Where I work [factory] women are able to refuse the physically hard jobs while men are required to do them. We are paid the exact same rate

[–]gamejunky34 71 points72 points73 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Document the women's refusal to do the work without punishment.

Refuse to do the exact same thing.

Repeat till they fire you.

Profit.

[–]Initiative-Pitiful 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I like the way you think, but their work around it is to say they put people where they feel they'll be most successful.

[–]gamejunky34 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Might as well throw pride to the wind and just say you aren't capable of lifting heavy things. Then they'll have to move you to a more "compatible position" with no lifting.

[–]Acousmetre78 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’ve done this. The women will team up and make a false accusation or suddenly bully you for months and use their boyfriends to threaten you.

[–]Frosty-Gate-8094 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Then they should be paid accordingly as well..

[–]Initiative-Pitiful 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree 1000%

[–]Unnecessary_Timeline 66 points67 points68 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Here's a link to the actual study.

Notable bits from the Results and Discussion sections:

The results show a substantial and clear tendency of men to leave occupations when more women enter (θ = − 2.08, p < 0.001). Combined with the main parameter, this allows to calculate changes in men’s probability to leave their occupation dependent on female inflow. For example, an increase of 10% in the proportion of women moving into an occupation reduces the probability of men to stay by ~12%. Men are approximately only half as likely to stay in an occupation with 75% female inflow compared to 25% female inflow

more male-typed occupations – denoted by a decreased tendency of women to move into, or stay within these occupations – tend to require apprenticeships or higher education degrees, high rates of full-time work, and the use of physical strength.

Female-typed occupations are rather in the public sector, and use fine-motor, and social skills.

The assumption that the model specification is a true representation of the real world is equally questionable. Consequently, the results of the simulation provide an intuition about the effect sizes of the model parameters – in particular in comparison to one another – not an expectation what would happen in the actual world

[–]rabel111 18 points19 points20 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks for the link to the study report. I agree with your summary. Given the assumptions acknowledged in the methods, the results generated by the model are highly uncertain, may not be reliable, and cannot be extrapolated to real world conditions. External validation is only considered in terms of feminist social theory.

The conclusions of the authors are tainted with confirmation bias, and only consider mobility between occupations in terms of stereotyped models of men's behaviour, uninformed by the experiences of men. Results of the modeliing could also be explained by gendered intolerance in workplaces with high proportions of females.

Overall, while the study itself is of fair quality, the interpretation of the results by the authors is fanciful, and their conclusions are not adequately supported.

I have worked in construction for 22 years which is male dominated. About 10 years ago I thought I would try something different so I worked in a care home which is female dominated. The biggest difference I noticed was how toxic it was the women I was working with were the crudest and most disgusting people I have ever worked with. While thay were giving personal care to men in the home washing them and so on some of them would talk about mutilating them while thay were trying to cover them self's up it was the most disgusting environment I have ever worked in. Toxic poison that was what those people were.

[–]NootNootMFer 133 points134 points135 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The first office I ever worked in was 95% women.

  • My first week, I found an entry error from someone. I don't know who made it, but it had to be corrected. When I informed my boss, she started individually calling every person in the office to nastily ask if she was the one responsible. This led to a huge argument. It was an error that could be corrected in 1-2 minutes tops, but they spent an hour fighting about it.

  • I soon learned that I had to play this game of not involving two women who fucking hated each other in the same project. There were cliques and in-groups, rivalries and outright spite among some of them.

  • I was soon made into the workhorse. From the woman who played solitaire all day to the women who chatted by the water cooler, if my break lasted a minute more than the allotted time, I was getting fingers pointed at me because there was always something I had to handle.

My sister, who got me the job, told me that it's pretty common for female-dominated offices. I quit in three months.

[–]WestTulsaBestTulsa 35 points36 points37 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I worked for a company where I had to travel to 3 offices. Houston was all women and one man. There were these two women that hated each other. I had no idea.

I was IT and I needed to fix one of their VOIP phones. I start to ask her and the two go at it, but I didn't realize how serious it was. I am standing there in this awkward position because I still need to fix the phone. So I asked her a question because I had one day there to fix everything.

I get back and my boss asks me what happened. One of them said I took the other one's side. I just asked what the freaking problem with the phone was. So petty.

This reminds me of a quote from an old American sitcom called Married With Children. The quote came from the main male character of the show, named Al Bundy (played by Ed O'Neill):

The quote goes like this:

Don't try to understand women! WOMEN understand WOMEN and they hate each other!

[–]imstuckinacar 61 points62 points63 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I’m a male nurse and the women are always complaining about male patients like they are all perverts because they make one little compliment. Then come to me and bitch about how much they hate each other. If they stopped being at each others throats we could get more work done

[–]Kind_Marzipan_1658 19 points20 points21 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I can relate this also happened at the hospital I worked at. Healthcare is one of the most toxic work environments

[–]sekametelisoppa 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Can confirm! Working at one right now. This place is toxic and sexist against men as fuck. Thank god I’m leaving in 2 months.

