Someone help me - the guy in the vid said, "...traditionally, male only space..." Yeah, I know 20+ years ago there might have been male only spaces, but can anyone name a space now that is a legally protected male only space? I can't think of any. Hell, male professional sports teams can't even complain about a female reporter being in their nekkid space.

SO tired of the hypocrisy.

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 122 points123 points124 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

In the United Kingdom, prisons.

That's probably not what they meant though...

Well uh you might want to check with the USAF. Pretty big scandal right now. There was a woman who got preferential treatment. She quit the training multiple times and was reinstated every time. She herself even was angry that the training standards were lowered for her.

Comment was about male only spaces. Not male dominated spaces.

-Also typed from a USAF base. (Free as of 25 minutes ago)

[–]Nk-O 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Uhm no.

There are just very high physical entry barriers for elite forces most humans can't pass. That's a filter to only get the very best considering strength, durability and other skills needed on a deadly battlefield to not only survive but also operate effectively. Males are biologically simply more durable/stronger than women, that's just a plain fact.

Quotes in elite forces is a severe and real risk for any soldier involved in such operations. The filter is there for a reason.

[–]skysinsane 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think they were saying it was a male-only space, not that it was unreasonably so.

[–]Nk-O 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

ah alright :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol whoa... i agree with you lol

Also veteran

[–]MrElderwood 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't we get female screws in our prisons?

[–]bouncedeck 18 points19 points20 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Sewage workers, Bricklayers and so on for the most part. Not that they are protected as such, just very few or no women want those jobs.

[–]thewindburner 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But they only want to talk about how few women CEO there are!

Even though CEO account for something like .0.003% of the workforce.

[–]asdf333aza 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Then there is that push that complaint about their comfy office jobs not being as well paid as the manual labor jobs that keep society afloat.

[–]kinkyonebay 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly the right point.

[–]michaelbleu 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not even locker rooms, but thats another can of worms lol

[–]Suddenly_Sisyphus42 282 points283 points284 points 4 years ago (277 children) | Copy Link

Again, replace the word men with jews, or gays, or black people and ask if it's ok to discriminate against them. If I can't ban Jewish people, gay people, or black people from my business why is it still okay to ban men? And don't give me that crap about women being uncomfortable around them. Equality before the law isn't about making sure you feel comfortable and safe everytime you walk outside your house.

[–]63daddy 68 points69 points70 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I find that’s a very good test. If a policy is fair, you should be able to reverse or switch the demographics and it will still be fair. If changing the demographics all of a sudden sounds discriminatory, it’s probably because the underlying policy was discriminatory to start with.

[+]dude21862004 -22 points-21 points-20 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This doesn't work in reality. People are different, they have different cultures, hell the USA is a swathe of different cultures that don't adhere to anything other than where you live.

Sometimes it's ok to discriminate. You don't let pedophiles get close to schools. You don't leave rapists alone with potential victims. You don't leave children alone with violent/crazy people.

Women only gyms shouldn't bother anyone. What should bother you is the inability to create a men only gym. It's like complaining that locker rooms are women and men only, ffs.

Besides, you're kidding yourselves if you don't think there are valid reasons for women to want to workout without men around.

Equality doesn't just give carte blanche to ignore cultural and societal rules. I know I wouldn't want women in my lock room, and if you go by this thread's logic that's discrimination.

Meanwhile a couple of years ago I remember this sub defending and arguing for this barber's right to kick the woman out of his men only barber shop.

How is that any different to a female only gym?

[–]pt5 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean… you’re right. Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. Men, we are better than this. Quit thinking and downvoting with your emotions.

[–]reverbiscrap 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Read the article and you will see the difference.

[–]Mephisto_Marquis 31 points32 points33 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I would be fine with a business providing a female only space IF they offer all the same services in a male only space. If a business wants to pay for double the equipment than that's fine. What's not ok is excluding a gender.

[+]Jcat555 -22 points-21 points-20 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Separate but equal is illegal. Not that I'd necessarily care in this case.

[–]Mephisto_Marquis 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And how is it any better that they DO NOT even offer the equal part of "separate but equal". If anything it's worse.

[+]Ireallyadoremyhorror -56 points-55 points-54 points 4 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

But a business would know that there is a market for places for women to work out. They're not banning men because they don't like them or believe them to be lesser. It's their business model. Would you feel better if there were also gyms just for men?

