it's with an adult or not)? Do you even remember high school?
Whether they feel traumatized from the experience is largely independent from whether someone so much older should be allowed to pursue intimacy with them.
I completely agree. Their trauma, if it was consensual, will be a function of the social and legal response to the event, which is completely independent of sex. If the person they were intimate with is defined as having statutorily raped them -- thereby removing the teen's agency -- and put in prison, it would be absurd for you to suggest that this experience itself does not traumatize the purported "victim." They feel ashamed not only for having had sex, but for having been an accessory to putting someone in prison for what they previously knew to have been a consensual act. When they start second guessing this, and convincing themselves they were not an agent, they are experiencing second-hand trauma. This is a conditioned response fabricated by making the "victim" doubt their ability to make reasoned choices and thus doubt how any of the events actually unfolded. This phenomenon is very well known.
I was never suggesting you wanted to blame the "victim" or make them feel shame; I'm suggesting you're oblivious to the factors that make the "victim" feel ashamed and traumatized in the first place from what they considered a consensual event, which is a function of how parents, law enforcement, media -- basically, all of society -- frames the event after the fact.
You still haven't answered this, and since you edited that comment to include the comment I have to wonder about its significance to you. If it was intended as a jab then you can sod off, if not I'd like to know what it's supposed to add to this conversation.
It was largely a joke about how attractive the male teacher was in this scenario, and how any 16-year old gay boy would want to have sex with him. But, since you ask (again), you'd find that many gay men have both earlier and more adventurous sexual experiences from younger ages, and often with older teens or young men. I'm not going to bring up specific examples because I don't want to shock your conscience, but it's not at all unusual.

Unless it's two males, in which case the age of consent is often higher. Case in point, I living in Arkansas, could have been prosecuted for sleeping with my high school boyfriend who was 3 weeks younger than I at the age of 18. But there has yet to be a president set on the higher age of consent for male-male relationships.
[–]smokeybehr 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
13/14 is +4, 15/16 is +10, AoC is 17. Not complicated.
In CA, it's <3 = misdemeanor, >3 = wobbler, and <16 vic/>21 perp = felony.
That's right, 2 minors having intercourse is a misdemeanor. It's not generally prosecuted, but it happens.
[–]konoplya 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]PassifloraCaerulea 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Where to draw the line in the sand is always going to be contentious, but it's nice to know we (I'm also in Colorado) have a fairly permissive age range. And if it's non-consensual, there's always real rape to prosecute under (surely).
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That seems needlessly complicated.
[–]chocoboat 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I disagree, it's completely sensible to have a scale like that. It shouldn't be illegal for a young teenager to have a relationship with someone close to their own age, but you don't want 30 year olds to go around picking up 14 year olds.
I'm a little on the conservative side when it comes to the age ranges but I understand that some people are ok with slightly higher numbers... but "15 up to 25"? Come on now, a 25 year old going out with someone who can't even drive a car yet? That doesn't seem right at all.

yes, it's sarcasm
[–]Phred_Felps 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
I get that reversing the genders is a good way to show how skewed people's opinions are, but I really don't think there should be legal ramifications to sleeping with a 16 year old, regardless of the gender of either side of the situation. Sure, her job should be taken away from her since she's in a position over him as a teacher, but that's as far as anything should go in regards to any teachers sleeping with any students around that 16 and 17 age range.
It's like Dave Chapelle's "how old is 15 really?" bit. At 16, you know if you want to sleep with a 24 year old woman or not. Short of sexual assault, nothing can force that person to have sex with another person.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]blamb211 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's only victim blaming if he "victim" is a woman. If it's a man, then we can't believe a single word he says.
I know I'll be downvoted for this, but I just wanted to provide my opinion.
If the genders were reversed, I, as a feminist, would be just as appalled. Relationships between teenage students and teachers should not happen. Teachers are someone kids look up to, and to then have sex with that really messed with that dynamic.
Lastly, to lump all "feminists" into one category really just polarizes feminists and men's rights activists. I support both movements, but it's disheartening to see people on both sides throwing insults at each other.

