There is definitely irony in that story but the fact that it takes precedent over the matter of rape is pretty disconcerting. But I have to say it's not only women who perpetuate the myth of male hypersexuality to the point where they believe men cannot be raped. There are plenty of men who project the masculine ideal that any female attention, especially sexual, is sought and cannot feasibly be forced upon men.

As someone who has had many conversations on this topic, people have told me consistently that they believe rape is one of the most traumatic and emotionally painful experiences one can have. Whether or not I believe that is irrelevant, but since many of the people who have told me this have been women, I find it shocking that they would so casually laugh and dismiss something like this.

I fail to see how some could proclaim rape to be so traumatic and hurtful to their gender, but then turn around and laugh when it happens to someone else. I struggle to find an appropriate analogy, because it is difficult to word one that does not belittle rape victims, but here's my best:

It's akin to someone sitting on a plane and hearing a fellow passenger make a bomb joke. In disgust, that someone reprimands the passenger for promoting a culture of violence and that bomb jokes are not only unfunny, but disrespectful to the victims of terrorist attacks. However, somewhere down the line, after this person has left the plane, makes a bomb joke. When someone calls this person out on the same logic as before, this person dismisses it as harmless.

Is that perfect? No and it's probably full of gaping plot holes. Also, note that I'm in no way trying to compare rape and terrorism or to weigh one over the other.

Am I saying all women think male rape is funny? Not at all. Many women I talk to take the issue seriously and a few in particular say that the seriousness of sexual assault should not hinge on gender. But the fact of the matter is many do. And therein lies the problem.

Men and women are supposed to have equal rights. If the roles were switched in this story (woman robbing and being kept as a sex slave) it would be on the news for weeks and we would be scrutinized for laughing at it. Now, I don't care if somebody finds rape funny, but nothing should change just because of the sex of the victim and the sex of the perpetrator.

Yes, he committed a crime by attempting to rob her, but the correct response would be to call the police. Self defense is appropriate, even tying him up until the police got there, just in case for safety reasons. But when you rape someone...that can never be justified and I feel that's a way bigger crime than breaking/entering/stealing. It's so bizarre and I can't fathom why this woman (or anyone) would do that. And yeah, if the genders were reversed, the man would be getting shit doing it. It's sick that these women can laugh at this. It's not laughable, it's more like a WTF why?

While I agree male rape is a serious issue that needs attention, it is presumptuous to think the women are laughing at male rape and not the irony that the victim was a burglar robbing her house. I, for one, laughed when I saw the movie Home Alone not because males were being assaulted, but because of the irony that they were burglars.
