The lawsuit is wasting a perfect marketing opportunity. I don't know any of the players, which cities have a professional women's team, or anything else related to professional women's soccer. All I know is the gender discrimination lawsuit, and that US women's soccer is dominant against other countries that possess even less established women sports.

Our state team played UCF’s women’s soccer team back in 92’. We absolutely destroyed them, I had to of been 15-16 at the time and the girls were juniors and seniors in college. Physically, they weren’t even a match for us. Now, I am not saying that they suck because they were good players, and they played admirably but there was clearly a difference in how the game was played regardless of us being 4-6 years younger.

Let’s also translate that the advertising involved with men’s compared to women’s is considerably different including the broadcasting. There is just less of an interest world wide.

If they are getting paid via the money from ticket sales and ad revenue, then yea, you get less. But if their pay is from “US soccer”. Then it should probably be the same if it’s paid from tax dollars.

As always numbers differ from country to country. Yes, for sure FIFA is well behind where it should be on the women’s game. But, so are many countries. Did you know, for example, that from 1948 to 1979 it was actually illegal in soccer crazy Brazil for girls and women to play?

You can say that is all in the past now, but take the US where girls and women play a lot. In 2007 the USSFput in place the Development Academy program designed to get top level coaching and consistent standards in place across the country. Sounds like a good idea. The DA immediately became the top league with clubs fighting to be named as participants. Girls were not included until 2017. That’s in the US. That’s with the same organization that runs the national teams.

For the US my suggestion is simple. Open the books so everyone can see what the USSF is getting from the women’s side. Let the women’s side agree to match those funds - put an agreed upon additional % towards girls/women side play, and they can keep the rest for pay.

This is 100% correct, you can´t demand equal pay if you don´t make an equal amount. But as always there are some points to the argument that both sides forget. Women argue that it´s discrimination and they need equal pay which is ridiculous since they simply don´t bring in the figures to justify those wages. Yet men always quote the difference in quality to the mens game which is true, as it is in all sports, but forget the lack of funding they´ve had historically. Professional female football was straight up banned by the English FA for 50 years, at the same time that football was spreading to the whole of Europe and dynasties like the Milan clubs were being created. Manchester united, still the richest and one of the most successful football clubs ever, only started a female team last year. It´s no longer a contact sport so there´s no reason why the womans game can´t be an entertaining and competitive product. I love football and trust me. Now it´s getting proper funding the quality has been improving rapidly and there´s some serious talent on show, and even though these arguments about equal pay make no sense at all, the noise they´ve been making have forced clubs to up the funding to a fairer level and that can only help the game.

As noted elsewhere below, the USSF has 1 sponsorship -- Nike. All other revenue for the USSF comes from dues/fee payments (the USSF has girls and boys leagues run through state associations, as well as a national open tournament, and referee licensing). The USSF also gets monies paid to it by Sports United Marketing (SUM) -- which is an entity largely controlled by MLS. In exchange for royalty payments SUM handles all media deals (TV, Radio, Internet, etc. . . ), all tournament and game management fees/revenue for the national teams, and all national team marketing/endorsements.

The women's side basically claims that SUM naturally makes deals that benefit its ownership -- largely the MLS owners. But, the women's side asserts, that the women's side of things would do better if you let them cut their own deals without concern over whether an arrangement would be good or bad for MLS. If Pepsi were to offer $250K to be the official soft drink of the women's world cup team, the women's side asserts that they should be able to take that deal rather than have SUM decline it because it already has a deal with Coke that benefits the MLS.

I would say the two biggest things going for the women's side in this argument are:

All of the major sponsors and potential major sponsors do not want to be seen as being against fair treatment of women/girls. Nike, for example, very, very, very much does not want to be seen as discriminatory against women/girls. There are tens of millions of women/girls buying Nike products for themselves and their families. That goes for pretty much all the major sponsors. Do you think Coke wants to be known as supporting in any way discrimination against women/girls?
The USSF has long discriminated against women/girls in its management and operations. And, it has done so recently -- not decades ago. (Case in point -- the USSF Development Academy system).

Probably things are too far gone to put back together now. I would guess that what is needed is for a new organization to take charge of the women's side -- possibly under the US Soccer umbrella. Let them negotiate their own deals. If SUM is the greatest thing for US soccer ever then I am sure the women's side will strike a deal with them.

Just so everyone knows these numbers aren't correct. As part of the lawsuit the audited financials showed the women actually earned more. Honestly they are alot more popular than the men's team, they kinda suck, while the women have multiple world cups.

3.4 billion divided by 750 million equals 4.53

So men's league has 4.5 times more viewers

Now the pay,

4.4 billion divided by 131 million equals 33.58

So men are getting paid 33 times more money, despite only having 4.5 times more viewers.

How does this have so many upvotes? Anybody with a bit of quick math could figure out that men getting paid 4.4 billion for 3.4 billion views is >1 dollar per view, and women only getting paid 130 for 750 million is less than 20 cents per view.

Am I missing something obvious here?
