I agree totally. Let's prevent women from reading any of those text books written by men, or instruction manuals, or web sites... let's all go back to a time where women only learned useful skills from their mothers.. things like cooking and cleaning.... /s

feminism: working actively towards the absolute polar opposite of its stated aims

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link

Islamic countries did them one better ... in some Muslim countries it is a capital crime to teach a woman to read anything ... so she couldn't possibly read anything written by a man.

Wait ... isn't the Koran written by a man. Mohammed, as directed by Allah, wrote the Koran ... so no muslem woman would be able to read that book.

[–]Yuo_cna_Raed_Tihs 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Muslims believe that the angle Gabriel told Mohammed the quran, piece by piece, and that he memorised it and preached it. Thats why the Koran took 23 years to be complete. All of Mohammed's followers memorised the koran, and then, after the death of Mohammed, Othman was worried that everyone else who had memorised the koran might die as well, so he was the first person to write it down.

Also pls tell me what muslims countries ban women from being literate. Not even saudi does this.

[–]chinawinsworlds 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Lol, implying that necrophiliac pedophile could even memorise two sentences... God, what bullshit that story is.

[–]Yuo_cna_Raed_Tihs 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Hang on. I too enjoy bashing shit for the sake of bashing it, but necrophilia is not a crime he was guilty was.

[–]chinawinsworlds 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

We should also keep them from listening to Mozart, Beethoven, or Bach...perhaps we should also keep them from looking at art by Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh....maybe also keep them from learning about science/discoveries by men like learning about Calculus, Theory of Relativity, or....

[–]Rethgil 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's actually kind of what Curie did! She didn't know what she was dealing with at first with and by the time she figured it out she had irradiated herself. Ironic but true.

[–]zadtheinhaler 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The difference being Curie contributed positively to humanities collective knowledge, whereas OP's snowflake feminist does not.

The notion that a woman reading, for example, Mark Twain, Joseph Conrad or George Orwell cannot relate to anything that happens in those books because the writers all had penis and testes as genitalia is so preposterous, so bigoted, so intensely and cretinously stupid that it beggar's belief that Moran [sic ; - )] could even deign to say something this fucking idiotic.

Frida Kahlo adored, and learned from, Diego Rivera - and in my opinion, she exceeded him in talent; Victorine Meurent learnt how to paint from Eduard Manet; Artemisia Gentileschi learnt how to paint from her own father whose workshop she joined; Meret Oppenheim learned not only from Man Ray, but from all the artists and thinkers - including Sartre, that she hung out with.

Mary bloody Wollstonecraft, author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, hailed as a feminist hero(ine), married the philosopher/anarchist William Godwin and together they had a daughter who grew to be Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, and friend to Shelley (obviously) and Byron.

The idea that women artists need only read works by women, see plays by women, look at art made by women is quite literally following in the footsteps of Nazi ideologists who insisted that there could be no value in works by Jewish artists or accomplishments by non-Aryans.

What a colossal ass Moran has made of herself saying this putrid shit.

[–]Rethgil 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Could be mistaken but didn't Moran try to kill herself at one point and/or was diagnosed with a serious mental health condition? This would all make her the archetypal feminist....

[–]William__F0ster 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

didn't Moran try to kill herself at one point

Not that I'm aware of ... and I confess I read (my sister-in-law's) copy of How to be a Woman and don't remember anything like that.

diagnosed with a serious mental health condition

I think she lists depression as one of her issues, yes. Although it seems to date back to her teenage years so ... sounds normal?

So they will reprint Newton's research in a press owned by a womyn, in pink colored covers, rename Newton to show why he had long feminine hairs and he was gender fluid, etc. Possibilities endless. /s

Nice! Waiting for the movie bio though where they tell us he couldn't have done anything without his feminist wife. They've tried this with everything else.

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points37 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I had a political science professor that wouldn't assign any readings written by males. She also hated any words that had male influence like; "seminal" as in the "seminal works of Joan Smith". She would constantly attack male students for answering questions and refer to it as "mansplaining" and other things. At this same university there is a feminist professor that wont allow males to speak in her class because men are "too privileged". she unveiled her new rule at a feminist forum at Dalhousie university and was met with a standing ovation and was celebrated.

[–]Hiruis 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

How can this even be legal? Sue the hell out of that school.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I honestly don't know if it is legal, I can imagine if the roles were reversed the professor would have been fired.

