After high school there are few niche subcultures and even fewer women within them who would be into that "alternative" look in men. I experienced this first hand.

In high school we had our jocks, nerds, punks, hip-hoppers, emos and scene kids. As a teenager if you weren't destined to be a sun-tanned 6'2 quarterback you could still find a aesthetic that not only would distinguish you from the rest, but also accentuate your appeal and strengths because those subcultures offered a different aesthetic where girls very into that specific "Look",

but by the time we were 20 most of the girls grew out of their "rebellious phase" and went from gushing over skinny artsy guys to a general preference for men who either look like military contractors (masculine and bearded) or corporate types (sharply dressed and with a designer stubble)

most of the girls from my high-school who were heavily into the "alternative look" now date the most casual looking men ever.
