Very well written. Like every Doritos commercial features a borderline retarded male being fooled by a child or an animal. If the roles were reversed there would be outrage.

Homer Simpson is essentially the epitomy of this.

[–]Planner_Hammish 27 points28 points29 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

He didn't start that way though. He evolved there over time. Just like Carman evolved into the sociopath after season five, instead of being a whiny entitled little bitch.

Home was a caring dad doing the best for his family. There was depth to his character that was list over time for cheap gags.

[–]AmberArmy 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

For example the episode in which we see Homer's "Do it for her" poster at his work desk.

[–]Planner_Hammish 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's a good example. The one I had in mind was Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire where Homer is trying his best to provide for his family despite having no money.

[–]slavik262 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Flanderization

[–]Threwaway42 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I feel like he started as a sociopath and now he is way too forgiving. The Cartman from Scott Tennorman must Die never would have let PC Principal away without a worse punishment this past season premiere.

[–]Planner_Hammish 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, season 19 is a bit weird. I feel like they are building to something awesome though, and that Carman is behind the while ad thing.

[–]dickseverywhere444 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Homer on Simpsons, Peter on family guy, Stan on American dad, fred flintstone and George jetson, and on and on. And that's me only thinking about it for a few seconds off the top of my head.

[–]Threwaway42 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I disagree with American Dad. Both Stan and Francene are geniuses in some aspects and morons in others

[–]btmims 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Jetsons and Flintstones have been around a lot longer than the rest. I feel like, if we went back and watched original Flintstones or Jetsons, we would see the men mainly being competent, with the occasional goof up. It's been awhile, but the thing that stuck the most in my mind from those cartoons was that the wives were always talking. Incessantly. On the phone with their neighbors, nagging their husbands, scolding the children... they never shut up.

[–]occupythekitchen 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Accurate portrayal if we use the women in my family as reference

[–]dickseverywhere444 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I knew he was borderline, but he's almost the opposite of the bumbling lazy idiot to the point it becomes a bad thing again.

[–]occupythekitchen -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's incredible the accuracy of jetson's wife taking his wallet and leaving him with nothing. Essentially the price it is to get a divorce nowdays

[–]Mikeavelli 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I don't quite agree with this...

Married with children, where both parents are failures at life?

Fresh Prince of Bel Air, where both parents are successful and good at parenting?

Family matters? Full house? same deal.

There were, and are, plenty of positive male role models on TV.

[–]Azothlike 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

None of the men in Full House were competent adult individuals. They were all overly flawed caricatures.

What you might call 'black sitcoms' were generally untouched by this trend. Whether that's because they didn't want to evoke Sambo-racism criticism or not, who knows. That doesn't change the strong, large trend in all other sitcoms of the era.

  • Seinfeld. 2/3 guys are completely incompetent. 0/1 girls are.
  • Friends. 3/3 guys are completely incompetent. 1/3 girls are.
  • Frasier. 2/3 guys are, at the least, socially incompetent. 0/1 girls are.
  • Home Improvement. 1/3 men are incompetent, if you count supporting actors Al and Wilson. 0/1 women are.
  • Everybody Loves Raymond. 1/1 men are incompetent, 0/1 women.

If your best evidence that leading actors in late 80s, 90s and2000s televisions were undeniably slanted towards 'men are idiots, women are wonderful', is that "in a couple of shows, they were both idiots, or both wonderful", you have a long way to go. By my count, you'd need about 10 shows where the woman was braindead and the man saved the day every episode, the inverse of what the rest of us watched through the 90s.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This shit goes back to at least the early 80's.

[–]Azothlike 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The 80s was a more mixed time. There were positive male role models, i.e. Knightrider, MacGyver, etc.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It started to pick up speed in the sitcoms. The men's based shows were still often unaffected.

[–]HeyZuesHChrist -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. There's no disputing that.

[–]L3SSTH4NTHR33 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Except when there are a lot of exceptions you can't really call it a rule. I'd say it's a definite trend, or a common trope, but it's by no means the only position males are forced into on television.

[–]kurrpt 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

don't forget that the success of a lot of these sitcoms is based on people's ability to relate to them. some things the men would fail at were all so true to A LOT of people.

[–]HeyZuesHChrist 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

While that may be true, do you know what works even better? Just take a look at Modern Family on ABC. That show has won award after award. Everybody on the show is an idiot. It's one of the reasons I really like the show. Nobody is exempt. It makes it even more funny than the cliche that men are fat and stupid and women are beautiful and smart.

