The type of male circumcision common today is not at all like the method Jews used to perform in antiquity.

The previous practice was called Brit Milah, which only removed a tiny piece of the foreskin. Often this ended up being nothing more than a nick on the penis, resulting in just a small scar. An example of this method of circumcision would be Michelangelo's statue of David. (Yes, there is an almost imperceptible circ scar line on his penis. To modern eyes, the statue looks uncut.)

After Roman Jews began to "hide their faith" by keeping their foreskin pulled over penis head, the procedure evolved to Brit Pariah which completely removes the penis' foreskin and frenulum... a "high and tight" circumcision.

When people say "circumcision has been done for thousands of years", they probably don't even realize much it has changed. The old Jewish rite of circumcision could be considered very similar to the Sunat method that Muslim families do to their daughters... just a small cut, a drop of blood, but leaving fully functioning genitalia.

The Catholic Church condones circumcision and most people in my area are Catholic.

I think you mean condemns. I think it's pretty clear that the Church condemns routine infant circumcision under the "Respect for bodily integrity" section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

Except when performed for strictly therapeutic medical reasons, directly intended amputations, mutilations, and sterilizations performed on innocent persons are against the moral law (p. 553)

Every medical organization in the world acknowledges that routine infant circumcision is "non-therapeutic", and it's indisputably an amputation that permanently removes healthy, normal, functional tissue and replaces it with a scar (mutilation), and that this is imposed on an innocent child without his consent.

So, I'm not sure where the debate is, as that seems quite straight-forward to me, but I suppose it would be nice if the Church would more explicitly condemn it by name because clearly a lot of Catholics are unaware of this.

As it turns out, to denigrate the Taliban at a scientific meeting is to court controversy. At the conclusion of my talk, I fell into a debate with another invited speaker, who seemed, at first glance, to be very well-positioned to reason effectively about the implications of science for our understanding of morality. In fact, this person has since been appointed to the President's Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues and is now one of only thirteen people who will advise President Obama on 'issues that may emerge from advances in biomedicine and related areas of science and technology' in order to ensure that 'scientific research, healthcare delivery, and technological innovation are conducted in an ethically responsible manner.' Here is a snippet of our conversation, more or less verbatim:

She: What makes you think that science will ever be able to say that forcing women to wear burqas is wrong?

Me: Because I think that right and wrong are a matter of increasing or decreasing well-being--and it is obvious that forcing half the population to live in cloth bags and beating or killing them if they refuse, is not a good strategy for maximizing human well-being.

She: But that's only your opinion.

Me: Okay... let's make it even simpler. What if we found a culture that ritually blinded every third child by literally plucking out his or her eyes at birth, would you then agree that we had found a culture that was needlessly diminishing human well-being?

She: It would depend on why they were doing it.

Me [slowly returning my eyebrows from the back of my head]: let's say they were doing it on the basis of religious superstition. In their scripture, God says, 'Every third must walk in darkness.'

She: Then you could never say that they were wrong.

Such opinions are not uncommon in the Ivory Tower. I was talking to a woman (it's hard not to feel that her gender makes her views all the more disconcerting) who had just delivered an entirely lucid lecture on some of the moral implications of recent advances in neuroscience. She was concerned that our intelligence services might one day use neuroimaging technology for the purposes of lie detection, which she considered a likely violation of cognitive liberty. She was especially exercised over rumors that our government might have exposed captured terrorists to aerosols containing the hormone oxytocin in an effort to make them more cooperative. Though she did not say it, I suspect that she would even have opposed subjecting these prisoners to the smell of freshly baked bread, which has been shown to have a similar effect. While listening to her talk, as yet unaware of her liberal views on compulsory veiling and ritual enucleation, I thought her slightly overcautious, but a basically sane and eloquent authority on scientific ethics. I confess that once we did speak, and I peered into the terrible gulf that separated us on these issues, I found that I could not utter another word to her. In fact, our conversation ended with my blindly enacting two neurological clichés: my jaw quite literally dropped open, and I spun on my heels before walking away.

Because a large portion of the US has their child circumcised and this would be big news if a child died this way.

