I live near Ubisoft’s headquarters in SF, was planning on doing a boot camp with them over the summer last year, and what do you know, it’s girls only. I don’t see why the solution to getting more girls into STEM is to just straight up discriminate against boys.

Google does the same shit, my senior year of high school we were told about a thing they had for programming/computer science where not only was there an instructional course, but lots of give away, handouts, etc. We were told that the program was not available to white or Asian men. Period.

It is so tiresome. I once applied to get a week of visitation in a nearby research company and I got instantly denied, saying they can't afford it, I put it subtly that I wasnt looking to get paid. Later I found out, they accepted a girl I knew for a ****** PAID internship. She applied the same week, sent the same standard application to dozens of companies. All because they had to meet a quota. She told me with a grinny faces that she didn't do anything and spent a whole month looking at her phone, since she said to her instructor that she wasn't interested in anything and they didn't want to fire her.

As a Pasifika-American minority, I hate that shit like this happens ALL THE TIME to you guys. The same way minorities claim that they don’t deserve to be discriminated against because they didn’t choose their race is the exact same way that we shouldn’t crap all over straight white males for being born the way they are. True story: A female friend of mine had a son with a Hispanic guy. Her son has good grades, but keeps putting down that he's Caucasian on forms.

At his mother's request, I had a conversation with him and explained that when he's applying for college or scholarships, he's Hispanic. Then, when he gets out of college, he can be as Caucasian as he wants to be from there on out.

So, my friend, let me just note: I think you may have MISTAKENLY put that you were caucasian on there when you are actually Hispanic. You should rectify that error and reapply.

About 3 years ago I was reviewing engineer resumes for a company I worked for up until recently. We kept getting these really “oddly” qualified individuals. Like...people who claimed to be engineers but were in reality just Verizon linesmen. We also ended up with several foreign nationals which wasn’t allowed for this position.

Anyhow, after a few cycles of corporate HR passing these Non engineers to our little group I noticed that every single resume listed National Society of Black Engineers membership on their resume. In the end we did end up with a qualified individual who was also black but he would have been qualified even if he hadn’t been black.

I tell you this because one doesn’t need to be black to join NSBE and you can filter by NSBE without setting off any alarm bells.

Title IX states that: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

It's hard for me to believe that this is acceptable to intelligent lawmakers even on the left. Wait till you start working in STEM, every position provided by a government organ or some virtue signaling company have "we encourage women and minorities to apply", which surprise, surprise, you'll never get a callback for these jobs. And when you are well established in the private industry, your company send tender for government contracts. You get them, and you see in the contract that they demand that 25-40% of the engineering work is done by a female engineer when your company already struggle to hire enough qualified engineers at all, requiring them to be women too would be close to impossible.

I assume they are referring to studies like this you may want to note the wrinkles in the studies including that males do not dominate all stem fields.

You may be able to make a case if you are low income or potentially may redefine the underserved population to be something other than race or sex... Like being the child of an incarcerated parent.

And if they email you back saying yes, specifically to underrepresented cultures, send them an email stating what if you are not from those and still express interest in doing summer programs similar to that?

In their statement they post pretty clearly what it is exactly but googling unm summer programs it doesn’t advertise the unite program very clearly so I get why you applied.

Is it wrong is the question. I would say that they could’ve gotten around this if they did a men’s session and a women’s session and made sure to but seeing as their no other options for you at that specific public university beyond environmental science to makes it wrong for them to exclude you.

This is completely unjust and senseless because you don't somehow benefit from men being over represented in stem 25 years ago. You're in high school now, you need to get your education now. It makes no sense to restrict your opportunities because of what happened to completely unrelated people in the past.

It's especially unjust considering that in the US, boys are behind in nearly every category in education. Boys are significantly less likely to graduate high school and attend university, so restriction scholarships and internships for being male is indefensible.

This is yet another example of why no, feminism is not enough to address male issues and that we need a mens movement like the MRM.

Most of this problems seem to happen mostly in the US. I dont have much experience but at least in Europe or in Spain, this doesnt happen or never heard of it before. Got hired for my very first job and i doubt that being white, black or indian would had affect it by any chance. But its scary to think that all this could change in the future. Are you sure it says they only accept minorities? Or does it say that preference will be given to minority applicants and applicants from group traditionally underrepresented in STEM fields? There's a huge difference.

Having worked with similar programs I'll let you in on a few things: 1. Programs designed for kids who are from underrepresented groups often cover basics. So if say you've been programming since you were 10, currently take all the CS classes your school offers, do python in your spare time...you won't get in because you likely won't get anything out of it 2. People who run those programs often have connections to other similar programs. If you feel like you didn't get in for being white, write to them and ask if they can recommend other programs. If you are a star overachiever, also ask if you can volunteer. 3. There is often a waiting list, especially if the program is free. If you are really interested in the program, ask to be put on the waiting list and explain how you think you can benefit from being in the program and what you can offer in the program. For example, maybe you haven't really had much exposure to engineering or come from an underprivileged background.

It's a big ask, but maybe consider posting your essay. The fact that you're surprised you didn't get in shows a level of hubris that may or may not even be justified. I know it sucks to not get into a program, especially if there aren't many. If you're interested in a particular branch of engineering post it here and maybe someone can recommend resources or things you can do over the summer. I'll add one more thing...if you have a car or your parents will help, go to the university's engineering department and ask around if anyone needs help in their lab over the summer. I once worked for a school for the gifted and many of the kids who won prizes, got into the best schools...did so because they happened to be working in the lab of someone doing a really cool project and were allowed to participate.

Good engineers would have done discovery and figures out all that out before applying. For instance, Texas A&M engineering pretty much fills up a the early application period. Why? Because engineers have their shit together by the early application period. Chalk up the BS program you didn’t get into as a learning experience and you will be better for it