[–]dingoperson2 55 points56 points57 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Private schools would also have known there was a market for schools that banned black children.

Of course, they wouldn't do that because they hated black children. Not at all. It would simply be their business model. To make money only. That's really different from doing it for some other reason than making money.

[+]Ireallyadoremyhorror -61 points-60 points-59 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Are you seriously pretending like women's only gyms are due to hatred of men? Come on.

[–]dingoperson2 54 points55 points56 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Are you seriously pretending you are ignorant of the hatred of men displayed in social media? Come on.

Are you seriously incapable of understanding that certain schools and night clubs could want to exclude black people for business reasons only? Come on.

[+]Ireallyadoremyhorror -45 points-44 points-43 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I am definitely not pretending to ignorant about anything. If I'm ignorant, just tell me what I am supposed to know.

Please don't repeat my phrasing back at me. It's rather rude.

[–]redditmodsareshits 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Bone-Juice 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Oh so if I want to discriminate against people I just make it my business model. Got it.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Oh, Jesus Christ.

[–]Bone-Juice 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I mean that IS what you said.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I was explaining the rationale behind this. I don't appreciate the snide remarks.

[–]Bone-Juice 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't appreciate the snide remarks.

I don't really care what you do or do not appreciate.

[+]RabbitFromBrazil -61 points-60 points-59 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. It's just a business model, and a pretty smart one if I may say so.

From now on anything that does not include men is wrong? Makes no sense.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Women cry everytime men exclude them from something, so they must be held to the exact same standard, sorry, equality goes both ways, not on women's convenient entitlement.

[+]RabbitFromBrazil -9 points-8 points-7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists cry everytime men exclude them from something, not women. Men should not do what feminists do.

[+]dude21862004 -6 points-5 points-4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You can't decry someone's behavior and then use that behavior as an excuse to do it back.

[–]Onithyr 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

For the same reason why feminists claim it's wrong when the shoe is on the other foot.

[–]RabbitFromBrazil -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists are wrong on this too. Men should not do what feminists do.

[–]Bone-Juice 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's just a business model, and a pretty smart one if I may say so.

Apparently the supreme court of Connecticut agrees 6-0 that it violates state discrimination law. How smart was that?

[–]RabbitFromBrazil -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Is your opinion based on justice to define what is right? You must not like this subreddit very much.

[–]Bone-Juice 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You must have missed the part where it was a court decision. Opinion has nothing to do with it.

[–]Starmind0 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Everything that doesn't include men, but should, IS wrong. That's how humanity works. That's how equality works. If you can't handle men getting equal rights and treatment, pack your flawed ideas and leave this sub. All kinds of discrimination can be labeled as business, but only sexist oafs like you would excuse that if it was about men.

[–]RabbitFromBrazil -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No, this is not how equity should work. They are not doing it in every gym.

You guys are becoming feminists with pants on. You are too emotional and not reasoning.

[–]Starmind0 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Says the one defending a sexist "business model" and disliking men speaking up to get real equal rights. This is about human rights, not tradcon or feminist bullshit that favors women and pushes away men. I suggest you flock off the sub if you think equality is wrong.

[+]Ireallyadoremyhorror -62 points-61 points-60 points 4 years ago (194 children) | Copy Link

Is women getting their own gym really that big of a deal?

[–]dingoperson2 17 points18 points19 points 4 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Would it really be that big a deal if I wanted a bar clean of (certain skin color/religion)?!

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

It would really depend on what the reason was.

[–]Tank-o-grad 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Would them feeling uncomfortable around said race/religion be an acceptable reason?

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

What is their reason for this discomfort?

[–]Tank-o-grad 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps they've had bad experiences in the past?

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

No.

[–]Tank-o-grad 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

So what justification do the women for whom this gym segregation is have?

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I feel like I have discussed this numerous times in the thread and am tired of repeating myself. Please read the thread.

[–]My_Butt_Itches_24_7 44 points45 points46 points 4 years ago (110 children) | Copy Link

It's not about women getting their own gym. It's about segregation. They are purposefully discriminate against men simply because they are stereotyping all men and banning them. You want to start a gym that doesn't let their female patrons be harassed? Start one and enforce the rules fairly. No reason why men who don't act like that need to be pushed out by society.

