I first deleted Twitter because it was starting to affect my mental health. There’s a lot of toxic media on that app and it would make me feel resentment towards the world in an unhealthy way.

I then deleted Snapchat and Instagram because I was spending too much time on it.

This was all around August of 2019.

It’s been over a year I’ve been off of social media (besides Reddit)

I thought it was going to be more difficult but it turned out to be really easy. I do not miss it at all. It’s just something less that wasted your time.

I can say it was a lot easier to stay updated with friends but if they’re your true friends, they would text you or call you.

Life has been more enjoyable not having to worry about posting every single thing that happens in your life.

Not to mention the negative effects social media can have on self esteem. We live in a generation where people compare themselves way too often to others and that can make you feel like you’re not where you should be in life.

It also makes people become “fake” because social media is all an act and attempt to outshine everyone else and show off how “great” your life is going even tho in reality it probably isn’t.

Edit: I realized I didn’t relate it to the dating scene.

My opinion on it is you shouldn’t rely on social media to find partners. It’s all fake.

Social media mostly works for good looking people to get dates and slide into DMs. Plus you gotta remember that woman get a whole bunch of validation on there from guys trying to holler.

If you truly want to get a girl (or boy) grow some balls and cold approach. Woman (or men) will respect you more for it and it’ll make you stand out.

I gotta admit social media does make it easier to communicate since most of the young generation uses snap.

Im in my mid 20s and I had my fair share of social media experience so I know all the trends. But like I said it started messing with my mental health and I can genuinely say you’ll be better without it.

If social media doesn’t make you money or isn’t advancing your career, THEN YOU DON’T NEED IT.

yup, deleted about a month ago. i would just scroll mindlessly for hours. I finally realized how i could use that time for so much better. screen time was averaging at about 6-8 hours a day and now it’s at 3 hours. y’all need to start realizing how much social media is consuming our lives, because it’s not gonna get any better from here.

I hid everything on my Facebook account and just use it to chat with friends. I don't use it as an "attention whoring" platform. I don't check what happens on Facebook, only my notifications because there are groups that are important there. I also use Messenger to keep in touch with friends.
I deleted Snapchat and Instagram recently.
I never used Twitter.

On my phone, I only have Messenger and Whatsapp installed. Facebook and Reddit I only check them on my computer.

I don't know if I should get rid of Reddit. I have always liked being in an internet community to share my point of view on multiple subjects and read other point of views. I also managed to get a fluent English thanks to that (I'm Belgian). I find Reddit valuable, even if I'm still spending time here.

Massive difference. I used to drool over all those sexy Instagram models, thinking when will my time come, to be with them. Deleted Instagram for 6 months, before reinstalling it again. Now when I look at these models, they barely catch my attention. I automatically give zero fucks about them, and would think twice if they wanted to be with me now. Basically, it has changed my perspective from idolising beauty to idolising personality. Hot sluts don't intimidate me anymore. Uninstalling it again, just to keep this feeling and mindset with me forever. Acting against this achieved mindset by mindlessly scrolling through instagram again I believe would destroy it.

I did about a week ago! I made my account 4 years ago. I’m beginning to kind of feel antsy and bored without it, though. Part of me feels left out from everything. I’ll pick up my phone and unlock it, and then I’ll stare at the screen for a few seconds before putting it away because I don’t have anything to check anymore. I've never felt like I was missing out on anything. Only once my friend said there was a good climbing community on there which made me think I might get it to log climbing practices. Butt I thought naaahh. It's enough work just scheduling it into my calendar and committing to actually do the work. Adding the flair to Instagram would decrease my motivation to show it off IRL as well

Got married in 2019 and realised my husband used Instagram to connect with his friends but also made ALOT of female friends. Of which there was no filter. It was an addiction to him, on our honeymoon he was glued to it. The last year or so has been an absolute challenge.