My professor does a good job in classes of teaching people this fact. Just yesterday he was talking about it. First he presented it like Person A punches Person B. Does Person B have the right to punch Person A? Everyone but 1 agreed. Then he put it a girl hitting her SO for checking someone out at the mall. Everyone laughed, then he reversed the roles and immediately someone started with the "but", "depends on..." and "but he is stronger so...". Yeah, they didn't have a valid argument.

I seriously HATE the "but he is stronger" argument. I'm a 6'2 265lb guy and pretty fucking strong but that doesn't mean I can't be hurt. Sorry for the rant but this one bothers me to no end. With the way things generally go if I were to ever get physically attacked I pretty much have to decide if I want to get beat up or thrown in jail simply because I'm physically larger and stronger.

The crux of the argument is the double standard and what is considered "acceptable speech". Society as a whole considers it perfectly acceptable to suggest that the boy would have enjoyed such an encounter and you nearly always get comments like the OP suggesting envy of the situation.
Reverse the genders and the standard is completely different. If you suggest the 16 year old girl was anything but a victim, you are a horrible monster. I don't think pointing out the double standard invalidates the opinions expressed in the OP but does call into question why the reverse is suddenly abhorrent. (I will say that promoting violence in either case should be condemned, though)
[–]ITSigno 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I dont really see the problem with the attitude that some guys think "Wow, what a lucky boy",
I'm not sure you read my entire comment. In particular you seem to have missed:
I don't think pointing out the double standard invalidates the opinions expressed in the OP but does call into question why the reverse is suddenly abhorrent.
"Why is it not acceptable to respond like this to a girl in this situation" is a better angle.
You're welcome to try saying she was a lucky girl, she's probably a lesbian, she seduced him, the teacher was hot so who cares, etc... but you're not going find positive reception to those sentiments.
I want to clearly differentiate between the kinds of statements and arguments we see here, how they're perceived, and how I think it's a problem (or not).

This pisses me off only because I think people should be neutral on either side. Girl or guy, the only thing wrong here is potential abuse of a person in a position of authority. The teacher should no longer be able to teach. That's all there is to it. There's no criminal act.
[–]Mansyn 28 points29 points30 points 11 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link
I agree with you, it should be a case by case basis handled with common sense. But there's such a stigma attached to a male teacher in these situations. It's always a mob of people wishing for Bubba to brutally destroy their anuses while in prison and a permanent scarlet letter burned into their foreheads once out. It's difficult not to get spiteful.
This boy is just lucky he didn't get her pregnant, because in that situation he would no longer be treated as a minor and be liable for child support.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Came here to say the same thing. The reason why this is so bad is a young man doesn't have the mental, emotional, and economic wisdom to consent to an adult relationship where a child can be born (aside from bonding with someone in a position of authority). He's a victim because he's not in the position to consent by any reasonable measure to the ramifications of being in an adult relationship.

As a man who's all about mens' rights, I feel like we have to step back and recognize a double standard here. I think one of the biggest issues in our country is men receiving less custody rights and having no say in abortion. He should be held responsible to parent the child the same way the woman is. In a perfect world he should automatically be offered half custody of his own child
[–]xsdc 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Half custody with his rapist?
[–]dejour 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It doesn't impact whether or not it was statutory rape. But many states find that the teenage boy will still owe child support.
[–]tallwheel 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
There should be a limit, though, to what should be handled "case by case" and "with common sense". For instance, the sex of the perpetrator and how attractive they are should not be an issue.
Just an idea, but maybe the sex and appearance of both the perpetrator and victim should be hidden from the public and the jury in rape and other crimes of a sexual nature.
[–]pArbo 16 points17 points18 points 11 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
I agree with you specific to this case. The woman had authority over the boy and couldn't be an effective educator. However it is also true that when the genders are reversed, this becomes a source of such disgust and such outrage as to hardly be believed. It's pretty outrageous that these same people snarking about "the poor boy's plight!! (wink wink wink)" are the same ones who'd get all pitchforks and torches over a 17-year-old girl making her own sexual choices.

