There was a national uproar in Portugal a couple years ago with a very similar situation, when a barbershop in Lisbon forbade women to go inside, but allowed dogs. Same principle as here. "We want men to be able to talk about anything." Women actually invaded said barbershop and the City Hall received a formal complaint in order to get the barbershop closed.

Honestly I’ve gotten lucky and the couple of barbershops I have gone to have done my hair. I had a pixie fade that was a bit longer in the front, so I could do the typical (small) quif and after trying 10+ salons and getting bowl cuts and shit “fades” at every one of them I gave up and turned to barbers.

Salons cater to long hair, cosmetologists aren’t trained to do short cuts, which for awhile was strictly women, and barbers, which are licensed barbers not cosmetologists totally different schooling, cater to short which are predominantly men. Obviously these spaces will cater to their target clientele. Seeing a resurgence in the number of women getting short cuts and men going long I imagine salons and barbers will see more of the opposite gender going there for their hair needs.

If I need a cut I’ll walk into a barber and ask. At each place I’ve been told (by the older workers, the young crowd doesn’t care) that they “don’t do women’s cuts”. Usually I point out my fade and say does it look like I’ve got a ladies style and it goes well. If they truly insisted they won’t do my fade because I’m a gal, regardless of my shorthair then yeah I’d prob be miffed but I’ll just find a different barber (because why trust your hair with someone who doesn’t want to cut it). Why make a mess of it. Generally the atmosphere loosens up once I’m in the chair and cracking up with everyone there about computers or video games. It’s really only the old men that aren’t as receptive.

I don’t know about this place though. Rejecting gf’s and wives that aren’t there for cuts is one thing and I’m into it. Decrease the clutter of a shop by tossing the extras, but I’d be curious about how they take solo women trying to get their fades done. Wouldn’t something like that open them up for lawsuits? This gal in the article is being an ass. She’s not a customer. She’s taking up space and doesn’t have any services being denied on the basis of her sex, but what if customers that are women? And what of locations that claim exclusivity for women?

I agree with the owner/employee I’ve gone to a hair salon with my gf before and they literally make you sit in a different room by yourself while everyone is getting their “hair did” you know what I did? This actually happened to my girlfriend when I visited her in Leeds, uk. Went to get my haircut and the owner said it’s only men allowed but we can offer you a voucher for a free hot chocolate next door. I felt bad and said we could just leave, but she insisted on sitting with a book while waiting for me.
