If I ever get hugs from a guy, we usually have to do the hand shake first and then the aggressive slap on the back move to establish that we are both still straight.

This is a weird take. It's certainly not true in my life. For one, I come from a family of huggers, and hug my male family members and friends often. Secondly, most of the time I hug my female friends (or spouses of my friends), it's initiated by them. I don't think they want to fuck me. I don't want to fuck them.

I don't think sexual is the right word but there is an intimacy to it beyond what I feel when hugging other men. I don't think there's any harm in that as long as you don't go out of your way to hug your female friends too much, try to hug female friends you're not that close with, or otherwise somehow make it weird.

So...I hug my male friends and family pretty regularly. I have tough-ass male friends who do the same. In fact, the only reason I'm more reticent to hug female friends in a platonic way is probably because men like you have made it weird by insisting on a sexual nature for the act. Kinda like how it's difficult to be a grown man and nice to kids in public because of societal stigma brought on by sexually aggressive men. If you can't imagine or experience hugging a female friend (even one you're attracted to) for a reason other than sexual gratification, you are unambiguously the problem.

When I was in middle and high school, I always liked ending up beside a girl when we huddled / prayed (Christian school) as a team with our warms around each of the adjacent person’s shoulders, and I definitely appreciated the few times that a woman gave me a side or light hug.

I didn’t have any friendships outside of the team - I was far too afraid to engage, and no one liked me back then because they were all stuck up rich hot people, and I was extremely timid and traumatized, so even the few girls who might have shown interest, my fear and social ineptitude screwed over those chances.

I wouldn’t completely disagree with you OP, but honestly, I think most guys with female friends whom they hug are either really low T or asexual guys, or gay, or they’re confident guys who don’t have to savor the creepy moment they get to feel the body of their female buddy.

I really doubt creep inguels have female friends they get to get off on hugging.

With the exception of maybe a couple of my female friends, I only initiate hugs with women if they are family (sisters, aunts, cousins, etc.). Other women, such as coworkers (depending on circumstances of course), would need to initiate hugs.

It's hard to explain, but a man can feel some level of "closeness" with a woman without it meaning that he wants to sleep with her. Sure, he can have "what-if" thoughts in his head, but there's also this thing called "self-control". For most guys, self-control is stronger than sexual desire.

In my case, how "close" I feel to a woman will determine whether I give her a "front" hug or a "side" hug.
