I'm an egalitarian, so I'm equally supportive of male and female rights and want egalitarianism to be the default gender rights movement so that the rights of men and women are advanced on an equal basis.

Having the default gender rights movement instead be feminism specifically is a conflict of interest which neglects the issues facing men. There's also a toxic miasma of misandry infecting feminism which egalitarian feminists could do a better job fighting off.

Well we ditch the whole "Patriarchy" framework for one since it's a bs word that can basically mean anything. Then we'd have to find out, with legitimate and not cherry picked and heavily manipulated studies (feminism and feminists are guilty of such manipulations most of the time) to find out where both men and women are disadvantaged and what can be done about such problems. Getting rid of feminist dogma also opens us up to just being decent to one another, since women's heads would no longer be filled with the idea that men are basically an oppressive upper class, undeserving of consideration in the face of their overwhelming advantage (which, by the way is not a thing, in fact women are very advantaged in places where there's feminism). Basically, we should approach women's rights as we would any other set of human rights and not attach any dogma to them, just analyze the circumstances and come up with solutions.

I don't oppose the literal and good-faith mission of feminism: to represent women's unique struggles culturally and legislatively. They do exist and advocating for women against those struggles is good.

I do oppose what the charged colloquial ideology of what modern feminism has become. It's hard to be an ally when I am absolutely inundated with unchecked misandry both online and in my life. It has become pervasive and truly oppressive.

I've been back and forth on this position a few times myself.

The thing to understand about feminism is that it's not about equality. It's an advocacy movement for women based on the framework that women are an oppressed class and that men are the oppressor class.

They try to destroy everything that opposes this narrative. You can read about what happened with domestic violence shelters in the UK and what feminists did. You can read about studies on intimate interpersonal violence that feminists have modified and bullied researchers so that the gender symmetry disappears from the reports. All of the things that feminists do to oppose advocacy for male victims and even the fact that men can be victims at all.

Also, just read how feminists talk about men in feminist spaces and ask yourself: Do these people believe that men are human beings deserving of respect? Do they actually believe that equality is the goal? Or are they just trying to push the narrative that men are oppressors, torturers etc.?

It is my personal conviction that women will never be free as long as they are prisoners of this narrative and as long as they consider men the enemy.

I have, will, and always will continue to fight and advocate for women's rights and women's issues. But now I also want to fight and advocate for men.

You're still really stuck in this black-or-white blame-centric mindset... You're framing "feminism" with this monolithic tribal mindset that demands: "You're with us or against us"... and that's absolutely not how the majority of us in this sub view things.

I gave a lot of thought to my comment in your previous post and I really hope you give it serious consideration, especially the recommendation that you read "Of Boys and Men".

After I wrote that comment I checked your comment history and something stood out to me... maybe I'm way off here, but I get the impression that you are suffering from some pretty deep self-esteem issues and that's even manifested itself into some gender dysphoria. I'm a little worried that you so focused on certain aspects of feminist thought that paint men in ways that play to some of the darker parts of your own psyche which are telling you that you don't deserve empathy or compassion and/or that there's something wrong with you... and I just want to say, whether you are trans or not, you do deserve empathy and compassion and there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with who you are.

To tie that idea back to this idea of "supporting versus opposing" feminism... One of the aspects of modern feminism I am most critical of and see as toxic is this notion that has become increasingly prevalent which asserts that men are inherently less deserving of empathy and compassion, that women have a monopoly on being/feeling marginalized... it's absolutely not true and is downright sexist.

That said, I absolutely do not "oppose feminism"... I have a huge amount of respect for Gloria Steinem and the marvelous social changes that her movement achieved in only a few short decades. I believe society is better off where women have equal status in education, career, political, and financial spaces... and I believe that my criticism of modern feminism is not in spite of these views, it's a logical and reasonable extension of them. Just as I believe the workplace is better off with women having an equal role/access, I believe that the family is better off with men having an equal role/access... and I believe that male victims of DV and SA should be treated the same as female victims.

