Ohhh, Ohh this is funny, she acted like she cared about men before and now it's backfiring badly on her because she didn't cater enough to the feminists. She's going to find out about the feminazi's soon enough once they go to town and start protesting places she visits or try to harass her on twitter.

Yeah, I don't blame you guys for not having sympathy for people like this who say such things, I've been the same way about John Oliver now. If you start ranting about white men and try to act as if they do all evil in the world you lose my respect a lot.

[–]bertreapot 44 points45 points46 points 10 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

i think after taking on her UN gig she has probably had a lot more contact with feminists, who obviously rail on about how evil men are nonstop. So to counter that, she provides some examples of men she knows IRL who, in fact, are not evil. Big mistake.

Now she is facing the backlash because she dared to counter the feminist narrative. It's also how her feminist detractors are using "white feminist" as a pejorative.

Let the feminists keep on splintering and alienating everyone. Not our loss.

[–]wanderer779 30 points31 points32 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

this is my take, the internet is the best thing that could have happened to us.

The white feminist thing was hilarious. You can tell these people have a heirarchy. Alright, you are a feminist, but you are still white so I can get you on that. If she was black they'd have probably gone after her for having money.

[–]zulu127 19 points20 points21 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

the internet is the best thing that could have happened to us.

That's why Anita S. and Zoe Q. went in front of the UN and Google ideas to try to push their internet censorship campaign. Can't have men openly discussing what's on their minds.

[–]mrstickman 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Wait, what? How did I miss that?

[–]Lurker_IV 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It has been bouncing around the web for the past week or so.

[–]mrstickman 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Holy crap.

[–]CountVonVague 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's gold, pure gold.

[–]RoboLegGaming 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, they can't recognise the one actual way that beople are legitimately priveliged: Class privelege. They would hate her for being straight, then for being cis.

[–]dangerousopinions 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"White feminist" is now a term being used to describe anyone who doesn't prostrate themselves for "women of colour". There is a dumb video about it. It's amazing to me though that nobody within the movement ever questions the validity of such things. They accept opinion as fact before the "authority" is even finished speaking. Its incredibly dogmatic.

[–]CountVonVague 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The mob mentality is so unbelievably strong nowadays since no-one wants to call Feminism the monolithic establishment it's become, instead always echoing the tried and true "you-do-you" mantra that allows no-one to take any responsibility for any others actions. The fracturing is taking place atm because the cognitive dissonance is reaching a peak and vast swaths of the mob are suddenly realizing how little they have in common with one another's views aside from a general sense of VAWG(ina).

[–]DavidByron2 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The real funny thing is that of course she didn't care about men. All she did was say that some men are feminists. Apparently just mentioning men in a "positive" context was enough to get the shit storm.

[–]RockFourFour 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think any decent person would lose respect for people when they out themselves as racists and sexists.

[–]dangerousopinions 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Are SJWs attackung Oliver now?

[–]Lethn 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No because he practically sided with them when he declared Anita Sarkeesian a victim of internet harassment and congratulated people who didn't experience it on having a white penis.

He pretty much declared himself an SJW at that point, I can only hope it was a joke and he was just ignorant about what he was saying.

[–]Elvick 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

lolnope, he's parroted the wage gap. And made it seem like it's stupid that people would suggest that having a child, and thus taking time off work, would result in lower overall pay.

Rather than something actually valid and a real factor in why women do earn less.

He's a shill. So was Jon Stewart. I wouldn't be surprised if his replacement is as well, but I won't be watching it.

[–]shinarit 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I just hope she does a Suey Park, turning around 180°. She said retarded things before, but she tried to remain rational (and failed). Soon she will realize that you can't win with these people using rationality.

[–]Bwhitty23 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I haven't watched John Oliver in about year now. Has he done full sjw? Is he seriously falling for this?

[–]Lethn 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It was on a segment about internet harassment and I'd say yes, that's what it seemed like. It's a piss take because it wasn't so long ago when he was on the daily show he was boasting about how you should always fact check your stuff when he was ranting about news journalists.