[–]kutuup1989 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's absolutely not legal. You cannot discriminate between students based on gender, ethnicity, nor anything else for that matter. The only thing you CAN discriminate based on, in terms of the time you devote to helping each student, is attendance levels where there are not mitigating factors. This was one of the first things covered when I started as a lecturer, because it's a legal issue and the university risks being sued if a student thinks you're discriminating against them.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Any idea how I would go about tackling this issue and having her reported? the dean of the school didn't do anything.

[–]kutuup1989 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What did the dean of the school say when you reported it?

The best course of action if you are being denied time with the lecturer based on your gender or any other similar factor is to put in a request for your tuition fees to be returned because the university is in breach of the trade descriptions act. That's if you're in the UK, I don't know whether other countries have equivalent laws. The transaction between the university and you is that the university will provide tuition in return for your money. If they took your money then refused to provide tuition equal to what your classmates received, then their advertisement offering tuition for money was false.

The best case for the university is that they have to return your tuition money and you leave. The worst case is that other students lodge the same legal challenge to recoup their tuition fees and the course or university has to close.

The most likely outcome is the former, though.

At any rate, it is NOT the place of a lecturer to decide who is or is not "worthy" of tuition. They're paid to provide tuition. It does not matter one bit what the lecturer's political views are, if they are not doing everything in their power to offer equal tuition wherever possible to all students, and said discrimination was not advertised as a feature of the course, they are guilty of false advertising, and they owe you your money back.

A lecturer is there to teach you about a topic, or teach you how to perform a task. They are NOT there to arbitrate your morality or indoctrinate you to their way of thinking or their ideals.

I would strongly suggest filing a request to leave the university and have your fees returned as a result of the university's failure to provide the tuition promised in return for your money. If this is refused, then the next escalation depends on the country you're in. In the UK, the next level is to contact your representative in parliament (ie. your MP) and make a direct complaint against the university. In Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the system is similar as far as I understand it, in that your MP is the next level up and is duty-bound to escalate your problem with the relevant authorities. In the UK, that authority is the education minister. In the US, I would guess, not being fully aware of the US governance system, that the congress member for your area is the person to go to, as they will likely have the authority to call for action to be taken by whomever is responsible for education in your area.

In any case, if the university refuses to return your fees, then you will likely have to go through the courts of your country to recoup them. In that case, the university will have to justify their position and explain why they should not have to return your fees.

Under any legal system I know of, "he's a man" is not a valid reason to offer substandard services, and a university is ultimately a service.

You have a good chance of winning if it goes to court, and the university will know this. If they have any sense, they will back down before it reaches that point, and the lecturer's positions will be seen as a liability. The likelihood in that case is that they will be dismissed.

This fucking sub is becoming an anti women circle jerk.

[+]OhTheThrow_away points 9 years ago* [recovered] (9 children) | Copy Link

Why would you think that? None of the above comments are "anti-woman" if anything, the original statement is.

All that's done here is that it is explored what exactly the consequence would be of following the original authors demands/advice. And here, this notion has quite expertly taken the piss out of. It would force women back to where they were ~100-200 years ago.

[–]Rethgil 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Don't feed the white knights/feminist lurker trolls.

[–]lordfoofoo -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

There are a ton of pretty decent female cookbooks, at least thats true for the UK. I'd say it was the males ones which alienated their audience. Suggesting the better ones are written by men, is only an opinion, it just comes across as slightly "anti-woman", when I could name at least 3-5 cookbooks which would suggest the opposite.

[+]OhTheThrow_away points 9 years ago* [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

So what? The general tone of the discussion made it clear that the entire conversation was in jest. One detail being debateable doesn't make the sub "anti women circlejerk".

[–]lordfoofoo 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I didn't say this sub is an "anti-women circlejerk". This sub is a hotbed of openmindedness for the most part. I was simply saying that suggest all the best cookbooks are written by men, whilst being an opinion, can come across as anti-women. That's not to say it is, but it can appear that way. I think at best its probably baseless hyperbole.

[+]OhTheThrow_away points 9 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

...whilst being an opinion, can come across as anti-women.

I wouldn't say so for a reasonable person, but w/e.

[–]lordfoofoo 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Aren't we trying to convince the unreasonable?

Edit: it was just really hyperbolic, as I said I can think of a ton of decent female cooks and chefs. To say all the best cookbooks are written by men, seems to me either tremendously ignorant or just a little bitter against women. But maybe I'm misconstruing something.