[+]Ireallyadoremyhorror -13 points-12 points-11 points 4 years ago (109 children) | Copy Link

But it's not about the men or even necessarily about sexual harassment. When I was a kid, we had mixed physical education classes and in high school single gender. My feelings towards gym class completely changed because we no longer had to worry about guys laughing if we couldn't do something so it was more fun. Women who go to all women gym are not saying that all men are harassers. They're saying they can work out more comfortably in the presence of other women.

[–]My_Butt_Itches_24_7 36 points37 points38 points 4 years ago (64 children) | Copy Link

So it's OK to shutdown part of the gym with open machines and force other patrons to wait for equipment? That's what this lawsuit was about, the patrons were having to wait to use machines because some of them sat unused in the women's only section. Also, it's a fools errand to try and police what other people kook at while in public. You have no expectation of privacy when in public.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -5 points-4 points-3 points 4 years ago (63 children) | Copy Link

The gym clearly wants the market of women who want to work out without men leering at them. Letting men in to that part of the gym would make them lose that market. The gym should just get more equipment.

[–]dingoperson2 29 points30 points31 points 4 years ago (62 children) | Copy Link

The gym clearly wants the market of women who want to work out without men leering at them.

Then the lawful rule is "no leering", enforced by video camera evidence used to ban any person who is leering.

Why do women insist on lawbreaking instead of sane and legal nondiscrimination?

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -5 points-4 points-3 points 4 years ago (59 children) | Copy Link

Don't you think it would be easier to just have a separate gym than attempting to police leering?

[–]dingoperson2 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago (58 children) | Copy Link

Easier, absolutely, in the same way it would be easier to avoid racially motivated attacks by segregating living areas.

The good thing is that the people behind it are getting punished, and hopefully someone will take acts to stop those defending the sexism as well.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (57 children) | Copy Link

Attacks are very, very different from leering.

[–]TipiTapi -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Do you think the same should apply to toilets?

[–]dingoperson2 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, and neither should it apply to who someone is sharing their bed with.

[–]Mephisto_Marquis 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (42 children) | Copy Link

That's a very personal problem that you're saying should be taken out on innocent men. An all women gym is discriminatory at it's core.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (41 children) | Copy Link

It can't be that personal if there's enough women paying for memberships to these gyms for them to stay open. How is anything being taken out on you? It's just women exercising in a building.

[–]dingoperson2 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely, the same way a racially exclusive bar would just a bunch of people with the same skin color drinking together.

[–]Mephisto_Marquis 11 points12 points13 points 4 years ago (39 children) | Copy Link

It's discriminatory. They are not offering all the same services to both genders. If I lived in this neighborhood and wanted to go to a gym I would be offered less because I'm not a woman. The court even weighed in saying it violated the law and the protected rights of the male patrons.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (38 children) | Copy Link

Is having separate washrooms discriminatory now? How about locker rooms? Women's rooms don't have urinals. Is that discriminatory?

[–]Unknownqtips 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (37 children) | Copy Link

If females want their toilets removed for urinals or pissing troughs, go ahead. Trust me you dont want to piss in a pissing trough.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (36 children) | Copy Link

No, we want both urinals and stalls exactly like men have. After all, everything has to be perfectly equal.

[–]esoteric82 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women who go to all women gym are not saying that all men are harassers. They're saying they can work out more comfortably in the presence of other women.

I think that's part of the business model of Planet Fitness. They don't actively exclude men, but they have policies that are designed to screen them out, like the "lunk alarm" (if someone grunts too loud the alarm goes off and I think the person is warned or asked to leave) and they don't have larger weights in either dumbbells or plates. Hmm...

[–]OccultRitualCooking 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (35 children) | Copy Link

Yea, it's not like it's something important, like a water fountain.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (34 children) | Copy Link

Is there anyone who can make an argument that isn't just comparing this to racism?

[–]OccultRitualCooking 23 points24 points25 points 4 years ago (33 children) | Copy Link

You mean can people stop pointing out the very cut and dried comparison that demonstrates that you are being bigoted?

No, I don't think we will.

[+]Ireallyadoremyhorror -7 points-6 points-5 points 4 years ago (32 children) | Copy Link

If you can't see the difference between this and racism, you clearly struggle with abstract thought.

[–]dingoperson2 21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If you can't see the strong similarities between this and racism, perhaps you suffer from some kind of drug-induced brain damage?