[–]wanderer779 -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

to be fair people like John Oliver are working under an employment agreement with an unwritten clause that their opinions can't go off the script. He is just a guy trying to make money. He either says this shit and gets paid, or he refuses and gets canned and they'll get someone else in there to say it instead. They aren't going to put a guy like Patrice O'Neal on these shows.

[–]dangerousopinions 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If there is anyone on T.v that is allowed to say what they want, it's Oliver. He's not forced to enter into identity politics and support the status quo. What you're saying is definitely true of news outlets because that kind of content is keeping them afloat, but Oliver is not a writer for The guardian.

[–]brokedown 155 points156 points157 points 10 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

It's always amusing to watch feminists eat their own. After the whole "it's up to men to solve women's problems" rant last year I'm having trouble feeling sorry for her.

[–]GoHoMoThrow 64 points65 points66 points 10 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Well, I mean of course. Remember the essence of her argument was this.

  • I watched my father hurt by patriarchal expectations of men
  • Because he wasn't able to be the touchy feely mommy with a penis that I wanted
  • Therefore that caused him pain because he was less of a parent to me than I deserved.

[–]HotZone_ 85 points86 points87 points 10 years ago* (18 children) | Copy Link

If memory serves she is dating the captain of the rugby team. So much for defying "traditional patriarchal hegemonic masculinity" ;)

[–]GoHoMoThrow 56 points57 points58 points 10 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Remember, choice feminism. When being a girly girl with traditional roles suits her, she'll follow them.

[–]EliCaaash 55 points56 points57 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

She's a member of the 1% who starred in one of the highest grossing franchises in history, and had her character rewritten from the source material to end up being more of a hero than the main protagonist and cries sexism because she had an issue with a school play once, that may or may not have been down to her sex (or her god-awful acting ability IDK?)

She should try being a low income male or female for a year, she'll learn that feminists usually quibble about the loose change when the real discrimination in society takes place between rich and poor. I would bet money that she has never unwillingly gone hungry a day in her life. Even without the acting money, her family are obviously loaded but she has absolutely zero idea how privileged she actually is.

None. Nada. Zip.

[–]Alzael 20 points21 points22 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Even without the acting money, her family are obviously loaded

Specifically she is the daughter of two Parisian upper tier lawyers.

But hey,it's not like they were billionaires or anything. She probably only ever had one summer home growing up.You don't know the hardship that entails.

[–]AliasSigma 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's like that one chart I occasionally see posted about how tumblr sees different things (race, sex, etc) contribute to your life and it was all about even. Then a reality one and everything but class is marginal.

[–]dangerousopinions 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Race in the U.S isn't marginal. However racial discrimination can be largely overcome with money, that's how powerful economics are. But I would not want to be a poor black man or latino in most of the U.S.

[–]AliasSigma 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess the idea is that very little can have power over money. The difference in education between a black man and a white man would be nothing compared to a rich man and a poor or even middle class man.

[–]_____Chris 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well said.

[–]_____Chris 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Best described as 'feminism of convenience'. It's been around in one form or another since the beginning of the movement.

[–]GoHoMoThrow 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

ALL feminism is "feminism of convenience".

[–]Alzael 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

To make it better she stated in an interview a couple of years ago that she would never date a British man again (though she has),only Americans. Her reason being that British men are too shy and hesitant.Whereas American men are bold and assertive and come right out and approach her to ask her out.

Because, you know,it's ok for men to be sensitive and caring. As long as you don't want to date her. Then fuck you, pussy,

[–]shevrolet 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep, because it's totally impossible for a man to be both outgoing and caring.

[–]REDDITCanSuckMyCOCK1 point 10 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Alpha fucks, beta bucks.

[–]FangornForest 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Pshhh... she dumped him like, months ago. Get with the times! gawl

[–]jimmybrite 27 points28 points29 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Holy shit, this is hilarious.