[–]kurrpt 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

hey man that's great. consider modern family the modernization of sitcoms

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or maybe its just social engineering and people think its funny and they should laugh at it. Are there any shows where just the woman is a total fuck up in every way? What about one where all the white people are successful but the black guy is a total failure? Anything like that? So women and minorities cant relate to feeling like a failure? Statistically they fail more so they should be over represented if your theory was a conscious decision made by the studios. But the opposite is what we actually see. Its ridiculing men and Id say often white men, to advance a political agenda.

[–]occupythekitchen -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

My niece loves me more than her grandma or aunts I'll pick her up throw her around and she loves it. She'll be doing a crazy dance with her arm and I'll imitate her and she loves it. I look like an idiot doing it but damn does it not make her happy. Anyways the truth is people want to be perfect and notice the flaws in other.

I have some discrimination and this girl dared to call me out on it. I told her there are two types of people those who discriminate and those who lie. No one wants a smaller house or an old car or sit next to a person with leprosy. Discrimination is built into us as a form of survival. Hell I hate dogs that bark but I love ones that are playful as consequence I discriminate against small dogs and they me for being threatening to them.

[–]HeyZuesHChrist 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Is this some sort of copypasta?

[–]occupythekitchen -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'd be honored if it became one

[–]HeyZuesHChrist 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have no idea what you were trying to say in your comment then.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While every TV show these days depicts a female wife/gf/SO who picks up the slack for her incompetent husband/bf/SO. No one screams misandry.

[–]rogue780 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm not sure. I actually think a woman could fit in the Doritos commercials. Have you seen the Show Hole commercial that Amazon has? Here it is if you haven't seen it.

It paints a woman as a lazy, obsessed, superficially depressed, television addict and there hasn't been any outrage about it as far as I can tell.

[–]ratbacon 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Actually it just paints her as someone who watches TV who is sad when her show ends. I didn't get any of the other stuff you mentioned.

There are also male versions of that advert.

[–]rogue780 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess I read more into her burying her TV and being unable to leave the couch so long she was able to knit a thneed.

And there being male versions of the ad (haven't seen them btw) somehow negates there's a woman in this one?

[–]Dnile1000BC 135 points136 points137 points 10 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link

At this point it's safer for developers not to include any female characters in their games at all. The worst that can happen is that they'll be accused of not being inclusive. At least they won't be forced to spend money reworking things that feminists are offended by.

They can make a lot of noise - e.g Assassin's Creed, Witcher 3 but at least they won't get banned. (see GTA V).

[–]TheCheesy 125 points126 points127 points 10 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

I remember hearing about an uproar over being able to punch females in GTAV.

They made it a huge point and never bothered to consider that males can be punched as well.

[–]SporkTornado 87 points88 points89 points 10 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Not to mention that GTA requires you to kill hundreds of men in order to complete each game in the franchise. On the other hand, punching women in GTA is optional. In the entire GTA franchise the only time you are required to kill a woman is in GTA 3. In the beginning of GTA you and Catalina are robbing a bank together. She shoots you in the face and leaves you for dead. You must kill Catalina in the final mission in order to beat the game. That is the one and only time that you are required to kill a woman in the entire GTA franchise.

You gonna play a game that's two console generations old? Have fun

You cannot be serious.

Die Hard 5 makes total sense now!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (5 children) | Copy Link

No shit sherlock, and the titanic sinks too. Your comment implied* that playing an old console wasn't fun.

[–]flare561 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

He implied, you inferred.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

corrected.

[–]Azothlike 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If old consoles today were as fun as new consoles, today, new consoles wouldn't sell.

Most of the fun of old consoles is nostalgia.

[–]Electroverted 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Just like that guy implied he was picking up GTA 3? LOL...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think we're speaking at crossed purposes. I said you cannot be serious, because you said (or at least implied) that you cannot have fun playing on an old console.

/u/smokefrosting's comment was witty and recognisably humourous. We've only now clarified your comment was also a joke. Unless your comment was serious and you believe you cannot have fun on an old console, in which case you're an idiot.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was always pissed in zoo tycoon how only men could be eaten by sharks and lions but not women

[–]Lokimonoxide 33 points34 points35 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It doesn't make any sense. Imagine a VP at Rockstar came out and said, "We've revised the game. You can no longer punch women." Would the feminists cry victory? I don't think so, they'd complain against being inequal.

Damned if you do, and if you don't.

[–]Impacatus 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's basically what they did with Bully. I don't remember if anyone complained about that.

I have left reddit for Voat due to years of admin mismanagement and preferential treatment for certain subreddits and users holding certain political and ideological views.

The situation has gotten especially worse since the appointment of Ellen Pao as CEO, culminating in the seemingly unjustified firings of several valuable employees and bans on hundreds of vibrant communities on completely trumped-up charges.

