Does honest lawyers exist?

I'm currently trying to expand an international business and it's a total pain in the ass. Lawyers dont care about your case. AT ALL. They want to bill you for the most hours possible. And the crazy shit is that when THEY make a mistake they want to charge YOU for them to correct THEIR fuck up. They're leeches.

Yes they’re out there. Mine was uncontested. I did a thorough search of the surrounding area, looked at reviews. Contacted 3 I thought would work. The one I settled with was attentive upfront with cost estimate, had payment plans, and really the process was quite enjoyable to deal with. I did work with his paralegal in his office, but there was no mitigation or any other reason to complicate the situation. But my former spouse and myself had agreed upon everything prior to filling paperwork. So I’d say if you make it easier upfront, it’ll go smoother

I tell people facing divorce (and similar disputes) this all the time. The attorney is there to look out for the ATTORNEY. He/she is there to bill as many hours as possible, they don't care about your welfare.

My idiot sister-in-law borrowed $50,000 to spend on legal fees to get a settlement offer with her ex husband that was almost identical to what he offered her on day # 1.

Unfortunately, my spouse is exactly like her sister.

Yes, my lawyer is great. I feel really lucky to have got him. My lawyer is a small town lawyer and probably depends on his reputation. That being said, a lawyer can only do so much for any case. If clients insist on waging war, lawyers will have to bill a lot of hours to fight the battle.

I had a lot of evidence and spent a lot of time handing my lawyer my case on a silver platter. I sorted through everything and did everything I could to make his job easy. The result? I got custody, house, vehicles, child support, tax returns, and half of all monitary assets.

Very few are honorable. That being said. You get what you pay for. Unfortunately 400 an hour is on the cheaper side nowadays. Make sure you ask him for an itemized bill. If you think he’s cheating or padding the bill. Report them and file a complaint. Divorce attorneys are the bottom of the barrel. In the pecking order of lawyers they are beneath ambulance chasers. They couldn’t cut it as a meaningful attorney. So they went into divorce law

The best advice I can give is be very clear up-front with your lawyer what your objectives are, come well-prepared and have done your research, both on your personal situation, and the likelihood to get your desired outcome.

If you come into their office a blubbering mess, and begging them to help you, they see $$ written all over that. 🤑 Make it clear to them you’re nobody’s fool, and you’re not going to accept them sending you exorbitant bills for just basic process and procedures.

Oh, brother, I have totally lost all respect for lawyers after my divorce. Now I really understand all the lawyer jokes, and even Shakespeare, when he said, "First, we kill all the lawyers."

When someone says they're a family law attorney, I immediately think they're doing it only because the Nazis weren't hiring or they couldn't get a job clubbing baby seals.

Especially when a family with children is being torn apart, how the Hell can someone lie and cheat and destroy a father/child bond, for profit, and sleep at night?

I was shocked when my ex-wife and her mother said (during the divorce) that their attorney was a "wonderful lady" who just wanted the best for our children. Their lawyer suborned perjury, gave my ex absurd expectations and convinced her to litigate, charged 100 hours at $400/per (and some of those hours were simply for picking up the phone or writing an e-mail). THEN, after ALL OF THAT, the lawyer dropped my ex as a client when the money ran out.

So much for being a "wonderful lady".

Once, after a hearing in which the lawyer lied about me, saying I was a terrible father, I had to walk out to the parking lot with my lawyer and the other lawyer. They were friendly and chummy. Yeah, I get it, they have to be professional and polite to each other. But I was quietly raging, about to rip the opposing lawyer's fucking head off. That bitch just accused me of hitting my kids; lying to get an advantage in a custody dispute. And my own lawyer is being friendly?

FUCK THESE PEOPLE. Greedy cowards who profit from destruction.

Is it any wonder there are metal detectors at courthouse entrances? You push some men too far, and you get what you get. Once in a while, I'll see in the news where a family law attorney was murdered. It's surprising that it doesn't happen more often.

Something I realized is that these lawyers have way too many clients. They are damn expensive but that does not automatically translate to better attention span or attention to detail. I stayed on top of everything. I told myself this is the most important project of my life so I better make sure I am totally engaged - reading everything twice, questioning, confirming appointments, etc. Once the lawyer sees you are engaged they up their game too. Not saying this will work every time. Just sharing what I did and I think it mostly worked for me. Its not easy so motivate yourself by thinking about how important this is. All the best mate!

Immediately I want to say no and by that Yellit at the top of my lungs from a cliff. Depending on where you are and what town there may be some, but the reality is this. Most of these family law, lawyers graduate, with the intent of making a difference, however, the day-to-day of this field, naturally erodes their tolerance, and with time the cases that they work, they immediately start to judge you on subtle and minor things. It is if they already seen it all and know how it’s going to play out and thus calculate an outcome for you. Your concerns are of no value to them, they are looking for the week or of the two and will try to close the deal. That is how this works because with a bank on his time. And by that I mean with time you and your ex will have no choice but to get over it. There are no honest lawyers, however, educate yourself as much as you can with your local laws with the way your court handles documentation, you can go pro se, and defend yourself against her lawyer. What you need to do is threaten to make everything public. That way the lawyer will have no choice but to play honest. Put a light on that Person And let them know that it’s going to be blasted all over social media. I’m sorry you’re going through this but, there are no good lawyers unfortunately the system and the scenarios that they deal with on a day-to-day basis, erodes their honesty and the main reason they went into family law and that’s to make a difference. Instead, they are driven by monetary compensation and gains at the behest of you.

Great topic. I'm moving to my 3rd lawyer now actually. My first two have been greedy, uncaring and deceptive. It's very sad but they are mostly self interested and don't give a SHIT about you unless they can bill you and squeeze another $400 out of you.

Lawyers are out to make money, but I do not believe that all of them are inherently bad humans. My first lawyer was garbage and I wasted around $20k on him. My second one was pretty damn good. Sounds like you've either had some really bad luck picking them or you expectations are unreasonable. Perhaps sharing more info about your case and experiences with lawyers would help us to better understand your situation.

im sure there is somewhere.. my ex-wife and i used a mediator. He seemed nice, knowledgeable, all of the above. We just wanted the divorce to be finished. The two of us were very civil. The judge even commented on the fact that we weren't trying to kill each other in the virtual session. We had everything filled out to a T.. Took our documents organize it into the correct format the court would accept. Took our money then disappeared for 2 months. Came back, said he was still working on our documents. fast forward another month or so. Said he has finished the documents.. give him another several thousand dollars. All the while not providing any sort of statement of billable hours that i had asked for several times.

Point is.. maybe

I was very lucky in the lawyer I found. I found that he, during the initial freebie 1 hour consultation, dug into the meat & potatoes of the divorce. That's the financials. He was honest in what my outcomes would be, and he worked with me to keep the costs low.

My ex's lawyer let her rattle on and on about her life's story @ $300/hour and gave her false hopes on what outcomes would be (loads of alimony, full custody, etc).

And in the end, I did really well with my lawyer and the outcome of my divorce. My exwife did very poorly and she spent 2 days non-stop screaming over the outcome.

But yes, there are lawyers out there that have TOO many clients, and do whatever they can to drag out everything in order to maximize billable hours.

I have found them to be greedy. When I talked about uncontested divorce, they seemed to lose interest and handed me off to a paralegal if I wanted to draft any document