Watson later told an interviewer that the breakup was so difficult, she spent a week at a private facility in Canada—where residents are not allowed to speak—"to figure out how to be at home with myself."

Check your privilege shitlords.

[–]CountVonVague 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh my god that's too funny, like a non-buddhist retreat of silence.

[–]not_AtWorkRightNow 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh god, now this will be the next maternity leave issue that women can take whenever and that men will have to pay for.

[–]dungone 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Did she also eat a lot of Italian food and buy that dress she always wanted?

[–]blueoak9 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What ? Did she find out they were doing the same teammate?

[–]_olas 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And then if men do try to help 'the oppressed' they're berated for having savior complexes.

[–]GoHoMoThrow 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So much, this.

If we care about their problems, "damsel in distress", "savior complex". If we don't, it's "indifference to female issues" wah wah wah.

[–]jb_trp 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"it's up to men to solve women's problems"

It's almost like they are asking for... More patriarchy to help them gain equality.

[–]SilencingNarrative 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gee. It's almost as if emma is not being welcomed to the conversation by other feminists. Well. Emma, allow me to extend to you a formal invitation ...

[–]GoHoMoThrow 78 points79 points80 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Remember, the core tenet of feminism is that all men belong to the patriarchy, so as members of the oppressor class they can never understand the oppressed, vouch for them, speak for them or do anything meaningful except sit in the back, be quiet, do everything they're told, feel bad and guilty and sorry and give money and perks and reparations to people just for having vaginas.

She has broken a major, MAJOR commandment in the tenets of the feminist faith.

[–]jb_trp 31 points32 points33 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's almost like it's politically incorrect to be a man.

The more these feminists complain about stupid things like this, the less credible their movement becomes. It's enjoyable to sit back and watch them eat each other alive ("Why is Emma Watson such a white feminist?? WHAAAA! :( :( :( ").

I'm almost giddy that feminists are being scolded for being "white feminist." Any time you see a white college educated feminist complain about catcalling, just accuse them of being a white feminist. They should only care about black and Muslim women being catcalled. Any time they complain about the gender pay gap, just accuse them of only caring about white feminism. They should only care about the black female pay gap, those heartless privileged white women. Eventually it will only politically correct to voice the experiences of the most oppressed people in society (overweight Muslim lesbian black women who have been brutally gang raped by ivy league lacrosse teams and also have been kept out of STEM fields) and their social movement will implode.

[–]Blutarg 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly.

[–]DavidByron2 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Feminists love to eat their own.

[–]dashing_nash 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm waiting for one to eat their own fetus.

[–]CountVonVague 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i'm always reminded of the line from Lost in Space "Ew,They eat their Own!"

[–]Dunkcity239 20 points21 points22 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

What does "problematic" even mean?

[–]R50cent 49 points50 points51 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"This offends me but I have no objective reason as to why."

[–]5MC 17 points18 points19 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

SJW ideologies are a religion. When they say something is 'problematic', what they really mean is that it's 'sinful'.

[–]ImNotIntoPokemon 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is counter to the orthodox feminist narrative. To use the religion analogy, it is heretical.

[–]GTCtry_another 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of or relating to a problemat, which is the place you take your petty gripes to be laundered until they almost look like legitimate grievances.

[–]DavidByron2 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Attacked by feminists.

[–]dazed111 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

it means immoral

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 19 points20 points21 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is what you get when feminism isn't a monolith: everyone arguing that their feminism is the right one.

It's like a damn religion.

[–]xNOM 12 points13 points14 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not like. Is. It's like watching Sunnis vs. Shia, Catholic vs. Protestant.

[–]FFXIV_Machinist 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

hi can i talk to you today about Femitology?

[–]gruffbillygoat 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Electroverted 14 points15 points16 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Poor Emma, bouncing all over the place. First she wants men to be included in Feminism. Then she wants men to solve Feminism. Now she wants women to own up to their discriminations. Someone send her a #Meninist shirt!