The resignation of Ellen Pao and the appointment of Steve Huffman as CEO, despite initial hopes, has continued the same trend.

As an act of protest, I have chosen to add this exit message to all comments I've ever made on reddit.

Feminists don't want equality. That's the only logical conclusion.

[–]Mikeavelli 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You get into it deep enough, they eventually admit they just want GTA banned. The feminist bullshit is just a smokescreen.

Third wave feminists like Anita Sarkeesian are almost on par with Muslims: Any depiction of what they consider "sacred" is blasphemous.

[–]intensely_human 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I saw a news segment about how there was a scene where you interacted with a hooker, and then "afterward you have the option to run her over".

You've also got the option to drive away, hop on a jetski, and drive off into the ocean but they don't mention that. They make it sound like it's some choose-your-own adventure that said "To drive away peacefully, turn to page 23. To run over the hooker, turn to page 75"

[–]Dworgi 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In reality, it's more like: "you arrive at a door, turn to any or all of pages 1-500".

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They take for granted that men are disposable cannon fodder, so they don't even think about it.

[–]mycatatemyface 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

at least they won't get banned. (see GTA V)

I don't really follow that kind (or any kind i guess anymore) of gaming news. Can anyone enlighten me?

I had to look this up myself. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/gta-v-has-been-banned-from-australian-retailers-because-of-sexual-violence-petition/

[–]Electroverted 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd assume gta is banned in certain places because of violence towards women, but I'd like clarification too

Best advice I got for developing and creating 3d female characters was to learn that the breast and the pectoralis are two separate entities the former laid over the latter. Also the greatest variation between different kinds of breasts happen mostly on the lower hemisphere more so than the upper. Otherwise the nipple is generally centered on the breast (and a little to the outside).

That and learning the major differences between male and female facial features on a fundamental level.

I have a different angle on the same issue. Why are all of the enemies male? In every game, the people who get shot, beaten, crashed into or generally come to harm are male. This is because depicting violence against women is offensive but violence against men is entertainment. Although there are quite a few female central characters in games there are almost no female enemy. Despite that blatant sexism you will never see Sarkeesian complaining that there aren't enough female characters to shoot. But we all know Sarkeesian supports sexism.

[–]rottingchrist 17 points18 points19 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because boys and men can separate fantasy from reality. They don't think beating up a blob of pixels is going to encourage them to beat people up IRL.

Unlike some others who think that violence against those like themselves is encouraged by videogame "violence".

[–]Electroverted 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is prevalent in Hollywood too. I remember the sequel to 300 got some flack because the male protagonist was fighting a female villain.

[–]ayumuuu 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I agree about this in most games.... but in most Bethesda RPGs (Skyrim/Fallout) there's about an even amount of men and women you can fight.

[–]Impacatus 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

Maybe in Fallout 4. Fallout 3 had nowhere near an even number. Almost all the "bad guy" factions were all male or male-like, except for raiders, who were maybe 3/4 male.

Actually, I think if you really compared the ratio of male to female NPCs you were expected to kill in Fallout 4 you'd find a disbalance.

The others ones weren't made by Bethesda, so I'm not counting them, and I never really got into the Elder Scrolls series.

[–]2bf1x 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The Elder Scrolls games have a more even distribution. There are a lot of female bandits and such.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You've counted?

[–]Mikeavelli 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The random NPC generator was calibrated so that the gender based perks (deal more damage against men or deal more damage against women) were worthwhile no matter which one you picked.

[–]2bf1x 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

RPGs in general are pretty egalitarian in that regard.

This is because depicting violence against women is offensive but violence against men is entertainment.

Dead to Rights: Retribution has an achievement called Scrotality. You can look up how to get it if you haven't already figured it out. No game would ever be made that gave you an achievement for impaling women through the vagina 50 times. It would be condemned as obscene.

I've never heard of any massive outcry over this aspect of Dead to Rights: Retribution.

[–]A-voice_of_reason[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You should play the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series, it feels that there has been at least an attempt of making this feels more equal, Atlus really makes the male portrayal better. You ever have games like Strange Journey where the entire second half of the game's villains are women. :p

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

There are more male enemies yes, but I've faced female enemies all the time in games.

Bioshock series, Prototype, The Elder Scrolls...

List goes on.

[–]loddfavne 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The thing you can thinkg about is the female/male ratio in these games. It's usually a very low number. But, to attribute this to culture rather than instincts is a bit naive. Maybe male characteristics will be seen as more intimidating and more threatening? I think one of the big problem with gender-politics today is that they haven't read enough biology.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The first miniboss of Bioshock is a splicer called "Rose". She's fucking terrifying. Very nimble and sadistically sexual in nature.

