"Progressive" women falling short?

I've noticed this disparity in most of the progressive women I've dated. On paper, they want to believe in egalitarianism and depart from traditional gender roles. But in reality, they become undeniably excitable and tingly when you exhibit all the traditionally masculine behaviours. This hypocrisy used to annoy me so much, but it doesn't anymore.

I think most people, men and women, want to feel accepted by whatever culture they find themselves in, so they'll parrot the culture's acceptable opinions and beliefs to feel like they're part of it, and not be ostracized. Regardless of whether they actually believe in it or not. Rocking the boat is socially risky.

I also think there are many progressive people who want to believe in the things they claim to believe in, but fail to actually live up to those values in their actions, due to a combination of traditional cultural conditioning, and the biological differences between the sexes.

That's why it feels so fake and performative when you see it. If someone claims to have progressive views, watch and see if their actions align with those views, that's how you see the real ones.

It's easy to be mad at the performers, but ultimately they're just trying to find their place in society and be accepted, maybe even contribute to what they believe would make it better. The way they're going about it may seem idiotic, but this is true of any ideology.

Marriage is not a religious thing. It is a binding contract that is useful for two people who intend to invest into common future and raise kids. Not for everyone, but it is not garbage.

Your problem is bundling loads of beliefs together and saying if you don't support one of them yet participate in something entirely different that's hypocritical. Hypocrites engage in the same behaviour they criticise. It's hypocritical to say diamonds are bad and then ask for a diamond, or say marriage is bad and then get married. It is not hypocritical to vote for a left-wing party and also get married. They're not even against marriage, nor do you need to subscribe to all their beliefs in order to support them.

You can for example believe that a marriage is the highest form of commitment and a show of the joining of two people... But also believe that said commitment and partnership doesn't have to confirm to gender roles and traditional dynamics.

You've fallen into the trap that you think that you can never update tradition to be more your style. You can modernise traditional dresses, because that's how traditional clothes evolved.

Lots of the "authentic traditional" stuff we have were once "modern and untraditional" a few centuries ago.

The done thing in my circle is for a couple to discuss marriage and agree to it. Lots of women I know went ring shopping or helped design their own engagement rings. And they get paid from joint accounts, because by the time we're ready for marriage we're also already in committed financial partnerships.

At that stage it's not really confirming men's gender roles at all. Or women's.

What's hypocritical is if your beliefs conflict with each other. So you can't claim to not want to be a traditional housewife of you expect a traditional provider.

But even then you could, for example, believe that it's best for there to be at least one parent at home, and that in your case it's a woman. But it also believe that decisions should be made together. Because you're an equal partnership, just with a traditional labour split. The belief that decisions are equal does not conflict with a traditional role split.

But that might be too much nuance for this sub

Every progressive wants affordable housing built, until you suggest building it next to them. I get your point but progressiveness doesn't mean literally throw out 100% of everything we've ever done and start completely fresh.

That's more of a revolutionary, anachro-leftist, anti-hegemonic type of thought. "Progressives" (particularly in the US) are moderate to right-leaning (big picture) so leftist ideology wouldn't tend to apply to most progressive women.

Progressives still retain some parts of society so what makes marriage/ rings hypocritical vs. their desire to keep a democratic republic, keep social security, keep post offices, or any other thing these women want to keep from our existing social structure?

Tbh I definitely agree with the premise of this discussion but I have to throw this at progressive PEOPLE.

I mean just moving outside of local dating dynamics, when looking at the responses towards either the Russia Ukraine conflict or the current troubles in Israel, its impressed me how many of these virtue signalling sacks of garbage seem to relish exasperating conflict whilst forgoing ceasefires/negotiations/peace talks.

In a less macro context, yeah, I feel its the biggest challenge for men today when navigating relationships with women. So many are willing to use progressivism simply as a means of self service or as a weapon. Hell, I notice the same minority groups too (something I NEVER thought I would find myself saying just 3 years ago as a minority). I think wider society is crying out for a form of "mens lib" which acknowledges the challenges young men face whilst pouring water on the idea that you have to a misogynistic scumbag like Tate to enjoy any success. But that's the problem, success. We ALL know a thousand Tate types in the real world who enjoy plenty of success. Hell, look at how much progressive champion Onlyfans, then discover the uncomfortable reality of how much sex trafficking and lover boy pimping is woven into the very fabric of sex work. Its all a sham.