Oh, no doubt. I hate that people are like that. In fact, the guys who are pissed off at this kid seem like the exact type of people who would act just as angry if the guy was the older one. They'd call him a pedophile and sexual predator, etc. It's disturbing. First, it's fucked up that people can act like pedophiles go after sexually developed people, and second, it's fucked up that people would absolutely never consider holding the younger female accountable. I'm realizing that a lot lately. I supported feminism a lot, basically the general idea of equality, but almost every situation gives females a benefit by not holding them accountable. Sure, we treat them a bit like objects, but we also put them on pedestals. It's all pretty fucky, but it's incredibly disgusting that men are so often seen as monsters.
[–]yikesmysexlife 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
hey, Feminist here-- I agree with a lot of what's being said ITT. The case should not be looked at differently because the teacher is female or attractive. At best, her behavior was extremely inappropriate and she should lose her job, at worst it was predatory and she should go to prison. I've gotten into a lot of arguments about this case, mostly with 30+ y/o men, common arguments being a) since I've never been a teenage boy myself, I couldn't possibly understand, and b) "maybe if she was 300 lbs it would be rape, but she's hott". (-_-) The problem with the duality of being objectified and being put on a pedestal, is that no matter how high up you place an object, it's an still object. Just to be clear, as a feminist my stance is that women should be held no less accountable for shit like this than their male counterparts, because although we are socialized differently (which needs to, and largely is changing) we are fundamentally no less capable of thriving in a world not softened and dumbed down or painted pink than men are. Sorry, that was a long way of saying your supporting feminism and thinking the sexist reaction to this case are not in conflict. :P
In some respects, 16yo men are less capable of making good decisions than comparably aged women. They're simply less likely to be intimidated but are emotionally more vulnerable. Most women can't sympathize with what it's like to be a man at this age. A close analogy might be to imagine an intense hunger.
In this particular case, the real harm done seems to be his guilt over the impact his actions are having over these women. Giving them a break actually reduces the harm done. Male or female, I'd hate to be in the position of these women, knowing that I'm likely to get a severe punishment just to make someone else think that life is fair.
[–]tallwheel 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's exactly the way feminists should react if they are consistent in their views, but unfortunately all too many of them are not; and are quite happy to not protest against traditional female privileges. For instance, I have never seen equal criminal sentencing for men/women as an issue on any official feminist roster.
[–]yikesmysexlife -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yes every movement has people within it who argue in bad faith. It's a free for all out there, man, life churns out a lot of broken people. To bring them up distracts from actual discussion-- Point out the especially juicy morsels when they happen and move on.
I didn't want to reply to this again, but you're using a common faulty feminist deflection here: that those bad feminists I'm talking about are just a few fringe crazies and they are not worth discussing. I was actually referring to major feminist organizations like NOW and university gender studies departments. These are powerful organizations, and I doubt we'll be seeing them talking about gender sentencing disparity any time soon.

Eh. There are a lot of systemic ways in which women are made to view themselves, and accept being treated as less than a full person, and with less force comes less responsibility (not that I agree, but for that reason I feel relatively forgiving of some of the neurosis Feminism often attracts). If you encounter a situation in which women are being treated preferentially, ask yourself if it is because of a perception that women are lesser and must be protected? Are they being treated like a resource or prize, and not a person? Why do we have regular things and then also special women's things? It is my belief that if we, instead of looking for ways in which women are statistically advantaged, seek to understand why that is... I don't know... I guess that we'd be having a more cohesive, inclusive conversation.
[–]JJHall_ID 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think you and I have pretty similar feelings on feminism. At it's core, I think it does serve to help both genders. Unfortunately it has been hijacked as of late and has changed into a crusade to give women more choices that they traditionally haven't had (good) but without the responsibility that comes with making those choices (bad.) This is one of the reasons I support dropping the term feminism for a gender-neutral term like egalitarianism. Removing the gender from the term would help both sides lose their prejudice from what it is supposed to be and work towards making mutually beneficial changes.
[–]AKnightAlone 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's very true. Sometimes I forget how strong that idea should be. Too many people want to claim support of women. I would honestly probably describe that fervor as a new version of putting women on pedestals.

