It's amazing what we can justify to ourselves when we care about somebody... How many things we can sweep under the table.. I remember telling myself oh she's just depressed, she had a rough childhood,, just a rough patch, etc. You look back and realize the times you weren't saying that was the exception and usually when she wanted something. Also the tendency to want to save them. Learned the hard way you flat out can't do that.. you're bit their therapist. Can't say I've ever been threatened with a lethal weapon though damn

Sadly I think some of us just don't know what a healthy relationship even looks like. I'd say I didn't. Basically the advice is always shut up, compromise, she's always right, happy wife, happy life, help her around house and she'll scratch your back too, etc.

He probably sounds like thousands of men who, if they talked about it or had safe spaces and opportunities in which to talk about it, would say the same sorts of things about why they never leave their abusers. Further it sounds like a lot of women (who DO have safe spaces and opportunities to talk about it) when they talk about why they never leave their abusers.

Point here is that this cycle is a real one, I wish I knew the clinical terms for the things I'm seeing in this person's post. It shows that there is some parity and similarity in the abuse cycles whether it's a woman being abused or a man being abused.

I'm not going to repeat others' advice as I don't know enough about your situation. However I will say this: please try to find a way to protect yourself from the possibility of serious problems in the future. Gather evidence of any abusive or coercive controlling behaviour as best you can, and if you're in a two-party consent state then any recordings must be consented to by all parties (so it can be risky to make secret recordings; you may have to talk about it and explain it's for your own peace of mind since the gun incident). Take contemporaneous notes in e.g. a diary. This will hopefully be unnecessary but it will protect you in the event things go really bad and the legal system gets involved.
