While I am all for PPD, some of this is a bit more nuanced. As a guy you can go get free condoms from many places. The issue with feminine hygiene products is that they are taxed the same as personal property, when basic necessities, groceries, shampoo and what not, do not get taxed. I don't think they should be free, but taxing them is just plain wrong.

The idea of all that being free is ridiculous in everyday life. I have no idea how to handle birth control and young women. I think they deserve better options.

I agree that birth control is society’s responsibility, not just women’s. I’m all for paying my fair share if it means BC is covered by insurance. After all, I’m not the one that has to remember to take a pill every day, or gain weight from depo shots, or have a surgical procedure for an IUD, etc.

I’m also in favor of the removal of taxes from tampons and pads. Not sure where the argument that they want them for free is coming from, as I’ve only seen the argument to remove taxation, but they are necessities for decades and it’s not like only women buy them. Any man with a wife, live-in girlfriend and/or daughter is shelling out money for them, too.

Someone described this concept to me as dignity either being the same as human rights or dignity being a human right. Many of what are basic human rights are really to allow people to first survive, and then live as a contributing member of society in a dignified manner. An example is seen in homelessness. If they don't have adequate shelter, education, fresh food/water etc. then they may still survive off scraps, but either have a very difficult time or find it impossible to obtain dignity and be integrated into the community. IMO the concept of free women's hygiene is much the same. In the same way a service should exist to see the eventual extinction of homelessness, a service should exist to ensure that there is no person who cannot provide themselves with hygiene products. Taken out of context, sure, people will mooch off a free service and not have to pay to go to Harvard or something, but the theory behind it is that anyone who can afford it pays, and anyone who can't has it provided for them.

I've never heard girls say they deserve free education over boys. I personally believe that everyone deserves free education from the state, but anything above that should be paid out of your own pocket. There are women only STEM scholarships, which I don't think are fair. But women as a whole are not clamouring for exclusively free education due to their X chromosomes.

Now to hygiene products. This is hard because they vary from state to state and country to country. I'll go on where I am from, because that's all I have experience with and authority to comment on. Feminine hygiene products is slang for tampons/pads/cups etc.. These are separate from universal hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, razors, and so on. Feminine hygiene products are necessary. This is not arguable. Would you like to get on a bus and find there is dried period blood on the seat? No? Then you also think that feminine hygiene products are necessary.

It is frustrating that while they are necessary, they do not get tax exemptions that bread, milk, condoms etc get. Feminine hygiene products should not be treated as a luxury! The majority of people can afford to pay the extra $0.1, whatever the tax is, but it doesn't mean we should have to.

I have not heard anything about wanting free birth control. That doesn't mean it's not being talked about, though. It is good that condoms do not have the luxury tax on them. Birth control pills are used for more than not having babies - they are also used to decrease iron loss. Acne control is another use, but the iron loss is the most important. At this point, birth control is just another form of medication. Should all medication be free? Should all medication be taxed? I don't know, but I think this is a more realistic line of discussion than whether birth control should be free.
