Fucking case in point a post on here linking over to the relationships thread where the “boyfriend “ doesn’t brush his teeth, shower, or clean and financially abuses his girlfriend with gifts (that she pays for) while she desperately tries to clean his apartment for him when she visits.

Advice to woman: Maybe he has depression? You should make a doctor's appointment for him, drive him, pay for it, and take care of him while he recovers from this trauma. You've been coddling him and this is pretty much all your fault
Advice to man: Wow, it sounds like she's really pushy and trying to force you to get married! You should definitely dump her, you deserve better.
[–][deleted] 145 points146 points147 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes exactly
Advice to women: you are jealous, overreacting and controlling. Change your attitude and conform to his expectations.
Advice to men: she is a b*tch who doesn't respect your selfish desires. Don't change, don't listen to her and if she continues, dump her.

This reminds me that I looked up a therapist for my ex. By myself. I almost booked him the first session. And he wanted me to be with him in his “emotional journey” oh god how stupid was I.

I think that was very loving of you. When your severely depressed it is a struggle to jump through the required hoops to get help. It sounds like he wasnt good for many reasons, but what you did was beautiful and I hope you aren't ashamed of it. Anyways, as women, it's hard to find our balance between enforcing boundaries and divine acts of care. My goal has always been to remain strong in both. One thing that helps me is to keep track of how capable I am at any given moment. If it will not take from me, I help. If it will set me back, I remember to choose to let that person go without my intervention. We cant help others with their oxygen tanks if we dont put ours on first. Goddess bless.

Thank you I guess. The poor guy has depression and anxiety and is so confused about his life in general. I founf him the therapist but then I couldn't be his confident. Like, he broke up with me because "he wasn't ready for a relationship" but I'm just not going to wait around for him. Probably he'll find someone else in the meantime and I'm going to look like a clown.

Women in deadbedrooms: My partner has porn induced ED, calls me ugly and disgusting, regularly vanishes in the bathroom to watch porn on his phone while I'm in the room. For the one time he wanted to have sex with me, he "accidentally" pushed his penis in the wrong hole without any preparation or consent, after which I felt violated and hurt.
Men in deadbedrooms: My partner has a serious illness/had an accident. We didn't have sex for two months, so I want an open relationship. Wait, I don't really want to take care of her, and will probably just leave her, even though she helped me with so much in my life.

I know this is satire but I actually see so many posts like this on the relationship subs. Women are conditioned to tolerate outrageous bullshit from men nowadays, to ignore the glaring bad and look for the little bits of good to cling to because pObOdY's NeRfEcT. What the hell happened? Women wasting their time making posts to ask a bunch of strangers if they're overreacting for being bothered by some shit that my grandma would have pushed my grandpa down a flight of stairs for. Women have gotten soft and men are having a field day with it.
I swear, the moment my life stopped being depressing and difficult was when I stopped looking for the good in people and started taking their actions at face value. Not everything is some deep issue to be philosophized about, interpreted, and forgiven. When someone acts like an asshole, it means they ARE one. Stop being so fucking understanding of pricks who treat you like shit.
[–]FluffandRaincloudsFDS Disciple178 points179 points180 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. I used to be morbidly fascinated/addicted to r/relationships but it depressed me majorly. It was straight men doing abhorrent stuff and making me believe the lie "this is all that's out there." 99% of those relationships need to break up, but yet you still have people saying "jUsT cOmMuNiCaTe" or "sAvE tHe ReLaTiOnSHiP bc everyone says 'break up!'" Nah fam, I'm good. Eff that noise. Even a drop of poison ruins a whole glass of water... same with relationships. Take. No. Shit.
[–]wowthispostissadFDS Newbie53 points54 points55 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Wow same. I stopped going there regularly because it was too depressing. Every other post was about a 20 something woman dating a 35 year old man who is a loser. And then they get abused and are confused as to what’s going on.
Women reading this in their 20s.... a man over 30 who is aiming for someone in their 20s is a predator. I have no issue with a 30 year old woman dating a 40 year old man. But it’s not the same as in your 20s.
[–]ms_monquisFDS Disciple67 points68 points69 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I started reading that sub, too, and also had to stop. I understand that things look different when you're standing in the middle of it, frog in a frying pan and all that, but my god, so much absolute horror followed by that meek little "I don't want to throw away [X years/months] what should I do?" Much/most of the advice seems to be "break up" even on little things, but it's too depressing to even watch the situations people have put themselves into to get to that point, *especially* as a single woman who demands more out of life.
[–]hoIds_up_sporkFDS Disciple16 points17 points18 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
people always criticize r/relationships for pulling the break up card too often, but i think that if you're at the point where you're asking for relationship advice from strangers on the internet something is very rotten in the state of denmark. i've seen multiple posts from young women asking them how to tell their boyfriend that he has to wipe after he shits and i'm just like...... REALLY?
[–]noavocadoshereFDS Newbie6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
the day i have to ask a community of people how to tell my boyfriend to wipe after he poops is the day i must've hit my head on a rock at the bottom, where my love life resides. ain't no man cuddling up next to me leaving streaks on my sheets, no ma'am.