I can take a photograph off the internet of a small boy with jet black hair and claim the child, whose parents were recently killed, was found in an abandoned cave full of bats and publish it to a Facebook page or a blog, but that does not make it real.

I'm trying to look at this logically. If anything, from the perspective of the hospital and the doctors involved, it would make more sense to hush up a senseless death from an unnecessary procedure that makes hospitals money than it does to keep quiet a death from actual surgery that is needed.

Even the "117 deaths a year" is misleading.

That number came from this "Lost Boys: An Estimate of U.S. Circumcision-Related Infant Deaths". The author is Dan Bollinger, whom is against circumcision.

The 117 is an estimate, but I can estimate it higher or lower as well. I now estimate it at 100. Wait... no, now I estimate it at 300 per year.

I never said it wasn't rape or anything like that, I'm pointing out that it is, by definition of the procedure, medical. Euthanasia is a medical procedure too, and some people who dislike it call it murder because they want to rule people up (murder being a specifically illegal killing). Circumcision is currently legal and hence can't fall under the legal definition of rape (at least with my understanding of law) but that's beside the point - I agree with you that it's a terrible thing to be forced on someone, especially when it has no benefits. Yes, it should be banned and people who still want to practice it in the face of the evidence that it's bad are terrible people. That's why I'm asking you to stop getting riled up and throwing around words like 'illegal' and 'rape'. It definitely is not illegal and it is arguably not rape.

Cutting healthy people is legal, plastic surgery is a thing.

I know fully well that FGM is illegal and I know that equality laws should make MGM illegal, but they aren't recognised as working like that by the people who enforce them. Under equality laws, affirmative action should be illegal - it isn't.

I've read the thread, it's a person putting evidence forward about why it should be illegal. I think the problem here is you misunderstanding law. If a procedure is recognised as legal but could be construed as illegal according to other laws, that doesn't make it illegal. Example (but in reverse) - slavery wasn't technically illegal in the U.K. until 2008, specifically because it wasn't a recognised state of being and hence it couldn't be illegal. However, anything that someone made a slave do would be illegal. This is the reverse (but hopefully helps explain) of the MGM argument. There is strong evidence (well, I'd say proof) that it should be illegal, but that doesn't make it actually illegal. The OP of that wasn't proving that it is illegal, otherwise it would be enforced. Hopefully this explains the situation, if not at least please stop using buzzwords to try and make things seem more extreme than they are. It is a terrible situation but it isn't going to be fixed by people misconstruing it as worse than it is.

You been glad has absolutely nothing to do with a kid dying. Hell, it could have been you, then you wouldn't be around to be glad or pissed off about it. Training? It doesn't matter. Medical professionals make mistakes all the time. The mother of one of my best friends was fobbed off by doctors for two years before being diagnosed with cancer, which killed her this year. Even under the best conditions with the best physicians, something can still go wrong. It's a risk that isn't worth it, particularly in the case of babies.

It's in no way a difficult procedure. If whoever is performing the procedure is well trained and careful, they won't ever mess it up. Also, the reason I commented was to show not everyone is against it. And it also couldn't have been me because my parents were smart enough to have someone do it who wouldn't result in killing me. I wasn't trying to piss people off and have them attack me. I'm subbed to this subreddit because I agree with most things posted here. I'm just sharing an opposing opinion.

You're talking nonsense. Humans are fallible by their nature no matter how well-trained they might be, and that's not even taking pure bad luck into consideration. I don't doubt that there are a lot of inept doctors who just scraped by, but if you subject your kid to a pointless procedure, on such a crucial body part, no less, there's the danger that something could go wrong.

Thats not what happens with males. The idea that male circumcision has medical benefits is based on the false cultural and religious belief that a male's foreskin has no value or function. Your statement that there are "no side effects as an adult" also reflects that bias. People in cultures that cut the genitals of children devalue the parts they cut off - a sort of circularity of reasoning. In cultures where that has not been inculcated into the populace, they see circumcision and arguments supporting it as barbaric and illogical. You cannot cut off a non-trivial part of someone's dick without losing non-trivial function. Every circumcision is a botch.

Don't think for a second that the "science" you point to supporting isn't tainted by culturally bias and methodological flaws.