I hear you on that one they are really horrible to the point I got bullied out

[–]solar-garlic1776 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As a male patient, I will always ask for a male nurse and doctor. One I'm more comfortable with discussing health concerns with another man and two fuck them. I always get a kick out of telling the female nurse I require a male and the look in their face is priceless.

Pretty sure those creeps weren't actually complemented either. They just like interpreting everything that way and sexualize men to make themselves feel desirable.

To be fair, you picked a terrible career field to go into... There's a reason most High School mean girls go on to become nurses.

[–]Koda1214 74 points75 points76 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It doesn't make it acceptable tho. But what it does do is show is the toxic side of female behaviour. Those women in my opinion were predatory one of the men was 92 a world war 2 veteran who risked his life for people like that to exist and he gets humiliated like that these people are evil and vile.

[–]rationalguyforsure 35 points36 points37 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That mirrors what I saw at a VAMC hospital! A WW2 vet was made fun of by the nurses because he was hung like a horse. That kind of banter would never be tolerated against a female patient.

What kind of stuff did you see happen?

I have heard this. It's a power thing

[–]bottleblank 283 points284 points285 points 3 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

So... wouldn't that essentially put men in the same position women complain about when there's "too many men" and it makes them feel like it's some sort of "boys club"? Seems like that would justify complaining about "female-centric workplaces causing men to feel uncomfortable and excluded".

Goose, gander, etc.

[–]BrokeMacMountain[S] 153 points154 points155 points 3 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Very much so, yes. And in an equal world, this would be acted upon and remedied. sadly, this is not what happens. Men are blamed for leaving because they cant handle the "kind, caring nature" of a femLe dominated work place.

Boys clubs are bad, girls clubs are good. ffs

[–]9pmt1ll1come 113 points114 points115 points 3 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

Kind, caring nature? Lol. More like poisonous, calculating, deceptive environment. The same one snakes thrive in. Women don’t even get along with each other in the workplace. They all trash talk each other behind their backs for the silliest things. I see this day in, day out at the office.

[–]LowAd3406 64 points65 points66 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No shit, I'm not gonna act like guys are saints but I've worked in female dominated departments. The back biting, drama, hypocrisy, and pettiness were extreme.

This divide has been especially stark for me over the course of 30 years working in kitchens. Backnof house is almost always entirely male, front of house is almost entirely female. Guess which group functions as a team with little friction, clearly defined roles, and camaraderie.

There's at least the possibility that it's related to "who serves which customer and gets tips from them" being closer to zero-sum than what the kitchen people are faced with.

[–]MARINE-BOY 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In my experience women thrive on righteous supremacy and so any job no longer becomes about achieving the goal of profit or service but about adhering to workplace rules and regulations. If they can find something in the office rules to use against you they will make it their life’s goal to use it to punish you. I worked in an office with no air conditioning and we had an unusually hot april but it was compulsory shirts and ties for men until June but women could happily have half their tits on show and the female office manager refused to budge on the issue. I had a team of 23 women to manage and it was near impossible because they could just counter anything I did to try and get them to hit mandated targets by claiming some kind of female health issue or accuse me of bullying behaviour. Ironically in the end I stopped caring and started secret sexual relationships with 3 of them and they ended up being the best performers on the team. I’d never ever work in predominantly female work environment when they have been given so many protections and rights that essentially elevate them above men by default.

[–]bucketof68 27 points28 points29 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly! I was a male nurse for many years. The number of toxic work environments that I have been through in a 96% female job field is exhausting.

[–]OzoneLaters 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Things have always been this way... men and women have never mixed well together for work...

The reason why businesses hired all men wasn’t because they were “oppressing” women... it was because they wanted to operate at peak efficiency.

This is why these businesses were able to pay the men who worked there enough to support an entire family...

Once women entered the workplace that efficiency vanished and businesses could no longer afford to pay employees as well as before...

[–]PLSFK0FF 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Damm, that's dropping some truth.

[+]Jeffwins -12 points-11 points-10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, this models the same phenomenon as things like high heels. When women started wearing them, men stopped. Women entering male spaces causes them to leave.

[–]CawlinAlcarz 86 points87 points88 points 3 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I have been in the workforce (US) since 1992. I've spent 23 years of that time working in fortune 500 companies that every single one of you would recognize if I named them.

These are my observations and experiences regarding women in the workplace. I suspect that things are even worse in the UK for these sorts of issues, especially today:

Generally speaking, women can be just as productive as men, but they do not have to be because women are not held to the same behavior and performance standards as men are in corporate environments. Women who inisist they are held to higher standards than men are are either lying, or referring to a time before 1990.

As a man, every woman that joins the department increases the likelihood that the workplace will become hostile or toxic to men.