I agree with feminists: there is a culture where rape is celebrated and victims are blamed. It's just not the one they talk about.
[–]thatguythatdidstuff 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
it is both the one they talk about and the one they don't, our culture has a fucking terrible attitude toward this stuff.
This is so true. I've literally never heard of the rape of a woman being celebrated, but it happens all the time for these teacher/student statutory rapes.
And every single time one of these stories hits the news, there are always comments directly blaming the victim for getting the teacher in trouble. There's definitely some idiotic victim-blaming going on for female victims too, but not for every single rape like it seems to be the case for male victims.
[–]Ihaveanotheridentity 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
This pisses me off to no end. Well, not that bad, but it makes you think. I have a unique situation that might open someone's mind. I'm gay. I was raped by a very attractive man when I was about 14. It's the exact situation. I have bragging rights, he has the jail time. But people were outraged by this, because he was a man. If it had been this woman (who I am NOT attracted to), I believe people would STILL think that I was not a victim.
[–]cunty_mcfuckerson 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm disgusted by the people here that are justifying the situation because he was 16 and not much younger. The point is that she was in a position of power and he was under the age of consent. Period. That is not OK regardless of the gender or sexual preferences of those involved. I'm sorry for you and the things that you went through as a child at 14.
[–]doubledingdong 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Also, that is possibly the most attractive photo of the teacher. I googled her name and she is barely above average in her looks. I'm not saying this because I enjoy being critical of peoples' appearance, but because it is interesting that this particular photo is used in this situation (describing the charges of an alleged rapist).
To me, it almost begs the reader to think "Damn! Lucky kid!" as opposed to something more appropriate.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's a collective attitude like this that keeps male rape from being taken seriously. The same people saying, What's he complaining about? He got laid, didn't he? are probably also the ones complaining when a female rapist doesn't see jail time (or enough jail time).
Sexism more often than not comes from within the gender, and this is no exception, so it's up to men who know better than to perpetuate such an ignorant point of view to educate the others.

In my state, this would not have been rape. Which I agree with. I was having sex at age 16. However, it is a felony for an educator to carry on illicit relationships with students or former students, which I also agree with. She should be in jail, but personally I don't see their age difference factoring much into the conscious decisions of a hormonal teenager. She should have known better, though.

The fact of the matter is that whether the underage person enjoyed the encounter or not, it is illegal. Theres plenty of examples of underage females participating in completely consensual sex with adult males. Those men go to Jail because IT'S AGAINST THE LAW TO FUCK A MINOR REGARDLESS OF SEX.

A teacher at my old high school a few years ago was finally caught having sex with juniors and seniors within the school. All of the football kids for years and years would hook-up with her and no one said a word. She'd also go to Senior Week every year too hook-up with guys. She was caught after pictures were leaked that "may have" shown her in the act. She was never charged with anything because they couldn't prove it was her, but she resigned pretty quickly.
If that was a male teacher the whole state would have launched an investigation on the school and he would be thrown in prison for life.

In fairness, some of these cases are situations where a perfectly fine relationship was happening (as fine as student-teacher relationship can be...just in the sense that the 16/17 year old is realistically old enough to make the decision to sleep with a 23 year old), and either the kid gets mad and tells someone, or someone finds out and reports. Notice that it's statutory rape, not necessarily rape in the traditional sense.

Sorry, her position in power and age difference at the time of the incident should not be taken for something normal.
She already went to college, working probably living by herself, the little bugger may have his mommy on top of everything he does, living with his parents and thinking the biggest responsibility in life is homework.
tell me how people in so different stages of life, independence and "maturity" be ok to date?
by my own experience, so much of age difference affects the younger part of the relationship, you are pulled to be at the same level in life one moment or another.the older person will always be more in power.
she may no be to bossy around a 24+year old man, but imagine what she could do to the 16 year old. groom him for what she wants.