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -4 points-3 points-2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

And you prove me right with more black and white thinking. Try and see nuance instead of making generalizations.

[–]dingoperson2 16 points17 points18 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Identifying similarities is pretty much the definition of nuance. Black and white means either equal or not equal.

[–]OccultRitualCooking 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

No please, explain to all of us why harming a demographic of people is different from harming a demographic of people.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I kind of already did in the thread. Have you read all my comments?

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (21 children) | Copy Link

What harm? How is this harming men?

[–]OccultRitualCooking 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

In the exact same way that not being allowed to use the water fountain harms people.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Please read my other comments in the thread. I have thoroughly explained this.

[–]TipiTapi -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Look, we all know here that banning men from gyms is bad.

Banning paying customers from attending the gym at times while allowing others based on sex is just sexist.

BUT.

The argument that this is something that is/should be socially unacceptable is not true. Toilets are separated since forever. Changing rooms are too. There IS precedent.

It does not make it boil my blood less but stop acting like its something out of the world.

[–]OccultRitualCooking 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You regularly pull your genitals out in the ladies part of the gym?

[–]TipiTapi -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Thats beside the point, you asked how giving access based on sex is acceptable and based on race is not - I gave you two examples that are widely accepted in all cultures around the globe.

[–]Starmind0 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

All discrimination is a big deal. Something you clearly can't comprehend.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -2 points-1 points0 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Right, I'm stupid for not thinking women's gyms are the end of the world.

[–]Starmind0 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

The right to vote is quite literally the least harmful and necessary right, and yet people flooded the streets for women to vote. Wasn't the end of the world, and yet they advocated. Learn what human rights are, little oaf. Or fuck off from this sub.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You're comparing people wanting civil rights to men taking women's gyms away from them? Are we not allowed to have our own sports next?

[–]Starmind0 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm comparing two not-world-ending rights. Men being discriminated against in gyms IS a concern of civil rights.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ok, I got lots of downvotes but no explanation for how this is a big deal. Could someone explain? It's not like the women's gyms have something special or some kind of privilege attached to them.

[–]GulchDale 33 points34 points35 points 4 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Because it's fucking illegal. Equal protection laws state you can't deny people a service based race, gender, religion, etc. Those laws exist for very good reason, read up on the civil rights movement.

[+]Ireallyadoremyhorror -8 points-7 points-6 points 4 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

But they can just go to another gym. Why does he specifically have to make it so women can't work out privately?

[–]LettuceBeGrateful 22 points23 points24 points 4 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

"But black people can just drink from another water fountain!"

I don't personally care about women's-only gyms, but it's hard to argue for it without arguing for segregation.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

But there aren't separate things because men are viewed as lesser. It's so women feel comfortable at the gym. We have bathrooms that are only for one gender. Is that segregation? Comparing women wanting to work out in peace to an entire race being treated as second class citizens seems pretty disingenuous to me.

[–]bringthedeeps 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Your reasoning is flawed. If men aren't allowed in a space because you 'feel' like they are in general predatory, you are in fact viewing them as lesser than women. 90% of MRA ideology revolves around the double standards put on men by people like you. Stop being part of the problem. If you reverse the sexes or substitute men for x race and it seems sexist/racist, then maybe rethink your stance.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

No, no one is saying that men are generally predatory. I said women are more comfortable working out around other women. Women are more comfortable for several reasons. Other women are at similar levels of ability. Men will laugh at fat women at the gym. Sexual harassment is only part of it.

I think I've said multiple times in the thread that I'm fine with men's only gyms but I don't think there's a market for them.

[–]Clemicus 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Other women are at similar levels of ability.

That's a generalisation. YMFTFY: "Women are a monolith when it comes to fitness"

Men will laugh at fat women at the gym

Serious question: What's your sex? If you're a woman you should know how brutal females are to other females

[–]SnarkMasterRay 13 points14 points15 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

It's a case of equal not being equal and having a double standard.

I would be fine with having women's only gyms if we could have men's only gyms, but that was effectively outlawed back in the day because of sexism and the old boys club. It's a case of "eat your cake and have it to."

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Was it actually outlawed? Or was there not really a market for men's only gyms? I'd have no problem with a men's only gym but I think gym owners don't think they'll make enough profit. Men really don't care if women are also in their gym.

