There is often times a huge wait for female gynos because if given the option with male or female and no wait time most women choose the woman. But a lot of people don’t want to wait for weeks.

Also I’ve found male gynos to be MUCH more gentle with the spec. And when doing Pap smears.

Plus you just remember while you are there at the dr that it’s their job and they see a million vaginas so get it and get out

Male gyros certainly aren't preferred by most women, however they often have a different perspective on women's issues and (sometimes) are actually less dismissive of women who have a medical problem.

Earlier today I saw a post from a woman who went to a female gyno and she was slut shamed for having slept with 4 guys. She was very upset and made an appointment with a male gyno and he took her seriously and was not judgmental and diagnosed her problem.

This is not saying all female gynos are bad and male gynos are good, but I think a male gyno can be a good doctor who isn't creepy.

I would find it extremely odd and off putting if my partner expressed “worry” over me seeing a male gyno doctor. I’ve never had that happen thankfully. If my brothers, Dad or male friends gave me a worried opinion about this, I’d think they were spending waaaay too much time thinking about my lady parts!

I would think they should get over it tbh. The important thing is quality of care so I'll see who I need to for that, male or female. For pap smears we just see the nurse at the GP here, who are overwhelmingly women so it's always a woman who does my smear. However, I got a referral to investigate possible endometriosis last year and I went private, and the only private consultants locally were men. It was either potentially wait months or years for a woman on the NHS or go to a man. And he was fab, absolutely not dismissive of my concerns, gentle during the exams etc, and got me the treatment I needed. Couldn't have had a better experience, and I think it would be a shame for people to avoid him or think ill of his intentions just because he's a man, when he's a fantastic doctor.

I prefer a female gyno, but I've been to male gynecologists and the experience is not one bit sexual. I have no problem going to them. I assume they chose their profession like any of us, they were interested in female reproductive system or thought it lucrative. I doubt it's sexual for most of them, though I understand that there are surely creeps. I just don't care much.

Edit: also, I'm sure they know more about vaginas than you or me ever will lol

It would be a huge red flag if a guy in my life felt uncomfortable by a male docor examining me. I can't imagine having a partner with such a thought process.

i personally wouldn’t go to one, but i know a lot of women who do and they love and trust their doctors.

there was a really good ask reddit thread geared towards male gynecologists recently about why they pursued that field. it was pretty interesting. i can understand being interested in the medical field that involves the creation of life- it is pretty fucking cool.

at the end of the day if someone feels comfortable with their doctor that’s the most important thing. i would find it to be out of bounds for someone close to me to comment on the gender of my obgyn negatively.

I prefer a woman for a gyno, but in any case I trust their knowledge. It has nothing to do with personnal experience, it's about how well this person studied and became an expert in their medicine speciality. Since my recent pregnancy and the birth of my child, I really care less. I had SO many appointements, so many people looking and touching me, that I just got used to it. I had a male midwife at the hospital the day my baby was born, he was the most attentive and careful. He took care of my well being and my pricacy better than many other midwifes and nurses I had to deal with.

I would think they were paranoid, possessive and weird. A male OB with a male nurse delivered my second son. They were lovely and efficient.

All that being said I personally prefer a woman, just cuz it makes me more comfortable.

I would be pretty disturbed if any man I knew at all expressed worry about the gender of my doctor. Wtf? Why would they even know??? Can’t say I’ve ever had any men in my life even ask about the gender of any of my doctors. I’d think that was insane if they expressed a problem with such a thing or if they even asked about it. Like it’s be creepy as shit if my brother wanted to know what gyno I went to! If you are suspicious over certain doctors over their gender then you can choose to see a doctor of your preference, but I don’t think it’s your business who someone else sees.

I don't have any opinion on their worries about something so general. If they have specific knowledge about a specific gyno, I'll take that into consideration but who I take as my doctor is going to be based on my own knowledge, experiences, and comfort, not someone elses.

When choosing a doctor im going to assume they all went to school for it so their baseline knowledge should be similar. Whether I continue going to them will be based on what they tell me and how well I think their treatment is going to be.

I have a bias for female doctors but at the end of the day, if I need help its probably going to be whoever is available to help me.

They haven't had one, we have a public health system in Ireland. You get the doctor you are assigned. Male or female, they aren't interested in your vagina. They're there to do their job.

Gyno is not just about a vagina. Its reproductive health, when you start menopause, breast cancer, etc.

Ive been put off more by female Drs over male Drs.

You can also find dentists that secretly record and sexually assault when they are out cold.

I'll add, I seem to know about mens health over many men. The amount of men that dont get skin checks that I recognize its a hinky looking mole or that more regular orgasms can minimize prostate cancer risks.

What do you think we learn in med school? Would you not want to see a cardiologist who’s never had a heart attack? Or a surgeon who’s never gone under the knife as a patient cuz you don’t think they could relate?