That's right. Go ahead and ignore all the other factors that, WHEN COMBINED WITH HIS COMPROMISED JUDGEMENT, make this case egregious. How's that reducto ad absurdum treating you?
[eta]There comes a point where we, as a society, must by necessity start treating kids as adults because they have to start contributing to fulfilling the demands of themselves and their families. But let us not mistake the fact that we have to treat them as adults with the fact that, in some undeniable biological ways, they are still children.
[–]carchamp1 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Seriously, I've seen people of all ages make the dumbest decisions imaginable. Far, far dumber than having sex with a beautiful woman for crying out loud. Exactly at what age are our brains fully formed enough so we stop doing stupid stuff? 100?
It's sex. He was 16, not 6. Relax. He'll be fine.
[–]Doctor_Loggins -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Having sex with a beautiful woman is not a compromised decision. Having sex with a grown-ass woman in a position of authority who should goddamn know better IS a compromised decision, because of a number of factors. Among those factors are the potential (and probable) financial ruin should she become pregnant. And as to when our brains are fully formed? About 25, according to the latest science. If you'll read my posts elsewhere in the thread, I've said that there comes a point where we have to treat children as legal adults by necessity. That doesn't change the biological fact that a 16-year-old is still in many ways still developing.
The incidence rates of unprotected sex, compromised driving, an delinquency run really high in teenagers. So acting like a teenager and a 25-year-old are on the same level of decision-making is just not supported by the numbers or the science.
[–]carchamp1 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I've said she shouldn't be teaching. I agree, she was wrong. Beyond that I don't know what you want. All I'm saying is HE WILL BE FINE. I believe you're turning him into a "damsel in distress." I'm not going sit here and pretend like he's somehow damaged. It defies common sense.
If he has any negative effect from this at all, it'll be from adults telling him how shitty he should feel about the whole thing.
[–]Doctor_Loggins -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
And I'm saying that you can't know that he'll be fine. I'm saying she put him at risk of being a parent, which puts his financial and emotional health at risk. This is a woman who is supposed to be trustworthy. She's supposed to be in a position of authority over him. She's a representative of the government for shit's sake. And even if THIS kid is fine, by allowing this instance to go unpunished you set the precedent for other teachers to fuck their students. What if the next one has the clap? HIV?
He age, her attractiveness, have no bearing on this whatsoever. She is a teacher. She is entrusted with educating children. She has no fucking place having sex with people who are in her class. She, or any other teacher who has sex with a student in his or her charge, is creating social, emotional, financial, educational, and physical hazards, endangering that child - aged six or sixteen. That should be prosecuted.
[–]carchamp1 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What I was or am able to rationalize is not the same as what is a clear, responsible decision. And when the matter in question is a grown-ass adult, in a position of authority, taking advantage of a student, and when the consequences are up to and including being financially fucked for the next 18 years of your life, yeah, I think it's fair to say his judgment was probably fucking compromised.

There's a reason bosses asking their subordinates for sex is grounds for a lawsuit. There's a reason a therapist fucking their client is grounds for revocation of license. A position of power and trust is something that, as an adult, SHE is responsible for NOT abusing. What he felt about the matter is not the only problem here. The problem is also that she's old enough to fucking know better. You don't think this kid bragging to his friend was a power play? "She is the person in power, but she submits to me sexually." I'm going to go a bit against the grain here:
The chick is hot. No doubt. The sex was in all likelihood consensual. And, the 16 year old is probably not going to be having nightmares about it.
That being said. I don't think that lots of 16 year old girls that have sex with older guys are harmed by it. Lots of 16 year olds are attracted to people older than themselves.
But, all of that doesn't matter. We don't want our teachers having sex with our kids because it can be extremely destructive and anyone that is caught should indeed be punished, regardless of whether or not it was consenual

Which would you choose?:
Women are treated the same as men in these situations and sent to prison and treated as a social pariah.
Men are treated the same as women in these situations and the act is not treated as an actual rape.
[–]WordsNotToLiveBy 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm torn here. I have opinions that fit both sides. I can only say that I skew based on each individual situation, factoring in who was specifically involved.
In some cases, the woman is the predator (especially in cases where the boy is prepubescent) and must be dealt accordingly. In other circumstances the male is mature enough and/or not the prey (and thus the feelings of the comments in the post.)
Allegations of rape is a serious thing, and must be judged on the nuances from case to case. Just blanketly treating all occurrences the same is an emotional and irrational reaction.
even if you swapped the genders the teachers should go to jail... even if it was enjoyable consensual student doing the seduction intercourse... however the male teacher would be called a beast and rapist and damned.. while like always as long as the female teacher is pretty reduced sentences and victim blaming/shaming. if the female student had that heat turned on her there would be outraged feminists stomping about getting tears and spit on everything..... lets not act like feminists but be annoyed all the same.

While this almost certainly didn't traumatize the victim, and while he likely knew what he wanted, a 16 year old certainly doesn't have the maturity to consent with regards to the risk of pregnancy or STDs.