[–]Irrelephantitus 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

As we can see from the court decision, both men only and women only gyms are in fact both outlawed.

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Tank-o-grad 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]TipiTapi -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No it wasnt? At least not anywhere I am aware of, can you give an example?

There is no market for it because men generally have no problem with women being around (the opposite actually) while they work out.

[–]SnarkMasterRay 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What I was referring to was de-facto mens-only clubs. The rules didn't explicitly state no women in many cases, it was just "how it was done." That was where the original discrimination lawsuits and efforts started.

Some more firm examples:

Gentlemen's clubs will be forced to admit women

[–]Ireallyadoremyhorror -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't have a problem with a men's only gym. I just don't think there's a market for them. It's weird when you flip genders because women are intimidated by men but men aren't intimidated by women. The reason why this different than discriminating based on race is that men and women are measurably different. The same can't be said for people of different races.

I feel extremely uncomfortable around Jews, black, and gay people, so I am going to put places where they can't enter. Just by them being there I feel harassed.

Is that OK?

No?

In that case, it's also not ok women-only gym areas.

If there is somebody harassing women, throw him out. But don't lump all men together.

[+]GodBirb -25 points-24 points-23 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Bro this is a reach. Just think for a second and imagine yourself in their shoes. Imagine being hit on all the time at a gym by a bunch of guys, while all you want to do is exercise.

Sure, you’re probably not gay, but everyone’s different, and if they don’t find someone attractive or they’re not interested in them, in the same way you’re not interested in a man, you’re not going to want a bunch of them interrupting your exercise.

I support this sub a quite a lot, but some of us here try too hard to make it about us being oppressed, when really it doesn’t matter that much at all, and even when the thing ‘we’re’ angry about actually helps other people.

[–]quijote3000 21 points22 points23 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

What about lesbians? Are you going to ban lesbians too? They are ogling women also. Wait, you are saying most lesbians are not constantly harassing women? Same thing for men.

Should be putting gay men in the women-only area or in the general area? Because maybe I don't want a gay man to be ogling me (just saying this to make the argument)

Problem is, by acting like that, you are making the assumption that all men are guilty by default. And only by banning them all, they are safe.

Then there is the usual problem that most women-only areas are better than the general areas

Now, here is another thought. Considering most crimes are, based on percentage over total population, made by black people, should we be making zones banned for black people?

[+]GodBirb -14 points-13 points-12 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Ah alright I get your point fair enough.

Side note though: lesbians are a minority and they wouldn’t be the majority of women anyway, so the ‘problem’ would still be lessened with a woman only gym.

Ask any male server, nurse, teacher, and they'll all tell you that they've been frequently harassed by women.

You don't see them putting up "Ban women" signs though.

But I take you think the middle East is progressive? The men there have been harassed so much by women that they made laws so that they aren't allowed to be in the same room.

[+]CatchPhraze -27 points-26 points-25 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

They should have that right though! Encouraging safe spaces where both genders are more comfortable should be the goal. Equality should always go in the way of equal positive outcomes, not identical for identical sake.

There is tons of value in male only or female only spaces. We should foster both, not attack either.

you guys never bring up the suffering of male nurses or teachers on its own

Start your own conversations.

We do. Then the shelters we set up get shut down or changed to women's shelters, college campuses succumb to protestors who balk at men's centers because we're "privileged" (no objection to women's centers, though), mental health services double down on philosophies that alienate men (this has been shown empirically), national and international groups ignore men's welfare, and feminists lobby against laws that would make harassment and female-on-male rape as much of a crime as vice versa.

It takes a very privileged perspective to say "just start your own conversations," as if this leads to change for men, or as if we're even allowed to spread the message. We literally can't talk about male suicide without being deemed bigots and having events protested and cancelled. We can't have a single movie about men's issues without women's groups protesting it and even getting it pulled from theaters.

Putting aside the benevolent sexism of "stop complaining and do something about it," I don't think women appreciate how much they have the wind of the developed world behind their back when they want to start a conversation. We have U.N. Women, but not U.N. Men. We have a White House Council for Women and Girls, but not a Council for Men and Boys.

There are legal inequalities we are still trying to fix. Until then, "live laugh love" doesn't mean shit.

Also, yeah, we have posts about women...and the inequalities and double standards they have in society. Define "harass." Taking a quick look at someone wearing a gownless evening strap while doing squats and chest cables? Initiating a polite conversation with someone on the treadmill next to yours?

