For all you people who haven't read the original story, here it is:

This guy had just got off work, after a 12-hour shift on his feet. He's tired, and just wants to get home. Then, this pregnant woman gets on a fully crowded bus, and out of all the people on the bus, she zeroes in on him and starts demanding he give up his seat. He tells her to fuck off. Then, after he refused to give up his seat to this entitled princess, she starts rallying the other passengers to confront this guy, in which some verbally shout at and try to shame him. All he wanted to do was go home after a long day of work, and this entitled cunt gets on the bus and starts harassing him because she's a woman and pregnant, and it doesn't matter what his circumstances are, that seat belongs to her.

I got into an argument a few years ago with an "elderly man" on the tram in Antwerp (Belgium).

He demanded I gave him my seat, which was closest to the exit, because he was "old".

Dude was ripped, sweating and in his running-clothes coming back from the gym. (he also got his gymbag in his hand)

Sure he was little over 65 years old, but he was physically capable of standing during the ride.

I refused to give him my seat and (other older) people started swearing at me for being an inconsidering cunt.

Finally another dude was willing to stop the argument by giving up his seat, which was 2 seats down the aisle.

But the "old man" refused saying it was a matter of principle.

Fun fact: I couldn't take my car that day/week because I had broken my right hand (metacarpale) and was coming back from the hospital when I had to go for a checkup.

In the uk the front seats are kinda politely reserved for pensioners/pregnant/people with disabilities. They used to have signs up saying this but I haven’t been on a bus for years. So they might have taken them down. It’s not a law it’s just politeness to offer the seats if asked. There is no excuse for harassing someone into it though

I was on a pretty crowded bus in San Francisco (the 15Third for those of you from SF). One of its stops is the train terminal on 4th Street. By the time the bus gets to this particular stop, it is usually pretty crowded. Usually, there are quite a few people (office workers) who get on the bus here to ride further downtown to their jobs.

I was originally from a third world country. And I have used public transportation there.

This happens more than you can imagine. They don’t expect a creepy looking hood rat to do it. They only expect college kids and blue collar workers to give up their seats. Not just for pregnant women either. Pretty much all women.

Politeness is most likely the missing ingredient in this scenario, as it is in most public confrontations. I'm inclined to assume that she made her request in an abrupt way and thus he felt obliged/vindicated in saying no to her and then some.

What I would venture to guess NO ONE heard on that bus was, "Excuse me, sir. I'm very sorry to bother you. I know it's a full bus and everyone is cramped, but I would be in your debt if you would be so kind as to let me sit in your seat until my stop at _______" Chances are far greater he says yes, but if he says no, chances are further increased that someone nearby overhears and offers her their seat. Contrary to popular sentiment, people are not (all) beasts, at least in my experience.

I'm reminded of Harry Potter walking up to the Hippogriff in Prisoner of Azkaban. Sorry, first example that comes to mind, but still quite apt lol. He's instructed to bow to the creature and wait for a bow in return before moving closer. The lesson being quite simple: to get respect, show respect. The more you do, the more you allow people an opportunity to do the same and all parties involved get to leave feeling a little bit better about themselves and others. We have to consider their situation first tho and not this mindset. Was the person raped? Unable to access abortions or too scared of getting one? Maybe she’s in an abusive relationship? It could’ve also been just her choice but it could be that she regrets it now (maybe some bad financial choices lead them down over the course of 9 months, maybe she’s now divorced but still has to bear the child)? Significant other abroad, and she couldn’t legally drive? Could be this is her first time and didn’t expect the discomfort of standing up with a 5-9 pound baby weighing you down.

Even if she’s not any of these, she’s entitled, got that haircut. Still be a decent human being and actually alleviate some stress in a person’s life. I keep on seeing people going onto r/wholesomememes or something like that preaching about making others live better while still encouraging things like these.

And this is the post that gets me to unsubscribe from this sub. It isn't newsworthy and giving a seat up for someone who's pregnant is just being a good person. If you are able enough to make way for someone who isn't, their choice or not, then why refuse?