I know a guy who was abused sexually when younger. He's a mess when it comes to interacting socially, and have a number of problems he's been seeing a therapist for. He'd kept the incidents to himself until recently; considering it somehow to be a normal relationship.
All the people who say she's attractive and excuse her for that, are putting themselves in the victim's place and deciding that because they would engage sexually with the abuser, it's acceptable.
The thing is; people who sexually abuse minors do so because they like to have sex with minors, and would not consider the people talking about how lucky the victim is, to be sexually attractive; because those people are not a vulnerable minor.
So someone saying: "it's acceptable because I'd have sex with her", is missing the issue of whether the victim should have had sex with her, because the victim is a minor, and is being preyed upon because of that fact.
It's either wrong to enter into a sexual relationship with underage kids or it's not.
One can argue that boys "of course" want it... but I think that attitude is why it's so easy for women to take advantage of underage teens. Puberty puts sex on the brain, yeah that's true. But isn't that more of a cause for alarm than a "get out of statutory rape free" card?
Honestly, how hard would it be to manipulate someone who is going through sexual development and has yet to mature mentally? Seems like it'd be an easy target to me.
I don't feel any adults should sleep with any underage kids, but that's another topic all together.
Girls tend to be more thoughtful when choosing their partners and base it on emotion. And girls mature faster both physically and mentally. So why we treat them like the one's too stupid to make a sexual decision is beyond me. They at least have reasons other than "SEX, SEX SEEEEEEEEEX" like most boys would.
I don't know. This topic bugs me. Just society further distancing itself from male victims by acting like they're all totally ready and totally want it because of course.
[–]Hydoxis 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Never mind all of the "biological" and "evolutionary" mess IMO. Fact of the matter is that feminists and people of the likes rally for equality among the sexes, and for her to face criminal prosecution for the crime of statutory rape in comparison to that of a man for the same offense is only right. This is what "feminists" have always wanted. Equality wouldn't be truly equal if it were solely for their advantage.
Unless, of course, women start adopting gender roles of the olden days where both men and women knew their places in society based upon their abilities to contribute (with history strongly supporting the fact it is men who have and will always do the most), then perhaps things of this nature can be handled within better reason. But until then, "equality" is all the reason that is needed.

This is not rape.
--Statutory rape is sexual activity in which at least one person is below the age required to legally consent to the behavior.--
So yea, it is rape, statutory rape.
And even if he was the age of consent in whatever area he lives in, most statutory rape laws have a clause that basically says it's illegal for people in positions of authority over the minor to engage in sexual activity together (so teachers can't bang their students, even if they're the age of consent).
I don't care what the law says, it wasn't RAPE. Statutory laws are all different between states. Real rape is the same everywhere.
[–]spongemonster 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Thanks for clarifying. But regardless of varying state laws, I still think statutory rape is rape.
So, agree to disagree.

The teacher is charged and probably will be found guilty (hopefully) these comments are from fellow men that thinks the victims are gay because they speak up and wished they had the that kind of teacher when they were in high school who is helping here the idea that only men can be rapist? This shit makes mad. And adult in general not matter the sex of the perpetrator or victims still is a crime and affects negatively in both cases. She should be punish as hard as a male teacher in the same position would be.
[–]konoplya 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
the kid actually never spoke up. they had a consensual relationship. his ex-gf saw them together it appears and called the cops.

[–]konoplya 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
i was referring to your comment: "fellow men that thinks the victims are gay because they speak up", which is not what happened.
Did you even read the comments on the screenshot? I was based on the comments on this even the person that posted the article in what it seems to be facebook says the victim is gay because who would complaint having a hot teacher having sex with you.
My bad only the other comment say he may be gay the one that posted just complains that poor 16 year old having sex with hot teacher or something like that

Men who think this way are men like my father, my uncle, and every other person I've met who is a complete moron.
Their only idea for the reason of living is sex. My Dad has said to me many times in the past "Son the only reason for living is to have sex." The honest truth is I'm under the impression that he evolved to think this way. I knew two men who never stopped talking about sex, and to be realistic they are the men that most feminists talk about objectifying women. Is there something inherently wrong with them thinking about women like this? I don't think so, because they are a minority. A small segment of the population of men. To be completely honest if most men were like them, I would agree with feminists about men objectifying women, they however are not. They congregate. They are a loud minority. They hang out together, probably for two reasons:
If your only goal in life is sex, you are a pretty boring person.
People hang out with those of like mind.
In one instance I was called gay because I chose against sleeping with a woman. The only explanation is I like penis in their defense I do like penis; my penis.
The greatest irony is that the men who objectify women wish that women would do the same for them. So if a feminist does think a man is objectifying women, and thinks thats somehow a bad thing, jokes on them. Those men wish they were viewed that way. To put it a better way, it would be like me wishing I was viewed as smart, and viewing women as smart, and then having this group of people tell me that I shouldn't do that. How am I to understand anything different? Its the meaning of life as far as I can see it.

