This is a bit of a Friday shit post but it’s something that has come on here a lot and I wanted to talk about it. A lot of people on here seem to think that the wedding industry is an example of conspicuous consumption solely driven by Bridezilla types.

“20k for a wedding! That’s crazy! These bitches are out of control!”

Because the only way you can arrive at 20k for a wedding is if the woman NEEDED to have a fairytale princess wedding with $600 centerpieces and $4 invitations, and a $5k dress.

Frankly, this isn’t that case.

On one hand, it is interesting to see pictures from old wedding receptions, in the church basement, or a fire house, with a big tin of meatballs on plastic table cloths. And this was fairly normal for middle class people back in the day. Thing is, a lot of churches and firehalls don’t even offer this space for that purpose anymore. And if you were to pay for the catering, cake, alcohol etc. with separate vendors, you’d still be dropping an easy 5k+ on a wedding reception like that.

Have you ever had the option to pay for open bar at a venue, or go to an event that had open bar and you had to pay a cover? How much did that cost? $30? $50? How much does a three course dinner cost, $50 pre fixe special? $100 at a nicer place?

Take those costs and multiply them by 100-200 people.

How much does it cost to spend 10 minutes with a “photographer” at Sears getting pictures of your kids taken for Christmas cards? Take that 10 minute figure and multiply it 24, for a 4 hour wedding.

“Yeah that makes sense, I’ll just have a wedding at my Aunt Millie’s beach house”

Sure, so you can juggle a dozen vendors, like renting the tables and chairs, 20 lbs of ground beef, a case of hotdogs (oh shit they ran out, isn’t there a Superfresh across town?).

You know why weddings at Aunt Millie’s beach house are so cheap? Because you’ve just outsourced a bunch of free labor to your family and friends.

Now Aunt Millie has to clean her house before and after the wedding. Uncle John and Uncle Tom have to go pick up a bunch of rental tables and chairs. Uncle Tom has to come into town early because he has the truck. Your college buddies get the privilege of coming down a day early to prep food and then can spend the entire reception flipping burgers for you.

Your bridal party can come a day early, spend an extra night in a hotel, so they can help you make those centerpieces with colored sand and $5 Target votives. And spend the afternoon stringing up flowers to Aunt Millie’s bannister.

“Oh I saved so much money! Hey figgy, can you mix up the pink and white flowers a little better?”

Fuck you Jennifer! At that point I’d rather write stuff a $200 check in a greeting card and call it a day. Because you just cost ME time and money.

And look, I’m not saying anybody has to have a wedding at all, much less a big one. I had 50-60 people at my wedding, but we had to FIGHT to keep the guest list that small, and we don’t even have big families. And sometimes, it is kind of awkward running into friends who weren’t invited, because I felt obliged to invite 3 coworkers I don’t even see anymore.

There’s nothing “wrong” with a court house wedding and no reception. But the driving force here isn’t always (or even usually) the romantic aspirations of some Becky. People have family and friends who want attend a wedding. People will be INSULTED in some cases. I didn’t even want a wedding at all, but felt obligated because my father is terminally ill, and it was the last milestone in my life he would get to see (he will never meet his grandchildren through me).

Anyway, I just wanted to say that not everything boils down to the frivolousness of women. And outside looking it, it might look like that, but people who haven’t had to plan this directly and see it rack up should probably avoid jumping to conclusions and assigning blame.