Instagram is a tool. Nobody is forcing you to use it of course. On the other hand, because the vast majority is using it (and most girls LOOOOVE it), if you use it correctly, it can become a powerful tool. If you are active and have more than few thousand followers, your profile will stand-out and this gives you social value in the same manner as going into a club and be seen greeting everyone, or in the same manner as wearing stylish clothes. For better or worse, high follower count is recognized as high social value nowadays. Can you be successful in terms of dating/flirting without stylish clothes? Most probably yes, but having them is an additional boost. Same thing with Instagram.

Beyond social value and/or mindless scrolling however, social media facilitate one further need which is "connection". Connection includes instant messaging and staying connected with people you know (getting life updates, etc.). Instant messaging is simple. If you have the app, you can use it to exchange messages. If not, you have to find another way around using another app for example. So, having said app just gives you flexibility. Staying connected is equally important. If I had 2 relatives, one connected with social media and one without, and I saw them few years later, I would immediately be able recognize the one with whom I was connected over, say, Instagram and probably have more things to talk about than the one who was completely off my radar for so long.

In the end, you have to weight the pros and cons of having/maintaining a specific social media profile. If you are going to invest in it and make it a tool to boost your social value, it may be worth it. Otherwise, you have to weight between the communication flexibility it offers vs the burden of mindless scrolling.

I deleted mine after watching the social dilemma on Netflix. I instantly felt all of my insecurities vanish. It honestly felt like a rock had been lifted off of my shoulders. I realise the toxicity of social media the more I stay on it. The most toxic of all is Instagram and Facebook I think. I still use Tiktok, Reddit and Pinterest but those feel like spaces filled with people who understand and where I can truly be myself, so it isn’t toxic at all I think, for me personally. There has to be a reason as to why suicide rates climbed after the introduction of social media. Our phones control our lives and we measure our worth by looking at what other people own or have achieved. It’s so gross. Two months ago I deleted all social media apps off my phone (aside from Reddit as I don’t spend hours on it). I wear an Apple watch and you literally graph the positive change in my stress and heartbeat. I completely forget those even exist until someone brings them up in conversation. I’ve now gotten more accomplished than I have in years due to my lack of doom scrolling. Since I’m so much more calm, I’ve also now as of this month stopped drinking and started meditating. I’ve tried so many other times, but I attribute my ability to pick this up now to my lowered general stress. It’s easier to do it because my stress level is so much lower. Highly recommend it. It’ll improve your love a ton.

What I believe is that you don't need Instagram for connecting with your friends and family, you know the real soul to soul connection.

Instagram is mostly for celebrities and models who have to showcase their work/body/products. If you're a student you don't need Instagram at all.

I remember back in 2017 when I had Instagram that I went with a photographer to gardens and beaches only for uploading it on Instagram.

That was the year of my life that I had more sex, about 12 girls in a year with only 17 years, that Was fucking crazy. But also, the consequences of that were that my principles and family were apart and I didn't give a fuck about the person who I Was talking.

About a month ago, after 2 years without Instagram, I came back and the best trick that I can give you is, use it with moderation: I uninstall it every day from 12 a.m. to 9.a.m. of the next day, and I only use it about 20 minutes.

So, I can only use it 3 hours a day, and I have my relationships more fluid

I didn’t delete it. I “reprogrammed” it.

Went on a purge removing people I didn’t care about.

Then unfollowed anyone who kept putting up posts that I didn’t care about.

I only allow notifications of new messages, turned off EVERYTHING else.

I refuse to post anything but stories. I like that feature: it’s not permanent, no like counters, and any “comments” become direct messages which feels a lot more “social”.

Right now, I can have like 5 stories popped up when I check it, knock through them really fast to see what my close friends are up to. Maybe send them a message and start a conversation. But my feed is empty. Maybe 2 new posts a day. After that, there’s nothing so I get bored and leave the app. It’s great!

I deleted everything and it’s really freed me. Be warned though, women aren’t too keen on this as they believe not having social media means you’re trying to hide something

Been off of it for a couple years, can confirm it's a better way of life.