With every new woman in the department, the likelihood increases that the man will be falsely accused of some sort of sexual harrassment or gender-based discrimination.

The likelihood that the man will be passed over for deserved promotions increases because diversity quotas will favor women being promoted over the man regardless of performance.

The likelihood that the man will wind up with an incompetent and hostile female boss increases due to diversity quotas and the fact that women aren't held to the same performance or behavior standards in the workplace that men are.

The ONLY times I've seen subordinates raise their voices in argument to their bosses were women yelling at their male bosses above them.

I was falsely accused of sexual harrassment by a female supervisor (complaint was not made to HR, but was made to the rest of her team, who all witnessed the supposed event and knew their supervisor's claim was bullshit).

The ONLY people who have stolen credit for my work have been women - the one was my boss - who took the results of some work that I did on my own initiative, presented it to senior management as her own. This resulted in a huge accolades for her and significant changes (increased efficiencies) to the way of working for the entire organization. She didn't tell senior management that I was the one who had these insights and who did the reasearch and made the proposals, but at least she did have the decency to give me a big fat raise.

When a woman's incompetence becomes an issue, she can get away with it by crying.

I have witnessed this firsthand. During an audit, I discovered a female Ph.D. was falsifying data. I knew exactly what she'd done, but could not come out and directly accuse her. I explained the issue to my female boss (the one that I spoke about above who stole credit for my work), and my boss suggested that both she and I interview the female Ph.D. about the issue together (in retrospect, I realize that my female boss did me a HUGE solid there by ensuring that there could be no assertions by the Ph.D. of impropriety if my boss was in the room with me and the other female).

My boss asked me to take the lead in the inquiry but asked me not to make an "interrogation" out of it. So I "interviewed" the Ph.D. about the issue with my female boss right beside me. Despite the Ph.D.'s evasiveness and disdain for me, we eventually got down to brass tacks. The woman had to either assert that the electronic system suddenly malfunctioned ONLY for her data inputs over the span of two whole days (which would have triggered a LENGTHY and resource intensive investigation of the system itself), or that she'd falsified the data.

She began to cry, and I didn't know how to respond to that. I was in my late 20s and this Ph.D. was nearly 40 - it was unnerving to me - there's no CRYING in corporate America!

My boss asked me very nicely if she and the Ph.D. could have the room. I left. A half hour later, the Ph.D. went on her way, and my boss came to me and told me that ordinarily what happened would trigger a significant review whose outcome included possible/likely termination of the Ph.D. and surely at least, a reprimand that would follow her for the rest of her career at this company. My boss thanked me for the thorough audit and complimented me on the expertise I had which made it unlikely that anyone but me would have even found this issue.

She assured me that I'd done nothing wrong in the inquiry, and that she didn't think my line of questioning was too heavy handed or inappropriate, and that she felt I had handled everything perfectly. In the end though, she asked me to rewrite my finding in such a way that it did not specifically condemn the Ph.D. for falsifying data. In short, we let her get away with it.

[–]Big_Passenger_7975 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's a lot of bullshit. Did you leave that shit hole?

[–]CawlinAlcarz 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

All of those observations were compiled from the various companies I've worked for throughout my career. Two of the anecdotes I related (including the one about the crying Ph.D.) were from the same company.

I was making great money at that company and had changed departments and had a new boss, things were going great, I was doing big things and getting noticed by senior management. Fresh on the heels of a particularly big win I had, which I had hoped would result in a promotion and didn't, an even bigger, more well known company began recruiting me.

Because THEY wanted ME and I was in a pretty good spot at my current company, I held all the cards at the negotiating table. Their offer was too low on salary to make me change companies. I told them I wanted $X for a salary, their initial offer was 20% lower than my requirement (it was barely more than I was making at the time). I held out for a month while they kept coming back to me with offers lower than my requirement. Eventually they decided they wanted me badly enough to meet my salary demands.

When I took my new position, I was the 3rd person and only male in a small department. My direct boss was a female and actually got promoted within a couple months of me arriving, and promoted the woman who was my peer to the role of supervising me.

At that point, my new boss was now the one who had been my peer, and she became privvy to the salary that I was actually making. I know that she was unhappy because she wasn't even making as much as I was after her promotion to my supervisor, but hey, that's what happens when you negotiate from a position of strength. Anyway, that new female boss made it her mission to get rid of me and basically rode my ass and subjected me to death by a thousand cuts until I quit and took a consultant position. Fortunately she didn't pull any of the HR/gender games with me... the specifics of the situation would take me another thousand words to describe and would add little value to the discussion...

Not surprising. Rumours about you that you have no defense against quickly spread behind your back. In schools, male teachers hear about themselves that they are called paedophiles behind their back.