There are basically two types of women at my gym. Very fit, very attractive women who don't seem to be avoiding male attention, or very overweight women trying to be healthier.

The former aren't exactly hiding in fear. The latter, while I certainly applaud the effort, are unlikely to be "harassed."

[–]DrunicusrexXIII 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course not.

But is that a regular occurrence? Do large numbers of men interrupt their workout to creepily film some girl they don't know? I find that hard to believe.

In response to the person who said if I asked women how they feel, well, no. I don't ask strangers, men or women, about their feelings. But I imagine for women it largely depends on the man who's approaching them.

I'm tall, fit, and reasonably successful, so most women don't squirm away or wilt in fear when I talk to them. They often initiate conversations with me, at the gym, on Tinder, or even in the subway. I have on more than one occasion seen women photograph or film me.

A shorter, fatter, uglier guy in old clothes? They don't acknowledge he exists, and if he talks to them politely they'll roll their eyes and walk away in disgust. Even if he's the nicest guy in the world.

We do notice these things. Your feelings are rarely some sort of inscrutable mystery.

They still exist around the world. Across Europe, there have been many challenges to them and most countries now make it difficult to have special times when women get subsidised drinks.

The last success I heard of was in Eastern Europe, where a group of MRA activists used the stupid trans-gender laws to walk into bars (beards and all) and declare themselves as a woman. Eventually, that ended up being taken up by politicians who realised that it couldn't work, so passed a clumsy local law banning sex-specific special pricing.

Segregation is inefficient.

Part of the issue here is that gym equipment was going unused while queues were forming for the same equipment. This apparently prompted the lawsuit from the members who were bored of being told they can't use half the gym when it was empty.

I do think there's an argument to be made for privacy of this kind, but there is an issue with women/men only facilities and it's one we should be honest about in part because otherwise people will demand privacy and pretend there isn't a compelling argument for some gyms to be like "We don't segregate" beyond a lack of concern for privacy.

I suppose you can use a "Beaker" approach here which may be optimal for balancing these concerns.

"Women concerned with privacy please occupy equipment to the far-left of the gym. Men concerned with privacy please occupy equipment to the far-right of the gym. If the equipment is taken, take the furthest to that section you are able.".

Sort of like the Urinal code between guys i guess, but formalized. The expectation that you will space out as much as possible is relaxed when there is a lack of spaces without people viewing it as weird for a dude to occupy the urinal next to you in that circumstance.

Other than that kind of flexible system, you're always going to run into inefficiencies with segregation.

Anytime a men's only anything is started it's overrun with women demanding entry. I hate to break it to you, but men are harassed by women far more then you believe. Why not make a gym and separate half like a bathroom if you're concerned. It's never about protection, it's about control. Nevermind that a women is typically judged more by other women then men at gyms. My wife refused to go to gyms anymore because of other women and their bullshit behavior.

There are also clear and simple ways to secure the workout-in-isolation they desire whilst not breaking the law - simply have the exercise machines in small private rooms that can be booked for 5-20 minutes. Each person of any gender can work out by themselves. It would absolutely be more expensive than today to run a business that way, but so is building a wheelchair access ramp.

They can be disappointed all they want, but the courts job is to make sure that the laws are being created properly, and are being followed.

In this case, there was no law allowing that, so therefore, if you want it allowed it must be legislated. Hence the ruling saying to go legislate it if you want it.

Courts are the wrong place to argue something that has no legislation. It's a place to argue existing legislation is being accurately applied.

When there are girls-only and boys-only schools in many countries...these kinds of spaces are not that big a deal. However, if a gym is allocating a separate area for women..it must allocate a separate area for men as well. Or else they can just have a women-only gym.

Another noteworthy point which I've read in other posts is that women have been clamping down on male-only spaces for years only to have their own spaces everywhere.

I just hope they won't be protesting against male-only spaces that crop up soon..

[–]63daddy 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The argument for women only spaces that prohibit men is no different than the argument for white only spaces that prohibit blacks. Both are simply discriminatory. Those who promote such discrimination always try to justify it. Good to see a judge coming down on discrimination and enforcing gender equality.

Local gym said the only reason they have women only hours is due to religious attire of some Muslim women.

