I'm a hairdresser. Recently in my career I've been thinking about finding a new one. Yesterday i had a 9 year old girl in my chair who had hair down below her waist. It was so tangled it was almost matted. As I was brushing it out I kept looking at her face in the mirror to make sure I wasn't hurting her and told her to let me know if I was. She winced and I immediately apologized and said I would hold it better. Her mom and her tried telling me it was okay and not to worry about it as she is alot rougher with brushing her hair.

I told the girl I always want her to be able to speak up when someone is hurting her without worrying about hurting someones feelings. That I would be more hurt if I found out later that I'd hurt her and she didn't say anything so I could change what i was doing.

I hope she remembers that. Beauty should not be pain. That is so engrained in many of us. And that is not what I want our young girls to believe in.