My GF was a professor at a college and I was even catching strays from those kids. Evidently I was a Trump loving fascist which is hilarious because I've literally never voted for a Republican in my life and one of my conservative friends described me as "a couple shades of black away from Antifa"

I saw this reported in a national newspaper called 'metro. but they didnt have the story on their website. This was the only website i could find with this story, but it is the same report.

Has anyone here experienced this?

Where i worked a few years ago, we had a new female general manager come in, who then appointed a female assistant gm, and promoted women over men to higher positions, despite having less experience. I noticed when we had meetings, or were in the office that the women would 'huddle' together discussing topics that i and other men were never a part of. We were excluded a lot, and when we were allowed in on the conversations, they would often be about sex, or dildos etc. Any dirty or hard work, such as manual labour was always handed to men, while the easier cleaner roles were given to the women.

So, has anyone else experienced this as well? Are men leaving female dominated work places because we are being excluded?

[–]Ok_Change_1063 33 points34 points35 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women whine about “old boys clubs” because that’s how they actually operate and they ignorantly assume men do too. Except we don’t. It’s pure projection.

Ask a male nurse in America what it’s like, they generally hate it. Some of the worst offenses against privacy that I saw were committed by female nurses against male patients. Inappropriate behavior or discussions about a female patient were absolutely verboten (it’s a girls’ club), but male patients could expect to be talked about and even rarely photographed. If you are anatomically “interesting,”, you will attract a discussion after you’re put to sleep. Male healthcare providers who make inappropriate comments about females are chastened very quickly. Very few males are anywhere near a labor and delivery suite these days. But if you need urological care, count on there being a bunch of females taking care of you and your privacy meaning absolutely nothing to them.

I used to work at a pretty shitty job as a student.

It included deliveries in early morning hours, with shitty pay, outside, on a bike.

It sucked, but at least I had a good work relationship with my boss. I would take extra work when I could, and he would also give me a day off without any issues whatsoever as a result.

Then my boss quit the job, and a woman took over his role.

That same year, I asked for one single day off for Christmas morning, with time well in advance.

She declined my request immediately, saying 'not everyone can have a day off and it's hard to find replacemens', so I sent my two weeks notice immediately after that. I ended up having vacation all Christmas and New Year's after quitting. she was forced to find a replacement for many more days and holidays.

My sister worked as a waitress at a restaurant that spun out of control like this. They were short staffed, so required everyone to work more hours. People with conflicting commitments like college classes, couldn't accept these extra shifts, so they quit. Management put more pressure on those left, causing more to quit.

At my old student job my boss would try and bully people into taking classes that help her make a schedule since she tried to run the whole thing with 3 part timers people (+ herself).

Keeping in mind it was min wage, no benefits. When min wage was increased they tried to claim they were giving me a raise.

I left when she tried to get me to arrive earlier. My class finishes at 3PM and it's an hour away on average. I can't make it into work at 3PM. She tried to bully me to drop the class / change it to another day but I refused and quit. Now she was extremely stuck, all because she tried to keep minimal staff and bully that staff into giving her what she wants for shifts.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It goes the other way too. One job I had in high school they tried to keep so many people on the roster that I hardly got any hours. So I got a 2nd job. Then the scheduling manager got mad that I had less availability. Haha.

I did. It was a long time ago, where I worked as a consultant for a big company, That department was 100% women, about 25-30 of them.

They couldn't hide their mutual resentment even in front of us, who were external to the company. The level of jockeying for the "favorite" position, comparisons - who has a lower-ID number (came earlier to the company), ass-kissing and bowel-crawling was insane.

Our own female colleagues commented, at the time, that they are lucky to work in a mixed environment, being treated as equals, and don't have to be a part of that hen-house.

Briefly worked as the only man in a small company. The owner harassed me to tell her what my sexuality was in front of the whole office, then once she found out I liked guys a few days later she asked to borrow my personal phone and take it down the road “to call her phone which she had lost in the car park”. I said no. A few days later she said to stop coming in as I was a “bad culture fit” for them. I earn twice as much now doing a similar job for a much better and less toxic company.

Worked in a woman dominated space for a long time. It was exactly like a girls club, and they said and did some really inappropriate things for a workplace. Things that would never be allowed if men did them and there was anything resembling an HR department.

What kinds of things did they do… you know for science!

[–]Wafflefanny 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Shoot dang so many things. Some stuff that still sticks with me years later.

  1. Only hiring women (we hired about 10 people over the 5 heads I was there.. I was an emergency hire and only two men applied in the short window). Specifically only women that matched the political stance of my boss.

  2. Would frequently disparage the aptitude of male colleagues from other organizations In staff meetings, someone would make a shitty remark about their husband or someone in particular and then it would just devolve into man bashing.

