I agree that a false rape claim should be a crime, but it can also be a little dangerous. We don’t want innocent men getting locked up, but we don’t want innocent women being locked up either. If it’s going to be a crime, it needs to be probable that there was malicious intent. If there isn’t enough evidence to convince an alleged rapist, then we still need to make sure there IS enough evidence to prove a false accusation.

Very biased reporting. The statement that "It's already a crime to make a false police report." is a complete misdirection and deflection. Almost nobody is ever prosecuted for making a false police report. It's almost impossible to prove and the penalty is too menial to make the prosecution worthwhile. Increasing the penalty and laying out a specific law can give prosecutors the tools they need to actually prosecute malicious or knowingly false reports.

I trust women exactly as much as I trust everybody else. When there's something real and permanent on the line I assume that everybody will lie to enhance their own position. I verify facts and and make sure that there's a preponderance of evidence before drawing any conclusions. At least I try to do that, I'm certainly not perfect.

On the surface this sounds like great progress but I'm really suspicious as it's Alabama. I suspect this is in preparation for adding a rape exemption to the anti-abortion law after it's been challenged in the Supreme court. I suspect the plan is to over turn roe v wade and make it permissible to make abortion illegal, but from their enlightened thrones to declare we must have compassion and allow abortions in the case of rape and incest etc. Alabama will get a slap on the wrist and the naughty scamps told to go back and redo their law with compassion this time and allow in cases of rape.
If abortion is banned unless you've been raped, then there's a temptation for anyone wanting an abortion to claim they were raped as a "loophole". It's their word against some absent unnamed assailant who the woman has no clue who it was. One misguided way to attempt to prevent that is to wave a big risk of punishment stick as a threat to anyone who considers it an option.

They shouldn't be acting as if Dr. Ford's accusations are accurate when we have no way of knowing which of the two was telling the truth. There was no evidence, no corroborating witnesses, and no crime scene. So her accusations had no weight to them, especially given the tremendous incentive someone would have to lie given that the balance of the court was at stake and that we were already well into a national panic around sexual assault that suggested all accusations (from women specifically) should just be believed. Again, we have no way of knowing whether Brett Kavanaugh did anything wrong, just like we have no way of knowing whether anyone who is appointed to the court did anything wrong. So I don't understand how what happened would have provided grounds to deny him the appointment.

I am also not sure how some people think the gender of the senators who voted on the bill is relevant. Why don't we mention gender when legislators vote in favor of expanding abortion access? And why don't we consider gender when a legislature is voting on an issue that primarily affects men? Why don't we consider whether legislators have experience in the medical field when they vote on bills involving medicine? How about considering experience working in industry when they vote on industrial regulations?

In order for a representative to represent you accurately, all they need is to agree with your point of view. It doesn't matter what demographic group they fit into or what background they have. The committee that drafts the legislation meets with doctors, factory workers, women, and whoever else they need to in order to make sure that they understand the many facets of the issue because legislators cannot possibly know everything or be everyone. Focusing on the gender of the people who voted for this is a very anti-male and dishonest way of debating the issue.

Also, they are cherry picking anyway because there were women in the House of Representatives who voted in favor of the bill, the person who sponsored it was a woman, and the governor who signed it was a woman. The fact that they have to single out the senators specifically shows that they are just being manipulative.

That being said, the one point that I agree with them on is that a bill to outlaw false accusations of rape is unnecessary because filing a false police report is already illegal. The reason that so few false accusers are convicted is because it is difficult to prove that an accusation is false, just like how it is also difficult to prove that an accusation is true. So that is the price we pay for a justice system that does the job it is supposed to do.

perhaps the state should publish the cost to the state( every year) of these false accusations in time , money , resources and not to mention any lawsuit that involves paying legal cost and compensation.

mark all these costs as taxes collected and wasted, perhaps even give an example of what that lost taxes could have paid for instead

like that hospital, those police officers need to prevent crime etc..