[–]Samantha_Cruz 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I am hardly 'anti-woman' - it seems pretty clear that the "sammich" comment is a joke; the entire premise of this thread is due to some retarded idea spouted by a feminist that tries to claim that women shouldn't be reading books written by men. That's absolutely stupid and I'm not about to let some nitwit dictate to me what i'm allowed to read. I can only hope that the suggestion by this woman is also a joke because i'm having a hard time believing anyone could be stupid enough to actually suggest what it sounds like she's suggesting.

Some of the best books ever written were written by men; why would we deny ourselves the best educational material available?

"not reading books by men" means "stem" careers (like mine) are totally out of the question because nearly every stem field textbook is authored by men; her 'brilliant suggestion' is a huge step backwards; it ranks slightly above "bringing the taliban in to kick us out of school entirely" on the scale of "anti women circle jerk" ideas...

[–]JamesRussellSr 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You're right about "algorithm" being derived from the name of the guy who created the concept, but "algebra" isn't based on anyone's name, at least not as far as I can find reference to. It appears to be based on the Arabic for "a coming together of parts" or similar.

Seriously, is 4chan running feminism now? It seems like so many of the recent things must have been deliberately created by skilled trolls.

A day where women don't go to work as a protest for how women should be taken more seriously at work? That's right up there with microwaving your iphone to charge it.

Don't read any books written by a man? You've just excluded basically every foundational text of education. Maybe the plan is to have sacrificial women read those books and rewrite them with insane feminist skews so that the commonfolk women can read them. Don't read listen to Newton, Sarah will tell you that things fall down because things are female and planetary patriarchial forces push them down.

While I agree with the Blog Post's general idea, let me highlight a part of the text that stood out for me:

Now is is true that there are distorted images of women—and sexist ones—in books written by men. Particularly in earlier times, women were seen as inferior, and that’s often reflected in literature.

When I faced the pique of dissolution and despair with today's contemporary stories, I lost myself in classical writing. And discovered, contrary to the Bloggers opinion, that long-lasting, reputable male authors of that century still believed women to be virtuous and peaceful compared to men.

William Golding stated his opinion, not in any book but from the horse's mouth himself, that women were SUPERIOR to men. William FUCKING Golding of all people, author of Lord Of The Flies. Elevating women to a higher stature.

What I also discovered: Virtue Signalling and "The Women Are Wonderful Effect" existed even in stories from the old days.

As long as women exist they will want to feel special and men will want to make them feel special, this is our nature and without it I think we would've gone extinct.

She isn't a feminist, that's just a euphemism - she's a misandrist and a bigot. She's what a modern progressive (anti-liberal) society produces, and deems socially acceptable.

Of course, a simple switch of context from men to 'black men' or 'women' would be met by her own calls, and those of her fellow progressives and employer, of 'a return to fascism' (an ideology many of them - progressives - championed in the 1920s).

Holy shit, no. I loved some of the same books she mentioned when I was a little girl... and I also loved books by men too. Even if her idea that men can't write for women was true, which it's not, the answer isn't to fucking shield girls from things that may be sexist or make them uncomfortable in literature. Books are supposed to develop your critical thinking. Let girls read the books they're drawn to. Ugh and there's so many fucking books with great female characters in them, why is she complaining??? When I was younger I read books by female authors but then I stopped because there was just too much sexism, feminism in them. Not in all of them but the likelihood of hostility was just too great. I might be wrong, but I have this theory that most women, at least the educated ones, look down on men as a group and when they express themselves freely it shows. (And these women think that men have the same attitude towards women and that misunderstanding is on of the driving forces behind Feminism.)

Following this same logic they shouldn't use any product created by a man...

for instance:

  • a man invented birth control pills; (Gregory Goodwin Pincus)

  • men invented the light bulb (Edison and Hiram Maxim and Joseph Swan)

  • a man invented the automobile (Karl Benz)

  • men invented the internet (several men really, The main names include Leonard Kleinrock who wrote the framework of what became Arpanet which evolved into the internet; Robert Metcalf, David Riggle, Mark Painter, Douglas Terry, Songnian Zhou, (Created BIND/DNS protocols) Yogel Dala, Carl Sunshine, Ray Tomlinson (created the SMTP protocol used for email), Tim Berners-Lee (Created the HTML protocol used for web design); all of which happened years before Al Gore, another male introduced a bill in congress to make Arpanet into what we know today as the Internet...