It becomes dangerous to use the equipment with the clothing. During women only times they can take off their religious outfit.

guys, don't start this shit because you dead ass know separating exercise, saunas, sweat lodges etc by gender transcends culture and time. Yes, there are outliers but Man prepares for war together and women prepare for the latest jazzercise class together. To mingle together would severely throw the vibe and could cause the collapse of our society.

[–]John-The-Bomb-2 -1 points0 points1 point 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I might get downvoted for this, but I've read cis women complain that they felt uncomfortable lifting weights around big men at the gym and that they have left the weight lifting area of the gym for that reason. I don't think they should be uncomfortable and miss out on weightlifting because of that. They deserve a female only weight lifting space. If trans women have been on hormones for years, they would lose their male muscle mass and could be let into these spaces too.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Laws have to be based on fairness and human rights not on women's feelings, since there are no male-only gyms, banning female-only gyms is the right thing to do, is called equality, having women-only gyms but no men-only gyms is gender discrimination and is not acceptable in any egalitarian society.

[–]asdf333aza 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Only you can control how you feel. I been to the gym. And gay dudes come run next to me on the treadmill or start doing their exercises near me. And it doesn't make me feel uncomfortable in any shape or form or way. I'm hear to do my thing and he probably there to do his. I mind my business and never have any problems.

We can't control their lack of self confidence and self esteem in themselves to simply be in public around the opposite sex. And we shouldn't be discriminated or penalized because of their inner weakness.

[–]DanknessEvermemes 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So what if they feel uncomfortable, some people feel uncomfortable at the smallest of things. Now If you are feeling uncomfortable about men lifting who are just minding their own business then that problem is with you. If these men are going out of their way to make you feel uncomfortable then alert gym staff and they’ll sort it out. But the thing is, these kinds of men are regulars at the gym and there tends to be a sub community in gyms with regulars where everyone knows who everyone is and these kinds of men won’t go out of their way to make women feel uncomfortable

[–]bardy1972 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Staff can definitely help, but everyone in the gym should practice zero tolerance. I think it would go a long way in making everyone feel comfortable while being a huge deterrent for this type of behavior.

If you (male or female) are in a gym, and you see someone (male or female) harassing, ogling, or filming and photographing you or someone else, call them out and put them on blast!

They should be running out the door in shame.

Ok no. This is where I draw the line. Please hear me out because this is crucial. We NEED to put our priorities in the right places. This right here, is such a pointless hill to die on that it's gonna make the MRM seem like even more of a joke to the public eye than it already is. We already have many gyms available to us already. There's a demand for women only gyms whereas there isn't for men only gyms. I personally WANT female only gyms to be a thing and I'd be upset if they were to dissapear in the name of petty "equality". Let's put our time and energy towards men's issues that actually matter. It's the only way to attract more people to our cause. Stuff like this pushes people away from it just because of how petty it is.

[–]gundamjazz 15 points16 points17 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

male only spaces are banned. You can advocate for being a sub human somewhere else. I want equal rights.

[–]asdf333aza 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, no. We have been giving women little tiny inches for decades and now they skipping miles all over the world. The injustice has to stop somewhere. No matter how small it is, bullshit needs to be checked and called out. Cause if it isn't, then we end up with crap like this and metoo and believeALLwomen no matter what because they're women. Give women discounts on gym membership because they're women. Give women their own gym space because they're women. Every time you give them anything they just want more and more. We have cities proposing and TESTING the idea to give women basic allowances of an extra 300 to 800 dollars a week for women just because they're women. Enough is enough.

[–]Starmind0 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

So you're ok with the law discriminating against men and you called MRM "even more of a joke", but let me guess, you're DEFINITELY not a misandrist? Sit down, coward.

[–]Peptocoptr -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'll ask again. Are you absolutely sure this is the hill you wanna die on? I never said MRAs were a joke, but we both know that's how they're portrayed by the general public, and causes like these aren't gonna help with that. As much as I understand where you're coming from, I also understand why giving women gyms of thier own would be an easier temporary solution than looking out for every guy who might harass them in a unisex gym at all times. We have more important things to take care of than that kind of discrimination right now. That's my stance. You're free to take it or leave it. At least our group has some diversity of thought.

