I don't get the point. Commitment isn't trapping yourself with someone so you and they can't leave. commitment is shown through time when neither of you chose to leave even though you could. I mean, why would anyone want this? No matter how much I love someone not only do I always want to be able to leave, I would always prefer to be left than to have him stick with me because there's no way out even though he doesn't love me - that would be so brutal I couldn't live that way. In fact I would want it to be the easiest thing in the world to leave me in any relationship I'm in, because that's the only time when staying together actually matters and stands for something.

Love is the only thing that matters, being stuck with someone won't force it to exist if there is none, and if there is, then commitment is already there

This is why the religious/spiritual aspect of marriage is important along with the legal aspect. So you really wouldn't be inventing anything new aside from adding more red tape. It'd basically be a spiritualized marriage for atheists, lol.

What if there is domestic violence later on? While it doesn't seem likely, there are times things change that way; for example a war vet who was previously normal dealing with PTSD in toxic and even dangerous ways. And what about infidelity? Infidelity is a threat to the innocent spouse's health due to STD risk, yes even with condoms (not that it can necessarily be verified by the innocent spouse that the guilty spouse even used them... And who can trust a cheater to tell the truth anyway?)

SuperMarried couples are not eligible for divorce in the eyes of the state. The only way out is death.
SuperMarried couples get an additional 0.04% tax break.
The government gives out a limited number of SuperMarriage certificates each year so you have to petition for it and there are fees.
You cannot remarry if your spouse dies. That's how strong this commitment is

I'm a diehard romantic so that last bit sounds especially nice. It is a choice that can still be made even without this "Super Marriage", though.

Social aspects:
Men should spend at least a quarter year's salary on another ring.
Tasteful permanent tattoos of each other's names are suggested. Preferably somewhere visible.
SuperWeddings are expected to be more extravagant than the original wedding.
SuperProposals are expected to be more romantic than the original proposal.

Some of this sounds rather classist since only people who can afford more can pay the fees, throw the lavish parties, etc. And if you think bridezilla culture is bad now, just wait until your plan is carried out haha. As for tattoos, what about people with sensitive skin who would rather not risk infection?

Ultimately, my opinion on your proposal (pun unintended but nonetheless still amuses) is what I said earlier: This is why the religious/spiritual aspect of marriage is important along with the legal aspect. I'm sure that abusers wouldn't take advantage of this at all. The majority are never convicted, and of course they could just bide their time. We'd also wonder whether any couples who had it actually wanted to stay together or are just forced. I'm sure many spouses would wonder that too. That's if anyone picked it, and I'm unsure why they would.

That sounds like a fun idea. I would love to see how this concept changes the movie industry. Now, in cheesy soap operas, the highlights would be that someone super-proposes etc... We had this for most of history, it didn’t stop couples from informally breaking up. Lots of middle and lower class people didn’t make divorce official, but lived apart anyway.

Spending more on rings and ceremonies is the worst idea I have ever heard, and is a guarantee that more of these “super marriages “ don’t work out. The most common cause of marital stress is financial problems. It’s not just intuitively obvious but also statistically provable that expensive weddings are a horrible idea.

Super marriages should be required to be conducted at city hall and the money saved by the families used to pay down debt and provide the new couple with a financial cushion. No. Whether it is too easy to divorce or not now is a difficult question. But enforcement of lifelong marriage and discouragement of divorce is a complex dynamic that involves many aspects of a culture.

Just letting people lock themselves into a medieval marriage structure while the rest of the culture and environment stays the same does not seem like it would work out well. Marriage longevity and stability is a holistic problem.

It’s a fun idea but I don’t think it’s practical in any way. “Super married” people would still separate if they want to, inability to get divorced would just complicate financial division. Abuse also can be hidden for years and I can imagine abusers playing a long game to trap their victim without a way out. Also certain people would get married, then super married…and start cheating or just putting less efforts in, because they’d feel entitled to their partner.

Also the second wedding and ring seem to be playing into capitalism by encouraging people to spend and waste even more resources than they do now. Totally unnecessary imv.

I would support this. I would love to have a legally recognized option to have a relationship with one way in and no way out.

It would be useless unless society severely shames and ostracizes anyone that de facto leaves that kind of supermarriage even if the state don't recognized the end of such relationship.

The states of Louisiana, Arkansas and Arizona already have this as an option sans the bling options you listed, and call it covenant marriage. Louisiana was the first in 1997. It's been a miserable failure in the last two decades with less than 2% of marriage applicants opting for it.

Back in the old old days, if a couple wanted a divorce in some states, they'd have to plead their case to the state legislature and the state legislature would have to vote on it.

Not everyone is perfect. On the one hand, people not mature enough to marry shouldn't marry in the first place (and in today's world, many people are doing just that). But also, people can still break even after the 8-year SuperMarriage (as someone else suggested, cases like PTSD combat veterans) and it's a huge tragedy, but if the only way out is death, some people might find a way to, well, accelerate that. I read somewhere a while back that when divorce was liberalized from the state-legislature method, "freak accidents" went down by something like 20%.

I'd suggest the best option is somewhere in the middle. SuperMarriage might mean you need a really good reason to divorce, which you might have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt before the county supervisors or something. If you kept no-fault divorce in place for regular marriages, then make SuperMarriage effective from day 1, because otherwise a spouse might decide "I have to file for divorce before X date before I become ineligible for half his stuff."

And as someone else also said, what you're describing is basically a religious marriage for atheists.

This is a terrible idea.

People who would agree to be super married still have the capacity to be unfaithful or for the relationship to develop into a controlling or abusive one.

An unhappy unhealthy marriage where the love is gone is shown to not only be harmful long-term to the couple but also if they have any children.

If you both want consequences to a marriage breaking up make a prenup and live in a state where the rights you have when you breakup are amenable to you.