[–]libbylibertarian 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

“The more I’ve spoken about feminism, the more I have realised that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop,” she said in the speech.

Emma Watson is not part of the 3rd wave. Clearly there are those who would like her to embrace the manhating, but she appears to be above the fray. Hopefully, she will stand her ground as the reproachment continues.

[–]rsresnor 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Her job in a nutshell is to make feminism appealing to men again. It's a real uphill battle considering the biggest obstacle to this is mainstream feminists themselves on social media.

[–]dangerousopinions 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminism has always been hateful toward men, this idea that third wave is exceptional is false. Its always been this way, it's just more institutionalized than ever and the worst of the rhetoric has entered the mainstream. But none of the opinions have actually gotten more radical.

[+]deadite_on_reddit 10 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

"Emma Watson's views shouldn't be considered feminism, anything that questions black women and seeks male approval is NOT feminism"

Wow.

[–]iandmlne 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know right? What does that make feminism then?

[–]scoorps 21 points22 points23 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is the same Emma Watson who said- in front of the fucking UN- that men don't need to be macho aggressive masculine males, but also confessed to some celebrity gossip rag that she'd probably not date British men because they were too reserved and quiet.

[–]amratheavenger -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Um people can have personal preference for the people they date. When did liking an out going person who shows confidence become a sin. As much as I don't like crazy feminist this is a real stretch in my opinion. Also when did being reserved and quiet mean not being macho. Any man can be reserved and shy yet still be macho. They aren't mutually exclusive.

This comment is the same bullshit that people pull all the time. I don't like certain black person. Then you must be a racist. No I just don't like them as a person. Nope you're racist. Same deal here. Men don't have to be some super hero ultra buff bad boy. But you like men who are outgoing and will approach you. Therefore you must think that all men have to be like that. Doesn't that sound like a bit of poor logic.

[–]scoorps 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't like certain black person. Then you must be a racist.

Except we're talking about an entire island of people, and we're talking about patterns of behavior, not race.

To say that it's OK for someone to be something and in the same breath say that such characteristics you would never actually be attracted to is contradictory. It's saying, "you can be whatever you want, but I'm going to shame you if you don't fit into the narrow range of characteristics I just described you as not needing to be."

[–]amratheavenger 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So saying she won't date British men because they are reserved is shaming now. So if we fallow with this line of logic that you can be something with out you personally being attracted to it is contradictory. Than if I say you can have long hair as a male but don't personally like it means that I am contradicting myself.

I am generally a libertarian so I believe people should have the freedom to do what you want. Does that mean I like everything people do personally? Not really. But that doesn't mean I should be able to stop them. Emma Watson is saying the same thing. You can be what you want as a man. That doesn't mean she has to like every guy. This would be being tolerant.

[–]dashing_nash 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I actually think she's kinda interesting .. Right, hear me out. I imagine this is a girl who spent her childhood surrounded by "yes men" her privilege level is through the roof .

She has no idea about real life and real issues. Or the lives of normal people. But she has some heart and picks( wrongly) what she thinks is a worthy cause- western feminism.

So she stands on a UN stage spouts some " he4she " bs and everyone claps . Further endorsing her delusions . I'm kinda wondering if the penny will ever drop for her. She's clearly not super intelligent .. But I don't think she's coming from a place of hatred

[–]baskandpurr[🍰] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree; she speaks from ignorance rather than spite. She's had an extraordinarily priviledged life, which is probably how she arrived at feminism in the first place. As it stands her exposure to the reality of the issues is zero. I think there's a good possibility she will reject feminism given time though I suspect she's more likely to go the traditionalist route after that. Her rhetoric seems to genuinely respect men, but there is no motivation for her to look past her own sexism.

Feminism rejects Emma Watson because she refuses to treat men as worthless inferiors.

But feminism is about equality, guys! It's right there in the dictionary!

