As a person whose had two natural kiddos I’d fucking do it. Pregnancy/birth sucks ass. But I wouldn’t do it without a partner. Kids are WAY long term to do that shit alone lol

I'm not sure what artificial wombs would do. Say someone wants a child. They can pay a machine to make one but then they will need to look after it. Most people don't want to be a single parent. An artificial womb seems like a more expensive way to become a single parent.

There were experiments done with babies where the babies were not given affection or physical touch and the babies died. I am not sure that artificial wombs will be as effective as a woman carrying the baby. I can’t speak for others but I loved growing my baby inside me and nurturing her before birth and then greeting her after 9 months. Obviously that is not possible for women who are sterile or, for example, gay couples (men) who want a child. But I am not sure that an artificial womb is the answer for everyone.

Why would having the option to reproduce without being pregnant be the end of humanity and relationships?? This will be great for women who can’t get/stay pregnant or have health problems that make pregnancy too dangerous or for gay men and many other scenarios. I’m not seeing the negative.

It's interesting and potentially very beneficial, but it will be abused.

The pressure on women based on the "ticking clock" will stop. The age for women's first motherhood will move up by at least 5 years. This will give women more space to build their careers and the like. And thanks to the fact that women live longer, on the contrary, it will be a bigger problem for men when to have a child so that they can live long enough to raise offspring to adulthood and see their grandchildren

Women will cease to have their irreplaceability compared to men. One woman will be able to have 5-10 children as long as she (or her partner or state) can support them. As a result, fewer women will be needed to maintain the population, a larger proportion of women will never have children. Since women will no longer be needed to such an extent to give birth to children, it will be possible to recruit them into the army and let them do similarly dangerous professions as men do. Or have a higher proportion of men in the population to the point where women are precious again.

States will build their own populations without the need for families as basic units. Parenting can become more like a job.

While now the pressure is on every woman to have a child if possible, but to choose the best quality man for it (so that a greater proportion of women than men will reproduce), with Ectolife a greater percentage of women simply do not reproduce, and this may have interesting implications for the genetic diversity of humans in the future.

Affecting fetuses in artificial wombs will become a big topic. It is possible that the choice of music and other stimuli will be shown to be important in shaping people's personalities. States will look for ways to use this to shape future generations. In some extra dystopian future, it is possible to divide fetuses into castes even before birth and influence them according to their future intended purpose.

People need to relax. Is there something wonderful about seeing the baby bump grow, feeling a more personal connection from the kicks and ultrasound, etc.? Yes. Women who want to experience natural pregnancy will still have that option.

That said, it’s not just a matter of convenience for women. Pregnancy comes with incredible health risks, some of which are irreversible. Men seriously underestimate how difficult it is and I don’t fault women at all for cheering this development.

The only real concern is that the benefits of bonding via oxytocin in utero are lost. But we’re already at a point where a large number of women are eschewing child-rearing, so the ones who still have kids are far likelier to actually want them. We also have serious issues with a rapidly plummeting domestic fertility rate (which causes all sorts of problems), and I’d imagine artificial wombs mean women who want kids would have more of them. We could even couple this with a voucher program where the government gives you money (e.g., the now-expired child tax credit) to help raise your kids in order to incentivise it.

TL;DR: I’m all for it.

Don't know how viable this is yet, and it will cause a lot of legal and ethical questions-- especially in the testing phase. How do you ethically test this? There's also a law in place that doesn't allow human embryos to develop past 14 days in labs. It's no longer a hard rule, but most labs follow it. I would say this is more sensationalism right now, then viable technology.

I was just thinking about Star Wars and the clone army made up entirely of one bounty hunter's clones. A thread mentioned that was slavery, but I quickly realized that idea wouldn't make sense if the initial person agreed to the cloning, because it's only going to be a replication of his own brain. If he knows that lifestyle, he could literally consent for his clones to endlessly be involved in that type of life, and they'd all enjoy it just as he did.

Essentially, if we look at unique individuals, either those who turned out a certain way due purely to their biology, or even those who ended up a certain way because of their lifestyle which we could integrate in a training process to a generalized degree, we could end up with people to fill every different desire held by others of us.

Petty laborers. Someone out there has an unquenchable desire to do manual labor. Clone them and let them be our worker ants. They'll fill those roles out of their innate desire and they'd feel all their bodies reward mechanisms feeding into that, because that's who they are. This is the basis of this idea. People's brains and actual internal reward mechanism can get extreme/strange enough that they can fill standard roles as well as ones that otherwise lead us to deem outliers harmful over(essentially, these clones could enjoy being "victims" in many ways.)

Similarly, some people have high sex drives and no outlet. We've seen "incels" arise because many males see themselves as being lower value and incompetent against other males. These guys have the depraved stance that this isn't fair and women should potentially be "provided to them," because, in their mind, they're otherwise hopeless, which leads to life feeling like a meaningless torture knowing they'll always be alone. That's a real problem(it might seem entitled, but we're talking about the meaning of life, human connection, never being realized for some people,) but it's inhumane to imagine forcing someone into that lifestyle. But...

What if we could find women with low sexual/judgment standards or just an irrationally high sex drive, perhaps who also feels a deep level of devotion to one person. All we need is one person to fit this criteria, but there could be plenty of ideas out there. Find that person to consent to being cloned and consent to the alternate lives their cloned brain will live, then suddenly we end up with clones that can be raised for their specific goal, according to the consent of the original person and how they believe they would enjoy that sort of lifestyle put on them. Hell, it could even still involve a degree of consent. Once she meets the guy, she can choose to consent or not. If she says no, then she might just not have been a proper clone for this effort. Either way, someone could be found for this.

What about abusive people? We can clone masochists who know they'll like the pain, particularly those that have no life-based reason for being masochistic(biological enjoyment of pain, in this case.)

I’m all for it. When I first divorced, artificial wombs were being floated as an idea. I thought bugger it, I’ll bang around, then just pick a few women and have some sons. No sweat.

Despite being all for it however, there’s merit to natural births. So I’m not completely sold on artificial wombs just yet. That said, there’s a ton of potential.

I think it's mostly a pipe dream, but to the extent that it's not, I think it will almost entirely be used by couples where the woman can't carry the pregnancy to term or to finish gestation when the baby is born prematurely (I'm most excited about the latter possibility -- this technology could save tons of wanted babies).

Aside from that it will be just like surrogacy, only affordable to the super rich. It won't have much impact on regular people.

Lots of women struggle with infertility, and some can't carry a pregnancy so it would be a big help. Also for a lot of us who are terrified of pregnancy and childbirth it would be an incentive to have kids. Because right now I am absolutely not okay with it at all. The idea of being pregnant even in a stable relationship fills me with dread. The permanent changes it causes to your body. I'm not down also the pain of childbirth/risk of death and injury. If we can mitigate that risk and pain and suffering why not?

Not sure what is ground breaking about this. If you have money, you can already afford artificial wombs - they are called surrogates. You choose an egg donor from a long catalogue, then pay for the surrogate and boom, you have a baby that is only yours now.

I don't think it's pregnancy that usually stops people from wanting more kids. It's the ability to care for them after they are born. I see a lot of babies abandoned if this is real in future. Also, I think this is another way to dehumanize people. I think we could more easily justify using these kids because a part of us wouldn't think they are really human. I know I wouldn't trust someone who was made in an artificial womb. I'm honestly shocked people are ok with this.
