I used to think this before I understood the issue. But there is really no way to make prostitution meet the health and safety standards of any labor laws. Trafficking has gotten worse in the countries where prostitution has been legalized. When you legalize the sale of human bodies for sex you open up a whole can of worms that’s best left alone.

The industry itself is misogynistic. That’s why many places are choosing to just criminalize brothels/pimps and/or johns. Imagine if there was an industry where the demographics were mostly black people getting paid by white people to do sex acts for white people’s pleasure. It seems really sus. So, why is it okay when it’s women being paid to serve men? Most women in prostitution don’t want to be there and do it because they lack options. Prostitution would barely exist if systemic misogyny and rape culture weren’t a thing.

Most rapes go unreported because of safety concerns or knowing nothing or next to nothing will be done, and for prostitutes making reports is going to be even riskier as it's tied to their jobs and they're usually in very vulnerable groups anyway. Look, any other job with this rate of exploitation and abuse has been banned, but you don't see people crying that they can't go down mines any more because they're being "treated like a child". Make the job anywhere near safe and get back to me.

My feelings about it are very mixed. Prostitution is a dangerous line of work even under ideal circumstances and for those on the street, it's even worse. Nor do they go to the police due to stigma.

It's called the world's oldest profession for a reason and I'd like sex workers to have somewhere to go in case of dangerous clients. However, I'm not sure about decriminalization because I fear the spike in demand would led to a similar increase in human trafficking, especially with women from poor countries who don't speak the language.

Nor do I think it would really solve the problem of lonely men. But in either case, I wouldn't expect to see it happen anytime soon, if ever. Both conservative organizations and many feminists oppose any such move, albeit not all.

I am in a country where prostitution is not illegal, it is just ignored by law and prostitution is excluded from the business regime.

Pimping is illegal but of course, without some sort of pimping it can hardly work.

It's not an ideal solution, because it doesn't solve many of the pains of prostitution: prostitutes have only a limited support, they are on the fringes of society, even legally, everyone tries to push them out because of the threat of persecution for pimping, which can be taken very broadly, they don't pay taxes on their business, so they de facto don't have a job, nor social security, pension, etc.

But the alternative would be the full legalization of prostitution, which would effectively turn the state into a giant pimp, and many people don't want it for social and moral reasons. So they prefer this form of hypocritical disregard of reality.

But I still think that the situation in my country is better than if prostitution was completely illegal and the prostitutes or their customers were threatened with punishment.

But because you have CMV. Prostitution is not an exclusively female affair. There are plenty of male prostitutes, especially for gay customers. So the persecution of prostitution is not misogynistic.

It would allow a practice that already goes on to be done under safe conditions for the men and more importantly the women. It's not a perfect solution and there will be downsides. I personally do not think men should utilize prostitution. As it removes the adversity from attracting women which is critical for the development of a man. But it will greatly reduce human trafficking which is a heart breaking crime.

Okay here’s the thing. Just take a look at how many bad things happen with prostitution involved. To favour/legalise prostitution means to do even more damage. Because now, since it’s legal, more and more prostitutes, typically women than men, put themselves out there. An person who’s already had premeditated intentions about prostitutes won’t change their minds about them is the law changes. If someone wants to do something to them, they won’t care if prostitution is legal or not, if the law favours the prostitutes or not. And the prostitutes themselves, they will remind you and that law favours prostitutes, and then put in an act where they would basically make you the bad guy. For instance. They can claim that you sexually assaulted them, and since there is the law that will favour a hooker, guess what, you’ll be fighting a pointless battle just to prove your innocence. So in the end, is it really worth it? There’s nothing in the law system and basically prostitution is not cared about. It does damage. There’s something in the law system and prostitution is favoured, there’s still damage being done. But you make it illegal and anyone caught in the act or having anything to do with prostitution, people better start giving a crap if they don’t want to have a mark in their identity and have a hard time getting through life after being released. So basically, it doesn’t do any damage/does less damage.

This seems like a gotcha. But whatever.

I’ve always thought legalizing prostitution, like weed, was no-brainer. It’s going to happen anyway and at least this way the prostitutes themselves may have more rights and won’t get arrested (in lieu of their pimps) making it harder to get other forms of employment down the line.

That said, prostitution, porn, and trafficking really are closely intertwined and it’s possible that keeping prostitution illegal makes it easier to crack down on trafficking, because you’re not discerning between the legal and the illegal businesses. I don’t know if making it legal will suddenly make all these pimps do everything above board to avoid liability, or if they’ll just continue to do things under the table because its the only way they can recruit girls and turn a profit.

The right thing to do would be to compare trafficking and sex crimes in countries like the Netherlands where it’s legal to other countries. But Im out of time and I don’t think you actually want to know.

Full Service Escorting can be great. But remember people are being paid to risk their sexual, physical, emotional and general wellbeing in order to satisfy a client's simple urge. A client that gets paid well, who probably has a family, and doesn't risk much at all (as long as the sex worker stays quiet).

As someone who started at 18 - I've been stalked, harassed out of the profession by "clients". To the point I don't do it anymore. I would return if it was the 'fantasy' that High Call Girl narrative likes to portray. But in reality its very lonely and you have no rights. You could be earning more than most people. But you have no 'legal' way to manage money.

Its very hard to find a place to live. So you pay inflated prices to rent with 'understanding' landlords. And its all quite effed up!!

Agreed. Let’s regulate it and make it safe. I’ve always been an advocate. I’ve always said men don’t mind paying for sex. That’s why you don’t hear men complaining about paying on the first date AND having sex. It’s only men who paid and didn’t have sex that complain. So they absolutely have no problem paying for it.

And we don’t want any sexually repulsive or sexually revolting men whining to us that it’s “nOt jUsT aBouT sEx” and try to talk stupid shit about intimacy or whatever their word of the week is. They whine about casual sex so consistently, than whenever emotional bullshit they try to spew is just that, bullshit.

If you’re too disgusting to hammer away at someone for three minutes for free, I have zero issue with women OR men (great way to earn money guys, most of these men just need a hole) taking one for the team and letting you hammer away uselessly for some cash. At least the person you’re fucking won’t be disappointed, as they’re getting money, and not having to endure terrible sex from someone grotesque for free. Let’s do it.

As someone who has visited a few escorts, while I do think it should be legal, let’s not gloss over the fact that most engaging in the the trade tend to be on the bottom rung of society. I feel uncomfortable consistently engaging in the practice knowing that I’m most likely fucking a woman that has a pimp, a serious drug habit, or is in and out of homeless shelters.

Sex trafficking will increase if it is legalized. Prostitutes will still be afraid to report abuse to a justice system that is largely dismissive and hostile to sex workers.

More than it being legal needs to happen, there needs to be a cultural shift towards seeing sex work as less disparaging which I don’t think will ever happen. Nobody wants their daughter or son to be a sex worker, pornstar, stripper, etc. That’s probably the only thing both sides of the coin agree on.