The thing about obgyns behaving badly is that people can be assholes. We see shitty people every day doing sexually inappropriate things- high school coaches, pastors, foster parents, and yeah sometimes doctors. But I promise you (as someone who is a physician and had to do 4 years of obstetric work) the novelty of a vagina wears off pretty quickly. Much like a female doctor seeing a penis, it’s just another part of the body, like an elbow or a forehead.

So I know this is just my experience, but for me, I've started to prefer male gynecologists. My past experience with one's that were women they were very dismissive of my pain(which makes no sense)and were too forceful with the spec. I've had great experiences with the ones who were male because they took my pain very seriously and were extremely gentle with the spec on top of being very professional. So I prefer men over women now.

I'd also be suspicious, but I don't think other people should act like my healthcare is their business either. Especially if they don't even have the same worries (they're not female), commenting on it would come across as patronising. I request women doctors when possible and the only reason I'd be going to a man is if there wasn't another option available, and it's really nobody's place to say I just shouldn't go.

i respect any of my H's issues with what kind of males i am alone with and dont see it as a problem, i deliberately chose a very overprotective man and i like it. that being said i have no interest in a male gynecologist so its not an issue

I would seriously raise a brow if my husband would be worried about me seeing a male gyno. This would seem like some serious projecting and/or huge insecurity.

That said, you don't need to have cancer in order to be a good cancer doctor. Being a woman doesn't guarantee you're a better gyno. I've been to a male gyno and he was the most awesome doctor i've EVER been to! I chose him for my birth. So gentle and respectful, he explained every step, he answered every question, he was also an amazing professional, optimistic and light hearted. God dammit, i want all doctors to be like this! He really set the bar way high for all my doctor encounters.

Honestly, I'd think he should mind his own business and was a bit of a nutter. A doctor has medical training far surpassing owning a penis. A female urologist knows more about your penis and how it operates and how to fix it if it is sick than you do. Same for a male gyno. I have a male gyno and while I'll switch after he dies to a woman to be more comfortable, he has done a stellar job, has been very gentle, and very assuring.

I think most women prefer a gyno that is female, but that’s not always a possibility. I have several friends that swear by their male ob/gyn. I have gone to a male a few times before in a pinch and I was fine. They are doctors they have seen it all and generally despite what you may think, most of what they are seeing is not something that turns them on, and generally not pleasant. This is your issue you need to get past it.

I prefer female gynecologists. I find they are more empathetic, less judgemental, and more knowledgeable from personal experience. They will also level with you but don't try to nudge you in the direction they want. I have a fantastic one right now which quickly and skillfully addressed my uterine fibroid. She was very good at keeping me informed and educated.

The problem is getting in with a stellar female gynecologist can be difficult. They rarely take on new patients, you basically have to get lucky and find one right when they're starting their own practice.

That being said a lot of male obstetricians are often recommended I have noticed to friends because they're older and have a lot of experience. I think it's a holdover since most doctors were men 20-30 years ago.

My partner wouldn't mind me going to a male gyno though, it's just healthcare. He is very happy with my gyno though because after my surgery she sat with him and answered all his questions and kept him informed throughout the entire process.

My brother and dad have no idea who my gyno is. Why would they? That's weird.

I prefer a female gyno and unlike what others here have stated, I find them more gentle than male gynos. But either way, it’s a doctor. They are there to help you and keep you well. Are there creepy doctors out there? Yes, just like nearly every other profession there are a few bad apples you read about in the news, but most of them are just doing their jobs. Also I don’t recall ever in the 50-odd years I have been seeing doctors of any kind, having a conversation with my romantic partners about the gender of my doctor at all.

I used to be uncomfortable with the idea of a male gyno but I've had shitty experiences with female gynos so clearly your sex doesn't determine your bedside manner. I have heard the horror stories of doctors recording their patients but those are few and far between, I've also heard horror stories about female gynos doing some fucked up shit. So I try to get recommendations from people I know and trust - if this person is highly recommended, whether they're a man or a woman doesn't matter. Sometimes you can't get an appointment with a female doctor because they're booked up for months and you have to go with whoever is available.

Well, yes. Because your average guy hasn't gone through 12 years of school and residency. I'm sure the average gynecologist, regardless of their sex, is more knowledgeable about the inner workings of the female reproductive system than the average person, be they male or female. Your average woman knows more than the average guy, but doctors aren't just randos you pulled off the street.

As for male family members/friends being uncomfortable - get over it. I understand the concern but I'm the one that's going to be examined and if I'm okay with a male doctor, that person should be respectful of it. Same way I'd be respectful if they chose a female urologist.

If it makes you feel better, being a gynecologist isn't some glamorous profession where you look at smoking hot supermodels with vulvas that look like flowers and vaginas that smell like roses and cupcakes. They deal with a lot of yeast infections, they deal with people like my mother and grandmother who had cervical cancer, it ain't pretty. So look at them like any other doctor - they've signed up to help people knowing they'll have to deal with some gross stuff.
