Misogyny: a feeling of hate or dislike towards women, or a feeling that women are not as good as men.

I think the dictionary definition is pretty clear.

the slut shaming from ncount discussions

the idea that women are shallow and are only after money and status

the idea that a woman must be submissive and agreeable

that a woman's value comes from her reproductive possibilities

when anyone says "women are stupid" "women aren't funny" "women are.... (derogatory term)

so basically like 80% of this site

If you wanted the dictionary definition I'm guessing you would've just looked it up yourself.

In my view misogyny encompasses a range of actions, ideas, and behaviors that stem from negative feelings toward women solely for being women. Disliking a woman because she stole your lunch out of the fridge isn't misogynistic. Noticing that your lunch is missing and assuming it's the woman who did it because "women are thieves" would be misogynistic.

It is important to distinguish misogyny from sexism in that the latter, though dangerous in its own way, does not necessarily stem from negative feelings. You can be a well-intentioned (benevolent) sexist. You cannot be a well-intentioned misogynist.

Going by Cambridge's definition:

feelings of hating women, or the belief that men are much better than women

I would also say that things like benevolent sexism fall within the latter part of the definition. It doesn't always have to be hatred, a lot of times it is a patronizing attitude. Like, a guy doesn't hate women, he just thinks women are these relatively dumb, child-like creatures, who need to be led by a man for their own good. I'm sure a lot of those guys don't hate women, but they are being shitty while they think they're being kind. No adult likes being treated like a dumbass just because they happen to have specific genitals.

Benevolent sexism is a thing men experience as well. A guy is being a good parent and takes his kids to the park? Praise from everyone! Pats on the head and many ''Good boy'' comments. Now, the people doing this do mean it in a good way, they're trying to say that this guy is doing a great job. However, praising him for the bare minimum comes off as patronizing. Like men are these incompetent baboons that would probably kill the child by accident, they're so stupid and bad at taking care of kids that doing a normal thing is considered praiseworthy.

I think people just take misogyny to mean blatant hatred and don't consider that they can come off as sexist toward someone (be it a man or a woman) even with the best of intentions. This isn't related to sexism, but I think it's similar: I'm not a native English speaker, but I sound American. And every single time I tell people where I'm from, I get a ''woooooow, your English is so good!'' and while I'm sure people mean it as a compliment, sometimes it does come off as ''wooow, one of you people learned English so well, that's amazing!''.

I watched a television news article about what was termed “Medical Misogyny”. It talked about how a lot of medical research is done only on male patients, because it’s difficult to control for female patients’ hormonal cycles. This can result in women being underdiagnosed or being given treatments that don’t work as well for them because it turns out that women behave differently with some conditions. The first thing that they said was that the word misogyny, in this case, didn’t mean hatred towards women or the belief that women are inferior to men. So why use the word?

Hatred of women because they're women, taking glee in their misfortune.

I didn't really believe in misogyny until I saw the attitude towards women in this sub. The locker room talk in TRP never really struck me as misogyny. Sexist, yes, but reality is sexist. Noticing sex differences and leveraging them in your favor is one thing, enjoying the suffering of women is another.

Misogyny means a hatred of women, but it’s also a term that is being used as a general insult or as ad hominem argument, much like calling a guy an Incel, even though he’s not at all celibate. Just because someone uses the word misogyny, doesn’t mean there was really any hatred of women involved.

Can you give an actual example of someone calling you a misogynist which confused you and give the full context? You're making it sound like it's totally out of the blue and this happens to innocent confused guys everywhere, so at least give us one example that's concrete.

Honestly, I don't think this is a sincere question, if OP is over the age of 12. Is racism, transphobia, homophobia also confusing? If you are constantly being accused of being a racist, misogynist, or homophobe by different unrelated people, you might need to do some self evaluation.

Maybe OP isn't actually "confused" and wants to start the classic PPD circlejerk of disingenuous assholes intentionally misinterpreting an idea and relentlessly attacking the strawman they created.

What I consider misogyny:

Denying that women share basic human characteristics with men, such as the ability to love, the ability to have moral values and make decisions accordingly and live morally, the desire to have autonomy, the desire to be loved and the desire to be respected.
Wanting to limit the freedom of women more than the freedom of men.
Thinking that all women are the same and don't have unique personalities, just like men.
Demanding respect and authority for doing (traditional) male tasks/sacrifices, like providing money for the family or serving in the army, while ignoring (traditional) female tasks/sacrifices like caring for the home and bearing children.

Therefore, in my opinion there is a lot of misogyny going on in the manosphere/red pill communities. A lot of men in these communities claim that women can not really love a men, claim that women love opportunistically and men love altruistically, suggesting men are morally better than women. Also in the manosphere their are multiple persons who don't like the fact that women have certain rights, such as the right to vote or the right to work or the right to choose their husband by themselves or the right to choose to be single. Also the manosphere is full of guys screaming "AWALT" every time they see a woman.

Buzzwords are overused in general. Check out this fun time I'm having getting people to define another word, with some mentions of accusing me of misogyny lmao

Genuinely, in my eyes, it's just a hatred towards women. The best examples of this I could likely give is thinking women deserve "x, y, z" bad things for just existing and when they're used as a scapegoat for personal problems in men's lives.

People have started using it to cope about women's "victim" status when people simply highlight that it's a consequence of their own actions. Of course this doesn't apply to things like r@pe. Acting a d3g3n3rate or dressing a certain way doesn't mean you deserve abuse.

Other than that it's just light stuff like believing women should have absolutely no access to education, labour, ability to leave the home etc. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. Women are better at some things, and men at others. Doesn't mean access should be denied based on that.

I absolutely do agree that it's overused on the most ridiculous things.

I use it when a man clearly hates/strongly dislikes and has no respect for women.

People do throw it around inappropriately but it definitely is applicable.
