Take it from someone who knows quite a few people who work in AI--the robots are not going to take your job. The robots are hundreds of years away from that. The only people who the robots might take their jobs are the (already dwindling number of) factory workers, and coders. And even then, it's overstated. There IS a psychological problem of people being unwilling to take the kind of jobs that are actually hiring (at often quite good wages), but that's another story.

Although, if you're just worried about some kind of post-scarcity, tech-based ennui, maybe, just maybe, The Humanities aren't entirely useless.

Hate to be boring but nothing is really going to happen. If there's a huge underclass of unattractive/unsuccessful men they'll just be thrown in the bin, like what has historically been the case.

You need money to eat right? Well either these men will be on UBI or be stuck in a dead end job making Chad Thaddeus Thundercock the Third rich. They'll just go home (or stay home) with their porn, videogames and netflix. There's not going to be an male rising, never has and never will.

Women with more college degrees will become vastly more employed than men and make more money. Women will simply have to share the more attractive/successful men or be single. But it seems that men are the ones who can't handle being single compared to women. It's too bad, we want them more than they want us.

I've thought a lot about this. In general, my first instinct is not to feel panicked or buy into any level of apocalyptic prognosticating. So far it has all been wrong. See e.g. Steven Pinker's Enlightenment Now. That book really helped me stop worrying about all this shit (and lots of other shit) to the extent I once did. And yet ... it seems difficult to imagine how automation and AI end up not having the effect of making vast numbers of people economically irrelevant and ultimately dependent. Male labor force participation has already declined, which is somewhat obfuscated by the fact that unemployment stats don't take into account people who are not actively looking for work. So I don't think it's wrong to be concerned. Pinker would say that problems are solvable, that we'll muddle through, and that overall conditions will continue to improve for most people. If anything I guess women will probably become more powerful, as the ones who hold the power of reproduction, and that they will do better in whatever economy remains than men will, on average. But that's sheer speculation.

So generally bad stuff. And this isn’t just for men either. A significant gender disparity leads to lasting societal problems irregardless of which way the disparity leans. Too many women, not enough men, encourages males to act like complete shots - violence, alcoholism, abuse. Too man men, not enough women, encourages males to overcompensate and generally do the same things.

The problem is you are negotiating with a collective of maniacs. The moment males can’t get what they want, or don’t have to compete for it, they revert to their base state and begin to fight, feast, fuck, and get fucked up. The 4-Fs. There is a very fine sort of truce now. You work hard, you do these things, then you can do all of that in moderation.

You fuck up that balance, deals off the table, and boy are we gonna have fun! This has been proven time and time again. Be it women’s rights in Russia due to lack of male competition post-WW2, or young male extremism in Islamic countries due to a lack of women.

this is only a problem because of immigration from poor shithole countries to semi-socialist 1st world countries. the native internal population would stabilize based on the number of jobs etc.

fewer jobs, wages go down, people can't afford to have as many kids, population decreases, wages go up, people start having more kids.

but that balanced closed system doesn't work if there's a constant influx of people coming from places that always have a lower standard of living than the 1st world. those people will come in and increase the population even when it's already overpopulated relative to the number of jobs. this drives wages down even further, and without a serious check on immigration, the downward spiral will continue until the 1st world is as shitty as the shithole countries.

in terms of AI, etc. development dollars are focused where they will be most profitable. right now the sweet spot seems to be on things like autonomous vehicles. invest money to build a self driving truck and then you don't need to pay a truck driver. $$$

people say "oh we need immigrants because white people won't pick fruit or scrub toilets" - incorrect. white people won't pick fruit or scrub toilets for less than minimum wage. but immigrants will.

if we stopped all immigration and deported all illegals who are willing to work tough jobs for ridiculously low wages, then the wages for these manual labor jobs would be forced to increase. white people might not want to pick fruit or scrub toilets for minimum wage, but if you increase the wage eventually they will be lining up to do it. but maybe that point isn't until they're getting $40/hr who knows. and that's precisely when AI development shifts focus to replace those jobs. no one is going to invest in the development of AI orange picker robots when it's cheaper to just bring in some mexican semi-slave labor. but if you can't hire anyone to do it for cheap, that makes it worth it to develop a robomexican to pick your fruit.

It's going to be a fascinating century, I agree that access to genetic engineering will be a huge can of worms to open and speciation is probably inevitable.

I also think that the growing understanding that social interventions have a limited ability to change outcomes will lead to lots of illiberal ideas gaining prominence. I predict Nietzsche/master morality makes a comeback. SJ morality will be a flash in the pan, it has no staying power because it's based on false premises.

A bioweapon that wipes out 50% of humanity isn't out of the question. One that targets specific genotypes is also possible and an even scarier proposition.

As for what happens to women, that depends entirely on their class.

As the complexity of the world increases being able to predict the future will also become increasingly difficult so I'm not going to assign particularly high confidence to any of these predictions.

Automation of vehicles is going to cause mega problems. I think something around 30-40% of employment is in driving, and around 80% are men.

When this happens, there will either be a massive change to the economic structure, or massive civil unrest, I suspect:

Some sort of massive male version of 'make-work' government programs, a male equivalent of government bureaucracy jobs (useless jobs that have no to negative productivity but give meaning and money to people)
Some sort of Universal basic income linked with a 'Soma'-esk drug like weed being legalised in order to keep the population happy.