In prototype the main antagonist is actually a virus but it's first host is a girl named Elizabeth Green. She takes the form of a giant tentacle.

Skyrim is magic based and the characters are just skins for code, brawniness irrelevant.

I think you're onto something with the male characteristics being more inherently threatening but there's more to it. Making a good female antagonist requires more effort: Rose was scarier as a woman but getting her actions and tone right was crucial. It would have been easier to just chuck a great big bezerker at me and call it a day.

Totally agree with your last sentence btw.

This is a good point, but I have to admit that I do feel more uncomfortable when I see female characters die. For instance I was watching some mortal kombat videos and I found myself getting a little more squeamish when fatalities were done to the women in those games as opposed to the men. I was actually kind of puzzled by my own reaction. Maybe it's just something that makes me a little uncomfortable because its just not a common thing in video games, but if I'm being affected even a little bit it must be like a 1000 needles to those crazies.

[–]brian5476 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]baskandpurr 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Sure, there are more examples of female enemy in the sense of being a significant antagonist. I was thinking more of the cannon fodder. All those forgettable grunts that make up the majority of characters in a game. The ones that you are really supposed to treat as utility objects. The Covenant, the Flood, Hellghast, Strog, Overwatch, Stormtroopers, whoever it is you're shooting in CoD, MoH, Battlefield and Arma.

[–]2bf1x 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If a game made half of the nameless mooks into women, I'm certain it would be called misogynistic because it trivialized those women's deaths and objectified them by reducing them to mere obstacles to be overcome.

[–]fuerve 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The new Assassin's Creed appears to have done exactly this. I was surprised to find I'm killing just as many women as men. Just ordinary sentries - lambs to the slaughter. Nothing more.

Why don't we ask why feminist art is so full of women drawing pictures of their own vaginas? Why don't they draw pictures of penises? Hey guys, let's start "MRA Frequency" to eliminate gender stereotypes in feminist art! /s

The thing about art is that if you don't like what the other guy is making, you should just make your own art. And since feminists complain about the lack of women in STEM fields, here is a perfect opportunity for them to start their very own feminist video game studio, hire all the likeminded feminist game developers they can find, and make all the feminist games that they want. Nobody's stopping them.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nobody's stopping them.

The market is stopping them, which is why they gnash their teeth and complain rather than create something.

The end goal is to shame society into liking the kinds of things they like. They are fucking despicable.

[–]dungone 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The market is not stopping them. There are plenty of VC's and crowd-funders who are stupid enough to buy into this whole "women in tech" movement to throw money at even the dumbest ideas so long as they are being made by women. Besides, no one is stopping feminists from buying these games, just as no one is stopping them from watching women's basketball.

[–]ChaosOpen 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

You know good and well feminist already have a canned response to this. As for the art "for centuries art was dominated by men, now that women are making their mark!"

STEM: "Women are scared of going into the "male dominated" STEM fields, which is why women don't pick it. It's the sexism that keeps them out!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

STEM: "Women are scared of going into the "male dominated" STEM fields, which is why women don't pick it. It's the sexism that keeps them out!

Computer Science bachelor here, can confirm that's bullshit, not that you didn't know that already. If anything, the very few girls that were my classmates (6 in a class of 60) received special treatment (by fellow male classmates) and were put on a pedestal.

[–]ChaosOpen 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, obviously it's completely untrue, but it's a canned lie. And even if it was true, that has never stopped women before. The citadel is coed because a girl got let in on accident and refused to leave, and instead fought the school to make it coed. And lets not forget medicine, if anything was sexism it would be the medical field circa 1960, back when men were doctors and women were nurses. Despite that, women make up a slight majority of graduating doctors. If women wanted to do it, history has shown that a "boys club" doesn't stop them.

Fact is women don't want to go into STEM fields, cut and dry. The same is true with gaming. Honestly, how many times have you seen people begin to worship and/or white knight someone when they find out she is a girl? Remilia is an example, she is the first pro female League of Legends player, and despite only really being good at one champion, she is worshiped online. She also avoids the spot-light because of all of the attention she instantly got.

As for the art "for centuries art was dominated by men, now that women are making their mark!"

Even if we accept that, what did those men draw/sculpt/paint when they dominated art? Often, it was the female form, because they found it beautiful. The fact that even female artists want to draw women says more about them than it does about men. It seems narcissistic to me.