It's a stupid thing to get bent out of shape about, but I actually agree with you OP. It annoys me when women who fancy themselves progressives still insist on a big white wedding with all the pomp and ceremony that is completely devoid of any meaning when done by progressive people.

When I got married, I didn't wear a white dress, my father didn't give me away, I did not get an engagement ring and I didn't take my husbands last name. These things are all against my principles and I'm not interested in a 24 hour LARP which is what most modern weddings are.

But people want what they want. If it annoys you, as it does me, make sure to be very clear with your partner about your expectations before you marry them. And pull the plug if they insist on you buying them a diamond ring.

But I'd bet you 20 quid that men do that same stuff too, but we don't see it as much because we're not women, in the same way they don't see it because they're not men.

Shit, I know I do. I love being the 6'3, strong guy who can lift her up and fix stuff, when it suits me, but I also want to be cuddled and appriciate it a lot when my partners have paid for things and bought me stuff I couldn't afford.

If you find that someone is a hypocrite in such a way that it hurts you or makes you feel unappriciated, odds are they're just a bad person.

What I've noticed is that when you talk to a lot of women (and people), they can come across as very progressive because that is the mainstream trendy vibe to convey. But if you ever take the time to get down to what they actually believe and follow individually it's a lot more nuanced - many are not completely on board with feminist or progressive ideology just b/c the catchphrases they randomly spew or post are in line with the political climate. I also think spending too much time online lends one to believe everyone else is as obsessed with social justice or identity politics as they are.

Supporting progressive politics and legislation doesn’t have anything to do with wanting to get married. Atheists get married too. At this point, it mostly represents an areligious relationship commitment.

Wanting a beautiful or large wedding ring, again, doesn’t negate someone’s politics. There are lab grown diamonds and various gemstones. Jewelry is pretty, it’s not that deep.

1) Progressive is a label. If you haven't noticed, people using the same label in any circumstance will often vary in the belief and the intensity of those beliefs.

2) As to whether it's hypocritical, that would depend on what progressive means to them.

3) This is anecdotal and the fact that you keep finding "progressive" women like this likely says more about the type of woman you're attracted to than progressive women as whole.

The thing about ideology is that it is often near impossible to live up to it 100% because doing so would not only require immense sacrifice, but in reality, it might not even be possible. One example is being anti-capitalist but still shopping at walmart- a lot of people HAVE to do it, bc thats the only place they can get groceries. It doesn't make them hypocrites because the only other option is going off-grid, which is not a real option to most people because even getting a hunk of land to do it is out of reach. You have much more of a point on the diamonds. Given that nearly everything you buy is in some way unethically sourced I get why a lot of people simply decide not to care -- although tbh I do judge them a bit. My engagement ring will not be a diamond and most of the people I know who have gotten engaged did not get diamonds unless it was a family ring. So I'm not sure if your girlfriends are really all that representative of progressive women in general on that.

Idk why you're letting conservatives off the hook for diamonds -- is it a "traditional value" to be totally okay with child slavery?

ETA: I googled and found a stat saying that 90% of people currently shopping for engagement rings want natural diamonds, which is actually way higher than I ever would have guessed based on what I've seen in my (pretty lefty) social circles. So clearly some of us care, but diamonds are still just super popular.

My ring was assembled with my grandmother and auntie's engagement diamonds - no new diamonds purchased: and we went to the courthouse and were married by a Justice of the Peace. I was 28 and he was 34 though. Not sure your dating pool...nor am I sure about when my eyes were opened about diamonds and the wedding industry.

It is worth noting- there is a lot of brainwashing women need to overcome with regard to their weddings I feel like. I bet this is even more the case with religious women/women from religious backgrounds (and the family expectations that may bring with it).

Not everyone sees being progressive in precisely the same way. Are you vegan? There are those who say you're not progressive if you eat meat. Are you off grid? Where are your retirement savings invested? You wearing any polyester? Or fur? Or leather?

I agree that socially conscious people shouldn't support the diamond industry, so yes I agree there's some hypocrisy there, but also just a lot of ignorance.

I don't think this is specifically a problem with progressive women though. Because nobody (of any gender) is ideologically perfect. This is the case for any political leaning too. If you find somebody who isn't a hypocrite about something, I'd be shocked.

What do I mean? Well, in my experience and observation, people who base or determine every.single.thing.and.decision. based on whether or not it fits into this ideological belief, cannot make decisions either for themselves or in general, refuse to compromise or sacrifice, sometimes you must do that, and if you cannot accept it, don't make it my problem.