[–]Starmind0 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Your stance is trash and against the standards of being an MRA. That's not "diversity of thought", that's you attacking the movement you claim to support and using that as an excuse. Specially when you attack it because the issue doesn't interest you that much like this one which shows your intentions. You're treating this case as if men are predatory by nature and should be checked all the time. If people like you actually cared about safety, you would have feared lesbians too, even more too, knowing they're the ones showing the highest amount of aggressiveness in domestic abuse. As I have said before, men too face creepy interactions from women at the gym and even worse that those interactions aren't punished at all. Men have spoken up about this before and I have asked some men about it myself, and lots of evidence show how women in gyms have not only taken pics of men before but also straight up touch them sexually. Making this issue, naturally, an issue both genders face. Men as usual were taught to not speak up about this and to even like it hence the silence. So is your concern really to fend off creepy people? Or simply to defend sexist laws that treats men the absolute same exact way white people treated black people just to excuse segregation? And a small note: ALL issues are valid issues no matter what. Someone who actually cares NEVER says one issue is a "waste of time to care about" or "there are bigger issues to care about".

[–]ImplodedPotatoSalad 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Diversity of thought is a liability in any fight. Thats my stance. Now, destroying the enemy in any possible way all at once - thats effective.

[+]RandomEqualist -37 points-36 points-35 points 4 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women have gotten innocent men lynched to death or to hospital admission by falsely accussing them of sexual harrassment on public spaces.

[–]dingoperson2 5 points6 points7 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

fantastic, i honestly care about this, if women want to break the law and discriminate then they can get convicted, maybe just stop the lawbreaking?? this is a good solution by using the courts

[–]Shadowdragon409 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I honestly agree, although I think your wording is contributing to your downvotes.

Men that sexually harass women need to be held accountable and should be removed from public spaces like this. Separating the genders will only exasperate this issue

[–]RandomEqualist 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Womens only gyms exist because too many men treat the gym like a meat market where they think it's okay to go hit on a girl when all they want to do is work out.

This isnt a mens rights issue, it's a stop acting like shit issue. If men overall would just let women work out in peace there wouldnt be a need for womens only gym. This isnt an issue of discrimination against men, its men needing to act better.

[–]kinkyonebay 74 points75 points76 points 4 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Interesting take. I disagree. Virtually every space/institution/club for men to be men among men has been dismantled over the last 50 years in the name of equality, inclusivity and defeating MiSoGyNy. Barring men from gyms is discriminatory and would absolutely not be tolerated if this were the other way around. I don't really see much sense in arguing the point with you, though - the CT Supreme Court just said so.

As far as men treating gyms like a meat market? Maybe you need to frequent more gyms? Women treat gyms the same way...

[–]GulchDale 34 points35 points36 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If black men overall would just let white people work out in peace there wouldnt be a need for whites only gym. This isnt an issue of discrimination against black men, its black men needing to act better.

[–]Clemicus 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]reverbiscrap 4 points5 points6 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the right to bear arms

Amusing how every gun control measure to ever pass in to law in America got there by focusing on minorities, and was put in place by Republicans.

California? Republican legislature and governor. New York, same deal. I think DC may have been an exception. Hell, the Chinese were banned from owning firearms at one point, iirc.

[–]sidirhfbrh 35 points36 points37 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This isnt an issue of discrimination against men

Odd because it that’s exactly how it looks. White people used to come up with lots of ’reasons’ to do things like this to non whites and we realized that was wrong many years ago. Discrimination is never okay just because you feel like it’s just justified.

[–]Shadowdragon409 20 points21 points22 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While I do agree that that stereotype exists for a reason, I disagree with your claim that this isn't a men's rights issue.

Barring men from an establishment for any reason is the same as barring women from an establishment for any reason.

The only way women only spaces can be acceptable is if men only spaces can be acceptable. Since men only spaces have been removed from society, women only spaces shouldn't be allowed to exist either.

One of the other comments said that the only way to handle a situation like this would be to create two identical gyms right next to each other. One for women and one for men. It was upvoted quite a bit, so I would assume that a lot of men agree with that sentiment as well.

Even this judgement is to ensure that women are not affected by a men only space:

“A reading of (the law) to imply a gender privacy exception, although presumably to benefit women, could also negatively affect the rights of women in a different way,” Robinson wrote. “Such an exception could be invoked to exclude women based on the privacy interests of men and could justify discrimination against transgender individuals because some customers, ‘due to modesty, find it uncomfortable’ to be around such people.”