  3. My boss told me she was worried about pairing me with another man for a project because she feared we would make "man-brain decisions"

  4. I once to complained to my boss that one of the new hires was saying things that felt very hostile towards me. The quote that stands out was "I believe women should have some time for retribution against men". She was specifically saying that as a society we should perpetrate all of them perceived ills that women have had to suffer over the years on two men now as punishment for the crimes of older generations. My boss basically dismissed my complaint and told me "it's something I would have said when I was young"

  5. Myself and a part-time maintenance guy were the only two males on staff and whenever any task that was even remotely dirty, dangerous, or required physical labor of any kind it was somehow always delegated to me and him.

  6. On one of my last days there after I had given my two weeks notice after about 5 years of diligent service My boss told me "most men suck but I think you'd make a great father".

Sorry for any mistakes I'm on mobile.

[–]Scandi_Navy 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes. Funny thing though, my boss at the time noticed this as well. In terms of some of the most skilled workers being skipped for promotions over less competent people. For a variety of reasons related to female managers and their misjudging male competency hierarchy. In short, they were promoting based on presentation and elbow rubbing etc. Which was costing us talent that walked away.

We had a closed meeting and came up with something. We opened the factory doors an hour earlier, and an hour longer, providing flexible start times. By opening an hour before daycare and preschool opened, most men showed up early, and women stayed later.

I'll let y'all do the math on how that fixed the work dynamics.

[–]BCRE8TVE 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I work with mostly women. 2/3 of them are wonderful stable adults and I wouldn’t mind working with them. The other 1/3 are motional and irrational. For example this woman gets mad that a man asked me for help when she was clearly busy and he just didn’t want to bother her. She said it was sexist. Then she is rude to people and the next minute she is so nice. Then they put me in the middle because I am a man and they hate the women in the other department. The tension is annoying. It’s goofy shit! I dream of working with men again. Thank god I am gay and I go home to a man. Y’all it’s a blessing to live with a man. House looks a bit messy, but it doesn’t bother us. Everyone always says I look young. I think it’s because I don’t have someone nagging me at home. Before anyone goes crazy on me lesbians get away with saying worse things about men and no one cares. Why can’t gay men be the same?

It's going to be a different world when bottom trans surgery becomes as good as/better than the real thing, and that it will be more acceptable to be with trans women. Beautiful body with a male-like mindset? They'll be worth their weight in gold.

That and more traditional women, just a shame that "traditional" masculinity still sees men as expendable and providers, but at least they're being actually appreciated and rewarded for it, instead of the left just taking it all for granted.

[–]supersaiyaninfinite 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]BCRE8TVE 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm a romantic at heart and I'm still kind of hoping for and holding out for the blue-pill ideal, but if I can't find women who are like that then I would gladly turn to attractive trans women with bottom surgery. I'd love to have the attractive female package without having to deal with the female insanity.

If anyone says this is sexist, then I'm sure we'd have no problem calling out women as sexist who say they'd prefer trans men with bottom surgery as well, but we both know there's not a chance in hell of that happening.

in my experience - men like it cooler in the workplace - women like it warmer. when there's more women in the workplace - it tends to be too fucking hot to work.

its also my experience - women prefer to wear less clothing, the more women present - the less clothing they will want to wear - and why not make it a tad warmer.

perhaps - its not the cattiness or the constant having to hear the low key casual misandry. Its the absurd amount of gossip in a fucking sweltering hot office.

Ah yes but don't you see, that's because AC is sexist so you gotta pump up the thermometer to combat the patriarchy.

[–]SD_TMI 34 points35 points36 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think that one aspect is that working in a unbalanced environment changes the culture and with how women are encouraged to pull abuse (false sexual advance/harassment claims)
it becomes dangerous to work there unless you're openly homosexual.

I've seen and have heard these discussions where it's brought up that HR will take such claims automatically as the mans fault and automatically guilty if someone says "they make me feel uncomfortable".

I've seen a man get forced out of his position and eventually fired due to a compltely unsubstantiated claim of "uncomfortable" in the workplace. That's the environment that men are being forced to work in... and all it takes is someone to say that to end a career and be forced to look for new work.

[–]chortle-guffaw 34 points35 points36 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Many female coworkers have said that they hate working with a lot of other women, and especially hate women bosses. This is always unsolicited information, or in response to something said or done.

I've never heard this from a man. That doesn't mean they're not thinking it, just that they're not verbalizing it.

[–]javerthugo 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Motalo 48 points49 points50 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think that's the whole story at all. If an office workforce reaches 75% female, that's a 3:1 female/male ratio. That's very unbalanced. I think that means the bosses and HR doing the hiring are biased against men, and thus the workspace in hostile for male workers.

On my dept we have 4 women and 20 men. 3 out of the 4 women are late every single day. We have 1-2 guys late every day. Every single day the same individuals come into our daily meeting with the same excuses. I’m not a manager so I’m not privy to performance review data but I would not be surprised if the women score the lowest in terms of productivity. Obviously, they would never disclose that. Worst is, it’s technically impossible to fire women or else our dept is sexist.