Feminists are totally clueless about gender dynamics that influence people's perception of characters and stories. A male protagonist can't fight against a female because the audience will almost invariably see him as brutish, cowardly and so on. There's nothing to gain for a man by beating a woman ("of course he beat her, he's stronger") but a lot to lose if he fails ("how pathetic to be beaten by a girl"). The most frequent female psychosexual fantasy is powerful males fighting for them (it's the same in Twilight and Athlas Shrugged), and that requires more male characters than females. In times of conflict or hardship (which covers most video games) women are sheltered and protected while men take action. Etc.

There are TONS of reasons why most stories include more men than women, and that is fine for most of the female audience as well. Funnily enough in 6oodfella's latest video two lesbian feminists talk about how movies need more female protagonists and then both of them name movies led by males as their favorite movies. The cognitive dissonance and the hipocrisy are off the charts.

[–]Hamakua 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They would just argue if you pointed it out that those films are only their favorites because there aren't enough female leads so of course their favorites might probably have male leads.

[–]Foxtrot3100 26 points27 points28 points 10 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

I'd like to see an example of one such character filling that kind of role and inciting outrage before I'd call this a solid argument.

...Then again, I'm not sure if I can think of a counter-example. At least not in video games.

Off the top of my head, I can think of a few dopey or flawed female characters. Mostly in sitcoms. Rosanne, Carrie from King of Queens, etc. But they tend to be less dopey/flawed than their male counterparts. And they're less abused than they're male counterparts too.

Meg from Family is a good counter-example. Pretty much the most abused character on TV. I don't see any outrage over her.

[–]MonkeyCB 24 points25 points26 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Those characters are also from a pre-SJW era. There were female characters that although not abused, were seen as idiotic, see I love Lucy. But then again, if you google "I love Lucy sexist" these days, it's all patriarchy this, sexism that, and generally oppression Olympics.

[–]Wasuremaru 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In fairness, Ricky did seem to have a bit of an anger management issue, chasing Lucy around the house whenever she made a plan without consulting him.

I'd like to point to Pillars of Eternity as a game that manages to have female characters of essentially every variety, with a solid "fuck you" to anyone who has a problem with Pallegina, the female paladin in the game, being a classic 'lawful stupid' type who every other character rips on 24/7 (and who you can help be less of a lawful stupid goon if you want).

There's a ton of well written male and female characters. And you can kill all of them. And you will kill many of them.

I think it helps that it's an isometric game. It's harder when the characters are 3D and you see them suffering for their failures. In this game they are just little sprites who you smash into meaty chunks.

[–]apullin 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Not just a box for all female character, but all women in the real world, too. This is what I call the "Barbie Expectation", although I sure some more competent people have written more cogently about it: The expectation that women are to lead lives that are free of any sort of negativity, woe, strife, limitation, failure, adversity, or such thing that a regular person might experience in their life. Instead, the state of being a woman is to be constantly in a bubble of crystalline perfection, like a Barbie in her Barbie world.

This comes up all the time in causes that label themselves under the banner of feminism. It is total horseshoe theory in action: what it meant to be all about giving women liberty just reduces them back to a fantastical, fragile life.

I don't think this is "the reason" games lack female characters. It's because games have been marketed primarily to males. And even before games, heroic fiction has always had mostly male protagonists. That's gender roles at work - men are expected to be the heroes. It's not like game designers create their games specifically to avoid feminist outcry, if anything, the chilling effect from feminist nutsos is minimal.

However it's certainly a valid point that this is a double standard. If Galbrush existed, the Monkey Island developers would have come under fire from feminists, but no one gives a shit that Guybrush is treated badly.

Similarly, feminists called misogyny when GTA allows players to kills a woman character, but they don't give a shit when players brutally slaughter countless men. Same with Witcher 3 - a few women get killed and it's the worst thing ever but no mention of how main character Geralt can slaughter countless men.

[–]alclarkey 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Maybe it's also who your target market is. Men play the majority of video games with a "character" and if the character shares your gender it helps you to feel a part of the game's universe.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Except men don't give a shit. Men play Tomb Raider, and Bayonetta and make their characters girls in many games they're given a chance.

[–]alclarkey 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

They may not give a shit, but the marketing is still there. Just like I don't care that my Froot Loops have a silly bird on the box, I still eat em, despite the buffoonery. And frankly I would never play a game like Bayonetta, because the ridiculous proportions she has feels patronizing to me. I like my games to have some depth to them.

Edit: I played the first new Tomb raider because it was on sale, and didn't look like it was marketed to the smash-beer-cans-on-my-head crowd. And it was pretty good.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Just a total aside but I think it's almost comical the reaction you have in any call of duty game to getting shot (well basically any game but I'm picking on COD).