Constructive criticism of feminism is not opposition. Calling for increased accountability and acknowledgement of the agency of women in modern society is not opposition and it's not blame.

When it comes to what I "oppose"... I oppose any speech, viewpoint, or movement that antagonizes gender equality whether that comes from men or women, whether that comes from progressives or conservatives, whether that comes from MRA's or feminists.

So to answer your question: We solve these issues by moving past the gendered tribalism and gender war mentalities and focus, collectively, on progressive solutions that lift up both men and women. Again, read "Of Boys and Men" because Richard Reeves goes into great detail about exactly this topic.

Because it isn't to just support feminism. It's which version you support. There's plenty, and they aint all good.

Stopping harrasment, abuse, mistreatment, and inequality against women? Awesome.

But I've heard far too many so-called feminist spew hateful rhetoric. Aimed directly at men, often citing studies that affirm their bias. And ignoring ones that don't. Or anecdotal experiences as world view generalisations.

I'd love to have real conversations with feminists but when I disagree, it's commonly considered an outrage. I'm derailing, distracting, and playing the victim.

Example. I had a pointless argument with a self identified feminist suggesting the majority of men would commit assaults by default if the could get away with it. I disagreed.

If a man is repeatedly told he's the problem. He's privileged. He's supporting the patriarchy. He's dismissed. He's the monster by default unless proven otherwise..

I mean, is it so hard to understand why he wouldn't be invested in supporting something like that?

Edit (response to the reply below): Feminism's fighting for freedom is to believe all women and put any man in jail no matter how baseless the accusations are. Fighting to get DEI quotas and special programs and billions in funding to make sure women don't compete with men in the same field because competition is impossible and toxic because of the patriarchy. So women should have a dedicated quota system getting them jobs with the bare minimum qualifications. Feminism should conceptualize a version of gender equality from women's perspectives. That's totally fine. Men should conceptualize a version of gender equality from their perspective. Where the models conflict should be worked out and compromised on. Ideally, you'll have a system that makes 60% of people happy. That's equality. Versus "I get everything I want the way I want it and you don't even get to participate in the conversation." That might be feminism, but it's not equality, and I'm tired of pretending it is.

(The following responses are what I gathered from personal experiences, don’t take them as an absolute truth because that would be a strawman. But I’m sure many a people here also heard these. You can try to post it yourself though)

Patriarchy is a very vague word. Vague enough to never be beaten. Even if all the heads of state were to be women, the “patriarchy” would live on because of ceos or religions or the fact that these heads of state sign documents that their husbands force them etc etc etc (like how feminists claim pro-life female legislators are irl. Which is ironically misogyny because it erases women’s autonomy)

It’s so vague of a term that you can blame everything on it. A perfect villain who is responsible for every bad thing in this world

Well, the world just doesn’t work like that sadly. There isn’t an overarching villain or a system that we can defeat, and all of a sudden it’s an utopia

The term patriarchy is also an inherently sexual term. It’s something that only men can be blamed on creating and benefitting from. Women can only “upheld” it.

Modern feminism relies on the “men are oppressors, women are victims”. This type of ideology cannot hold accountable women that are making the world a worse place. Neither can it help men.

It’s an inherently divisive ideology. It thrives by shaming men and making women afraid. That’s just doesn’t sound like equality to me. That’s why I am egalitarian and that’s why I prefer to fight the actual system and the actual elites.

3) “Women’s problems and men’s problems are interconnected. That’s why by helping women we are also helping men”

This is just trickle down economics but for sympathy. Again, the world just doesn’t work like that. You can’t indirectly help someone. You need to be actively helping them.

They are right that most problems are interconnected. But they can’t solve those problems by only tugging on the female side. You also need to tug the male side. It’s a two sided problem in which the feminists only focus on one, saying that if they pull hard enough the other side will get solved on its own

4) “Feminism is for women, men create their own systems”

I just wanted to add this, I know it’s kinda contradictory to the question .