I'm adding this to my list of great quotes!
I still look at the relationship subs sometimes and it's so depressing. I have to remind myself that the majority of people on reddit, especially the ones who push to salvage obviously horrible relationships, are very young and haven't had the life experience to know any better yet and have the added baggage of growing up in a society that teaches them to put themselves last and accept poor treatment.

I'm not so sure about the past being better - it was socially accepted to beat your wife. All my old relatives ladies have mentioned casually about being beaten at some point. Nowadays this problem is getting a bit better but it still needs work.
I think the conditioning comes from the older generation, that women should endure in the name of the family. The divorce rates show that more modern women don't agree with this anymore.
[–]CeriseNoireFDS Newbie13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It absolutely wasn't better. That claim was the reason I didn't upvote that post. I already had my finger on it😆 Please. None of the women in my family who existed before my mother's time even had the option to divorce. Nowhere to go. They all worked outside of the home and were forced to do all the child rearing, cooking and cleaning too. To not do that would be shameful for a woman. It's some fantasy and idk where it came from. Maybe if you come from a super well off, unusually progressive lineage. Not the reality for most women.
[–]throwawayneverminditFDS Disciple29 points30 points31 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

My grandma hit my grandad with a chair for saying her cooking was worse than my mum's. She also broke my dad's nose when he swung for her because she stood up for my mum while my dad was abusing her.
My great, great grandma beat her husband with a cast iron skillet around the head for beating her. She was about 4'11" and my grandad would constantly come home late drunk off his ass.
Great, great grandma kept telling him not to and one day he came home, super drunk, pissed off that she was telling him to stop and started beating her tiny self. She became meek and apologetic and he stopped. She waited until he passed out drunk...
She came upstairs with the heavy skillet, sat on his chest and beat him repeatedly around the head screaming "DON'T YOU EVER LAY A FUCKING FINGER ON ME EVER AGAIN!" He never did.
[–]riotous486saturnFDS Newbie12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Good for your grandma. My grandpa was an alcoholic too and that’s what the problem was. He kept getting my mom in mortal danger (my aunt and uncle weren’t born yet) and my grandma had ENOUGH because she had to get IVF to even HAVE my mom and my mom’s twin was a stillborn. When he drove home drunk YET again she pushed him down the stairs and told him to stay down there until he was ready to talk about divorce and he “shaped up” by giving her two more kids and they hated each other the ENTIRE time because “making it work” does ‘t work. I hate these stories. I hate that so many people laugh at them because it’s trash, but that’s the reality of marriages that “made it work” they just barely tolerated each other, didn’t even sleep in the same bed.

I swear, the moment my life stopped being depressing and difficult was when I stopped looking for the good in people and started taking their actions at face value.
Did you change your mindset like in a sudden moment or was it a process
I want to simplify my life in this way AMD a fatal flaw I always had was always looking for background information to learn the motivations and implications that may have affected that person.
It's a sickness. Help me kill it dead. What did u do
[–]nymphaetamineFDS Disciple8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Unfortunately it took ending up in a horrible relationship with an abusive, unfaithful, pornsick narcissist to kill off my excuse-making for shitty people. It was a gradual process that started a little before I met him, but that was the tipping point. I spent a year wondering why it didn't seem to bother him that his actions were hurting me and thinking if I could just explain my feelings better, he'd finally get why his behavior was wrong and start acting right. It finally hit home that unless a person is an actual child with a still-developing brain, they know exactly what the fuck they're doing. I stopped trying to explain things like empathy, responsibility, and loyalty to grown-ass men. They know right from wrong and they know what hurts you, they just don't care. They're going to do their wrong shit regardless of how you feel, nothing you say will change them, and you're just clowning yourself by staying and trying to look for grains of good to justify all the bad.
It's actually fine to try to learn about people's motivations and background, I do that as well just because I find psychology fascinating, but you have to stop letting that excuse their behavior. It doesn't matter if a guy had a bad childhood, has a mental illness, etc, it's not an excuse for them to mistreat you.
Stay in this sub, and I would also recommend reading as much as you can about narcissism. Even though not every shitty man IS one, I find that a lot of common fuckboy behaviors nowadays align with classic narcissistic behaviors and learning what to watch out for will help you immensely.

You nailed it 100%. This generation of young women are so conditioned, they don’t even realize that they are wearing items that were originally meant for stage and screen MAINLY.. ie. Full Wigs, eyelash extensions, extra long fingernail extensions and drag-queen-like facial contouring, dramatic eye makeup, etc. They’ve been low-key pornified without realizing it.
They’re literally transforming themselves (and destroying their self esteem), all to fulfill these lowlife, video game playing, couch creatures’ cumbrain fantasies.
Meanwhile these LVM can’t bare to shave, work out, or put on something besides tshirts, sneakers and jogging pants? And still don’t want to pay for dates? GTFO
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to pay for something and was scared by the appearance of the person behind the register. 😱 wig, nails, lashes.
Time for a change. Be yourself and work on what’s inside FIRST!