You sort of grunt a little bit and then there are like two heavy breaths and then it's over. You're running across a battlefield and some far-off m4 tags you in the shoulder and your response is "gyuh! hyeh ... hyeh ..." and then you're fine. (those are painful deep breath sounds)

On the one hand I don't want to make it all political because it's just a goddamned game. But it is an amazing example of how utterly the media can minimize war. All of the dying screams of all the hundreds of millions of men who've died in war, reduced to "hyuh .... hyuh ...".

And even if developers create female characters that are just as capable, proactive, and nuanced as the male characters, there's still a very good chance that they'll be dismissed as "men with boobs".

[–]corky_douglas 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While there is truth to the post, this is a more than just a black and white issue.

We can't ignore that the current market for video games is still very much weighted towards a male audience, and many consumers are more likely to identify or want to be a male character than female, or see male villains.

If catering to men is going to increase a profit margin, you can bet that many publishers will push for that.

[–]victoriasbitter 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with what the post is saying, but I think there's more to it than that.

In the early stages computer games were just equally as popular with men and women, but as they were yanked out of the electronics department and in to the gender-divided toy isles, marketers had to choose a target audience, and they ended up choosing boys.

From then on, video games were all about guns, war, cars, racing... you know, "boy stuff." Obviously, most of the characters are going to be male so the target audience could relate.

I completely agree that now it's very difficult to reintroduce female characters, because of the reasons posted.

[–]alexplex86 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists can't complain when a guy makes a game the way he wants.

If feminists want games the way they want then they just have to make the games for themselves. Why is that so hard to understand?

And this pertains to all media. If feminists don't like how women and men are portrayed in movies, why don't they make their own movies the way they want?

[–]grass_cutter 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is completely wrong. You'll find that the vast majority of video game characters (or comic book characters even) are male, even before the current PC era.

Why?

Simple. Most comic book writers/ video game makers are male.

But it's even more complex than that.

People are just more male-focused in general. Most of our leaders and human history involves males. Most of our villains and warriors and soldiers.

They did a study once where male dreams ... their nightime dreams ... contain about 70-90% male characters in general. Women? 50% male characters, more equitable of course.

Assuming 'dreams' are a precursor for your subconscious/ imagination, even a video game firm with 50% female staff (yeah RIGHT! lol) ... would have the women doing 50/50 and the males imagination 80/20, and you'd still ultimately have a 65/35 distribution of characters.

THAT -- not some silly PC society nonsense.

[–]Dalinair 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Femenists imo have very little to whinge about these days (not that it stops them), games developers are putting loads of effort into having more female leads in games with both the main character sense (lara type character) or just in making the lead neither sex to a point where both works (mass effect, fallout 4 etc) hell assasin's creed syndicate had both and I much prefered the female character.

The rest of the games that come out these days are all re-hashes of old titles where characters are established already so cant be altered but in many of these cases there are very strong females that join the cast along with them.

Still, much of the OP's image is true.

That is certainly a major factor, as it is with movies and television, when shitty things happen to men, they either laugh or don't feel too bad about it. When shitty things happen to women, it's a world-ending tragedy that women need a safe-space from.

But, going beyond that, it would still make more sense to see more male protagonists in video games. A lot of video games are violent and action based, and it just makes more sense to have a male protagonist in these scenarios. Men historically recognized as the fighter/warriors. People are familiar with men fighting, because they have predominantly been the ones expected to do so throughout history, and because they are recognized as being physically stronger, faster and more adept than women. Not only that but, if you were to include gender expectations into it as well, most people expect men to be strong and competent, otherwise they are not considered to be "real men". That is an attitude that women reinforce a lot more than men, and that is prevalent in our culture because of it. Even most female romance novels feature a strong and dashing hero, generally taking charge or rescuing a princess. Women wouldn't want a game with a weak male protagonist, nor would people really identify with a game where a strong female protagonist risks her life to save the life of a man they would already consider to be entirely expendable in the first place.

Going beyond that still, it would still make sense for a lot of video game characters to be male, because video games are an art form created skills that most women would consider to be boring, unattractive and disdainful. It makes sense to see more men as protagonists, when you consider that most programmers, developers and story-tellers have historically been male as well. Those men are creating their own stories. It is their medium through which they can tell stories they want to tell. It would make sense that they would more often than not fall back to characters that they want to relate to or that they would want to embody. Their stories are the result of their fantasies and imaginations. A lot of those will feature women but male protagonists are probably what comes most naturally to them. And women have all the power in the world to change this. They have all the opportunities and incentives to pursue careers in programming, computer science, story-telling and game development. Most, however, don't. If feminists really wanted to change this, they would put in a little more effort into making their own games and getting computer science degrees.