It's the ideology part. You, as in anyone not just the OP, cannot seem to make decisions unless it fits into this ideological box or checklist. Most people don't work like that. Or you hold the other person to this standard to where anything that seemingly violates it, is like a zero tolerance red flag.

You do or believe whatever you want, but when and if you allow politics or rigid ideological standards to define your or every detail and aspect of your personal relationships, platonic or romantic, that's on you. You deal with it and the consequences. And don't say anybody made you.

Nothing is ever good enough. There is no appreciation, at all. Holy fucking shit, you guys are talking about marriage and neither of you can accept this? Wow. I'll let you figure it out.

Everything is based on this check list, sometimes applicable, but I can't stand when people CONSTANTLY do it. It reeks of this bad mix of soccer mom bullshit and everything is done like it's in an office environment. It's not about making the decision together.

My suggestion? Just stop doing it. Or approaching it from that angle.

Let's be real the vast majority of weddings are just really expensive parties. Where some gets offended the photographer you spent 5k on didn't include them in a group shot. Don't get me wrong I love an open bar but that's really the only awesome thing going down at a wedding.

How many women are wearing bring white wedding dresses and reading their Bible? They're getting a party bus and going to vineyards for their bachelorette and day drinking while kayaking. Or doing a spa day and shit.

Don't know about the diamond thing. All my married friends don't have diamonds. Emeralds, tanzanite, alexandrite, mossionite, and some sapphires in there. My cousin has a diamond but she's very traditional.

But realistically modern weddings are just a little bit of hedonism mixed with family drama and color swatches. The Bible readings are for Nana let's be real.

Most people are not ideological purists, and have beliefs that consistently one or the other. Rigid ideological purity is not a particularly positive quality in a partner— being mulish and inflexible simply makes you unable to adapt to challenges you’ll face as a team.

Like for me. I wanted a wedding. Not a big one, not for me, but for our families. It’s not a mundane event, and it’s not “traditional religious garbage” to want to celebrate something happy. Forming a new family is a happy occasion and worth celebrating. But, likewise, we didn’t do everything traditional: we skipped the “I will obey my husband” vows because that isn’t my husband’s or my values, we had sex before the marriage (even though I had never done casual sex or had other sexual partners).

And likewise, my husband got some “progressive or traditional when it benefits me” stuff too. He convinced me to change my last name, yet I’m also the primary breadwinner. He gets a whole lot more influence over and time with the kids than a traditional-minded man, for better and for worse.

Should I be all piss and vinegar because we’re not living our lives according to some rigid stick-up-their-ass ideological purists’ ideas of avoiding hypocrisy? Sounds dumb to me.

I honestly don’t even see how it’s “hypocritical” to be traditional or progressive on different issues. “Traditional” values are not set in stone or logically consistent either— they’re not even consistent across cultures or time. Why is it “consistent” for someone to do two things that are linked together only because traditionalists say they should both be done?

Like, if you expect sex with a woman before you will propose marriage, is it “hypocritical” if you also like that she has long hair and wears skirts? Or do you have to date only women with short blue hair because you didn’t want to wait 6 months for sex?

Geez bro you gotta understand that women don’t think about this shit.

Most women are not progressive because they’ve educated themselves on politics, have thought deeply about political theory, mulled it over and came to a conclusion which best suits their life goals, personality, and philosophy of life.

Most women are progressive because it’s the dominant worldview in their social circles and due to being much more agreeable, they adopt this worldview to reduce conflict.

These women are hypocrites but they are unconscious hypocrites. If they were conscious of the hypocrisy they wouldn’t do it. The hypocrisy itself is a telltale sign they aren’t actually thinking.

I’m from NYC, I meet tons of progressive women. In fact I would say 99% of women I meet are progressive but try and have a talk about politics with these women and you will quickly realize they aren’t progressive for any real reason. It’s just cool and reduces social friction to be progressive.

It is in fact a “progressive because it benefits me” kind of deal.

Another example is how these same women who espouse gender bending ideology still want to fuck alpha males, ie: tall, physically fit, dominant, socially savvy, wealthy and handsome men.

They say one thing and do another, not because they’re liars per say but because they are not self aware enough to see it or if they are self aware, they lack the strength necessary to acknowledge what these observations would mean for their reality. Easier to live in a comfortable illusion.
