Let me just devil's advocate here for a second...

Louis CK caught a bunch of flack during the Daniel Tosh controversy for saying, "Feminists and comedians are natural enemies - feminists can't take a joke and comedians can't take criticism." (And for those keeping score, that's a double-burn on feminists for being both humorless and hyper-critical).

I really don't want MRAs to cultivate a reputation, like social justice warriors, for being shrill, humorless complainers who jump onto twitter at the first hint of controversy. Just because SNL took a shot at MRAs doesn't mean that we should get all butthurt about it.

The real problem with the sketch was that it flat out was not funny. And I don't mean, "Not funny because it hurt my feelings" or something; it just didn't get laughs. The audience alternately groaned and pity-laughed through the whole sketch.

Look on the bright side: SNL is talking about this topic. Sure, they came down against it, but that is the first step towards a serious public dialogue on the subject. Lots of people don't even realize these problems exist.

"To those who have found this community because of the SNL sketch, welcome. We are not interested in shutting down Planned Parenthoods. We advocate for equal pay for equal work. We are a community of men and women who exist because the simple idea that someone would advocate for the rights of men and boys is considered a the punchline to a joke in mainstream culture. Men receive harsher sentences for the same crime, have fewer parental rights, die much younger, receive less medical research, are more likely to commit suicide, are less likely to attend college or graduate high school... There are a lot of reasons that men and boys need advocacy. Please join the discussion.

EDIT: Actually, I'm making this post right now...

TL;DR - Rather than an SNL thread about being mad about the sketch, the post should have a message to welcome people who are coming to this reddit because of the sketch.

I get it that the sketch was a load of crap but don't let it get under your skin. If anything the critics of the Mens Rights movement, which apparently includes Lena Dunham who likely wrote that skit, are only hoping to irritate MRAs more so than push their views on the SNL audience.

It may very well backfire as people will Google Mens Rights Activist and find their way to places such as this subreddit. It will work the same way as when an anti-MRA circlejerk starts in one of the default subreddits. A lot of BS is thrown about and suddenly the subscription numbers to this subreddit jumps up.

Holy shit. I can't believe Mens Rights activism was actually mentioned on national television. That's incredible publicity, regardless of the way they portrayed it.

I'm looking forward to the writers of this sketch seeing just what the people they're trying to appeal to are like, though. SRSers/feminists, once they get over nodding in approval at the strawman MRA depiction, will then turn on the writers for their 'racist' portrayal of the latina woman, etc.

I'm not sure how they thought this sketch was a good idea though. Did they really think this would be funny? Bizarre.

Best to just let it go as a good idea can stand ridicule, it is all part of the 'first they ignore.. process.' I haven't seen it but it sounds like a strawman so what. I don't want to become humorless like the feminists, demand censorship like the feminists, comedy is mostly our friend as look at the funny memes that get produced. Exposure is what is important right now, we can deal with the strawmen on an individual basis.

I don't even know where to start the number of things they just did...

It was a skit involving a guy at a gathering with his wife and all her female coworkers.

They started the skit by having the guy reveal what his job is (men's rights activitist) and they had him act embarrassed about it by saying that "it's not a real job" and that it's a "grass roots movement".

They deliberately associated his being a virgin, being skinny, and being introverted with the people of mens rights.

They attacked him for "shutting down two planned parenthoods" with his mens rights group, suggesting that men's rights is about attacking women's rights? If you think about it, it is the exact opposite where feminist interests prevent victimized men from getting the help they need.

They had him say that his goal was to have all men making more money than women. I presume this is an attempt to construe our acknowledgement of the wage gap as artificial with wanting to make men better at the expense of women?

I was just appalled because the entire skit during this "comedy" program was a malicious attack on the mens rights movement and probably a successful one given how few people are aware of us.

If anyone can post the video of it I'd appreciate it.

Thanks a fucking lot SNL writers. SNL pokes fun at a lot of things, but this pushed the line.

SNL isn't exactly a shining beacon of feminist theory, and through its portrayals of women, I can see that many feminists would take issue with it. The skit actually sounds as though it's intentionally exaggerated to the point of sarcasm, but who really knows? I'm not worried about it. The show so rarely invites funny and talented people on it (the only funny hosts are former cast members like Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig), and it relies on weak punch lines and bad jokes about sex because stupid people find it hilarious. Honestly, it's like being insulted by a person half your size who can't even speak English properly.

We can't sit back and collectively groan about this, and we can't ignore it as "mainstream bullshit".

This can definitely be turned to our advantage if we can flood NBC and SNL with enough feedback.

No hate mail. No "bad words" that would allow feminists to discredit us. Factual corrections and a little strawman-burning, in sufficient numbers, is enough to make this a win for MRA's.

I don't think I've ever been so angry at an SNL skit before.

It's fine to disagree with supporting men if you believe they are more privileged, but to make activists sound downright evil is just plain dumb.

I blame Lena Dunham. She advertised herself as a feminist in one of SNL's promos this week.

I did not laugh once during that skit. It was pitiful and pathetic. It's pretty obvious Lena just put that skit on with some kind of pent up rage against Mens rights and to piss more people off than to make them laugh. That wasn't eye opening or insightful, just a blatant hate bashing roast, on national TV broadcasted to millions too.

Pretty fucked up. What happened to comedians like Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Will Ferrell? Molly Shannon, Sheri Oteri, Ana Gasteyer? They didn't need to write material to tailor to the host. They made real comedy that anyone can laugh at. Obviously the staff at SNL would rather build a show around their host for that target demographic, something they can hashtag and get women to tweet about. Total garbage.
