I'm a little baffled by how many posts on this sub are basically "Do you think this thing that's already happening will happen?"

We've been trending toward more childless marriages for a couple of decades now. That isn't likely to change any time soon.

I think there will be due to a few things

1) cost of living is getting so high a lot can’t afford kids

2) social stigma around it has been going away

3) studies have shown the childless marriages by choice tend to be just as happy and satisfied in their relationships as those couples with kids.

I think we're going to see a disparity of some couples having no kids and others having 3+ kids, but with fewer only having 1 or 2.

Childless marriages are going to skyrocket as people in their 30s and 20s move through their childbearing years. I dont think people are ready for it, or realize whats coming. I dont think its related to politics. Theres a values / priorities shift happening, where people just focus on their own well being, instead of having kids.

Theres little social stigma to not having kids, for people under 50. If anything, having a big family brings more judgement than having no kids. And being a single parent is a death sentence in dating, another social negative towards having kids.

More people know not having kids is an option now. Childless aunts were rare in the past. Today basically everyone has a DINK aunt/uncle, and we can see that they have a really nice life. In the future DINK will just be more and more normalized- everyone will have a DINK sibling, friend, or child. When people see DINK lifestyle, many are drawn to it.

Finally people stay in school longer, work alot, and life just passes by. Once theyre ready to settle down, they just choose not to have kids because theyre already 30.

DINK life is just really, really good- and people are figuring this out.

I have fertility problems and regularly look at fertility related and trying to conceive (people with no fertility problems) subreddits and it's already happening. The one and done subreddit is going to get a major boost of users too.

Fewer people have children the more prosperous a society becomes no matter who is in power. Religion weakens this effect somewhat, but doesn’t eliminate it. So I don’t think more people would be having children even if Democrats had won.

Yes why would women have a child if there’s potential we will die from complications? Many complications result in an abortion, with those being banned we will die. Some won’t want to risk death.

Because of the price hikes on everything, having children is a lot less financially viable now - especially for educated people who have to deal with student loans.

There already are? Look at all of the "DINK" influencers on Instagram. Though, it's not entirely by choice as fertility rates are dropping. That said, I really wish people who have that goal in mind would be honest about it early in the dating phase. As someone who wants kids, I'm sick of being strung along by Peter Pans who are "not sure" or want them "someday, maybe" despite pushing 40.

“People” won’t stop having kids.

Fewer people are having kids, which seems to be mostly correlated with the hopelessness of our current financial situation in the country.

Politics are almost irrelevant; if republicans fix the economy and people can actually buy houses to raise kids in, and teachers are paid enough and the dire effects of climate change were mitigated, people will have more kids.

Blaming politics is silly, both libs and cons would LIKE to grow a family. They just don’t want to raise kids in shitty rent controlled apartments where ramen is a staple.

Well of course. The economy never fully recovered from 2008. We still live in a shitshow and the cost of living isn’t sustainable for most people. A lot of people can’t afford kids. Even with two professional incomes, it’s often easier to have no kids and be financially comfortable than have kids and financially struggle.

Yes, but I don’t think it will have much to do with the sex strike some women are planning.

We are living in a late-stage capitalist society which is experiencing decadence and is saturated with technology. These technologies, their addictive natures, the rise and access of convenience, unhealthy food supply and agricultural practices, evnvironmental degradation, corruption in our institutions, the further financialization of the economy, poor parenting, crises in competence, the crisis in meaning and purpose, increase in vice, and other factors are going to contribute to less people having children for awhile.

Many people (1) don’t want to, (2) aren’t properly incentivized to, (3) increasingly bare a cost for, and (4) aren’t able to provide children with the resources, attention, and guidance they think children will need for a flourishing life.

Nope. Certainly not in some parts of the U.S, especially in middle america. I live in the Midwest and most people here are still getting married and having kids.

Maybe they're having less kids than in the past...but here in bible country you meet your partner no later than in your early twenties, get married, and have kids. It's a status thing.

If you're an unmarried woman without kids (like myself) you are seen as a complete freak show. I'm assuming it's the same for the men around here if they're past a certain age.

Nothing will change because the recent election or backlash from it. Tons of people are already choosing not to have kids.

It's largely an enculturated thing in which politics and material conditions plays a role but only a secondary one. Externalization of the choice not to have kids onto politics or material conditions is avoidance of the main "issue" - which is simply most people would prefer to have an easier life than spend time raising kids, or have lots of anxiety around caring for kids, or are severely delayed in their maturity etc.

~90% of the drop in fertility rate are changes to the psychology of individuals.

I'm in a childfree relationship. I don't know if that will become more normal or not. But it certainly is a new thing in my family. I'm the first woman or man in my family to purposefully not have children in at least 4 generations (as far back as I can look) Including aunts and uncles and great aunts and uncles.

In my opinion there won't be more childless marriages.

The population is going down, so there won't be more marriages.
Number of marriages having children will decline.
Number of marriages with children won't grow, as people will remain single or cohabitate without bothering to formalize it.

I don't think it will stop.... most kids are accidents these days already and I think that will continue. But intentional folks? Who discuss things and plan? And aren't new arrivals from a foreign country stuck under some religion or caste system or governed by their parents/family/community (those folks will keep having kids for another 20 yrs or so)...intentional, free people I think are done with kids.

Yes. The birth rate is already low, and if women cannot receive appropriate care when their life is at risk, they're going to elect to stop putting themselves in the position to be at risk at all.

I had to terminate my first pregnancy because my membranes ruptured at 13 weeks gestation while I was on a walk. The pregnancy was rendered non-viable due to the lack of amniotic fluid (fetal lungs cannot develop properly in the absence of it), I was showing signs of infection, three doctors at my Catholic hospital told me the only reasonable option in my situation was termination, but they could not perform the operation because there was still a fetal heart beat and it was a Catholic hospital. Instead, they transferred my care to a secular hospital where I had the termination.

There are entire states now where the transfer to a secular hospital option just isn't possible-they're all governed by theocracy, not by medicine. Women would have to wait until the fetal heart stopped beating and hope they didn't develop an infection in the interim.

After the termination, I did go on to have successful pregnancies.

Anecdotally, my husband and I were tentatively considering having another child as we really enjoy being parents, and we will not be doing that now.

I think so if people can't afford to live and just surviving I think people aren't going to think about starting families.

I think that's why dating nowadays is very noncommittal. Because it's putting it off until they are in a good place. And a lot of us work and are just surviving.

Also a lot of people are products of parents who felt obligated to be parents. Like it was something they HAD to do. And they struggled through it and may not have treated their kids the best. So if you don't want kids probably shouldn't have them. Or have aspirations that don't involve children probably shouldn't have them.

I personally do not want kids. I like my body as is. I like my career. I like being able to do things. Children are a hard pass for me.