Also, in terms of dating, I haven't run into many issues without having it. Usually when I meet someone, and we get to that topic I let them know I don't use social media and it turns into a conversation about that topic. I've had girls tell me it's a breath of fresh air etc.

It allowed me to focus more on what I was doing in the moment, and also pick up more books and start reading etc.

Deleted in 2018 and never looked back. Couldn’t be happier away from the endless scrolling and narcissistic rabbit holes I found myself in. My GF now is on it frequently and I can’t help but cringe on what’s on her timeline.

Deleted it about two years ago and don’t regret it at all. Would scroll for hours and just compare yourself to others. Really doesn’t help build confidence or bring about anything positive in my opinion.

Don't do rash things like delete social media. Just don't use it. Use it as a tool of your own disposal. You should see things like social media or anything you're potentially looking to eliminate as "how can I take advantage of this?"

The perfect solution is to delete and stay away from it, but my daily average is 3 mins so I feel like I can control myself - I'm more addictive to Reddit actually but I'm trying to be on a healthy level here as well. Of course, it's very important to understand that these are fake worlds and don't believe what you see. We're all addicted to these bubbles which are separate us to different delutions.

I highly recommend Netflix's new documentary, The social dilemma, where they summed up how these platforms changed our lifes in the last 5-10 years and what consequences we have to face.

I am a photographer and use Instagram to show my work to attract new models, so I don't see myself deleting the app. However, I don't lurk on IG at all. Only to check in on people liking my posts. Deactivated Facebook in June. Do not miss it at all. Was originally going to do a trial run of no FB until after the election, but now I am 100% at peace with it being permanent. I use Twitter as more of a news ticker to get information in real time. Rarely post. That being said, I may be using it much less after the election. I am on it too much. Never got into Snap Chat. Maybe I'm too old.

To play devils advocate, instagram can be useful if used with some discipline imo. I think it was Gary V that said something about social media that changed my perspective on it. He said you should think of it as a sort of resume for your lifestyle. Most people use it mindlessly but if you use to advertise your business, goals, dreams, passions, or some high value lifestyle it can be beneficial for networking and seduction.

I’ve been off of social media for the past 5 months and life has been amazing. I will say that if you quit social media you will have to replace it with real life interactions or a healthy, equivalent spike of dopamine. It’s not as if I’m running to download Instagram every time I’m bored but it’s forced me to find old fashioned ways to enjoy people and life.

A whole lot of mental clutter has been lifted off my shoulders and the initial urge to be social irl jumps up really high. Highly recommend this to anyone who wants to take care of their mental health and be successful in real life... because the internet is simply a mask.

Personally deleted mine. It’s been a little over a week now and I find myself doing more. When I went hiking the other day I never once took out my phone and used my camera for my photos. When I was watching the sunset I just saw dozens of people with their phones out. It made me realize how with platforms such as Instagram people don’t really live in the moment anymore. They just crave validation.

I didn't deleted Instagram, but I only use Instagram for like 15-20 minutes a day. Sometime I don't even use Insta for like 3-4 days.

What I did is that I unfollowed all the irrelevant pages, all the celebrity pages etc., so there is not enough content for me to watch. I only have my close friends on my follwing list and some informational pages like related to programming, this way even if I am scrolling my feed I get some value from that.

And it's not just productivity, there was a time when I tried to get chicks on instagram and it's just a waste of time. Even average girls get unreal amounts of attention and this fucks up the whole dynamic there. The lack of success there can sometimes fuck up your self esteem as it did mine. Thank god I bounced back from it. Nothing beats real life.

I feel like making a guide to insta tbh. I've pulled some of the baddest bitches on there. I'm a good looking guy but I barely have any pics and don't regularly upload.

The key is to have a few good pics but be active in using your story. Post memes and random pics of your life. No flaunting just interesting stuff. Watch women's stories and use it to open them. Don't be a creep and keep it banterful.

If I used it more and put in work I would pull more but its easier getting women on hinge. I just use it as a background app and check it like once or twice a day. Self control is hella key. Small doses. Even too much water kills ya.
