I am on a very necessary and so far very awesome dating thoughts hiatus. But my question is, what about guy friends? I don't have any, but the idea of having non-sexual, no stakes, male companionship or activity partners or just work buddies appeals. A guy who is nice but not a match for me from work who knows I am not interested in dating (let that one slip out!) and I are going for coffee to discuss a work issue. What is your stance on guy friendships? In a perfect world, it would be a nice thing.

*Update: We had a good meet up about the state of our company. I am leaving (they know) and he basically wanted my opinion on what he should do. It was a good talk. He lives near me. While he is single, he is younger and as some young women passed by I asked him if he did online dating and he said he did and had just been on a pretty good date. I asked if he’d texted her yet and he said he told her to text him, figuring he didn’t want to bother her if she was not interested. What the hell!?! I asked if she said she had fun and he said yes. I told him he needed to man up and text her! I am leaving this job, but it was a harmless meeting and I think I helped this clueless guy maybe find love . I was not thinking of this guy as a friend long term, but it got me thinking on the topic. Prolly gonna give up on the idea of male friends, but thought it was worth a discussion.

*Update 2: I see that a response of mine was disliked 30 times. I’m shook, you all. I have always tried to be an open, honest and helpful member of this group. I am here to teach and to learn. This post was me trying to learn something about how others viewed male friends. I certainly did not expect this level of negativity merely for opening a discussion. I’m going to be taking a break from here too for a while. Maybe FDS and I are not the match I thought. 30 dislikes is a lot. I hope I can return and feel like this is a safe space to explore and not just state what we all “know.” I think life, culture, patriarchy and our relationship to men is always in flux. For example, some cultures treat male-female friendships slightly differently. Or: it’s possible some (younger) men are changing already. I don’t KNOW that or even really think it, but we need to be open to asking, questioning, and answering all areas of dating and relationships respectfully. I don’t think this thread reflects that. The danger is we just become a closed discussion with a cult-like mindset, not a place dedicated to helping women.
