In pre-Christian nature-based religions, women's bodies were considered slightly mystical because of their ability to procreate, and because their reproductive cycles corresponded to the cycles of the moon.
With limited career options, selling mystical services was a good way for women to make money, especially old widows who couldn't do manual labor, and couldn't find a new husband to support them.

Women were the gatherers and knew a lot of the herbs and plants that were edible or could be used for healing. Healers and midwives whose patients died or did not become well as quickly as they liked were considered to be evil witches in superstitious times. Widows were often accused of being witches so that their property could be seized by neighboring (usually male) property owners.

Because women always bewitch men with their tricky seductress ways. It’s so unfair that men are forced to get boners they didn’t ask for and can’t act on. It’s not that men think with the little head too much. It’s definitely witchy women that need to be punished for being foul temptresses.

Seriously though, women have had to rely more on intuition and hints and reading between the lines in life since unlike men we can’t rely on brute strength. Naturally those traits fit with “reading” signs and cards etc. Spells are a way they might feel in control in a world where again directness and strength don’t always work for women. I am pretty sure in Christianity there are more male theologians writing left brained stuff about faith, but more female mystics.

Men’s superstitions are around conspiracies and aliens and stuff.

Priests/rabbis/mullahs/etc are in essence witches, and usually male. I mean just saying... you know it is true, only takes a little bit of thought and it is obvious. These are people who will tell you how to partake in ritual activity to gain the favor of a deity. There's only a division between them in our minds because churches etc have forced that division often using lethal force to do so. It all traces back to shamanism and it is all different incarnations of the same shit.

I find it kind of hard to measure who is more witchy as a broad group, men or women. I mean there's more women go to church services in western cultures... more women who might put together a charm or a spell... but on the other hand how does one measure that against the might of the largely male catholic church? How does one measure that against the huge number of male Mormon missionaries? How does one measure that against the fact that Islam pretty much seems to have a small army of religiously devout and profoundly radical individuals hanging off it and determined to make sure they impact everyone's life whether we wish to be impacted or not?

And you have to look at communities that aren't modern western ones. Chinese businessmen who won't buy property unless the fucking street number is what the feng shui expert says it needs to be. Don't be albino in certain parts of Africa, some asshole of a person who is almost certainly a dude is going to want to use your bones for prosperity rituals and you'll be kidnapped by some other asshole who is almost certainly a dude and chopped up and sold to him.

The original witches in Europe were healers and midwives, revered by their communities. After Christianity took over, they wanted to demonise the women so they could have more power themselves.

Okay so you're talking about magic in the sci fi sense. "Magic" has always existed and women have always been the ones drawn to occult because women are better at abstract creative thinking. Men are more likely to use logic and are more skeptical in general.

I don't understand your post. Do you think witchcraft is shooting flames at people or waving a wand around? Witchcraft isn't just something you "believe" in or don't, like ghosts or whatever. There are actual occultists out in the world and that's their faith, their religion. I'm not understanding what you're trying to get at?

I would like to point out that even if a culture considers magic feminine their male dieties were still sorcerers. Odin and Zeus had feminine aspects as a result.

The flip side though is angoddess can have a masculine aspect and that masculine aspect matters more than a gods feminine one. Someone like say, aphrodite, can be depicted as a man or with male features. Hermaphrodite is derived from Hermaphtoditus, the aspect of Aphrodite that has a heavy blend of male and female features.

By contrast most of Zeus feminine features were passed off onto other, fully female dieties. Most of Zeus's supernatural aspects were shared with Athena like the Aegis and thunderbolt. This isn't unique to him or magic as Ares has a female equivalent, Enyo, in his retinue that's either his sister or wife who he shares symbolism with. However Enyo is also one of the Graeae and thus has mystical aspects Ares doesn't. So we can say it's more acceptable for a female diety to be masculine than a male one feminine.

Odin has no discrete female aspect and thus his "magic" bits call his sexuality into question. But then nordic sorcery is a different beast because it involves handling a lot of dicks and ballsacks so that's neither here nor there.

It's not. Except in the sense that the word magic is used to describe religious practices that are not mainstream within societies that barred women from meaningful participation in mainstream religion.

Modern witchcraft is exactly that: modern. It's a recent creation that uses bits and pieces of various pre xtian religions. Those religions, in their time and place, were as established as Islam is in Saudi Arabia.

I think the reason for this is that men see themselves as being rational and logical, but women can have an "enchanting" effect on men. Due to hormones, women can sometimes get men to do things they wouldn't normally do. So men see this as a form of control, when in fact the real issue is their lack of self-control.

Witchcraft is more associated with peacefulness, spirituality, beauty in nature and charmed objects. It is a lot of imagination, scents and patience. Mindfulness. Not always but mostly female characteristics.