[–]LowAd3406 24 points25 points26 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We would manually forward emails when people were out at my last job so we always knew who called out. There was this one woman who called out 3–5 times a month so she was missing 40–60 days a year. We were completely flabbergasted when she not only got promoted, but she got promoted to VP! You could tell people in her department were pissed because within a couple of months half of them found new jobs.

[–]knight_call1986 21 points22 points23 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I remember working as the sole male in a certain department. It was awful. They were always finding ways to argue or throw shade at each other. They would try to get me in the middle of it, when I would just say something like "this is work, if yall can't work together during our shifts then find a new job. I shouldn't have to deal with yalls inability to work together. So get it together or keep it moving".

I was in a very bad place at the time, so my filter was non existent. Funny enough is that a woman told me it was way worse before I worked there and she figured they put me in that department because they felt my presence may cause them to chill out a bit.

Also working in that department was the first time I experienced blatant racism and sexual harassment. I've had some of the women grab my ass, arms, touch my chest (I was lifting a lot then), and making ridiculous comments to me trying to go out and what not. Some even showed up to my place unannounced (it was a small town).

I think the biggest thing I noticed was that there is this weird competitiveness amongst women that causes them to just take jabs at each other. I've seen it with women family members, friends and in between. It is interesting because In reality guys can make jokes with each other and still be boys afterwards. Also we have no problem not hanging with someone we don't like. Whereas a lot of women I noticed will not like another woman and still hang around them. Its weird. But yeah I working in a department that was all women and it was definitely not a good time. There was always something happening each day.

[–]9pmt1ll1come 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Women live or die by their social circle. It’s wired in them as part of their survival. They cannot survive without social interactions because their very existence is reliant on it. This is why they will hang out with people they don’t like and obviously that leads to deception. Men aren’t wired the same way. We don’t need social interactions to the same extent they do and as a result, we don’t get the same amount of stimuli from these interactions as women do. This makes males interactions more sincere for the most part.

[–]BCRE8TVE 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Also male social interaction relies a lot on insulting one another when we don't really mean it, and showing affection that way, whereas it seems female socialization relies on making compliments when they don't really mean it. I can understand it because white lies are the social lubricant that makes social interactions go smoother, but it kind of leads to a toxic backstabbing the individual to maintain social supremacy in the group.

So yeah, seems fake positivity is a hell of a lot more toxic than fake negativity.

[–]9pmt1ll1come 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Great point. I think human attention inherently plays a role into this. Women on average receive considerably more attention than men in general. Consequently, they understand (even if subconsciously) how important that is to building relationships. So they will give others compliments for the simple fact of building relationships to further increase their social circle even if they don’t actually need that person (which for females this is often other non-family females).

Also, women interpret lies different than men. Men’s interpretations of a lie is pretty black and white. Women’s interpretations of a lie are a lot more nuanced because that is often based on how they feel about something rather than objective truth.

[–]BCRE8TVE 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's a good point yeah, giving compliments freely to build social connection bridges, but to other women rather than to men since they already get plenty of attention from men and don't want more unwanted romantic attention.

I hear you about women and lies, and I'll add even more complexity because the lie depends not only on how they feel about it and what effect the lie has on them, but also the effect the lie has on other people as well. Guys generally don't like lies because lies lead to unreliable data. I suspect that plays a big part in where someone falls on the "feels vs reals" spectrum. Do you need the information to actually do something with it, or are you giving false information for social purposes (white lies).

Stole credit for my work, one tried to make it seem like I was harassing her (verbal) of what I still don’t know, my work ethic was questioned against a support person who spent the day on Facebook; she triumphed, and the list goes on. -during university worked at a food processing plant on the evening shift. The day shift was primarily older post menopausal females who spent the majority of the day in the washroom for female hygiene reasons. The guys had to wait for lunch and coffee breaks, which was fine with us. Our evening shift was 1/3 the number of people yet we produced 3 times the product as the day shift. We were the bad guys for over producing. -ran a small business for a while. The bank across the street was impossible to deal with if the staff were all female. All it took was one male and things ran like clock work. -at one office was returning to work from a back injury and written up for not shovelling snow from the side walk. There were six healthy females who were not expected to shovel, just me, the only male return from back surgery. -and the list goes on……..

There’s only 1 issue I have with diversity in jobs it’s that they are hiring some people more for their race or gender to be more “inclusive” and some people are dismissed because of their race or gender. I think the best way to go with diversity is to just throw race and gender out of the window and accept people for who they are as a person and their experience. Since diversity was created on the basis that some people aren’t hired because of their gender or race and some work forces are “male dominated”

Simulation studies using British workforce data ...

More detail here. Way beyond my stats understanding, but I think it's a computer simulation based on the workforce data rather than, for example, a simulation involving human participants.

“Nurse as an occupation tends to be described with stereotypically female attributes, such as social and caring. If the majority of nurses were men, we might use entirely different words to describe the occupation, for example, requiring authority or being physically demanding.”