Going beyond that still, it would still make sense to have more male protagonists because the video game industry is still predominantly supported and beloved by male nerds. The vast majority of women still harbour some incredibly negative prejudices towards gaming, men who game and male nerdom in general. All throughout gaming history, the biggest titles who made the most money essentially featured a male protagonist or appealed to those gamers. Male gamers are generally more than happy to play a female protagonist anyway(it's generally female gamers who tend to be the most sexist when it comes to their character creation), so it's kind of a moot point, but the reality is that those games are still inherently marketed to the people who will buy them. Most women do not care about gaming, and until that anti-male, anti-intellectualism and anti-nerd prejudice from women is actually address, no amount of over-feminisation will make a game sell more. If feminists would want to change this, they would be putting a lot more effort into addressing the general man-hating and nerd-hating(which is really just meek/unmasculine shaming) that is so prevalent amount women of all ages, and buy more games.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The vast majority of women still harbour some incredibly negative prejudices towards gaming, men who game and male nerdom in general.

That's part of the reason so many guys are still very hostile towards women in gaming/nerdom. Twenty years ago (and further into the past for that matter), gaming, tabletop RPGs, etc were sort of a refuge, a safe space for socially awkward guys. More often than not, they were bullied and ridiculed by everyone else, including girls, for their tastes. They were basically social outcasts. When gaming got more popular and being a nerd became "cool", the same people who once made their social lives hell now "invaded" their spaces and wanted to be treated as equals. It can be quite infuriating. I don't agree with being hostile towards newcomers but I completely understand the reasoning behind it and I don't really blame them.

If feminists would want to change this, they would be putting a lot more effort into addressing the general man-hating and nerd-hating(which is really just meek/unmasculine shaming) that is so prevalent amount women of all ages, and buy more games.

That's my main beef with all of that "criticism" coming from feminists and "media critics": they want to come and demand changes to something already established way before their whining, instead of actually putting some effort in making something that pleases them. I guess that would be impossible though, because they need things to complain about to stay relevant.

they want to come and demand changes to something already established way before their whining, instead of actually putting some effort in making something that pleases them.

It's infuriating because it comes of as a mix of incompetence and absolute entitlement, and because it directly stems from misandry as well. No other medium would you really have this. If men started drawing/writing things they liked, and women disliked what it because men liked it, that would be considered a form of bigotry. If women then demanded that men stopped drawing/writing things they wanted to draw/write about, and demanded that they drew/wrote about shit that interested them instead, society would tell those women to fuck off. Artists and writes aren't your bitch, if you want a story that specifically caters to you, write your own damn literature or draw the shit you want to draw.

And, yet, here we have feminists doing exactly that. They are essentially demanding content that suits their whims, specifically because they don't want, or can't be bothered with, making content of their own(predominantly, because of that very same negative/prejudiced attitude that they have against gaming or anything nerd, or because they are so negatively adversed to male gamers in general). Could you imagine a guy going into a dance studio composed of a very high female majority and then that man going "Dancing is gay as fuck, and I don't like your dancing either, I want to see more stripping and heavy metal!". People would tell him to get the fuck out, or go start your own studio. And yet, the gaming industry caves to these misandric and entitled women because they are so craven and desperate for female approval. It's pathetic.

And honestly, it's like feminists believe that women in general, or feminists, are collectively too incompetent to create their own content, and that is in part what is driving demands and entitlements for content that personally suit their taste. They want all the perks of the highest supporters and consumers, without the passion and money to back it up.

Women wouldn't want a game with a weak male protagonist, nor would people really identify with a game where a strong female protagonist risks her life to save the life of a man they would already consider to be entirely expendable in the first place.

Damn, would I love to see stories of strong women protecting men. "Men are intimidated by strong women!" is bullshit. It's just that more often than not, a strong woman's strength gets used against men. I say bring on the female knight saving the prince.

[–]ExpendableOne 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There would probably be more men who are into that kind of "reverse" power fantasy than women, because they would essentially see themselves as worth rescuing and identify with both characters. Realistically though, we as a society have always viewed men as expendable, so it would be a lot harder to make a relatable story out of it(especially given male gender roles are still fully embraced against weak/meek men and that misandry is still prevalent within our culture). Unless it's rescuing a boy, most women would probably see this scenario as generally unappealing(I don't really know a lot of women out there who would glorify the idea of risking their lives for the safety and wellbeing of a man).

Also, Guybrush being abused, rejected, and shunned can and will be played for laughs, without regard to how much suffering that kind of treatment inflicts on a person. Galbrush, on the other hand, would be expected to receive empathy and compassion from the audience. Female suffering is never played for laughs.

[–]Ricwulf 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Female suffering is never played for laughs.

You know what, I'm going to suggest an exception to that. Female protagonist/good-side suffering is never played for laughs.