And how dare she recognize that sometimes women discriminate against women? Sure there are millions of women out there trying to ban abortion and who would never vote for a female politician, but she shouldn't be mentioning anything that puts the blame on someone other than evil, evil men!

The word "problematic" always makes me laugh these days. Because it's always a complete joke when it's used.

And lol @ "white feminism" now being synonymous with "disagreement with me by another feminist". That's apparently not problematic.

[–]Elvick 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I used it once, and it wasn't a joke. It was brilliant... probably

But yeah, people who use it the most now have completely ruined it as a term. So even typing it seriously is gross.

H.L. Mencken observed that a mysogynist is a man who hates women almost as much as they hate each other. Emma Watson has made a similar observation.

[–]caketastydelish 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What I love about her "fellow feminist critics" is that they're mad at her for daring to say "men count too". She's working so hard to destroy the 'man hating' reputation that feminism has (and indeed she nearly had me convinced) but then the rest of the feminist community lambastes her for actually doing the right thing.

WHY DOES EMMA WATSON ALWAYS MORE CONCERNED ABOUT MEN, SHE SPENDS ALL HER TIME CATERING TO MALE FEMINISTS

Yes... that was the whole point of HeForShe, to try to appease men who were noticing that feminism seemed completely misandric, and appeal to them to stay White Knights regardless of that. At some point she must have realized it might help get more knights if they maybe toned down the hatred a bit.

Well, good luck, Emma, this is what happens when you question the narrative... even if you are doing it ultimately to try to build the narrative.

[–]EliCaaash 7 points8 points9 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The thing about Watson is, she never spoke for feminists, she has no fucking idea what feminism is. She never did! All that

For the record, feminism by definition is: “The belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities..."

was only tolerated because it gave them a good soundbite to shut up anti-feminists in debates. They hated that speech, but they tolerated it because Watson got so much praise over it and most of them weren't stupid enough to show themselves up over it.

But here's the thing, Watson never spoke for feminists. She's a fucking uber-celebrity on a power-trip stoking her ego by claiming to speak for a group she doesn't understand, at all. If she keeps this up she's going to ruin her long term career by becoming divisive and toxic. The backlash is already beginning and it serves the idiot right.

The problem with this video is that we did not hear Watson saying anything. This is so common in the media. We are expected to interpret the voice-over as a journalistic report. However, this format does not provide any context from Watson whatsoever. Further, the voice-over is the one framing the story and creating the context. Not that it may not be correct, but we really do not know from the report. We are expected to just believe.

The report did say that, "discrepancies of gender equality exist in all factions of American society". Yep, intelligent people already know this, and the ones paying attention know that women are just as guilty of sex role stereotyping as men. The real and persistent message here is that we rarely hear the inverse and most feminists still refuse to acknowledge their role in sexism. The ones that have typically no longer identify as feminist.

Not much of a any importance in this story other than its subtle contribution to the immaturity that continues to plaque society.

“Some women can be incredibly prejudiced against other women.”

Been saying this for years. I suggest that quite an awful lot of what is termed misogyny is instigated by other women, and only picked up on by men secondhand. Just take Ayn Rand's insufficiently famous "a woman could never be president" quote, or Mrs. Tim LaHaye (he of Left Behind fame)'s Concerned Women for America, which encourages women to eschew careers and stay home and be good wives and moms (never mind that she runs said organization). Or how about this choice list of things moms say to other moms. Or why 66% of corporate HR professionals are female, but this hasn't corresponded to anything close to a 66% rate of female candidates (candidates, not even hires) put forward for other job functions. And let's not forget Pao v. Taylor.

I kinda feel sorry for her.

That speech she did at the UN last year was pretty good. It, unlike most feminist speech, directly spoke to how men were oppressed.

What bothered me was that her speech was used to advertise for the HeForShe campaign which was absolutely silent on acknowledging male oppression.

It was a textbook example of a bait and switch.