To be fair, she was 24 years old, not some creepy 40 year old married teacher who forces students to have sex with her after school.
When I was 17 I dated a 21 year old, the age difference is not that much different here. It's still pretty fucked up, but I don't think she should go to prison considering her age.
[–]CedarWolf 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I respectfully, and adamantly, disagree.
Laws exist for a reason. Perhaps it should be a lesser crime the closer you are to that Age bracket, but that's not the law. If the law was changed so that it was a lesser offense, I'd be fine with it. But rules / society.
Doublestandard here, If a 24yr old man has sex with a 16yr old girl, he's taking advantage of her and raping her. If a 24yr old women has sex with a 16yr old boy(30 counts), the woman is like a goddess and couldn't be more 'thumbs up'. Society is pretty fucked when it comes to that.

That is so fucking gross Seriously as a female planning on having a kid(preferably a boy) this is disgusting. I can't imagine trusting my son into the hands of a teacher and while the poor thing is going through self identification issues getting traumatized like that. He'd end up hating women or being terrified of them. Sex doesn't make you a man. Neither does rape. Military training, university and self discipline does. Girlfriends, video games and that stuff is pointless.
[–]PassifloraCaerulea 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Maybe I'm assuming too much, but please consider being more accepting of other ways of expressing masculinity. The military is not for everyone, and girlfriends are a normal part of growing up. Your kid(s) will be their own people, and if you try to stuff them into your mold of ideal man or woman, they may well resent you for it later.

