Sometimes when my husband tickles me or puts cold hands on my back, I'll slap his chest or arm. I know he won't hit me back, and he told me I need to stop doing that. He asked what I would think if he hit me like that?

He's right; I'm wrong.

It's very easy to fall into this position because as a woman, I feel that I can't do him any real harm. It's typically a kneejerk reaction to hit him, but I'm trying to learn self-control.

To anyone saying that men should just leave or hit back: Our society takes the woman's side in cases of abuse. If a woman abuses a man he is seen as weak. An abused woman is seen as victimized. People say to hit back, but if he does so (in self defense) he goes to jail and is forever labelled a wife beater. Men can lose everything just for defending themselves. Our society places women on a pedestal and encourages women to fight- to be a "bitch" and slap men. But an abused man fighting back or leaving is seen as a bad thing. He is seen as an asshole who is abandoning his family. You also need to be made aware that women can fuck shit up. I know several men who were seriously injured by their wife or girlfriend. I know one guy who was attacked in front of a group of people. His girlfriend kicked him so hard in the nuts that she burst one of them. He pushed her away and the group jumped him "for hitting a chick". There are battered women's shelters, places to go for women who are abused. But there are very few places for an abused man to go.

I see victims of domestic violence all the time as part of my job. I see women who are abused and help them find shelter. But finding a man a place to go is so damn difficult- and I have tons of resources. I also see that many of the women who are abusing their man get away with it.

We all need to realize that it is not as easy as we think to just leave or fight back. Society and the law are often on the woman's side even if she is the abuser.

When people say "I was beaten as a child but I deserved it", that is actually a sense of empowerment for the child, it makes the victim believe they were in control of the beating because they did something wrong. When in fact a child should not be routinely disciplined with physical abuse.

These young implicit memories get hardwired into patterns that require therapy to unwire. The victims then seek out abusers in their relationships, and believe it or not, receiving abuse is closely wired with arousal mechanisms.

Excellent post. The assumption that men are never battered is one of the fallacies that we need to address. Most people, and by that I mean 90 percent of the population or more, simply cannot even consider that a man would not hit back. Yet abusive women rely all the time on the fact that their male partner will not hit them back. Any competent domestic violence therapist knows this; it's part of the pattern in many domestic abuse cases.

The reality is that most battered men are in love with their abuser. The mindset of "yeah, sure, he's giving as good as he gets" conveniently ignores this fact.

Battered men are guilty - of not wanting to hit someone they love. For this they are ostracized.