Though I know it's terribly wrong, I must admit that I find it a bit karmic for such "early stage feminists", who know little about how radical feminism has become, experience such a strong and delusional backlash from the people "they're fighting for". I hope this opens her eyes a little to the ever increasing problem that is third-wave feminism.

I know she earns less money than her male co-stars and experiences sexism on a daily basis, but Hollywood is one of the most corrupted, supply-demand oriented industry in the world, so let's not over-generalise her experiences. And not to mention that once the big executives think the audience want to see you, they'll pay you a lot more miss Watson, regardless of the gender you identify yourself as. It's as simple as that.

Do you have any evidence that she is a "victim" of "sexism"?

[+]MrDoradus -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well now I at least know you're not denying the wage gaps between certain actors, or that she's getting paid less than some of her male colleagues.

And I am not crying you a river, I don't know how you misconstrued my comment in such a fashion.

But I think that we all agree that if there are certain sexist stereotypes still being enforced, they're being enforced in everything Hollywood related. That's just a price they have to pay for their millions of dollars, so they're certainly not "victims" by normal definition of that word.

But I can see how she might still think otherwise and contribute the "wage gap" to her sex and complain about the sexism. It's just that none of us that will never posses that kind of wealth will ever understand why she's even complaining.

[–]DavidByron2 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I know she earns less money than her male co-stars

Well if that bothers her so much she should take up porn.

But until that day she would be hypocritical to complain about being paid less and not also complain when men are paid less.

[–]ImNotIntoPokemon 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Now now, porn is unnecessary. She could play tennis.

[–]DavidByron2 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's more if she wants to work less than the men, not earn more for the same work, but yeah.

I guess she could try any job in the sex industry. Modelling for example. If she had a problem with porn. Porn just seemed closest to what she's already doing. Acting I mean.

[–]vonthe 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I know she earns less money than her male co-stars and experiences sexism on a daily basis,

Where is your evidence for that? Serious question.

[–]MrDoradus -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I've personally noticed a discrepancy between the quality of male and female characters in many movies. I'm speaking from anecdotal experience, because I have nothing else to cite than feminist biased propaganda that additionally skew these facts and I don't agree with at all. Just imagine how many strong male leads you can name and then do the same for females, or how many men are there just to be an eye candy, or how many women. That discrepancy can be interpreted as sexism and enforcing of stereotypes, I don't totally agree with that, but I don't necessarily disagree with it either. Then there's tabloids who focus more on female actors and their private lives, the red carpets where they are constantly asked about their dresses. So I understand why they could claim that sexism exists in Hollywood.

As to the wage gap all I can quote is this article, but I don't think it has as much to do with the sex of the actor than their likeability/popularity. Some female actors earn more than most of their male colleagues, so there's apparently other factors involved than the sex, which I pointed out. But it remains a fact that some actors are paid more than others.

[–]Elvick 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But it remains a fact that some actors are paid more than others.

No fucking shit?

No one is denying that, but you are trying to attach that fact to "sexism". When you have no evidence other than "Well some females make less than some males."

That doesn't tell anyone anything about sexism. You said it yourself, Hollywood is about supply and demand. If there was demand for a ton of female leads, there would them. But the people that would create those movies, are too busying whining about how sexist everything is to bother actually creating.

[+]BrianPurkiss -6 points-5 points-4 points 10 years ago (31 children) | Copy Link

Cool.

Sounds like she's an equality feminist, not an special treatment feminist.

[–]DavidByron2 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link

If she was a so-called "equity feminist" (they don't actually exist) then she'd be creating #SheForHe wouldn't she?

[–]vonthe 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Several quite rational people identify as 'equity feminists'. Wendy Macelroy, Christina H. Sommers, and Cathy Young are among them.

[–]DavidByron2 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's McElroy btw. I have a signed copy of one of her books. But she's not a feminist for all she uses the weird "iFeminist" label. (not "equity feminist btw, although it's all the same bullshit). She's a fox news commentator not a feminist.