Amen sister! The problem is we are taught to look at the good. To me look at the bad and worst of someone and see if you can handle it!
Yup. I've been called negative and judgemental by a lot of people, criticized for not forgiving, but how many of those oh so forgiving people would still eat a sandwich if a bird pooped on it? What's that, you reject the whole thing because of one tiny bit of shit? Apply that standard to men, and even friends. Don't accept ANY shit!

I’ve noticed this too.
At first on Twitter I thought they were funny as far as bad dates on the extreme end of things, but it’s really become this entire, “y’all the bar is on the floor,” trope that’s so normalized I even started to view my negative dating experiences that way. Like, ha ha, this fucking loser just made an absolute idiot out of me, how quirky and ~relatable~ ha ha. Some of these women are (I think) trolling, but the amount that are both (a) serious and (b) believable is alarming.

Once you treat them they way they treat you, it becomes so much easier. And I mean it literally. Ghost them, tell them to calm down and that they’re being emotional. Tell them they aren’t made to be logical and that we don’t care about their careers- we only care how tall they are. Refer to them as boys and laugh at their anger. And watch them lose it. When they get a dose of their own medicine they can’t handle it- they break down. Literally my grandmother was saying today I would “wait” on a man (by that, she meant doing every little chore and thing for him) if I loved him. Her reasoning was that when you’re in love, you’ll be willing to do it. I told her no. There’s no way I’m gonna be some man’s mom lmao. I love her and respect her a lot. She’s been through three marriages and knows how men are. However, her perspective is still in the older mindset that that is “just the way men are”. It seems she thinks that you either have to be their mother and flesh light OR just don’t ever marry/date men again (which she’s doing now).

They are consistantly taught that you need a man in your life to be successful (because the ultimate purpose of a women is still considered in our society to be a wife and mother) so that they cling to any man that shows them the slightest interest...regardless of how fucking awful they are.
And because our society raises women to think that they so desperately need a man they will put up with all kinds of toxic, abusive bullshit...and these men continue with their awful behavior and treatment of women because the women they treat this way, tolerate their behavior and therefore they don't really see an issue with it.
So fucked up...
Society also likes to relegate women to low paying "women's work", so economic hardships often indirectly force women to stay in abusive/ life destroying relationships.

My Father tried to push my Mom out of a moving car when they were dating. She still married him. Damn! She needed this Sub!!!
[–]PrinnykinFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Are they still together? I hope she left him.
[–]samismyboyFDS Newbie8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Nope. About 25 years of physical, Mental and verbal abuse until he was finally arrested and forced into seeing a therapist. Since then its been mostly verbal abuse. They are still together 51 years later. They sleep on opposite sides of the house but they have been together for so long its now just habit. He also has colon cancer and without her retirement package he would lose his medical insurance and she would feel "guilty". About 5 years ago I quit telling her to get out and told her to stop calling me when he was awful to her again. She's never going to do it and he's never going to stop. The only good thing that came out of it is none of us kids married anyone like him, I can spot an abuser a mile away. My brother started acting just like him with the anger issues, his wife split from him and he immediately sought help and was able to save his marriage. But, one reason my marriage ended (among many) was that I am so afraid of conflict that we never communicated. I'm single now. have a good relationship with my ex for my kids and if I ever get involved again it will be on my terms with a HVM. Otherwise I'm a happy single mom.

*doormats in relationships
[–]thewetdog_FDS Disciple92 points93 points94 points 6 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link
The problem is women are socialized to be apologetic for men from the get go so it’s not about individual doormatting, it’s about our being conditioned to always negotiate and to always find a way to tolerate, a way to cope.

In my country women are taught the concept of "men can be strong but without us they're nothing" and "man can be the head, but it's the neck that moves it" meaning the neck is the woman.
[–]thewetdog_FDS Disciple14 points15 points16 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Are men taught the same?
[–]SearchLightsIncFDS Newbie39 points40 points41 points 6 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Who the fuck would take pride in being the neck??? 😂😂
[–]nebulaedustFDS Newbie8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Grey eminence ;) I'll leave pride to men, I prefer real power

But the neck isn't the brain???
[–]nebulaedustFDS Newbie4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
What's brain without blood being supplied to it? What's brain without spinal cord? Exactly.
[–]SearchLightsIncFDS Newbie10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
But what good is a neck without a brain??? What good is it being headless? This whole saying is some liberal feminist BS - Be both the neck and the brain, makes much more sense.
[–]WyvernCharmFDS Newbie10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I dont think its feminist at all. I think you can compare it to "behind every great man is a great woman". It's still patriarchal, but gives at least some level of balance, some level of achievement for the woman.
Also, sayings like this shouldnt be taken too literally. Thet are by nature metaphors/ similes. But of course, it is better to be a whole human, all by yourself. That's where I think the real damage is done in things like this, the idea that you aren't complete without a partner. Utter bullshit.

I hate how normalized violence against women is or how women continue to be in relationships for some form of stability, financial or otherwise. Girl needs to get independent and dump this psycho before he comes after her next.