  • A Man invented the Cell Phone (Martin Cooper)

  • A man invented the first mass produced shoe (Jan Ernst Matzeliger invented the first machines to mass produce shoes; people were making hand made shoes before that and no-one knows who 'invented' the first hand made shoes; some have dated back to around 7000-8000 BCE)

  • A man invented computers (Charles Babbage)

  • A man invented the Telephone (Alexander Graham Bell is mostly credited, although Elisha Gray and Antonio Meucci may have beat him to it; regardless, all 3 are male...)

  • A Man invented Air conditioning (Willis Carrier, John Gorrie, John Hadley and even Benjamin Franklin were all instrumental in creating Air Conditioning)

  • A man invented the Generator; A device used to produce almost all electricity in use across the planet (Michael Faraday)

  • A Man invented the battery (Alessandro Volta)

  • A man invented the vibrator (Dr. Joseph Mortimer Granville who did NOT invent it for the purpose of treating "female hysteria" contrary to popular myth)

Men invented nearly all of the labor saving devices that made it possible for women to be able to spend less time as "homemakers".

  • Washing Machine (Alva Fisher)
  • Dryer (J Ross Moore)
  • Oven (Jordan Mott)
  • Irons (Henry Seeley)
  • Microwave (Percy Spencer)
  • Vacuum Cleaner (Daniel Hess and Hubert Cecil Booth)

The only major exception is:

  • The first Dishwasher was invented by a woman (Josephine Cochran)

and someone else already mentioned that the printing press was invented by men, so according to the logic set forth by this 'brilliant feminist' - women shouldn't read any books at all...

[–]RabbiDickButt 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think 90% of the people who commented read the article either. The quote the article pulls from is taken in partial context to embellish it as feminist hyperbole. I'm not a big fan of her thoughts regarding the issue, but it's obvious that the way people are commenting here suggest indifference towards actual context and more interest in jokes.

I always like to put things in perspective by gender reversal, as is commonly done in this sub. Basically if a male writer said boys should avoid reading literature from female authors who present boys as meathead lackwits until their self confidence were more established I doubt many people here would disagree.

I personally think it's an bloated premise as development of critical thought should be emphasized over indulging anecdotal beliefs of building self confidence.

[–]poorpersonality 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If boys didn't read books by female authors, there would be less anti-Feminists. Unfortunately boys seldom read them so they grow up idolizing women instead of learning a more truthful picture of women and the society.

[–]RabbiDickButt 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If men idolize women it probably has more to do with biological drive rather than literature. If there is a "truthful" picture of women and the society it's that it changes from women to women and the society to the society.

[–]matthew_lane 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry, I'm going to have to disagree. The only book I've read from her is "How to Build a Girl" & I didn't even get all the way thru it, I found it that stilted & boring.

[+]moral_contraceptive points 9 years ago [recovered] (7 children) | Copy Link

I understand her point differently than the top comments here. It's not, in meaning, about avoiding men (hear me out) as much as it's about gaining an understanding of what it is to be female from females. I think it is a credible point: women don't see themselves in the women they see portrayed in much (not all) of media, new or old. Moran is suggesting that a diet of strong female representation early on (not forever) can build confident, self-possessed young women. Male authors and screenwriters have an inherently male viewpoint that just doesn't do for girls what it does for boys. I wouldn't suggest that female authors could do for boys what male authors do. I'll add that I think the goal is to 'build' women that are in fact less likely to bully men in order to find their strength, character, and personal responsibility - at least that is my hope. It's a hope for mutual respect that starts with each person working on their own shit - her argument is about building a girl's self image based on female perspective.

[–]poorpersonality 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And Aryans shouldn't read Jewish books nor enjoy Jewish art in general.

Male authors don't hate women and girls as a group, though Feminists try to tell young girls otherwise.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't think u/moral-contraceptive was saying that male authors hate women. I think what he/she is trying to say is that the average woman knows the experiences of the average woman better than the average man, which I think is true. The followup to that point is that young children (who are struggling to find some kind of guidance and kinship) might connect more with stories and art geared towards them.

[–]zvon666 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

...and cut off all male-produced art? Specifically, books, but do you mind telling me what the fuck?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

That's where my opinion and Moran's diverge.