Not in my social circle, and I'm sure not in the social circle of Prof Dr Per Block of the University of Zurich. It would get very chilly indeed if, for example, if I described any nurses I know as being caring or nurturing (despite that word's etymological connection with nurse), or suggested that the nursing profession was a good fit for women with those qualities. The accepted way of speaking about nurses in my social circle is along the lines of - she's a tough cookie, she's not queasy about blood, she deals with the reality of death every day. I could turn a crank on any of my dinner party acquaintances and get a lecture about how nurses are no longer the Florence Nightingale figures who mop brows and soothe nightmares, and in fact they never were, that actually Florence Nightingale was a supremely forceful leader and administrator. I guess that's an anti-stereotype, where respectable middle class people are aware of the stereotype and are overcompensating.

Ive heard and read that men dont like working with women because they make their life a living hell.

[–]Your_Agenda_Sucks 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Women do not work.

They stand around complaining about the work they are not doing. Then they want to make as much as money as the men who ARE working because they still to not understand that an employment contract is an exchange of money for services rendered.

It is not an exchange of money for bitching and whining in the break room.

[–]APA770 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Exactly. Women are a lot lazier than men. And then they have the audacity to whine about a so-called "glass ceiling". There is no glass ceiling for women, and there never has been.

[–]BCRE8TVE 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm willing to accept that there is a glass ceiling, because the few women who do work hard get held back by the reputation of all the other women.

I will say though that there is also a glass ceiling because women are not nearly as driven to work as hard or as long as men for reaching the goals they want. So women get stopped by the "glass ceiling" because most don't want the extra stress, and men get the "glass elevator" because they work hard for their goals and don't want to stick around in jobs with lots of toxic women.

If there is a glass ceiling and a glass elevator, then women helped build and maintain it.

I once had the misfortune of working in a team of seven women as the only man in my first job after university.

It was the crudest environment I have ever worked in. Men may have some innuendo in banter but the women I worked with were explicit in talking about general sex, their own sex lives in detail, and belittling their partners.

For the most part I was ignored but it wasn't a very pleasant working environment. I actually got on pretty well with the people I worked with on an individual level and still talk to some of them frequently twenty years later. It's just in a group they were awful to work with.

[–]matrixislife 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If 75% of the workforce are women, then men have already left their jobs. This means the place is full of people who have just come in, this usually puts a heavy load on experienced staff. If the women have been brought in to make up diversity numbers then they are anecdotally notoriously unskilled making the workload even worse for the regular staff.

[–]obesetial 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

The article says that professions which see a rise from 25% to 75% female see more men leave the professions.

The word game here is deceiving. These professions already see women coming in and men leaving so obviously the trend will continue. If company A had 25 women and 75 men in 2020 and it the had 75 women and 25 women in 2021, what do you think will happen in 2022?! Mist likely the trend will continue.

Let's ask these questions instead, why did these companies have such a dramatic increase in female vs. male employees? Is it government incentives which favour women? Is it hiring policies which favour women?

Instead, this article is asking the asinine question why is it that what happened in the past, continue to happen?

[–]APA770 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's blatant sexism and discrimination against men.

Most companies in consulting, finance, tech and many other industries have mentorship progams and leadership programs for women, but nothing for men. Women are the ones that are privileged - not men.

men avoid drama. makes perfect sense.

[–]ThrowAway640KB 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s not that men avoid drama, there is a decent subset who don’t. I have seen plenty of men create drama, and relish it.

It’s just that mature men will bitch-slap the male drama queens upside the back of the head and tell them to grow up. Because that’s where all drama comes from -- immaturity and child-like narcissism. Some men just never “grow up” in this regard, and an all-male workplace will (generally) socially discriminate against them.

[–]lumpynose 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

The team suggested this could indicate that employees were consciously or unconsciously avoiding working in mixed-gender occupations.

I'd say that it's much less due to conscious or unconscious avoidance but rather due to the realization that the women aren't doing as much work as the men and the supervisors aren't dealing with them.

At least that's been my experience; women who work well below the level of their job title and their supervisor doesn't or can't do anything about it, probably out of fear that they'll be accused of sexism/misogyny (if the supervisor is a man). I worked as a combination software developer and server system administrator and it was always the case that the guys would learn new stuff, new technology, new tools, etc. on their own, because we found such things interesting and useful, while the women wouldn't learn new stuff unless directed to by their supervisor.

I think HR departments need a lot more accountability in general. I worked for a university that had a direct correlation between going to HR, for any other reason than being told to, and getting let go. Regardless of gender or the issue. This wasn’t the only time I’ve seen corruption associated with RH departments.

Some people are more comfortable with the same gender. Nothing wrong with it its their life let them quit if they want

[–]HesperianDragon 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I blame microaggressions.

