I am a man in my 30s With a non-sexual and nonviolent misdemeanor conviction from more than 10 years ago. 4 years ago I dated a woman who is an attorney and when I ended my relationship with her 2 years later, she began to file False police reports about me and Even obtained a dubious restraining order. It was all extremely easy for her to do and it required absolutely no evidence. Over the course of the following three years I was arrested numerous times and the cost of attorneys and bail accumulated to almost 40,000 dollars. She managed to get the city attorney to charge me with 19 misdemeanors and they offered a plea bargain of three years in jail +5 years probation. I told them to go fuck themselves and went to trial and was found not guilty of all charges. Many people testified including myself on my own behalf And my ex-girlfriend who was the alleged victim was caught perjuring herself more times than I can count. Trial lasted more than eight days. In the end she faced absolutely no repercussions and is still practicing law today with no consequences for her illegal behavior and waste of police and court resources. There’s more than enough evidence proving that she purposely lied and was seeking revenge and never was an actual victim Yet she gets to go about her life without so much as even an acknowledgment that what she did was illegal.

There's so many things wrong with the Sex Offender Registry right now (such as public urination being on the list). So why would we add another thing that really isn't even of a sexual nature to the list?

I understand the desire to inform the public about dangers they might face from those willing to file a false police report. However, do you know the effect this would have? It punishes those who do come forward to clear the names of those they've wronged. Do you think as many people will admit that they lied once there was a law that would punish them for telling the truth?

Hell, the justice system hardly prosecutes those who do file false reports. Officers don't spend time investigating false reporting incidents unless they become a recurring issue. There should be a campaign to have the justice system actually follow through with charging those who do file false reports.

The Sex Offender Registry is broken for sure. Given.

The theory behind the Sex Offender Registry is that the public needs to be aware of a danger - because the recidivism rates for sex crimes are high. Is there any reason to think that the recidivism rate for false accusations is high? Not sure this is the correct tool.

There are two problems I have with this. Specifying women could turn some people off for one. The second is that it shouldn’t be the sex offender registry. It should be a separate list or a sub-list or something like that. It shouldn’t be put with people who legitimately raped or molested someone. A sex offender is someone who rapes or molests someone, not someone who makes a false accusation of a crime. Maybe there should be another list for people who knowingly falsely accuse people of crimes.

I disagree - lying is not a sexual crime.

I would agree that people making accusations of this nature should be charged with the offence of Perjury.

I don't know if the current laws cover this (I tried reading the Perjury act of 1911 but honestly, it's just gobbledegook to me) but I would support a petition that stated "False accusations of rape should be punishable under the Perjury act".

As other posters have noted, it doesn't matter what the gender is of the person making such a false accusation, men and women making false accusations should be punished equally.

Hopefully, if it became widely known that lying about such things to the police would result in a prison sentence, as opposed to a slap on the wrist for time-wasting, it would reduce the amount of false accusations.

This whole petition is a pretty big joke and I think a stain on the community. Lists don’t work and specifically lists targeting one gender.

This is nothing but a knee jerk reaction with no thought process put into it. It is also based on feelings and no logical thinking. Something that we accuse feminism of.

What method would be used to prove who is lying and who isn't? Wouldn't a lot of rapists who want to silence their victims try and get them on this list? Also shouldn't this include men, who can lie about sexual assault as well?

Late to the party, I’m sure this will get buried, but I don’t see anyone talking about the enormous gaping flaw with this idea; real predators will seek out women who are known liars and assault them. They will challenge the woman’s word if they are charged.

I'm OK with this, but only if they are convicted in court of deliberately making a false report (as in the article).

It shouldn't apply to cases where they make an accusation but there isn't enough evidence to convict. Because those are in the grey area where we don't know who is telling the truth.

It also shouldn't apply to people who make a mistake and pick the wrong person from a lineup.

Also as /u/DadJokesAndMore said it should apply to both genders.

I am afraid that this might actually do more harm than good though, Because people who are currently afraid to speak up about their assault would be even more afraid to than before, Could you imagine being raped and abused, only to be labeled as a sex offender when you were unable to prove someone guiilty? I just don't think it would be ethical. I mean, people have gotten away with rape before, and punishing someone for an accusation seems unfair. It would hurt those who have ACTUALLY been hurt more than those who hadn't. Instead, wouldn't an act protecting the alleged Offender until they are proven guilty be more effective? such as to protect the innocent (until found guilty) from being fired or socially outcast from society based on accusations? Then, those who falsely acccuse would no longer be able to get the "the damage is already done" reaction, and ruin innocent lives.

This is a dumb "punishment" as opposed to something that'll make things better for anybody. You should be working towards removing non-sexual crimes miscategorized by stupid laws from the sex offender registry. Fighting for rights is about making things better for everyone, not worse for the other side.

So if someone is actually raped by an affluent 18 year old and the 18 year old gets a "not guilty" verdict because of the wealth and access to superior legal representation, do they still have to get registered? Or would it be a separate case of a counter suit?

I feel like this could be used very wrongly. I get that false accusations are bad, but they are fringe cases. The only reason they seem so prevalent is because they illicit strong emotions so reporting them is profitable for news organizations.

This is a pretty bad idea. There are tons of reported rapes that never end in conviction due to lack of evidence, how would you determine if someone is lieing about being raped or there isnt enough evidence to support the rape claim? Do you also think that women who lied about a rape are going to come fourth and admit their wrong doing if it means even greater social/economical/legal issues? Its a bad idea.
