There are huge outdated beliefs in rape to this day. There's really nothing to debate with it, we just need far more education on the topic for everyone.

Heck there are ppl out there who claim if you orgasm it cannot be rape at all, that belief is so dangerous and outdated

That's not something you should do for at least two reasons. A topic about women being raped isn't the time to bring up male victims, period (unless someone says something like, "men can't be raped"), and outside of prison, men aren't the majority of rape victims.

That is not the best sample size and it's only one study. Things like this need to be replicable across many studies to really conclude anything definitively. Not to mention, it's also behind a paywall so we can't look at the methodology and results in more detail. We have only the abstract.

But also, yeah, going into a conversation where the topic at hand is rape of women and bringing up men is kinda irrelevant and seems like an attempt to distract from the topic at hand. It comes across insensitive. If it's, instead, a general discussion about rape, that would be different. Your comparison to it being like coming across a group discussing "white victims of police brutality" would only make sense if the majority of rape victims are men, but you didn't prove that.

So what exactly is the claim here? That women minimize male victims? Okay—which women? Because there absolutely are women who do that.

The problem is that you're collapsing very different issues into one. When women call this whataboutism, it's usually because you're bringing up male victims in response to women talking about women being raped, rather than starting a discussion about male victims on its own.

Also, a large portion of male rape victims are victimized in prison. That doesn't make it any less horrific, but prisons are punitive institutions. People who support the current prison system often aren't particularly motivated to care about what happens to prisoners, including sexual assault. It's awful, but it's also a different context than what women are generally talking about.

Beyond that, women are sexually assaulted at much higher rates, and they're still routinely met with victim blaming—what they were wearing, whether they physically responded, whether they fought back, whether they went to the police quickly enough. Those are the issues being discussed.

The biggest problem is that you're equivocating between two different phenomena. The response today is still overwhelmingly, "Yes, but it's men committing the rape." I don't know why you think it's productive to respond to women talking about being raped by redirecting the conversation to male victims. That's like walking into a support group for Black lynching survivors and insisting the discussion include Irish that was also lynched. Both are tragic, but that isn't the conversation people were having.

Women are often raped as part of broader systems of gendered violence, intimidation, and control. Male rape, particularly in prisons, occurs in a very different social context. I'd love to see criminal justice reform and far more attention paid to male victims, but pretending these are identical issues simply isn't accurate.

The second example is really weird. Where are you getting that men are more likely to be raped? At least in the US, it's 10 to 1 in the other direction. Even then, the only thing close to a "whataboutism" when it comes to male rape victims is that the assailants in all rape cases are always overwhelmingly male. "An estimated 91% of victims of rape & sexual assault are female and 9% male. Nearly 99% of perpetrators are male," is the common stat, though obviously men self-report at much lower rates. I don't think I've ever met a woman who thought men and boys being raped was anything but terrible.

In light of this, it's definitely damning that young women don't treat female rape of men seriously, but neither do most men. Male sexual assault is still a joke all over media and in private conversation, and that's the big shitty problem. That's not whataboutism; that's just trying to stay serious instead of scoring gender points.

Your analogy to police brutality is also really odd, because people who recognize racialized police brutality also recognize general police brutality. I really don't know what you're on about, here.

I don’t know how to say this without being insensitive, and I truly do not want to be, but physically how can it be possible that men are the majority of rape victims? I understand that rape is often not about sexual attraction and is instead about power, but the fact that most men are heterosexual and closer in size and strength to other men surely has an impact with male perpetrators. With regard to female perpetrators, I don’t understand how there could be more female perpetrators and male victims than male perpetrators and female victims, because of the difference in strength and in genital structure. I do not mean to imply that it is impossible for a man to be raped, or to be raped by a woman, but I’m having trouble interpreting your numbers.

So the 2019 male cohort was less likely to judge that the victim derived pleasure from it (47.4% in 1984 compared with 5.8% in 2019).

And the 2019 female cohort was more likely to attribute pleasure to the male victim (25% in 2019 compared with 5% in 1984).

The overall rate has gone down. It seems that the cultural attitudes held in 1984 may have been passed down differently to each gender, with the opposing shifts in men and women partially balancing each other out.

I think it's natural for parents to try to teach their gendered beliefs to their opposite sex child in an attempt to help them navigate and understand the behavior of the opposite sex.

Derailing a specific topic about female rape victims is a dick move. Start your own topic about how male victims need more acknowledgment and support, how historical sex offences against boys need to be compensated for, how greater oversight is required within institutions like gaols and how the definitions around sexual assault need modernising. They’re important and need to be spoken about seriously rather than used as a derailment tool.
