If they are restricted while paying for 24/7 access then their contract becomes invalid. I would sure bring that up to management the first time I was told I couldn't workout. At 60$ a month or 720 a year I would threaten them with legal action.

At my university, as part of our tuition, we all pay a small feel to the athletic department which gives us membership to the school gym.

The student union is trying to make it so at certain time the gym is women only. Even though the entire student body pays the same feel for the same access they union feels it's important to treat one gender better than the other.

The claim is that women feel uncomfortable due to religion or being self conscious.

I'm sorry. I was a fat fuck a few years ago. I hated the gym and felt like a fat fuck when I looked in the mirror. Then I realized to not feel fat I needed to be at the gym more and workout more and not care if people laughed at me. Ended up losing 40lbs.

As a frequent gym visitor (check username), I'd just trespass. I wouldn't give a shit about the women's hour.

If that means they'd kick me out of the gym I would sue them for discriminatory practice, breach of contract and take my business elsewhere. And then I'd run an ad in the newspaper about this practice so they'd lose customers. I'd do the same for the muslims, the retired people, and whatever school class is visiting the gym who I often hear claim private time.

I don't pay money to a private business for them to serve only others for some nonsensical made up bullshit just so that they won't have to see me there. I pay them for what is written in the contract.

If they infringe on that, they are making unilateral decisions about the contract, and that voids it because it is illegal to do so in my country. Also, making this move would void all the contracts with their entire customer base and probably put them out of business as the contracts would have to renew with a clause that tells the customer that they may be barred from the gym at the gym's discretion because other people do not want either their gender, ethnicity or age group around. I can't think of something that would make bigger headlines than that in my country Sweden. The country where the police are not allowed to record the ethnicity of a person due to fear of becoming another Nazi Germany.

I'm okay with it as long as it's done evenly. Like, for every hour the gym is shut down for men, there should be an hour where no woman is allowed in. Not everyone is comfortable working out in a place that may contain sexual tension.

You've posted here, so you're obviously against the ridiculous behavior these women have displayed. Definitely bring it up with management. Based on what you've said (and perhaps some video footage), and with the threat of losing a LOT of business because they'd be breaking contracts with the gym users (if you get word out to protest), a reasonable manager will not change any policy.

If management IS going to bend over for these women, suggest that they find another gym, point them to the local women-only gym a block away, contact the manager of THAT gym (explaining their unreasonable actions) asking for them to receive a discount.

This phenomenon imo is the result of women flattering theirselves.

Gyms typically require membership, as such people are literally paying to be there, taking time out of their schedules to work out.

Chances are men are not looking at you, and to insist as much is vain self-aggrandization.

They can ogle you for free outside, why would they take time out of their workout to look at you on their own time and dollar.

Reminds me of the condo I live in. We have a public swimming pool for our residents and guests. A year or two ago, there was a new rule posted that at 8 or 9PM, for about two hours, women had the pool and men were not allowed in until those hours were up. And this was for two days of week.

The rule was destroyed within two weeks and was no more. My guess is people complained how sexist and retarded that is. Man, those double standards..

My gym had a similar situation: its divided into a strength and conditioning room and a fitness room and you can guess where most of the men vs most of the women are. Originally the strength room had 5 half rack+lifting platform combos but they took one out and put it into the fitness room with a "women only" sign on it.

Which I can understand except that for half the time that restricted platform is sitting there empty while there are tons of guys waiting to use the 4 remaining platforms in the strength room.

It's a business and they'll do it if it looks like it would make a profit but if they see that it might also cost, then they'll think twice about it.

I find that being in a weight room with women puts me in a position where I am expected to work harder to 'show my masculinity'. If a woman were to pick up heavier weights than me, am I then obligated to lift heavier weights as a male? Such is the masculine culture found in gyms. The solution is to follow them up and tell the manager that your husband or son uses the weight room quite often. If they're going to have women-only hours then you expect men-only hours too, or a reduction of men's membership fees prorated to compensate for the time the room is unavailable. Anything less is sexism.

Another option is to make the point Whisper did, that making women only hours is tantamount to white-only hours, and to vote with your wallet that if they enact sexist policies then it's no better than racism and you'll take your business elsewhere.

Case by case basis? Good luck. I run into this all the time at work... But you can see it EVERYWHERE in the news, too. No one credits personal responsibility or consequences anymore , it seems. When someone does something inappropriate or something just goes wrong, we seem to all immediately start thinking about what we can do to make sure it never happens again... To making rules or whatever rather than simply admitting that shit happens, and addressing the specific case. I think it comes down to the mentality that "but somebody has to do something!"

Because it's insane and belittling. At that point, you may or may not be fixing anything, but even if you are, you're doing more harm than good. I mean- if your 8-yo son gets into your wallet/purse and steals $20, do you spank/ground your 10yo kid? No. But that's what they're doing. Punishing all for the sake of the few who screw up.

This sounds like something I would see in the middle east or north africa. (srs) The gym I go has a separated weight room and girls always go in there and lift. I've had a few girls tell me they won't go in there because they feel uncomfortable. I always ask about it and it always turns out they just feel out of place. Instead of dealing with it, I guess the best method is to change the entire business to suit your needs. Ah, America, where the 95% must change for the 5% just so they don't feel self-conscious.

I hate seeing other women do things like that, because it seems to play into the whole "women are weak" stereotype that pretty much all of us women want to see eradicated. It's so pathetic. There is NO GOOD REASON to shy away from men in a weight room just because they're men. Whining that "it isn't fair" and then complaining about it is really lame.Ugh.

I used to work out at a gym on a military base - it was public access but there were always soldiers there. Not even once did I get hit on, ogled, harassed, or otherwise treated crudely by anyone. I was more bothered by the creepy older woman in the change room who would strip naked while talking to you and then find a way to make some sort of comment about her body while doing so. I'm still convinced she had some kind of fetish. lol But seriously, working out with the men was fine.

I hope the "girls only" hours the gym has for the weight room is between the hours 3 am to 6 am. I'm serious. It better not be during peak hours. And they should allow transgendered women during that time too, since they're women as well. No discrimination (except for the bloody obvious, no males allowed).

OP, mind me asking what country you're from? In Ireland men and women happily coexist in the weights room, in fact there are a few woman regulars in my gym who I'd spot on occasion for things like tricep extension (or indeed anything where dropping would be dangerous) - literally never thought anything of it until I saw this specific post. It does have designated men and woman's benches in the weights area (7 and 7) simply because the gym is sometimes absolutely packed, they have little rules like that (also max 2 sets if busy, or you have to take turns letting people use the bench during a rest period etc - I don't actually see that as sexist, it's more because people tend to come in groups to my gym so you could end up with a bug group of lads or women showing up and not moving from the benches for their entire workouts, the half and half rule means "packs" can't hog equipment as easily)
