I detect a shift happening in the modern dating landscape, especially in real-life social settings. (I'm disregarding dating apps which is it's own lopsided microcosm.)

Anyway, at bars, parties, events and clubs, things have changed.

The new dating norm is no longer pursuit, but reciprocity

The traditional model, where men approach, initiate, entertain, and continuously moves things forward, it's eroding fast. In its place is a dynamic that resembles ping-pong: serve and return. One person begins, the other reciprocates. If no one hits the ball back while taking one step forward, the interaction fizzles out.

Crying women on TikTok bemoaning how men no longer approach is the clue.

Lately, we’ve seen a wave of TikTok videos where women, especially attractive, well-dressed ones, they express sadness or confusion: “I went out with my friends, and no guys talked to us. Not one.”

This isn’t some fluke. It’s not because men have vanished. It’s not even that men are disnterested or completely passified. The reason? The rules have changed. These women expected old-world initiative. What they encountered probably were men commenting things in passing, before moving on. These women failed to return the serve. So nothing happened.

They probably didn't even notice they were approached in the first place.

We’re entering a dating climate where:

  • Men might approach briefly, but expect engagement in return
  • If it’s not mutual, they don’t push—they move on and mingle until someone holds them in conversation.
  • Smiles or glances aren’t enough anymore. Both must fuel and escalate the interaction in tandem.

Nobody wants to carry all of this alone anymore.

After years of app exhaustion, rejection, and being the sole drivers of courtship, many men have sub-consciously decided: if it's not mutual, it's not worth it.

Shy men and women both are more and more in the same boat.

  • The passive luxury for shy women being pursued no longer guarantees outcomes.
  • Now, both quiet types have to learn to play their half of it.

This shift, while initially frustrating, could also be an opportunity.

If shy men and women can learn to identify each other at a party, they can play the same game. Maybe more gently and cautiously? But the confident men are done swooping in and paving the way for inexpressive women, and confident women never really did this with shy men, so..

The Manosphere Misread

Some people, especially in the manosphere, they're quick to frame the crying TikTok women as proof that men are quitting dating. That’s a shallow take.

If men were truly quitting, you’d notice a lot fewer men out in these public spaces entirely. You don’t. Bars, festivals, and parties still have plenty of men—they’re just not dancing monkeys for uninterested strangers anymore.

What’s really happened is thus a recalibration.