I mean you have to admit that it's not rape. It may be illegal because he's not 18, but he is having sex with consent. Tell me one straight high school student that wouldn't have lots of sex with their teacher if they could... It's always that the parents find out and freak out and call the cops.
I for one, wish a teacher would've raped me 30 times.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
No, you have to admit that it is statutory rape. and you have to do this for several reasons:
We can't advocate for inequality of the genders. So we have to advocate equally. If we advocate that this isn't rape because she consented, then we have to advocate the same when the genders are reversed. If we do that, then we are perpetuating the rape culture. By agreeing with the feminists that this is rape, we are setting up the entire system for failure later when they come to terms with the idea that women rape men too.
It is statutory rape, the lack of consent is because of a power dynamic, she was the teacher, he was a student. It doesn't matter the gender or if consent was gained, because consent simply can't be given. Period. Until you can define for me on paper, written down, a way to derive if the student consented or not and there was no possible way they were coerced OR rewarded.
[–]konoplya -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
it should not be called "rape" if its consensual. i think the law should be changed for both genders equally to state that.
I can get on board with that.
BUT how do you know it was consensual? Can you write out a rule that says how a third party knows it was consensual and not influenced by the power dynamic? when should we believe a girl? when should we believe a boy?
Sex is so cool and awesome! I love sex! But there are some people that can't have sex with other certain people at certain times. That's just how it works right now. They should have either:
They had options. But sex was more important to them.
[+]ISawJLawsBoobs -24 points-23 points-22 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
So are we pretending we're mad because he was "victimized" here or being pissed because if a 24-year-old male teacher had consensual sex with a 16-year-old student, he'd be dead before he got to prison?
[–]ExplodingHelmet 11 points12 points13 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What are you talking about?
[–]texasjoe 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nobody is pissed off that 24 year old males go to jail if they commit statutory rape. MRAs just want equality, and part of equality being law means equal enforcement of the law, which means societal opinion of shit like this needs to change first.
Imagine if any of these buffoons becomes the arresting cop in a case like this, or the DA who would prosecute the case, or the judge overseeing the fair execution of the trial, or a fucking jury member.
[–]enjoycarrots 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm not overly mad that he was victimized from his perspective, but I do think her actions are extremely unprofessional and worth consequences. And if she's committed statutory rape she should be prosecuted just like anybody else would. She shouldn't get a pass on the law or her serious breach of professional ethics just because she's a "hot teacher" and we assume the boy wanted it.
I am mad that the same people commenting in the image would probably crucify a male teacher with the same headline. It's illustrative of how society views male vs female sexuality.
(As a side note, some of these "hot teacher" scandals have been very abusive and manipulative situations, and we still get the same comments from people who think the student should just be glad he got laid.)
[–]dejour 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Mostly angry with the double standard in public reaction.
Yeah, I don't think that he was badly victimized. I think the teacher should be fired because you don't have sex with students.
Really, I think there should be more leniency for both men and women who have consensual sex with older teens.
[–]ISawJLawsBoobs -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I see from my downvotes that yes, most of us are pretending something bad happened to this boy.
The second one. He bragged about getting laid to his friends, in a situation like this it's clear that he wasn't harmed.
The problem is that if you flip the genders the teacher would be called evil and sick and the victim would be sympathized with... but without flipping them, the teacher is called "hot" and the victim is called "lucky". She will likely receive a minimal sentence, while a male would receive a long prison term.
[+]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman -6 points-5 points-4 points 11 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
Okay. Here's my stance. Women want to highlighy how men and women unfairly hold different power structures in society.
Assuming that that is true, and that it is the power structure of a young versus adult person which is the real harm in these cases, then how in the fuck is a 24 year old woman and a 16 year old boy an abuse of power?
Yes if we reverse the genders its obviously a different reaction, but has it occurred to anyone that that is because as a male, that 16year old boy is less likely to be victimised by power imbalance from a woman?
Shit, I'm with the commenters, I cant see a downside for the lad.
[–]dejour 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
How do male teachers have more power than female teachers?
[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman -2 points-1 points0 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
If, as women like to say, males in general hold more authority and power in society, then a male teacher would hold more authority and power over a female student than a female teacher would have over a male one.
[–]CedarWolf 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't believe that. There have been several studies concerning the way a student's gender impacts their grade and their experience in relation to the gender of their teacher, most of which contradict your comment here.
[–]dejour 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Okay. But in general, MRAs disagree that males hold more power. Or at least, the belief is that males hold more power in some situations and females hold more power in other situations.
So I'll agree that some people think it's a reasonable double standard (because they believe that men hold more power in virtually all situations). I just don't agree with that point of view.
[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I am an MRA, but my position is there is inequality and power imbalances on both sides, and in the case of sexual authority in age differences and in a position of authority, men tend to wield more authority. Thats not to belittle the fact that a male teacher and female student can have the manipulative dynamic against the man, where the women uses sex and the risk of informing to blackmail the man.
I just think that it is honestly intelectually dishonest to simply reverse the genders as if theres not more at play. The boy is 16, which is legal where I'm from and is not exactly a crime in itself. I can support that she violated her authority as a teacher, but dont regard that as a crime, and that dismissal and being on her employment record is sufficient.
[–]tallwheel -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You're not an MRA. You're a feminist. The idea of a power imbalance between the sexes is core to feminism.
[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I sure as shit aint a feminist, and regardless of my position I dont hold to any ideologies can conflict with my own observations, and I can both hold the position that Men also face discrimination and injustice, and yet still acknowledge power imbalance in isolated instances between genders. There is no need to be an idealogue.

"What, I'm being arrested for statutory? But officer, he raped me! That's right, everyone in Jimmy's school, Jimmy is a rapist."
Or maybe you think the F a female teacher gives because you wouldn't put out counts for less against your GPA than a male teacher's F?
[–]carchamp1 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't mind the sex part. To think he was victimized by having sex with her is just plain idiotic. He's 16, not 6.
The problem is that she holds a great deal of authority over him. That's a real problem. She shouldn't be teaching. Punishment beyond that is unnecessary.
[–]Gay_For_Gary_Oldman -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]movingmyeye 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Double standard is what we are mad about. If it is not OK for 24 yr old male teacher to have sex with his 16 yr old student, it should not be OK for a 24yr old female teacher to do it.
Our society worships females. Maybe, men should die out so humanity just goes away.
