If nothing else, Menarche is a very abrupt and observable marker of fertility that pubescent boys don’t experience. That’s why many cultures place strong importance on some kind of rite of passage or ritual marking adulthood for boys. It gives them an equivalent slap in the face- you’re a man now.

Age gap relationships were historically common, as far as I know, but I don’t think a woman’s (or girl’s) maturity even entered into the equation in those situations if we’re being honest.

So it’s more like… supposed maturity could rationalize an age gap relationship. In reality, people do what they want and find a reason that sounds good later.

it is a biological fact that women develop their prefrontal cortex faster. So throughout childhood and adolescence, women are about 1 year more mature (in terms of brain development) than men.

but from going to "women develop slightly faster" to "women are as mature as men 10 years older" is just delusion.

Personally, I think the fact women mature faster physically hinders their emotional and psychological maturity. The women you see dating the older men are often very immature, along with the men who choose to date younger women.

Being a consenting adult is what justifies a dating age gap. Not some broad notion of “maturity”. If a 20 year old chooses to date a 60 year old, fine. If a 13 year old “chooses” to date a 20 year old, that 20 year old is doing wrong, no matter how mature they may claim the 13 year old is.

There is also some cultural nuance in this statement. If the woman is a POC, black, Latino and Asian they usually have familial expectations put on them that require a certain amount of maturity that is not required for the males in the family. Often the oldest girl becomes the “second” mom in the household where she picks up the slack for general household maintenance and family caregiving. This is not every home of course but this does happen often enough.

So the levels of forced maturity may vary based on the culture that you are dealing with.

Women don't emotionally mature faster than men. Men tolerate immature behavior in women but not vice-versa. Women also tend to become bitter and jaded with maturity, which is a huge turnoff for men, whereas it's usually the opposite with men.

I don't think it does because despite this so many excuses are given for women making bad choices.

Take advantage of an under age kid? Not her fault it's that her husband wasn't satisfying her she was abused in the past.

Commit a horrible act of violence? It's not that she chose to be violent It's that she was being abused.

Does she have unreasonable expectations? No men just fail to meet her standards.

Why does she keep getting into bad relationships? It's not that she makes bad choices she just keeps getting deceived by bad men over and over and over.

It just seems odd that there's this idea that women mature faster than men but nothing is ever their responsibility/fault.

I think women are forced to mature faster, and the solution to this isn't to just accept it and keep babying men by saying they should match up with younger people who'll expect even less maturity for them. We need to encourage men to grow up a bit quicker rather than support low levels of development.

Based on my own personal experience, IMO it's a myth that women "mature faster". Boys start... showing libido... at a much earlier age, and as for maturity in young adults... it's about comparable, though even then, young men are often times more driven, more responsible, thinking ahead in life, etc.

Also, I do not think there's a need to justify "age gaps" in dating, as long as you are both adults. (There is NO justification otherwise)

Granted, I would find it weird if you were old enough to be her dad, but you are both adults. You make your decisions, who cares what society thinks?

Men have to prove to the world, and to women, that they are desirable. Most men throughout history failed miserably at this, and women were up to 17x more sexually successful. Women often chose the most attractive men with more power, usually older.

Just because the average woman is more socially adept sooner doesnt mean they 'mature' faster. In fact i strongly believe that many women never fully mature until they are much older and their sexual influence has receded.

To me, and i would wager to most people maturity comes with self sufficiency and accountability. Yet this is in surprisingly short supply among women. Theyre very quick to ask for help with virtually anything whilst at the same time being incapable of accepting their own failings and mistakes with dignity.

How this plays into the whole scenario of dating older men, thats a bigger question. If i had to guess it is not because of maturity. But status and fiscal desirability.

Women reach their peak maturity much faster than men meet their peak maturity. But a man's sub-peak maturity is still often more mature than a woman's peak maturity.

I don't think age gaps are something that need to be justified but your reasoning is probably the biggest positive argument for them.

I think it often explains the 2-5 year age gap which is so common. I don't think it explains 30 year old men going for barely legals or vice versa.

I think women mature faster than men at a young age.

But I don't really care because people don't really mature that much, in my experience.

Most of the people, both boys and girls, I know from high school are essentially exactly the same as they were back then. The jocks are still jocks, the mean girls, and still mean girls. The nerds with no friends are still nerds with no friends. The ones that were happy then are happy now, and the ones that weren't, aren't. The mature ones now were always mature, regardless of gender.

I'm about to hit 30, and we're basically all the same as we were. Just some of the girls got fat and wrinkled, and some of the boys got fat and bald.

Maturity, in my experience, seems more to do either WHO you are, rather than HOW LONG you've been.

Women body develops faster than men by average? Yes. But if you're talking about emotional and mental maturity, it depends on so many factors.

When I was a teen, the girls back in middle and high school dated college guys because they present the image of maturity like a car, part-time job, or if they're lucky live with roommates. What was common was all those girls were told that they were mature and wise for their age by those men only to be manipulated and abused due to their lack of maturity. The dating age gap from younger women is mostly due to them viewing older men with perceived maturity.

Forced to grow up more quicker isn't unique to girls, it depends how early and quickly puberty starts. If you go through puberty very early, people will mistake you as an adult. If you look older people will treat you as such, and you have to act accordingly. It happened to me, I started growing a mustache at 9 and started growing a beard at 11. By the time I was 12 people thought I was a college freshmen, and what made matters worse is I'm dark skinned so you can imagine how sudden the shift from "a cute dorky kid" to "that weird awkward dude who's hangs out with kids."

Like said about the teen girls dating college freshmen, 20-something women date older men for the benefits, not maturity. There were a couple of women back in college that "dated" older men because they were sending them money and given them rides to places lol.

Well as far as women maturing faster goes, usually when a woman answers into a relationship with an older man people are more concerned for her.

But when a man in his early twenties, enters into a relationship with an older woman people do not care as much. Does this mean they feel that men can handle themselves better and therefore mature faster usually?

Girls mature faster than boys but their maturity typically stops in their late teens to mid 20s which is why it's not uncommon for 50 year old women to gossip as much as teenage girls. The reason is because they both have the same level of maturity which is slightly above that of a teenage boy.

As for age gap relationships, stop trying to intellectualize or justify it. If you're an older man who wants to date younger women and there are younger women willing to date you then that's all the justification you need. Do you honestly expect to present some sort of thesis that will suddenly cause the women of PPD and their battalion of white knights to say "hmmm, I never thought of it that way...under these set of circumstances it's perfectly acceptable for a 40 year old man to have a 24 year old girlfriend". Ain't gonna happen, buddy.

Mature no, but I would say toughen and adapt. Since men live life on nightmare mode they are forced to become tougher and to be more prepared to difficult situations. They are not receiving the same support as women, they cannot make friends as easy as women, they cannot get intimacy as easy as women, they do not graduate college as easy as women. Women are getting such a high advantage compared to men and barely anybody notices it or refuse to notice it.