Villain women however? Sometimes. It's rare, but occasionally it happens, although there is usually something that has been done prior to try and dehumanize the character before that point to try and remove empathy or distance being able to relate to the character.

[–]2bf1x 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's telling, though, that you have to make her a villain and put in a lot of effort to remove empathy before that happens. Women have to be knocked off a pedestal; men start in the dirt.

[–]Ricwulf 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, no argument from me there.

[–]angrypeon99 -4 points-3 points-2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You can display a male Guybrush like that without it being seen as all encompassing of men because there are a thousand other male characters who are the exact opposite. It’s pretty simple.

[–]hashtagwindbag 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

By that logic we should be able to get away with the mom character in a sitcom being a complete buffoon while the dad always comes through in the end with a poignant-yet-comedically-delivered solution to all the problems she's caused.

There have been thousands of others who are the exact opposite!

[–]bufedad 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So, could you explain the pushback against these types of female characters in sitcoms? Especially since there are so many female characters who are the exact opposite?

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Whod really want to play a game where you spawn with everything there is to offer already and then sit on the couch? Thats life as a woman.

[+]red_rock -14 points-13 points-12 points 10 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

I think in some cases this is true. But in most cases it´s not. If you crafted a story where it only makes sense to have a man, then yes. Buy all means. Like the Witcher series, it´s based of a book about a man. No reason to change that. Fallout 4 is a perfect example where it does work! Changing the story to a girl where her husband dies and her kid get´s kidnapped works. The same for the mass effect series. And I think Monkey Island is actually a good example of a good female characters. His girlfriend for example is a take charge kind of gal and is a Pirate captain in a time where women where considered bad luck to even have on a ship.

But there is a lack of games where we have good female main characters, and while it was not obvious back in the day that Super Mario could have had a sister instead, it is now.

In-fact, Japanese games in general are horrendously bad a portraying women.

[–]scurr 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That was part of his point, the females in games have to be a part of the ideal female character standard which includes being a strong and independent woman.

[–]red_rock -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know. That´s why I started of with "I think in some cases this is true".

Seems like they are getting more and more aware about it. Not shipping a game because they know it´s to sexism for the western world, I guess is a step forward?

[–]lord_addictus 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not shipping a game because they know it´s to sexism for the western world, I guess is a step forward?

How exactly is that a step forward?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think that was sarcasm.

[–]lord_addictus 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Look at the rest of the guy's comments; I'm not sure that it was.

[–]Green_Toe 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I figure it as a huge leap backwards

[–]red_rock 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So shipping a game they know would be perceived sexist is better then not shipping it?

[+]geniice -26 points-25 points-24 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Err no. Heavy gender bias existed before anyone was doing any real social critique of computer games. Additionally if they claim was true we would see a lot more robots and aliens.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 26 points27 points28 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well there is also a reason by most protagonists in romance novels are female: good ol knowing your audience.

[–]Whisper 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

And another one:

People write stories about people like them. In all the old Godzilla movies, the monsters attacked Tokyo, not Novia Scotia or Rio de Janeiro.

Video games are man stories, told by men, for men. Why? Because men are telling them.

Only a tiny minority of women have both the interest and the technical aptitude to assist in any material way with video game creation. This means their perspective tends not to loom large when a big budget dev company is inventing an original scenario to set a game in.

There may be more and more women who are interested enough in a male type of story that they are willing to play these kinds of games, but they can't reasonably expect to be catered to any time in the near future.

Not why?

Because no matter what business you are in, pissing off the people who buy your product, in order to appease people who don't, is pants-on-head retarded, that's why not.

Make a sexy heroine in a skin-tight uniform, and you'll piss off Anita Sarkessian, but why would you care? She's not a gamer. She's not going to buy your product anyway.

[–]A-voice_of_reason[S] 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's more of "one of the reason", if anything.

[+]geniice -16 points-15 points-14 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Statistics still don't support it.

[–]Imosa1 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What statistics?

[–]Green_Toe 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I assure you that you'll find a much higher ration of female to male heroes in video games than you would in real life.

[–]coke501 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is true. So what was written isn't applicable to the past, or at least it's hardly so. But it sure as hell is for the present.

[–]Green_Toe 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

gender bias existed before anyone was doing any real social critique of computer games

Of course. It's called Biology.

[–]occupythekitchen -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why are the majority of men heroes and villains in movies and books. Because a woman being a hero or a villain is not as common. Bravery and honor is not something women are raised with as men are.

We feel duty to risk our life when the moment comes. I've heard many stories of men sacrificing themselves jumping on ied or grenades women not as much and when it is its to protect her child.