EDIT: I don't know if I was able to properly say what I wanted to say. I think people should read books they can identify with to help them understand themselves and books they can't identify with to help them understand other people. I made the above statements while I was very tired, I'm sorry if I mislead you.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'll add that I think the goal is to 'build' women that are in fact less likely to bully men in order to find their strength, character, and personal responsibility

Most stories written by females, the ones with the heavy feminist slant, do the exact opposite: Present males as below the female protagonists and doormats for when the female protagonist feels the need to vent her frustrations towards the opposite sex (emotionally AND physically I might add). Those without male characters, there's always an implied slight towards men as group inserted in there, whether through dialogue or descriptors.

[–]moral_contraceptive 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So then let's be selective of the female authorship and look for female protagonists that don't do this because this is more of the same shit. Girls need to see female characters as they are rather than how they relate to men; a sort of bechdel test to simply stand on her own feet as a character.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So then let's be selective of the female authorship and look for female protagonists that don't do this because this is more of the same shit.

Good luck with that. Personally, I haven't seen female authors willing to tell a story without it devolving into female favoritism and special treatment (along with unnecessary abuse to the male characters). The only exception I've found is The Hunger Games trilogy.

a sort of bechdel test

The Bechdel Test was a joke, not meant to be taken seriously. Unfortunately, feminism missed the joke completely. I'd prefer it never used as a measuring yard for good literature. For good ANYTHING, period.

to simply stand on her own feet as a character.

Let me ask you a question regarding seeing female characters as they are rather than how they relate to men:

What if, perish the thought, their characters are dignified, independent and densely layered even when they ARE relating to men? Do they fail the test?

Again, I go from what I read but male authors tend to retain these in their female characters even when said female is relating to men. Who cares if they miss some of the nuances of what it's like being a woman? Female authors miss the nuances of being a man yet nobody will point this out unless they want their reputation sullied.

When speakers for Men's issues are silenced by radical feminists willing to pull fire alarms and protest our right to assemble, then we have to tackle the blockade before we can speak at the podium.

But why are you here, if not to shit on Men's Rights? Are you doing anything proactive, for anyone besides yourself? Or are you just a hypocrite?

But why are you here, if not to shit on Men's Rights? Are you doing anything proactive, for anyone besides yourself? Or are you just a hypocrite?

Haha gotcha feminist.

Now let me continue to bitch ineffectually about feminists while ignoring real tangible men's rights issues that need some actual advocacy.

The mods put this on the sidebar:

Advocacy isn't just about what is popular - stay informed, keep up with r/MensRights by sorting by NEW.

Because nobody upvotes the actually issues you upvote memes bashing feminism and then wonder why everyone calls men's rights a toxic movement when you try to actually talk about male circumcision, a justice system biased against men or male domestic abuse victims being profiled as aggressors.

You hurt real change by corrupting real important social issues in this toxic movement, luckily this shitsub isn't the be all and end all for men's rights and there are actual groups out there willing to do something beyond primarily shitposting memes complaining about women and feminism.

[–]kutuup1989 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And you would consider "worthwhile change" to be women being encouraged to not read any books written by men? So...

No Shakespeare. No Darwin. No F Scott Fitzgerald. No J D Salinger. No Golding. No Chaucer. No religious texts. No Tolkien. Hell, very few scientific texts pre-1960.

How is this "worthwhile change" to you?

I want to see women be educated, I want to see women as aware and skilled as men. I take great pleasure in seeing that come to pass over the past decades. I want, and consider women to be my EQUALS. I am immensely pleased with the processes over the past decades that have made that so.

Yet now we have idiots like this suggesting that women shouldn't read books written by men? Suggesting that women put their gender before the opportunity to learn and be successful? That's beyond disgusting. The only people that kind of thought hurts is women.

Suggesting to people that they should put what genitals they have first and what they can learn from a text second based on the gender of the author is abhorrent.

That's why intelligent people don't take radical feminism seriously. It puts conflict and division first, progress be damned.

That kind of thinking is so insanely destructive to social equality, and it's repulsive. You want to talk about what's holding women back? It sure as shit isn't me. It's morons like this author telling women they should sacrifice their education because she doesn't like the genitals of the person who wrote texts on the curriculum.

SHE'S the barrier to equality, because SHE'S the one playing divide and conquer.

She's an abhorrent idiot, and THAT'S what makes me angry.

So, tell me, as an egalitarian, looking out for men's AND women's rights in equal measure, and I mean EQUAL measure, not some "worthwhile change" social justice warrior, lets dogpile white cis men insanity...

Am I wrong?