Feminism is for women, yes. And it’s great that women have their own voice. Every group should have one. But if you are for women (feminism) then you can’t claimed that you are for men too.

I have tried to care about women's issues as an egalitarian but the actual definition of what egalitarianism means. I do not abide to the Feminist claim that their movement is a synonymous term for egalitarianism. This has been an issue recently over at r/Egalitarianism where a bunch of Feminist trolls have been brigrading that subreddit and claiming they aren't egalitarian.

This has literally never been true either. "Patriarchy" is an utterly absurd concept, that shifts between a malformed theory and a paranoid boogyman. Class conflict doesn't care about identity. It's elite classes vs lower classes. The elites can be men or women. Thinking of the upper classes as aligned with our identities lower down the chain is at best naive at worst directly useful to the ruling class. I'm actually going to direct you to a feminist who agrees with me. Alexandra Kollontai. She warned us of the "bourgeois feminists" a hundred years ago. She properly predicted a lot of what we're seeing now. Her take was that feminism was a means to an end and the moment that it became divisive or stood in the way of the unity of the lower classes it was to be discarded. I have said many times before that if her flavor of it was the mainstream feminism I probably wouldn't despise it from the core of my soul.

Well we're at that point. Feminism divides people, it doesn't unite them. Most forms of identitarianism are like that. Men are not an oppressor class and women aren't an oppressed class. Either can be in the position of "elite." And the progressive stack caste system doesn't hold up to much scrutiny when examined from a class first position.

I'm not a woman but after listening to womens' experiences women definitely face issues, many of which are caused by men. Women are harassed often by men from a young age, women face hiring discrimination, workplace sexism, et cetera.

Lol. Lmao even. Harassment is two ways and not unique to sex as an identity. When it happens to women it might be given more attention but that doesn't mean anything except people care more when women say something. I've also heard people cry-wolf about it enough that I no longer really give it as as much thought or concern. My first question is usually "is it actually harassment or is someone being oversensitive to something normal?" That inane "state rape" trend proves my point.

Women face less hiring discrimination than men and have more opportunities given to them at the institutional level for both education and hiring. What you wrote is completely backwards. Work place harassment against women is also taken infinitely more seriously than harassment against men. To think that they have it worse in this regard is ridiculous.

So if you don't support feminism how do we go about solving these issues?

I'm more concerned with countering feminism's attempts at superiority. If our egalitarianism helps women too, cool, that's a bonus but it's not my primary concern.

I think the crux here is how you define feminism. You still understand feminism to mean belief in gender equality. I don't believe in that definition. I think feminism is belief in patriarchy theory. It doesn't matter how sincerely you support gender equality. The vast majority of feminists will tell you you are not a feminist if you do not support patriarchy theory. And I think patriarchy theory is incompatible with gender equality. I can support gender equality without supporting patriarchy theory.

Feminists like to play motte & bailey with definitions to avoid criticisms like this one. So you might want to jump forward in your chair and go "That's not the correct definition!" But really sincerely think about how feminists describe patriarchy most of the time, and whether it's intellectually honest for them to say those things and then when someone engages with what they've said to then switch to a different definition to slip away from criticism of their own words.

If patriarchy were just the neutral observation that men hold the majority of positions of institutional power and that needs to change, it would be fine. But that is not the case. Patriarchy theory is presented almost always as the belief that the majority of men for thousands of years have conspired amongst themselves to oppress women for their own benefit.

It is impossible for this claim to not be gender essentialist. To claim that the majority of men are responsible for violently forcing women basically into slavery and constructing a society that systemically keeps them enslaved is impossible to do without the strong implication that men are innately evil somehow. Why would so many men have worked together to start patriarchy otherwise? Why would countless generations of men that followed continue to support it?

And if feminists think men carry some innate evil within them, how can they ever support men being equal to them? The natural conclusion is that men and women being equal means women are in danger. That in an equal situation, men, as a group, will still be aggressive towards women, as a group. In an equal society, how would women protect themselves against that?