No real feminist thinks any of those women are feminists. They are all anti-feminists. They do nothing but attack feminism. Sommers has been back and forth on whether to call herself a feminist or not, and I think Young is rather unlikely to says she's a feminist either at this point.

[–]vonthe 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I knew I was spelling it wrong. She's a feminist if she calls herself one, and her writings are where I first encountered the term. Is it impossible in your mind that someone can appear on Fox and still call themselves a feminist?

Sommers, last I checked, was still terming herself an equity feminist.

Now, Young may or may not term herself an 'equity feminist', but she very clearly champions gender equality - and that makes her one in my book.

[–]BrianPurkiss -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

You can push for equality while having certain focuses.

For example, I push for equality, but I focus on men's issues.

I don't know much about Watson, but if my extrapolation is correct, then she can be pushing for equality while focusing on women's issues.

Both genders face their own forms of adversity. It's alright to focus on one gender, as long as it's for actual equality, not for preferential treatment.

[–]RockFourFour 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

She was pushing for women by:

--Assuming they were too weak/stupid to help themselves.

--Telling men it was their responsibility as big strong oppressors to swoop in and save the damsels.

She's got some pretty disgusting ideas and it's great watching her own people eat her alive.

[–]BrianPurkiss 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

[–]RockFourFour 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Amongst those of us who study neckbeard theory, there's a general consensus that one of the "paths to neckbearditry" is when one starts off as a "nice guy". White-knighting ensues, and when the pre-beard fails to engage in sexual relations with women (of whom he feels owe him intercourse for how nice he is), he declares his hostility to women.

Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your formal invitation. Gender equality is your issue, too. Because to date, I’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society, despite my need of his presence as a child, as much as my mother’s. I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it would make them less of a man. In fact, in the UK, suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20 to 49, eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease. I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality, either.

Clearly these are the words of a sexist man-hating "feminazi". /s

[–]DavidByron2 10 points11 points12 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

HeForShe doesn't do anything for men on any of those issues or any other issue. What she means by men getting involved is involved more in helping only women.

I’ve seen my father’s role as a parent being valued less by society, despite my need of his presence as a child, as much as my mother’s

Which is why the 'father's role' in feminism is dispensable and sneered at, the custodial parent can at any time move hundreds of miles away following separation without any consequences, and feminists fight tooth and nail to prevent any change in the law that would benefit the millions of non-custodial dads who hardly ever see their children.

I’ve seen young men suffering from mental illness, unable to ask for help for fear it would make them less of a man.

HAHAHAHA MALE TEARS!!!!

In fact, in the UK, suicide is the biggest killer of men between 20 to 49, eclipsing road accidents, cancer and coronary heart disease.

In which feminists victim-blame suicidal men for their inherent toxic masculinity, rather than the way society is structured. The two leading days on which men kill themselves are father's day and Christmas. What does that tell you?

I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success.

Which is why we have endless bigotry emanating from feminists like Clementine Ford and Julie Bindle. It's all because they're such compassionate humanists who care about male suffering so much.

[–]chocoboat 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you think Emma Watson was in favor of fathers' roles being diminished and that she thinks mental illness in men is pathetic and amusing, you're a lost cause.

[–]DavidByron2 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So she lies in front of the UN about the movement, but you think she's for equality personally? She just fronts for a sexist organization?

[–]Lethn 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think she's either got no clue about what the modern feminist movement really is or she is being duped by feminists that will have inevitably encouraged her to do it and probably helped her prepare the speech. It won't be the first time that a celebrity has been told by political groups to take a certain position while being completely ignorant on the subject.

There's a lot of feminist rhetoric hidden away in all those kind words about equality because as Ingsoc226 said they're talking about things like a "distorted sense of what constitutes male success" which inevitably means they're trying to target common masculine behaviour which feminists will always view as wrong.

The problem is though I do think it's more that she's fucking naive so she could genuinely be believing this shit, but we just don't know.

[–]Arby01 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