Why stay in a snake den hoping you don't get bit?

[–]TheSnesLord 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Useless article as it doesn't actually say WHY the men quit their jobs when there are too many women join their departments.

I guess it is because the reasons (i.e. the truth) would put women in a negative light, and we all know that we can never ever do that.

If I had to guess it's because female dominated workplaces make life a living hell where you are forced to take on a lot more workload and responsibility, are actively discriminated, live in fear of being accused/ sexually harassed (ass grabbed)/ fired at any given moment, having to step around egg shells as not to hurt any woman's feelings, and having your mental health deteriorating every day you have to deal with that bs.

Another weird thing I've noticed is that whenever a company has a female CEO, at least 80% of the staff are female. But when its a male CEO, it's 50 - 50.

An increasing number of job adverts also proclaim majorty female run companies. If men bragged they were mostly male run companies, they owuld be declared 'sexist', but it's ok for women to do it.

In my experience of working in an office that was almost exclusively female managers, they were unwilling or unable to confront each other with difficult conversations so they spent all their energy sniping at each other through other channels including their subordinates and put them in incredibly tense and awkward situations, it was extremely toxic.

The senior leadership was too busy patting each other on the back about their diversity accomplishments to acknowledge the culture was destroying souls.

I'm not against diversity but leadership is serious and requires a specific set of skills and human qualities and those positions need to be carefully considered, genitals should not be a factor in those decisions.

Female majority workplaces are so cliqued and toxic. Occasionally you find the odd nice person, but they're the exception.

I mean this makes sense in real world time.

There are jobs where they are actively recruiting women for the sake of diversity and them being women. In a jobs space, women behave very differently: socially and psychologically, than men. If I was the only male in a department I would also consider my options to leave as in 2023 I would be scared to voice my opinion without it coming across as offending someone, the likelihood of people listening to a "man" and if any interpersonal problems occurs the women would group and side with each other.

It happens day to day in work places. Women are more likely to come together to oust a man for alleged problems then visa versa. A lot of men feel unsafe in a working environment dominated/ majorities by women. They are not misogynists, they just do not feel safe. We should question why. The work place is not equal. The dogma is that inequality favours men, but it is wrong.

If I said this in front of my boss I would lose my job, and thats precisely the issue.

(And miss me with the trash shit "oh but if your not a misogynist you wouldn't have to worry about causing offend" people give offended if you sniff your nose near them without a mask.)

Thankfully most of the women I've worked with were for the most part pretty tame, but none of them were in positions where a lot of control was.

The worst was probably HR at a company started getting mad because we wanted to get cable at a home we were renting to work on expanding the company half way across the country.

Yes, home. A team of 5 of us all worked together well enough that we agreed it would be more cost effective and comfortable for everyone if we just rented a house with enough rooms for all of us to stay while we built a large expansion. We were already scraping by buying the cheapest bare minimum shit to make everything livable, I actually had a bed that really fucked my back up and made me miserable and they had the audacity to complain that we wanted to be able to watch TV or other small things constantly.

[–]beleidigtewurst 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This doesn't show this cause.

Which might well be that the very reason number of women was raising at that particular job was that there was anti-male stance.

[–]Led-Rain 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I can confirm, working in a department, crew, or anything when the majority is women, is a miserable time. You are guaranteed non-stop drama and stress from constant HR calls/talks. One job had me working on the opposite side of the building. I took my lunches alone. And I had to explain this at least once every 3 months to HR lady, there isn't even an opportunity for me to interact with the women; because they leave an hour after I get there.

Just goes to show how immature a lot of men are. A lot of men lack ambition.

[–]lordluke10 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Great observation. So women should just grow up and be more ambitious, then we will have plenty of women in STEM and software!

[+]einsumzwei -17 points-16 points-15 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

because of “insecurities” males can’t handle women 😢

[–]lordluke10 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Aah makes sense, so it's insecurity that makes women not want to work in male dominated industries like software. /s

[+]einsumzwei -14 points-13 points-12 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No that’s not what I said don’t manipulate my words! Males are insecure not women

[–]lordluke10 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why aren't females insecure for leaving when there are too many men in a workplace?

I work in product management in America which (for those of you unfamiliar) is supposed to be about guiding and driving priority of what engineering teams build to solve business problems and keep customers happy. More and more this profession is turning in to a squad catty of toxic women demeaning engineers behind their back and taking credit for what they build. Seems there is always one or two ACTUALLY badass women on the team but the mean girl gangs with their vocal fry usually out number single out and sabatage the cool ones. There is a study or stat somewhere that says women generally care more about people and relationships than things and systems and this holds true. I see men in this field focus on data and process and these often toxic women focus on he said she said posturing. Again, not all...but it's becoming the norm. Hate to keep watching firebomb the ACTUAL #GIRLBOSSES who rock but yet fed up and end up quitting. I don't know what's driving this.