If you really think about feminism's world view, the best it can offer is a world where women have more power than men on the basis that they need it to protect themselves from men.

Thought experiment. Imagine men & women as two people living in a house together - person 1 and person 2. Imagine political power as represented by guns. Equality means both people have a gun or neither of them has a gun. But person 1 is stronger than person 2, and has a natural urge towards violence against person 2. From person 2's point of view, is equality truly an acceptable situation for them?

I don’t oppose feminism in the textbook definition of it being advancing gender equality for women. I am very much in support of that.

I oppose the black and white thinking that women = oppressed and men = oppressors. We’re all oppressed by harmful gender roles and the oppressors are those who perpetuate them. I’m not sure where you’re from, but in the US a lot of people reference our recent election results as being the fault of men. Yes, a slight majority of men voted for Trump (~55%), but only a slight majority of women voted for Harris (~53%). Roughly half of the votes trump received were from women because there’s more female voters. This translates to how gender roles are enforced in society. It’s not a single gender perpetuating misogyny and misandry, it’s our society as a whole.

I oppose the one sided approach to issues faced by people of any gender. The issues you listed can, and do, affect men as well. It’s perfectly fine to acknowledge if and when women are the majority of those facing such issues, but the solution needs to be addressing the issue for all people regardless of gender. If it doesn’t, it’s not equality. We’ve seen how a one sided approach just turns to reversing the inequality with education.

My strategy is to say fuck the group labels, and focus on specific individual behaviors.

When I see someone behaving in a pro-equality way, I go out of my way to make sure they know that I appreciate their behavior. If they are addressing men's issues, I make doubly sure to do so, because they are likely catching strays from both feminists and conservatives for doing so. Though it's a little sexist of me, I go further out of my way to encourage women who are standing up for men, because it's so uncommon and I know they're being hit by a ton of "pick me" accusations.

If I see someone behaving in an anti-equality way, I go out of my way to make sure they know that I don't approve of that behavior. Again, doubly so if they are taking shots at men because so few people are willing to stick up for men. And I make very sure to target the problem behavior, not the characteristics of the person. People should be held accountable for their own actions, not for those of everyone who happens to look a little like them. Properly targeting the behavior instead of saying shit like "Men are trash, men who aren't trash won't be offended by this" is one of the behaviors I make sure to encourage.

There are a couple things here to clarify for the sake of this discussion.
There are the definitions, theories and practice of Feminism.

Feminism isn't a monolith itself. There are many different branches of feminism as a result feminists themselves can disagree with each other on all kinds of things. That also means I can agree and disagree with different parts of feminist branches depending how they define terms and what there theories are. Some much more so than others. None of this prevents feminists themselves from acknowledging and attempting to tackle woman's.

Speaking for myself just because I reject much of feminism doesn't mean I have to reject all of feminism. Like them I can just have a different interpretation, understanding and perspective. The general idea that men and woman are equal and should be treated humanly is something I agree with and something I suspect most on here would agree with too. I just disagree with too much of there analysis, terms and definitions to consider myself a feminist.

The way I see it there are 2 main variants of Feminism. Radical Feminism and regular Feminism. I have no problem with the latter, and passively support it. The former on the other hand, I actively oppose. I can’t speak for other members in this sub but I would assume they operate similarly.

I don't care about women. I am indifferent to them and WILL be indifferent. As long as men are not involved in crimes I simply do not care. Don't blame me for it. I grew up just listening to how all men are bad, how only men are the problem etc. So I would naturally be wired to be concerned only when men are involved in a crime committed against women. If you focus too much on the gender of the criminals committing the crime instead of the victim people will naturally be trained to focus on the criminal than the victim. I am not anyone's saviour. As long as I am not actively committing evil against any women you should be ok with it.

Edit : And I have met a lot of women who are like me. I am yet to meet a man who is like this. Either they care about all or noone.
